So, you walk in through a glorious, grand Victorian Lobby, like something from the golden age of rail. And check in with helpful staff. Then walk to your room through the maze of coridoors that gradually shift to being like something from The Shining. The rooms are clean and tidy, but there is a lot of disrepair and a lot of money needs spending to fix a lot of minor issues. Also the plumbing is loud and makes all kind of ungodly noises.

Finally, its clear the hotel is cheap and central enough that people use it when they are planning night out & dont want a taxi home. Yiu hear a lot of coming and going all night & I had one drunk couple try to draw me into their argument, only to later walk past them being arrested from within the hotel.

Spend a bit of money, and this could be a great hotel. But right now its more than a little past its best

We love this hotel and usually choose to stay here when we visit Newcastle. The rooms are always clean, spacious and have everything needed. This hotel is right in the centre of Newcastle and perfect if travelling by train.

The breakfast has always been 10/10 with plenty of choice and is always fresh.

We’ve never had any previous problems when staying with staff bending over backwards to ensure a lovely stay, however, last time we visited, we were told the rooms were ready but asked to pay £20 to be in 50 minutes before check in time, which we declined. The most recent time we had to pay £100 holding deposit and we weren’t allowed to check in until we produced ID. These have not been requested previously. We obviously weren’t prepared for this and it made check in quite lengthy so I’d advise to be prepared for this.

Room was filthy, bed wasn’t made or changed in the three days we stayed and we weren’t given towels, the staff were fine but this hotel is in diabolical condition!!! We went to use the pool facilities and the pool and jacuzzi were overloaded with chlorine/chemicals and the area was dirty so obviously rather than clean the pool etc they just keep adding more chlorine so much so my eyes were red and stinging and my husband broke out in a red rash all over his shoulders and back, I was in the area because my daughter was in hospital nearby for surgery and I was absolutely devastated at the disgusting state of affairs st this property, never again!

The room was small and dated. Every floor board creaked and we could hear our neighbour enjoying his TV show.

The bathroom was tiny, barely enough space to turn around.

The only positive was Jonathan on reception who was informative and thorough with the check in process.

We were however informed we would need to put down a £100 security deposit which we were not informed about at the time of booking and we also needed to provide photo ID again we were not aware that this was a requirement

Room 442: This a lovely hotel but in need of some TLC. Rooms feel basic despite the hotel seeming very grand. The quality of the towels was poor. I had no towelling bath mat. There was a bulb out in my room and finding a good place to plug the kettle in safely was a challenge

The staff were lovely and a credit to the hotel, however the room was very tired and dirty. Marks down dressing table with tea and coffee stains, curtains were marked and stained. 4 poster bed was worn and header and footer were torn . It's a shame because the hotel itself is lovely

Hotel was quite dated, and the bed was very very uncomfortable to the point we had to ask for a mattress topper which took most of the day to come. The pool is not attached to the hotel and was cold with the changing room upstairs Nating you having to walk down quite a lot of stairs and threw a room and bare feet to get to the pool, it would’ve been nice if we had been warned to bring flip-flops. The breakfast was okay, but I would not return despite the location being very good by the train station and the cathedral.

Room was great the staff that stood out the most with great customer service and friendly and was williing to help when needed ,was johnathan manager at reception and michal manager of the restaurant , the only thing we were disappointed about was the leisure facilities fair enough you have to pay £5 per person but the fact it was not worth that concidering we have been 5 times now and this is the first time that we are not happy due to reporting that the jaccuzzi was freezing and told member of staff that it was cold and they said it just needs time to heat up

Good access to town and quey side. It was not free breakfast as indicated on survey, we had to pay £12 each if booked the previous day, which we did. Party of 4 people.

When I checked in, I was told my room was on the 4th floor but what they failed to mention was when you get out the lift at the fourth floor you then have to climb a further two flights of stairs as the room is actually in the roof. This wasn’t and issue for us but may be an issued for anyone with mobility difficulties. The room itself was tired looking and generally clean, However the bath was stained (there had obviously been water left in there at some point) and several hairs. This in itself wasn’t a huge issue.
The real issue began when we returned to our room after attending the New Year celebrations on the Quayside. The hotel is situated in a busy part of town and as it was New year we did expect some noise. However, the single glazed window in the room offered no protection at all from the noise which was unbearable and made it impossible to sleep. To make matters worse the room was freezing cold, and we could not get warm. We eventually decided in the early hours we could take the cold and noise no longer and packed our things to leave.
As we approached reception the young man ask if it was the street noise bothering us so I explained yes but also the freezing cold temperature. He stood looking very sheepish and made no effort to try and rectify the problems, so we handed in our keys and left.
Never have I stayed in a hotel so bad I had to leave in the middle of the night so the next day I emailed the hotel to which I received a reply say its was New years eve so not

We’ve stayed at the hotel over the years and noticed a change from our last visit. No longer provided with. Stocked mini fridge and have to pay to check in early and to use the onsite leisure club which is a disappointment. The leisure club gym is very basic with outdated equipment and I wouldn’t mind paying if it was more up to date rather than being tired and in need of a refresh. Staff are still lovely and welcoming which is the reason we go back. Mind you it’s about time the stair carpets were replaced and more and more have duct tape on them. Would be stay again, of course we would as the hotel is located in a perfect place.

Pros: excellent location, beautiful building and very spacious rooms. Good breakfast.

Cons: didnt have any hot water in the room, but didnt realise until morning so to late to do anything about it. Windows do open but will not stay open, need to be propped up (room 349) which made the room very stuffy.

Staff were great though with the feedback and im sure it will be sorted asap. Would stay again.

Overall a good visit with friendly staff. You need to pay extra for leisure facilities and the the pool is only open 9-5pm on weekends. With breakfast 8-10am the timings dont really work for a pre breakfast swim when youre just staying a night. Wish i had known before spending the £5.
