Being upgraded to a suite free of charge was a nice surprise, until we later found out from locals why. This is something that potential guests should be advised of, ideally prior to booking but no later than upon check in.
Given the situations that have arisen at hotels up and down the country due to locals not agreeing with people being housed in hotels, we should've been given the option to cancel the reservation ahead of arrival and book somewhere else.

We were not impressed by this hotel. The room was advertised as handicap accessible but, although the bathroom was accessible, there was no way a wheelchair user could get into the bedroom which was very small.
The room was outdated with frayed towels.
The main hotel appears to be being used for immigrants so the hotel had a strange vibe with people hanging around. There was even a security guard stationed outside. There were signs about the potential for noise and we did witness a noisy altercation one night.

Lots to improve

The Executive room itself was nice and clean and well furnished and a good size. Reception staff were friendly and welcoming.
Unfortunately there was a few things wrong. When I arrived there was a group of migrants standing outside smoking. They stared and laughed as I walked in and I felt immediately uncomfortable. Later, several staff had a loud and sweary conversation right outside my room about the behaviour of the migrants and discussed complaints from locals, and how there was a need for extra security at the hotel, so I really didn't feel safe during my stay. Also, I was right next to goods in, and was awoken at 06.30 by a delivery. There needs to be better insulation or an outer door between the room and the car park. Unfortunately I would not stay again and would not recommend

If you’re used to a North American king or queen size bed, know that these are UK Double beds, so very small by our standards. It’s like a game of Tetris to fit two people on the bed. Probably better to sleep in two twins than try to share. Room smelled of perfume trying to cover the smell of cigarettes. Shower is a lukewarm trickle. Housekeeping “cleaned” the dishes but I know for a fact they did not touch the dish soap available in the room, so I don’t know how they cleaned them. Woken up every morning by the very loud sound of doors slamming. Front desk staff did not help us when we were obviously struggling to bring suitcases up the stairs. Just stood and watched. It happens to be a convenient location for us to visit family so we will be back, but choosing two twin beds next time. If you have other options for where to stay, take them.

What an awful experience. Very old property shocking restaurant menu, so bad I didn’t eat an evening meal there and didn’t chance the breakfast.
Great little pub up the road called the Chieftain which was the only highlight of this experience .

A decent basic hotel, we were placed in the outside building which was quaint. Fire stick in the TV which was good in the eve. Comfy bed and decent shower. Breakfast buffet was a tad dire (selection of foods and really bad coffee) but they do make eggs to order which was good, I'd give it a miss and eat in Welwyn for the same cost. Location is very close to Welwyn, pub about 2 mins walk away does decent food.

Honestly we drove up and nearly drove away it was so drab and looks appalling. Clearly housing use and the sound of screaming babies from open windows we said lets just see the room as we wanted to be near Hatfield house - which it isn't really. The room was a small block next door called the peter room and it was ok. But why make it a twin room and have two towels etc but only 1 hot chocolate & 1 biscuits?? Then the noise....... there was a note on the table saying ask to switch rooms as they are aware of loud noise from next door due to it being a through door next to the tv. We could hear every single sound like they were in the same room wven when they were clearly patting a babies back to wind it. You shouldn't be able to hear things to that degree. We then turned on the air conditioning unit which is a stand alone unit snd super noisy but at least it drowned out next door.
The beds are like sleeping on the floor and the shower was a walk-in disabled shower that does not drain very well and the entire bathroom floor gets wet so lovely going to the toilet after getting wet feet and nearly slipping over each time.
I would rather sleep in my car than do this again it was absolutely awful. This is a truly honest and frank opinion of our stay.

Good sized room but bed too small!

We stayed in Hurst - a suit with a small kitchen unit and seating area. The main disappointment was the bed. At a standard 4.6\" it felt cramped (used to a ft) but the main issue is that you rolled into the middle and therefore crashing into one another. Also, the temperature was not ideal as the quilt was to narrow for the bed. It barely touched both sides.

The staff were fantastic! Friendly, responsive and smiling. We - and they - both deserved a better venue - and whilst our accommodation was perfectly clean I found it sterile. Dreadful decor, (curtains a masterpiece, a nightmare all of their own) - and I wasn't enchanted by the unkempt garden, the disabled amenities, (we are lucky enough to be full-bodied) and the adjoining door with the notice about 'noise' - it just felt a bit creepy and insecure. The venue of the hotel is really unfortunate - nothing divides it from the housing estate. The whole place needs more thought, greater use of colour and brighter materials/paint generally. Not the worst, very far from the best.

Firstly my room key didnt work, had to carry all my stuff around with me. Then the room \"Moore\" was clean but quite dated, there were no modern 3 plug sockets by the bed. Had bought food to cook as was told there was a cooker i coudl use in suit. Tried to use it but it wouldnt come on, friendly male receptionist tried to help but his manager said it was off (despite turning on but not reamining on) - was told to use microwave.. So wasted money on food i could not cook. Manager would not refund me the difference in my meal costs considering the ingredients. Ive had better experiences at this hotel but the Suites are quite dated and clearly need a refurb. .

The reception staff member was excellent, friendly and welcoming.
It has to be said the main building is extremely dated, with the public areas in need of restyling.
Having said that, we would use the hotel again if we were in the area.

I think it’s a shame as could be a lovely hotel but the cleanliness is very poor. The first bedroom we had was covered in dust, hallways dirty and even the fake flowers around were covered in dust. The bar was closed but the nice receptionist and Porter poured us a few drinks. The second night when we came back to our room to find we had no power what so ever due to another resident doing stupid things. We were quickly moved to an executive room however the smell of damp was awful and we were only given one towel. Please note the staff really did try their very best and you could see they were very under staffed due to the world today.

COVID 19 Self Isolation in this hotel

There were signs on bedroom doors stating that people were self isolating due to Covid 19. I find it hard to believe that someone from either Best Western or Hotels.com thinks it is acceptable for this to happen and not notify guests before they book.
I visit a lot of hotels due to working all over the UK. From now on I will steer clear of Best Western Hotels, if they have this policy in place.

Very polite and efficient on reception, covering a few positions as got breakfast bag ready as well. Upgraded to a different room on arrival which was a nice surprise, room very nice and modern shower room. Only quibble is that understandably they are trying to reduce contact for cleaners during this time so no proper cups or cutlery in room, but having only 1 paper cup and 1 bamboo spoon to make tea in room is not easy as it needs to be washed out between cups so gets a bit messy after a while, especially as no other spoon is provided for breakfast yogurt, however I did realize later you could ask for proper cups/spoons, maybe sign should be a bit clearer on that as not everyone reads the full page of notes. Local shops nearby to get anything you need including food during this time. This is a traditional hotel so dont expect a modern look. Pleased with stay.

The rooms were spotless, the breakfast was plentiful, check in and out was simple! The garden was lovely!! All in all easily a 10/10.

The hotel in general is really well kept, albeit a bit tired looking in places, however the rooms are a bit dated with old wooden wardrobes. The lift is something to behold ( or avoid if of a nervous disposition), that said it does work!!
You forget you’re in the middle of a housing area in WGC to be honest, it’s remarkably quiet there.
The staff were second to none, helpful friendly courteous throughout. Ample car parking too.
Breakfast very good self service, I had read reviews of staff taking your plate almost as soon as you had finished, well I can say I never experienced it personally nor saw it happen during my stay.

The room was apparently both a family room(with access to adjacent room) and designed for invalid access - which we didn’t need or request. The staff at reception were very helpful. Very outdated hotel very small bed! Bathroom was at the bottom of the bed in like a cupboard door. For the amount of money it’s just not worth it!
I spoke with reception and it was because I booked a ‘standard’ room? That is no excuse for lack of comfort, such a small bed and such outdated facilities. Will not be returning.
