1. Failure to communicate check-in information. Prior to our arrival, we were told we would be informed of the check-in time. No such communication was received.

2. Non-functioning lift. Upon arrival, the lift was out of order. This was not communicated to us in advance.

3. Non-functioning air conditioning. The air conditioning in our room was not operational, resulting in an uncomfortably warm environment throughout our stay.

4. Unpleasant room condition. The room had a noticeable and persistent unpleasant odour, which added to the general discomfort.

5. Excessive and undisclosed noise until 2:00 a.m. This was the most serious issue. Music continued at a volume that caused the entire room to vibrate until 2:00 in the morning, making it impossible for either myself or my young son to sleep. At no point during the booking process, nor at check-in, were we informed that the hotel would be subject to this level of noise. We would have accepted a degree of street noise as perfectly normal for a city hotel — but what we experienced was something else entirely. The noise level was comparable to being inside a nightclub. Had we been made aware of this in advance, we would not have proceeded with this booking. The failure to disclose this constitutes, in my view, a serious and material omission.

A warm welcome with a complimentary Prosecco on arrival set a great first impression, and every member of staff I interacted with was polite, friendly, and genuinely helpful. The location is excellent, especially being so close to the station.

I did experience a few issues during the stay. Breakfast was scheduled for 8:00am, but after waiting from 07:45 to 08:30 I eventually had to get in the shower. The breakfast itself was continental, which hadn’t been disclosed before booking, and it was left outside the room on the floor, uncovered, with juice and milk exposed.

The bathroom also had a practical issue: the shower screen had roughly a 1cm gap between the bath and the glass, which made showering awkward as I was trying to avoid flooding the floor. One of the hand towels had a long hair on it, though this didn’t bother me as there was a spare and these things can happen.

Overall, it’s a nice hotel with genuinely friendly staff and a great location. They just need to address a few operational details. I would stay again, provided these issues are resolved.

Style over substance. Poor, indifferent service on front desk. We stayed for 1 night at the end of November and our room was cold as the heating in the room wasn’t working. We were eventually moved to another room where the heating also wasn’t working but it was marginally less cold. No managers around at the weekend to make decisions. We had to follow up with the hotel when we got home to request a refund but were eventually given a paltry 20% refund. There was no ironing board to go with the iron. Breakfast is not a buffet but served to your room which was not made clear when we booked.

The location and building were lovely. The room was very spacious and nicely furnished!
It can be a bit noisy on an evening from nearby bars but it wasn’t anything of an issue for me.

Unfortunately on my stay the heating was not working and some others within the hotel had mentioned. So was a little bit cold in the room.
Overall a nice stay! With nice staff!

A very weird experience. The only (300 GBP plus per night) hotel that doesn't clean the room during the stay. Broken AC. No hot water. Run by children with very little clue.

Super noisy at weekends (but of course you are in the village so that's what you would expect) but trust me you will be at the party until 3am even if you are in bed.

Room itself (velvet suite) was ok but the bathroom was so tiny it was basically unusable for big 6ft2 guys

Our stay at the Velvet was okay. We were upgraded to a balcony room on check-in which was great but on entering the room we found a discarded sex toy on the floor which was not ideal. We handed that to reception and were happy the rest of the room was clean.
The main room itself was warm, and comfortable. The bathroom looked nice and had a statement bath but is in reality impractical. The bath wouldn't hold water and the shower leaked all over the floor so we used our towels each time to mop that up. There is no heated towel rail either so we had wet towels throughout our stay.
The hotel is in a good central spot but I'm not sure we'll stay on our next visit

The air conditioning was stuck on cold so we had to turn it off. Stains on towel and bath robe. Mould on sealant in the shower.
Our room wasn't cleaned very well.
Continental breakfast was poor and pastries were stale.

Very nice shower. Comfortable bed. Fantastic location in the heart of the city and near the railway station. Also a nice adjoining bar.

But we would not stay here again.

Reception gentleman was rude, Lifts didnt work, so you had to walk up 3x stairs to go and leave rooms (*quite annoying with Baggage). WI-FI was very poor, and ended up having to pay for an EE service to do anything. Screen Sharing didnt work! Overall, really bad experience......

From the moment we arrived the staff were just exceptional. They were warm, welcoming and friendly. We came from London and we were there to party and they had the best energy and great vibes! We were greeted with prosecco and they made sure we were settled quickly. Anything we asked was never too much. Rabab was the most lovely woman and Josh, he was there throughout our whole stay - absolutely incredible customer service - professional and friendly. Its service like this that makes the trip that little bit more special. Thank you so very very much for your impeccable hospitality. We will be back! And because of Velvet’s staff, we wouldn’t stay anywhere else! Oh! And the hotel is beautiful! The rooms were cosy and clean! There was a minibar full with everything we needed. The bed was SO comfortable! Could not fault a single thing!

Rooms were small but OK.
Breakfast was Continental with no choice and served in the room.
Parking was 5 min walk away and £25 per day. With the discount the hotel was offering it came to £46 with a checkin at 11:00am and checkout at 4:00pm the next day.
Overall good experience but costly.

Payment was take before arrival which I’ve never had through hotels.com before so was a little annoyed as I wanted to use a different card. The woman at reception was rather rude and didn’t want to engage in conversation so we had little info about the hotel. We were give complimentary glasses of Kylie Prosecco which was a nice touch. Upon getting to the flor where our room was o was instantly met with stairs to the room which I had previously contact the property to request accessibility as I have a disability that isn’t obvious to most people. Once we did get into the room it was most definitely not a superior king room as I had booked and was a standard double bed. Very small and the shower still had a step into it. I called reception to explain the issues and again the woman didn’t want to engage with me but a lovely man was sent up to help us move to a more suitable room. The next room was more like what I had actually booked. It was a lovely room, clean and comfortable. A few light bulbs needed changing. Bed was very comfortable. After check out and on the train home I was charged more and also received two emails addressed to someone called Alex. Upon emailing the property they told me I had been charged incorrectly for the room and that was prob the name of an Expedia booking agent. I got no apology and asked them why nobody mentioned any of that to me upon checking out? I was met with I should’ve asked upon check out.., how could I do that afterwards?

Upon arrival from the airport I was permitted to check in early, which was delightful (until I got to the room). Overall, the condition of the room left much to be desired. For example, the room was dusty, particularly on the shelves. The contents of the mini-bar were less than optimally fresh, as well. Small towels and washcloths were absent from the bathroom and, indeed, absent from the hotel itself. But above all, the lift was broken throughout the duration of my stay. That was particularly inconvenient when, it turned out, my room was on the highest floor. The linens were pressed initially and the bed was relatively comfortable. The carpets need to be replaced. My initial request for a late checkout seems to have been misplaced which was rather inconvenient on the day I checked out. Requests for additional (bath) towels were not promptly acted upon and multiple followups were necessary on two specific occasions. Finally, the noise from the night club adjacent continued late into the evening at a volume that interfered with my sleep. I won't stay here again.

Worst hotel stay ever

Booked at short notice for a business trip, reviews were great, pictures looked nice, but this has to be the worst hotel stay I’ve experienced.

I checked in late, 11pm, booked breakfast for 7.45. Female lone traveller. Went straight to my room, it was quirky but fine. It was on the 1st floor and overlooked the street. It was a little noisy at first but come midnight it became ridiculous. The music from the nearby club or bar became so loud and whatever bar or club kicked out, everyone was in street, shouting - I could hear every word. Phoned reception, no answer, didn’t want to go to reception that late on my own with loads of men partying and shouting outside. 3am it finally stopped.

7.45am arrived, no breakfast. 8am I phoned reception, restaurant and room service - no answer. 8.15am went down to check out, waited around for someone to appear. Eventually the receptionist appeared, I explained I had been kept awake until 3am and breakfast did not arrive. Whilst she apologised, she did not refund breakfast and told me they have a problem with the bar next door which is meant to shut at 11pm. They have complained to the council about it, but despite knowing they had an issue, they put me in the room directly above it, not at the back.

So unless you are there to party, save your money and go to a hotel that cares about guests.

It's central in the Manchester's gay village which is great. Our room was very noisy - thin walls from next door (!) and loud party street outside. The shower was a bit mouldy at the edges but the bed was comfy and with earplugs we slept. Breakfast was only continental - a small bowl of yoghurt and muesli and pastries. No coffee apparently other than the pods in the room with long life milk. Not really the 'boutique' we were looking for - I was with my daughter on a uni visit and the room felt more like a gothic black den with a large 'suggestive' mural on one wall and a huge mirror on the other side. I didn't feel this 'vibe' was very clear from the website!

Huge bath, lovely glass of bubbles on arrival, staff on check in were lovely, the man on the desk at 4am didn’t understand when I asked if he had lemonade I could buy.

Lifts were out of order, one was sign posted the other we just found out it was out of order when myself and another traveller were stood waiting and no lift came down. Signs to my room needed to be more clear too.

The blonde woman checking people in in reception yesterday afternoon (Weds 24th) was unbelievably rude, unhelpful and after saying it was a £100 card pre-auth (despite your own website and T's and C's saying £50 pre-auth) told me if we didnt like it we could leave just handed us our key card. Didnt tell us which room we were in, didnt hand us a glass of prosecco (when we came back to reception after going the wrong way, we saw her giving them to another couple checking in).

The room was clean, but there was a strong aroma of poo, i did have to open the windows to air out the room. Great location, but, i'm not sure i'd visit again.

This hotel boasts fantastic, friendly service. A delightful check-in experience which included a glass of prosecco.

The room was large and comfortable.

I'd suggest two improvements - the room had large glass windows at a 45 degree angle. This means that the blinds only blocked out about 70% of the sun. The bed is directly under the windows meaning that as soon as the sun came up, the sun was shining directly on me, with no way of blocking it. Fortunately, I carry and eye mask!

Secondly, the working desk didn't have a chair, which seems an odd omission.

Its always been nice staying here the last handful of times.

Unfortunately this time there was some suspicious stains on one of the covers, and despite paying for late checkout (1pm) we got woken up early both days we stayed, the first time by someone trying to come into the room.

We understand mistakes happen though. And normally theres no problems at all. So we're still pleased with the venue.

The hotel is great. That said, the location is a double edged sword. It is in the heart of the gay district, which is amazing as it’s alive and buzzing with people. With that comes late night clubbing and the music coming through the building is incredibly disruptive. We didn’t get to sleep until 4 AM due to the noise from the nearby nightclubs.Book with caution!

Its really really dated and the condition is sub par. The edges of the room look like they need a good hoover. Everywhere needs a lick of paint and a good spruce. Room smelt damp too. No amount of a shiny reception and cheap glass of prosecco is going to help. Make the rooms the same standard as the reception area. Disappointing!

Great location and loved the decor and vibe. The fragrance in reception is divine. Room and bathroom were very well equipped. Bed was massive and comfortable except where the mattress topper didnt reach the edges. It’s in a vibrant part of the city, so be prepared for the sound of folks enjoying themselves. If you want a quiet part of Manchester this isn’t it. The hotel was luxurious from start the finish - glass of Prosecco on arrival. Bathroom with a huge bath & shower - huge comfy super king sized bed - huge TV too. The staff were personable & couldn’t do enough for you; one of those rare places where they genuinely looked as though they were enjoying their job. There was a lovely coffee machine, a well stocked fridge & snacks. Honestly, can’t fault this place. Ah - maybe not enough hangers; but I could have easily asked!

Moved to another room that was in such bad condition, window handle was broken and detached, window blinds which are mechanical didn’t work, kettle didn’t operate, breakfast didn’t arrive to the room as arranged (as assume because we was moved). Walls were chipped and marked.

After speaking to the hotel directly and through hotels.com they accused me of fabricating the issues after I had left.
Very dissapointed by this hotel, customer service with dealing with this issue has been horrendous from the hotel side - Hotels.com have been amazing though with the support.

Wouldn’t recommend this hotel to anyone for the price you pay; you expect more and a better response to issues when they arise, to be accused of lying is disrespectful.
Not inclusive at all for a hotel on the Canal Street.

Absolutely fantastic room and staff, a warm welcome and great location. Great that breakfast is delivered to your room as a standard, but not one to get excited about, it was a disappointing continental as far as continentals go and definitely not worth the money I'm afraid. Wouldn't stop me from staying again though, everything else was brilliant

Not worth the money

The room was not worth the £138 per night. Barely enough room to swing a cat and it did not include breakfast. Was woken at 04:00 and 04:30 by a bin lorry emptying the glass bin.

Great stay, such a comfortable bed.

My husband and I booked a 1 night stay as we were watching a comedian at O2 Apollo. It was a very direct, simple 20min walk to the venue. Being right on the canal was a beautiful setting. We stayed on a Thursday eve and it was busy, but the noise was not heard in our room, which was fab! Bed was so comfortable. A very compact room, but had everything we needed (we stayed in a cozy kingsize). The welcome drink of prosecco was a great touch too. Loved the minibar option too (we did not purchase, but appreciated the option nonetheless).

Lovely hotel with a very comfortable bed and pillows, only issue was with the electric windows in room, only two of them worked so was very warm a stuffy. There is heating/air conditioning but doesn’t let you go below 17 degrees so wasn’t working too well with it being a hot day.
Was pleasantly surprised at how quiet it was with it being on such a busy street on a Saturday night. Would definitely stay again with it being in such a great location and easy cheep parking in the area as well.

Lovely hotel, absolutely brilliant location. We received a lovely welcome and told about the room. The room itself was fabulous, well decorated and a pleasant place to spend time. The TV was huge, and the bed was extremely comfortable.
well stocked mini bar, an Illy Nespresso style machine and great views made the stay even better.

We would definitely stay again and highly recommend Velvet to anyone looking for a great hotel within walking distance of the bets bits of the city.

6/10 experience, good but not great by any means

Experience was sub-standard. Great room, windows on roof dirty, very dusty room. For the best room in the hotel, the water did not work in the bath, after telling reception, we were moved to a room where the lights didn’t work upstairs. For a premium room of premium price, experience was poor. Very comfortable bed & a pleasant night of sleep. Lovely bathroom, very very spacious. Wouldn’t book the deluxe balcony suite again, but maybe the signature suite to try.
