‘Black Ivy' is situated on the south side of Edinburgh in Bruntsfield which has a relaxed village feel and a unique mix of original boutique shops, artisan bakers and chocolatiers as well as great cafes, bars and restaurants and all within walking distance of the city centre. Enter the hotel bar and you would be forgiven for thinking you had stepped into another world with Black Ivy's design ethos rich in thought and attention to detail, resulting in a bar appearance which is a treat for the eyes and simply makes you think 'wow”.
Housed in 3 adjoining historic and beautiful town houses the hotel is contemporary and modern, inside and out. The welcome is warm and uniquely Scottish where you immediately feel part of the family and realise you have just discovered your new home from home.

Set in a beautiful part of Edinburgh, the hotel is decorated stylishly with an eclectic mix of art and fixtures. Black Ivy is a lovely hotel in the center of Edinburgh right next to the Meadows. Its interior and exterior design is wonderful and artsy, with photography in the hallways and rooms. It's really a gem. Our room had a gorgeous park view out to the Meadows and onto the lovely skyline of Edinburgh. The room was clean and modern and had all the amenities (shampoo, shower gel, hair dryer, etc) and it is ecofriendly. The staff is excellent and super helpful. We had a great stay. The Xmas decoration was quite special.

The only thing I would say is that the hot water for the shower was not very hot (to be fair I like it basically the temp of the surface of the sun) but it was above warm at best. The staff were cheerful and friendly. Room 211, top floor, was ok but *stifflingly hot* and sleeping was near impossible. To be fair it was during a very hot period in August which I realise may be unusual for Scotland but there was no air conditioning, the window only opened a few centimetres and the fan was all but useless. Altogether it was an expensive and uncomfortable night in a very small room.

Misleading Room Information
Double Room information was misleading. The room was so small, there is no place to put my two small suitcases. I have to move some of the room furniture to outside. In order to reach so called Wardrobe, you have to walk through on the bed. Despite my complaint to staff, nothing happened. Room is not 13 sq m at all. You will have only 1sq m to move around, Do not book room 107. Your holiday will be ruin.

Good property outside of madness but 15 minutes walk from Castle/Royal Mile. Not really a hotel a much as a good large restaurant bar with comfortable rooms. Kind of what we were looking for after 10 days of larger hotels with amenities we never used! Only problem we had was lack of AC. It wasn’ even that hotel but got a bit stuffy.

I was up in Edinburgh for an exam. My room was quiet, minimal noise, dark at night. The bed (pillows and mattress) were perfect for me. I slept really well for the first time in months the night after my exam. It's stylish and clean. Had a wonderful stay, thank you. Also staff kibdly looked after my heavy suitcase and bag (full of books) after check out so I can get out and about without pulling heavy bags around.

Sadly the stay did not live up to expectation. Upon arrival I didn’t get the room I had pre- paid for and my room had been down graded and the reason given was this was because I’d booked as a solo occupancy. The room wasn’t fit for purpose and left me with a sleepless night. The hotel manager accepted this was a failing on the hotels part and as the hotel was full I was given very little alternatives. Breakfast this morning was equally poor by being served a cremated sausage sandwich. Sadly this showed there is clearly a lack of quality process before food leaves the kitchen or simply a lack of pride by the chef. On a positive note the front of house team were polite and very friendly. I had planned my stay to celebrate my 60th birthday and left me extremely disappointed

Hotel was great, rooms spacious and well decorated. Friendly staff and great food. The only issue was the creaky water pipes, which made a lot of noise at night. It did not ruin the stay but the hotel needs to look into this.

I stayed here because my daughter's apartment was within walking distance. It was the perfect choice and a great location with shops all around. The restaurant has good food, and the staff is very friendly. Do not book the park view rooms on a Friday or Saturday night because the bar and outside terrace noise is loud until 11 p.m. The rooms in the back are much quieter.

Really enjoyed our stay at Black Ivy. Beautiful inside and out and in great location. Probably the best breakfast I’ve ever had - all brought to you, even the drinks. Ordered porridge and it came freshly made with raspberries, blueberries and seeds. Perfect! The cooked breakfast was so good as well. Bedroom overlooked the park and was immaculate with an incredibly comfortable bed. Will definitely be back.

Great area and great ambience. Restaurant has very good food and drink but it can get crowded and noisy on weekends. It’s a 15 minute walk through a park to center city but it’s a plus being out of the crowded noisier center. There is no safe in the rooms which I found odd and detracts from security. Otherwise it’s a wonderful boutique hotel within a short walking distance to a variety of good local restaurants

My daughter and I stayed in your hotel. This was our first trip together without any other family members. We had a Lovely greeting on arrival by a member of your staff who swiftly showed us to our room which was very pleasant. We had a very comfortable sleep and a delicious breakfast in the morning. Once again, your staff were delightful. This makes a world of difference and I really appreciated it. I worked in hospitality when I was a student and so realise the importance of being personable to visitors. We had a very positive experience together and in-fact I would love to return with my husband and son at some other point. Thank you so much for making our stay so special.

The room we stayed in had a nice view over Blackford Links, but it was small. If somebody was sitting at the desk you have to crawl over the bed to get to the other side.
The wardrobe space was filled with an ironing board, iron and a fan. We had to park the ironing board in the room to have usable space in the wardrobe.
There was no suitcase stand.

The hotel is conveniently located overlooking a nice park. The restaurant is nice and the bar is open till 1am which is great. We had a problem with the room at the beginning but our stay was made pleasant by Lucy who was extremely helpful and friendly. Overall the staff are all friendly. I esp loved going to the restaurant bar in the evening for whisky tasting . The only thing I would suggest for improvement : it would be preferable if the room has a safe , slippers and bathrobes. These are not provided .

Check in was new to us yet very efficient once we figured out where to report. The staff was very eager and attentive and helped us to our room. Our room was spacious, well appointed and well lightwith natural light and lamps at night. . Our view was disappointing - An upclose view of kitchen ventilation duct work was rather ugly. The hotel is like a boutique hotel, rather than a large hotel. The hotel is surrounded by a big park, is minutes from restaurants, cafes and shops. All of the staff are amazing. So friendly and helpful. The bar is great, the food was great and the atmosphere of the hotel is so relaxing. The rooms are not big, but very comfortable and since our intention was to sightsee and enjoy Edinburgh, we weren’t in the room a lot. From start to finish we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would have absolutely no hesitation in recommending this hotel to family or friends and would definitely stay here again.

The hotel is truly a wonderful experience. The downstairs dining and lounge areas are truly unique and lovely. You were very close to the Meadows and it’s an easy walk to St. George Square where you can pick up the hop on hop off bus easily. It’s very clean the staff are very helpful and friendly and the rooms are lovely. There is no air-conditioning, but there was an in room fan so sleeping was pleasant even in August. I would highly recommend staying at this hotel it was a unique and enjoyable experience.

Beautiful hotel and restaurant! Really enjoyed my stay, the room and staff were excellent. You walk outside and are greeted by parks in either direction. It’s residential enough to be peaceful, but a quick 5 minute walk to anything you need. They do play loud music in the restaurant on weekends until about 11pm, but I was able to fall asleep just fine. But as they say, if you can’t beat ‘em then join ‘em! Lovely stay and looking forward to returning.
My only con would be the coffee and breakfast. The espresso is quite bitter (ground amounts are off). But lunch/cocktails on the terrace was wonderful!

Beautiful property inside and outside. The rooms and restaurant/bar setup were very nice. I enjoyed the framed photography. It was awkward when I arrived because there is not a clear hotel lobby area with a desk dedicated for service - I always had to find someone in the bar or the hostess when outdoor dining was available to assist me. It would've been nice to have had a lift/elevator instead of using the stairs to get the room with heavy luggage. I would stay again, however the lack of a defined hotel service/concierge desk and access to an elevator is something that would prevent me from staying again depending on who I'm traveling with.

Very unique hotel with tons of character located just outside the bustling downtown area. We were hoping to get into our room early because we were arriving in Edinburgh in the morning. The staff did try to accommodate our request, and 2:00 is “early” relative to normal check in hours, but we were given multiple assurances which fell a wee bit shy of our hope. It’s probably best to book a room for the night before your arrival if you want to get settled once your arrive early morning. The staff, food, drinks and our overall experience was excellent so would highly recommend - we would stay there again!
