The staff were so friendly, warm and genuine. The location was absolutely perfect, couldn't believe the view of the castle from our room. Comfortable beds & lovely room. The only slight draw back was the noise from the pubs opposite at night, but the castle view more than made up for this.

The Apex in Grass market is a perfect location for the Castle, Old Town, Royal Mile and loads of restaurants, cafes and pubs.

The staff were brilliant and not just one but everyone that dealt with us over the week. They were accommodating and very pleasant.

Facilities included a spa and very clean swimming pool.

I seriously can't recommend this hotel highly enough.

Location of hotel for exploring Edinburgh is excellent and public transport to / from the Airport & further afield is excellent & easy to access. We were first time visitors & used the Airlink bus. All the hotel staff were so friendly & could not have been more helpful. The food we had, including room service one evening, was reasonably priced and delicious There is also a good selection of pubs, restaurants, shops etc including the Royal Mile, just a few steps from the hotel. The room & bathroom was very quiet, spacious and comfortable and whilst it was clean it is starting to show signs of wear. If returning to Edinburgh we would definitely book this hotel again.

Great hotel. The staff was amazing and helpful every step of the way. Even when we had to extend our stay by three days due to New York snow storm they handled it with ease. Location is perfect for exploring Edinburgh and at the end of the day of exploring there multiple choices close for food and libations.

I am disappointed with my recent stay.

On one of the nights, there was significant noise in the corridor until around 2 am. Guests were running up and down, slamming doors, and loudly singing what sounded like football songs. I was staying with a child and could not leave the room late at night. I recorded the noise at 11 pm, and it continued intermittently for several hours, making it very difficult to sleep.

There were also food leftovers left near the water station in the corridor, which caused a strong unpleasant smell.

When I raised the issue at checkout, the duty manager apologised but stated that he “cannot control the public.” While guest behaviour may not always be predictable, maintaining order in shared areas and ensuring a restful environment is part of the hotel’s responsibility.

Unfortunately, this experience affected our stay.

Rooms were good for the price. Beds were comfy. Bit outdated though, and some things to help improve the stay.
- no hooks anywhere! Two people staying in the room, nowhere to hang towels after a shower, nowhere to hang coats properly etc.
- wardrobe space taken up by kettle / drinks area and safe. This could have been better placed at the long desk area (which had lots of unused space, particularly underneath) to maximise storage space in wardrobe.
- not a suitable fan in the bathroom.
- no heating control in the room. Either got very stuffy or too cold.

Spa area was open 7am-10pm which is excellent. We used this on all 3 days. Didn’t expect it to be large, so size was expected.
However, because it is small, it was somewhat frustrating how easily it was taken up by children. Totally appreciate & respect they want the swimming time too!! But for such a small area, once the kids were there it meant there was absolutely no way you could swim or chill out. It got incredibly loud. Would be good to have a couple of set times? Like 7-8am is just adults etc.

Bar area and restaurant area were nice.

Location was excellent!! Great castle views, good location for getting everywhere and nice shops/ pubs etc close by.

Best part of this hotel was the location. Grassmarket is a short walk to the old town which was perfect.

Room was spacious, great view of the castle. Very clean, other than the chair having a stain on the seat.

The floor in and outside of the room had very creaky floorboards which woke us up a few times.

Staff were friendly, and the bar was very nice.

Room service wasn’t available on three separate occasions, (all three different days and times). I asked for another blanket they dropped a blanket off at the door with yellow stains all over it. When I contacted them about it they said they had no other blankets available, I then asked if they could at least clean it because of the stains as stated before. They said it was just stained and was “probably clean.” We didn’t end up using that blanket obviously. It was cold at night due to the window literally decaying and letting in an abundance of cold air, we also had problems heating the room with their specific heater they use it regulates how hot it gets and it felt like it maxes out at 62°F.

There were a few issues with our stay. Rooms were not ready on arrival. There was a technical issue on our last morning resulting in no heating or hot water. The only offer of any compensation is a reduced rate should we return . The actual hotel is very nice, with comfortable rooms. A special mention to Alastair who was always friendly and engaging whenever we saw him. Every hotel needs an Alastair!

Hotel is tired but staff are fabulous. We booked for the pool but got told when we arrived it was closed due to repair work. Had they told us that we would have cancelled as we wanted to swim. They did offer a taxi ride to a sister hotel over a mile away but that just did not seem sensible. It was about having the pool in the hotel. Then the heating broke, and we had an evacuation so it was a bit of an eventful stay. Staff saved it. They were excellent. Whole place needs a freshen up as tatty.
