I'm on an '8 country tour' (yes, say it to the Gilligan's Island theme). When asked what I was most looking forward to, I said Latvia and Lithuania as they were both former Soviet bloc nations. I came from a rather swanky hotel to Viktorija Hotel. Swanky was 4 star, Viktorija 3. I guess there's a scale. I've seen other reviews, and some people were pretty hard on the place. When I arrived, I did not have a good exchange with the brunette at the front. I believe Latvian culture is quite different though, plus, there was a communication error on my part, so I'll take the brunt of that. I obtained my physical key on a wooden knob as big as a child's fist and went to my room. The hallway IS oddly dark. The room is roomy! The furniture, VERY basic, like American dorm room style. The bathroom, a butterscotchy one cm tile all around. Seemed very Soviet era. The TV, snowy. I had to laugh after swanky just because of the contrast of the two worlds. But in reality, this is what I wanted. Viktorija is just keeping it Riga real. Room was clean, bed was comfortable, shower was hot, location - plenty of walkability. TV and refrigerator unplugged. Why? they don't like vampire devices. Me neither! (Google it) They actually won my heart with this. Then I thought the dark hallway was for energy conservation. (Won my heart part ll). Would this be my choice for my 7 stays, perhaps not. For this one, I had good time. I will defend Viktorija Hotel in this moment. Now you know what to expect.

First thing I noticed when I got in the room was the state of the bed. It was the noisiest bed I have ever sat or lay on. It was also lob sided. I felt like I might fall off if I wasn't careful. The next thing was the shower room. So small that you could only stand at the side of the sink. The shower doors didn't close or and there was an awful smell which seemed to be present in the morning. No food on offer at all. No facility to make a drink in the room. Very poor. I would not be using it if I were to go back.

Transport links in the area are good however. Busses run frequently.

Pleasant stay in large room

The location is a little far away from the city centre (considering a walk) but can be reached quite quickly by public transport. The location of the hotel is nice, several restaurants and supermarkets around. The room was pretty big and spacious, nice high ceilings with a 20th century vibe. The staff was very courteous and helpful too!

Old And Out Of Date.

Sorry to complain but you should only stay here if you have zero expectations. It is inexpensive for a reason. It is old and out of date. A step above a hostel only because you get your own bathroom. Speaking of which, mine wasn't clean - there were skid marks in the toilet left by the last guy. When I went downstairs to let them know all of a sudden his English wasn't as good as it was when I first checked in. Furniture is 20 year old Ikea. Floors are worn out, bed was hard, no a/c, and the window wouldn't open. Plus, it is right on a busy street so the noise is awful. You truly get what you pay for here.

The property, despite showing it's age internally, was still busy, and met my requirements for walking/travel around Riga. Couple of supermarkets, along with tram/bus stops in close proximity. Quiet lounge/bar on premises.
Town Centre comprising 2 large shopping centres/Railway Station and bus links, along with a choice of fast food outlets around 20 minutes away - slightly longer to the many historical sights.

Reasonable budget hotel close to Old Town

Viktorija Hotel is based centrally in Riga. It's easy to access the old town in as little as 15 minutes by bus. It's maybe not the most luxurious of hotels. The rooms are basic but comfy enough and the hotel is clean. My room was refreshed daily.
My room was very warm though and only a window near a busy street to let any air in. The plug sockets were in strange places too. One behind the bed and one below the TV. The room had a small fridge but it shared a socket with the TV. Fine if you don't speak Latvian or Russian. It was all dubbed.
The counter was a little succinct and I don't think English was fluently spoken but I was able to check in fine.
Overall it's a perfectly reasonable budget hotel with its location a plus point.

Wifi was usually decent. Staff were professional but not friendly which seems to be a cultural norm. Place was cleaned daily.
Restaurant was closed for renovations so no breakfast and despite being advertised as air conditioned it was not and without even a fan was difficult. Window opened about 1 inch inward but that did not help.

Wi-Fi kept going out. Skimpy mattress, skimpy cover. Curtains did not fully cover windows. Horrible maintenance- sink dripped and door hinges needed lubricant to stop making noise.
Not an expensive place so you get what you get. Parking was about 300 meters away and was only € 5 per night which was the best deal here.

The building is very old fashioned but quaint somehow. The beds were comfortable and there was no noise. We didn’t book breakfast so we’re unable to have any so if you want it book in advance. Reception was very friendly and spoke good English.

It was 18 quid a night and it was clean, warm, quiet and convenient. You're not going to get much in the way of facilities for that but if all you want is somewhere to sleep, good internet, a 20 minute walk into town and coffee across the road you won't go far wrong.

Located 15 mins from town centre/river, so well-placed to discover some of the outlying areas and sights. Local store right next door (8am-10pm) and other larger stores within 5 minutes for all food/beer and household stuff. Riga season seems to end 1st Sept so some facilities not available but this to be expected in what is mainly a working city. 24 hour reception and nice, helpful staff. Old but characterful architecture

My stay at the Victoria hotel, Riga Latvia

Clean, comfortable and reasonably priced. A bit of a walk(30 minutes) to old town. Service average. Though breakfast served each morning ,representatives did not mention it was served on second floor ..not obvious to guests.
Upon check out, clerk could not provide Stay details or receipt. ( not their policy ). A good choice if you don’t mind taking a few taxis to get around Riga.
Dry quiet, very clean and comfortable.with a little focus on service details this review would have been more positive.

This had to be the worst hotel I have ever stayed at... The room I was given had to be the maid's room... Front desk assistance we're rude and unhelpful when asked about getting around in Riga.. I had planned to stay there.. 2 nights.. but went elsewhere on the second night... I would never recommend this place to my worst enemy

The hotel is located near the central station and not far from the center but the condition and service could be better. The room is ok but the paint needs to be redone the bathroom was dirty, the wallpaper was falling of the wall. There was no AC or fan in the room. As well as no safe. There was a dance studio in the building and the music was very loud since we had to keep windows open for air we couldn’t sleep. The receptionist said she has nothing to do with it and to basically just deal with it.

Not a good hotel, but cheap price

I stayed in 4 rooms in this hotel and each one is slightly different than the rest.
Cons:
The general state of the rooms were old, I would not recommend a long term stay here, maximum 1-3 days. Also if you are coming with a significant other on a honeymoon definitely not this hotel.The toilet were in some rooms slanting, meaning if you are sitting down you feel like you are falling off. Some rooms had a smell to them. The shower floor was dotted black, some rooms more than others. The counter lady when we arrived late, apparently was clueless of the booking, she did not know what to do, whether I paid or not, and then she went on the phone for 10 minutes. As for breakfast, I would advise going out. In one room the internet was terrible, it kept switching on and off.

Pros:
Close to city center and very cheap. Their double rooms were huge, I would advise paying the extra 10 euros to get the larger rooms.

15 minutes from the city center. Bus run out side the hotel.
They were digging up the street 25-8-17to28-8-17 which caused problems crossing the street butshoud be fixed by know. Room clean staff helpful with booking a taxi to the airport for me and friendly.

Very outdated, needs attention. Not the friendliest staff. Cleaning could have been better, it wasn't pleasant feeling to find the previous customer's hair in the washing basin. Next time will add few more euros and will choose another hotel.

Lovely place in Old Town Tallinn

A very lovely hostel in Old Tallinn very close to all major attractions in Old Town. Free tea and coffee and a very cheap breakfast. Staffs very friendly! The only downside to this hostel was the internet connection. I could not get any connection in the room but you get better connection in the lounge area.

On arrival, I was informed that I couldn't register before 1pm (45 minutes) and they insisted I left my suitcase in their storage area. I sat in reception and waited. Others came and registered but when I protested, they told me I had to wait till 1 pm. At 1pm there was a young man already at reception encountering a problem. He had a South African accent, Italian passport and had flown in from Norway and had arranged for an item to be delivered to the hotel by courier to await him that hadn't arrived. The receptionist obviously didn't understand 'courier' and kept on saying, 'post' and staring blankly into her monitor.
Some time before 4am I was woken to the sound of smashing of glass, sweeping of glass on stone, hammering and drilling. In the morning at reception, I reported this, to which they responded, 'You have broken a window?'.
At breakfast there was dried eggshell stuck to my 'clean' cereal spoon.
One morning, the lift on my floor refused to work so walked down the emergency stairs, only to discover that on the ground floor the exit door was locked. I walked back up to the first floor and managed to summon the lift from there.

This is an old style art deco hotel with some interesting paint combinations in the hallway, but the rooms are decorated quite pleasant. There is a small elevator. Parking is very limited and is 4 Euro per night. There are many pubs and restaurants in a 10 minute walking distance. Main tourist sites are about 30 minutes or so walk, but there is public transportation on the street behind. Good value for money. The staff were very helpful.

EXTREMELY clean hotel with friendly staff.

Decor is somewhat dated but the hotel is EXTREMELY clean and well kept. The staff were great. The breakfast is quite good and runs from 0800-1200. After 11, they add light lunch fare. Chicken nuggets and things like that. I would stay there again. I recommend eating at the LIDO just around the corner.

Pleasant surprise in Riga!

I was not expecting much after reading the previous reviews. I must say, all of us were pleasantly surprised once we checked in. The rooms are somewhat dated with their furnishings, but very, very clean. One thing I noticed is that they have duvets instead of bead spreads. It is obvious they change and clean these often. Originally only 2 of us booked here then once my friends saw the rooms, 4 more booked rooms. The staff was very friendly and were very helpful with recommendations for food and taxis. Breakfast was included with the rooms and offered quite a selection. It is served from 0800-noon. As noon approached, they add light lunch items as well.
It is a little walk from Old Town, but only a 5 euro (or less) taxi. If the weather is nice, it is a nice walk fom the hotel to Old Town. There is a supermarket and ATM adjacent to the hotel.
My room was on the 2nd floor, front of the hotel. I slept with the window open and did get some (a good bit) noise from the street. This was only on Friday night. The other nights, very quiet.
I would definitely recommend this hotel and would stay again.

Good enough for the price!

We had a 3 night stay here, it was fine, 10 minutes walk from the old town which is lovely. Room was great, with a separate sitting area (think it was room 416?) the decor was a bit dated and dark, and breakfast not the best. Otherwise, we really enjoyed our stay.
