Great location, convenient kitchen if you don't want to eat out every meal, room was large, clean and bright. City-facing rooms are pretty loud, and be aware that they can't store your luggage, which is mildly inconvenient. There's also in-room washer/dryer! (though I didn't use it)

I had a pleasant stay at Hotel Houze. The room was very minimal, but quite comfortable. It was also extremely quiet - which was surprising given that I was on the second floor in the middle of downtown.

A general disclaimer: The hotel is across from the main bus terminal, so there were some colorful folks hanging around on the block outside the hotel from time to time, but with other hotels and businesses nearby I, personally, never felt unsafe.

Hotel staff especially Olivia are awesome. The property is basic and needs a good cleaning. Room was minimally comfortable. No TV or internet for 3 days and General Manager Rami never returned calls or emails. Never got the same story twice on why. Cigarette butts in the elevator, cracked tiles, peeling paint. Lots of guest complaints as I waited in the lobby. Area is convenient but after dark gets questionable. DAX from airport is across street which was super convenient. Highly disappointed in management especially when I heard there was no working front desk phone which is a safety requirement. Tornado warning and staff was unprepared which is a managers job

I’ve stayed here when it was still Sonder. I would like the hotel to provide square footage of the rooms on booking sites. Also in the past Sonder would offer early check depending on the time at 20 or 30 dollars. Hotel Houze charges 50 dollars regardless of time. The earliest they allow check in is 330. 50 is a bit high for early check in. Other than that

They use digital keys so once downloaded to your phone you use your cellphone to open your hotel room door. It worked fine for a couple of days until the internet went out for the whole hotel, which meant nobody could get into their rooms. There was a key code on the rooms as a backup plan to get into your hotel room but I was given 4 key codes to use to open my door and none of them worked. Had to have hotel staff go to my room to let me into my room for two days until they got the wifi working again.

The staff was amazing. The rooms were very nice. The view we had of downtown Detroit on Michigan and Washington was awesome.

The only thing I did not like was the early check in fee of $50.00. I never had a hotel charge me for that. They should rethink that. Other than that. This location was close to restaurants, bars, and Huntington Arena. Great work.

The staff was very nice, friendly and tried to help us with the issues we had but sadly I feel this was our first and last time staying here. Our room was not swept so there were cupcake sprinkles and glitter from I’m assuming the last patrons left everywhere. So much so that I had to ask the front desk for a broom so that I could sweep the residue and hair out the room. We were not provided with any wash clothes in our room and when we asked for them we were told that they didn’t have any so the front desk brought us those big towels that you lay on the floor when stepping out the shower to use instead. On top of that, the bed looked as if the linens weren’t changed as there were leftover human hairs, black markings and black lint in the sheets. We laid on top of the covers since it was late and it took awhile for the front desk to deliver our wash cloth requests. The walls in the room had visible black scrapes on them and not just on the base of the wall, literally on high places so it was very noticeable and just added to the unclean appearance. The shower had soap scum and hairs from the last patrons left on the shower walls and the cups provided in the kitchen cabinets were not cleaned well.

The location downtown was perfect and close to a lot of shopping/eatery. However, the hotel doesn’t offer parking and the lot across the street we paid $30 nightly to park there and it was very tight and chaotic.

Not Recommended
When I first arrived, I was assigned to Room 04, which had not been cleaned. I was moved to another room, but the issues didn’t stop there.
The hotel looks more like a motel from the inside, with a metallic appearance on the upper floors. The quality of the sheets was very poor. they appeared yellow and brownish, suggesting the laundry machines are either dirty or using harsh chemicals that discolor the linens. Even worse, the blanket I was given had visible blood stains on it, which was completely unacceptable. I was on the top floor and the ceiling was actively leaking the entire stay. I had to use the dirty blankets to cover a pot catching the water. When I went to iron my blouse for my trade show the next morning, there was residue on the iron that transferred directly onto my clothes. Because the internet and phone lines were both down, I had no way to contact the front desk to request a new iron. I was left with no choice but to spend approximately 30 minutes scrubbing the iron clean with a Brillo pad myself before I could finish getting ready. The internet went out Tuesday midday and was down for the rest of my stay. During that time there were also no working phone lines, and the keypad entry system to the rooms was not functioning properly either. That said, the front desk staff were excellent and very professional. And I do appreciate that Expedia provided a 50% reimbursement after I reported thes issues.

This used to be an old apartment building that has been recently renovated with modern vibes . The rooms are full size one bedroom apartments with sizable kitchen. Great for term stays or large families. Parking is reasonable at $30 for the area with in and out privileges - located across the street. Easy walk to Little Caesar’s arena and Comerica Park. The check in is very strict at 4pm . Make sure your phone is charged because only digital keys are given.

Remote control for TV did not have batteries, had to keep switching back and forth with Roku remote.
Sent message if a complaint about next door being very loud and screaming. Sounded like young adults having a hotel party. I never got a response and the noise didn’t stop until 4am. Every single time I went in and out there was people out side soliciting begging for money. No security, if it was I never saw them around.

We really had high hopes of this property. It is in a quirky shaped building with old style features in the outside. Once inside, it was not as inviting as expected. There was a line to check in, it was just after 4 and expected. There were two front desk people, one was sitting down and let every one know that he was off the clock and waiting to leave. The front desk person that checked people in seemed friendly. When it was our turn she told us our room was having the toilet seat switched out. She tried calling to find out if it was, and said I really don’t want to check you in if it isn’t ready but I will it was just the toilet seat.
We got our code and went up to the room, we heard loud banging before we even opened the door. So, we waited in the ‘gym’ area on our floor. When the worker left the room, we heard the door slam. (Make sure you hold the door as you are closing it) We went to the room, to find towels around the toilet itself and the seat off to the side.
Overall, the room was the perfect set up for us, two bedroom. We went back downstairs, told the front desk person he was clearly not done and it was more than a toilet seat. We asked for a different room. I mentioned we would take a one bedroom if needed.
We got the one bedroom. Upon entering we noticed two smoke detectors on the table near the window with the batteries removed. The linens were clean. However, there were dusty fixtures such as the lights in the bedroom.

Overall my stay was ok. The rate was decent but our room was very very dusty from top to bottom head board and stands were also dusty I woke up stuffy from the dust. The floors were very dirty my white socks were black on the bottom but other than that it was clean. I called down for an extra blanket but they brought it up. Front desk workers were very nice I would stay again but I would ask my room to be dusted out and make sure the floors get mopped while cleaning the room prior to my arrival.

I thought for my first visit the stay was overall really good. It felt like our own little loft and being from the city that’s all we wanted. Just to continue to feel at home. The space was a great size. The kitchen was great and had everything we needed. For a simple staycation I’d definitely be back. Just wish they were more transparent about the $150 deposit that’s nowhere on the website or Expedia.

Hotel was not in the best area of town. Walking back to the hotel at night was quite scary.. The rooms were nice but need a major clean and the king size bed we had was broke so we kept rolling to the center of the bed. Did not make for a good nights sleep.

Cons: this hotel will not hold your bags. I travel pretty often and haven’t come across this before… finding a storage locker in downtown Detroit was difficult and added an unexpected headache for my backpack when I was exploring downtown. There was also a party/large gathering on the floor that was very loud at 1 am. Given the set up, I think people stay here for longer periods of time. The noise was pretty disruptive, although someone from the ground floor came up after 30 min.

The staff was exceptional however the pictures posted on the website are very deceiving. The hotel lobby is very small and the rooms are big with a washer and dryer. The bed linen and towels and washcloths were all STAINED. They moved to another room on the 10th fl and still the same concern, the linen- filthy and the door did not have a lock. We had to use the flap the secure the door. The location is prime with the less expensive with a parking fee. When offering coffee, decaf should be avaliable along with coffee creamer.

This was actually a very nice hotel. The only bad thing was our heat didn’t work. We only stayed one day but waking up to a cold room in the winter was NOT fun at all! Other than that if it was a longer trip we would’ve loved it! Its convenient location made it accessible to almost everything we attended. Rooms were very spacious and would’ve been comfy, but it was cold.

Nothing but homeless people drinking and smoking outside of the hotel doors and things kept falling apart . Rooms was very clean but very cold , heat worked but not well

Room was very cute, did not look like it belonged where it’s located! It did take a very long time for it to warm up and we had to use the stove to get warm but it was cute. The bed sits very low to the floor but it wasn’t bad…gives bachelor pad vibes. Staff was very friendly, the market next door was very convenient!

If using GPS, be more prepared than I was, both popular GPS options take you to a point in the middle of the road and don't indicate which side of the road the hotel is on, and if you are coming from the South or the East, you won't see a sign for the hotel which is just 2 recessed doors on the North side of the building, blink and you miss it. The hotel is around the corner from the New York Style deli which is either open 24/7 or very late. There are bars in both hotels across the street. Park at the lot across the street from the hotel on the West side of Washington Ave, just North of Michigan Ave.

What a dump. Sheets were the most stained sheets I've ever seen in a hotel. There was actually a cigarette burn that had been partially cut out of the sheet. There were black oil stains on several sheets. They needed to use a flat sheet over the bedspread just to cover the poor condition of the spread. Every piece of furniture had visible stains. Tables were not clean. Kitchen chair had funk on it. Even the soap dispenser in the bathroom had gunk all over it. The shower curtain was literally stained yellow in areas. I don't think I've ever been grossed out more by a hotel, and I don't think I've ever left a review on a hotel before. Best part? Check in was 4:00. We couldn't get in until after 6:00 as they forgot to clean the room before we checked in and we walked into a dirty room. I think the housekeeping staff try to do the best they can with what they've got. What a lost opportunity as the room layout is great for larger groups that need to stay somewhere downtown.

In the heart of everything downtown but also across the street from bum central (bus terminal) hotel need repairs dishwasher was filled upon arrival that made the entire room smell so bad. They tried to move us to a room that had not been cleaned yet just for us to return back to our original room with the stinch. Bathroom was not clean we was instructed to talk to management the next morning just for them to tell us he won’t be back until the next week. They never accommodated us in no way. We’ve yet to hear anything back and that was a week ago

I visited Detroit for the first time and stayed at Hotel Houze for a long weekend.
I’ll start with the staff, they were kind!
The hotel is an old building, therefore if you go in the winter months the rooms are extremely cold. The staff were aware and provided me with a space heater! It was really cold.
Next, they were short staffed in the cleaning department. At one point not having house keeping at all. I stayed for 3 nights. When I checked in the bottom of my toilet had dried up pee. The room was clean, bed was made (I hope sheets clean) lol
Sheets showed no visible dirt, but definitely not freshly white.
As far as the area. There were many many homeless people having out and asking for money when u walk out.
No parking on site, a garage across th street ($30/night)
The staff was kind.
The room had a washer, dryer, full kitchen, I didnt use any of that, but very convenient.
The worst part was the cold, but again, the staff acknowledged th issue and tried to help with the space heater.
