Nice hotel to stay close to the city center, but be a bit out of parties areas. Easy to get to the Old Town by public transport or taking a 15-20 minutes stroll. Good that this hotel offers on-site parking by surcharge. Very convenient if you travel by car.
Hotel staff was really welcoming. Breakfast is included and is quite good with some local food.
Our room was clean and contained quite a lot of amenities like a safe, a minibar etc. Double bed was comfy and provided nice sleep. I would stay here again.

The rooms are not as beautiful as in the uploaded photos. The furniture in the room looks a little bit overused, the towels in the bathroom as well. The breakfast is far from a 4star hotel's breakfast. The staff was kind and helpful.

Nice place. Budget in appearance and location. Not too far to walk to town and the train station. Staff were helpful but overrun with people so it took ages at the reception desk whenever you wanted something. Breakfast was good. Not suitable for those that find stairs difficult because there is no access to the breakfast room otherwise.

I will come back!

The hotel is great. Although it has the first impression of a classic (old) hotel, it is super clean. The bathroom is completely remodeled and looks new. The staff at the reception are very kind and helpful, the wi-fi works great all the time, and the buffet breakfast is delicious!

Good hotel, about 10 mins walk from Old Town. We booked an economy double which was small but met our needs. The bathroom was clean and very modern. The only minor negative was that the beds were a tad uncomfortable. We would return if we could ensure a more comfortable bed next time.

A great value hotel and would recommend for a stay in Riga. A bit tired in places and the reception / bar area could be made more sociable but the room and facilities in it were great and the breakfast plentiful. Old Town about 20 minutes walk away which is just about right.

The title says it all the hotel was comfortable and close to the city. There were some small little niggles like the AC unit was not really good for the room and made random noises making you randomly wake up at night. The breakfast was quite varied so sort of made up for the AC so an ok place to stay.

Hotel is located in 20 minutes walk to the Old Town of Riga. Our room was clean and comfortable. Hotel staff was kind and helpful. There is limited parking space in the yard (I got one!), but you need to pay for it.
On check-out I was informed that we have used something from minibar, but we didn't. So be careful if you use something to avoid to pay for something that you didn't use. Receptionist understood that they have some mistake and we were not charged at the end.

Bad experience in Rixwell Gertrude hotel

The location of this hotel is bad for tourists, because it is a 25 minute walk to the start of the old town. When I arrived at the hotel the receptionist asked me if I would wait five minutes until she returned. She did not return for much longer and she could easily have checked me in before she went on her break. She then asked me for a €50 cash deposit to cover the cost of anything I might use in the minibar, which is abnormal. I got into the lift where I read a notice that the water would not be working in the whole hotel that day from 13 to 19 hours. When I entered my room I saw that the curtains were useless, as they were so thin, and the room was facing east. I had also asked for a quiet room and was given a room facing the street with busy traffic. I returned to the receptionist and asked her to change my room and she refused saying that the curtains were the same in all rooms. She could have moved me to the west side of the building where the sun does not rise and where it was quiet. As a result I was woken up at 4.15am with sunlight pouring into the room (as it is near mid-summer). By 6am the room was like an oven. The shower was also broken. It could not be fixed in place and the pressure of the water made it turn and send the water onto the floor. The carpet under the beds was very dirty. The receptionist and a lady in the breakfast room were rude. No one was helpful. If repairs were made and the staff were polite this hotel would deserve not more than 3 stars.

Not a 4-star hotel, don't believe in the photos.

Everything was fine apart from the physical infrastructure and decoration of the hotel, which is rather old. Definitely not a 4-star hotel, but a good 3-star. The photos of the rooms are deceiving, particularly when you book economy ones.

Nice hotel with very helpful staff. It's a bit of a walk to the old town but it didn't bother us, we tried to use a different road each time we walked in so that we saw as much of the new town as we could. A good stay overall.

The only problem we had was that the hotel is about a 25 minute walk into the Old Town but that is probably reflected in the price. Riga is a lovely city for a short break - lots to see and do - although quite a walk from the hotel.

Convenient location for all things Riga. Polite but dour staff. Mind you, a smile doesn't come easy anywhere in Riga as far as we could see. Very clean. Nice rooms and good breakfast. Small bar downstairs staffed by busy reception staff. Overwhelmed by large tour groups all wanting drinks at the same time. Taxis are cheap to mostly everywhere. O K really and nothing to seriously moan about but some Didney style training for the staff wouldn't go amiss

Excellent visit to Riga!

Stayed here for 3 nights in a standard double room at the end of March. The hotel was very clean and comfortable. The breakfast choice was excellent! Reception Staff were friendly and helpful. The old town of Riga could be accessed by walking and it was relatively easy to discover the geography of the quickest routes to places from the hotel. Visited KGB house nearby and had fascinating guided tour; also interesting Occupation Museum; walked over the span bridge to the Janis Lipke museum- well worth visiting- a remarkable man. Excellent Free Walking tour- 2hrs 45 with Kaspers from Riga Free Tours- areas outside the Old Town.Great panoramic views from top floors of the old Russian state building behind the station and also Radisson Hotel near Esplanade. Took train to Majori/ Dubulti- amazing beach by the Baltic Sea! The Lido Restaurant chain provides inexpensive food and great cakes. Near the Hotel on Gertrudes iela however is CEMODANS a great restaurant serving a wide choice of brilliant quality good value food - perfect surroundings and very attentive but unobtrusive staff- would highly recommend!

Nice clean and comfortable hotel, well situated although a fair walk from the main attractions.staff polite and helpful however if you book any spa treatments be prepared to have them cancelled! I booked a treatment and then received a call to ask me to change the time which I did then whilst out sightseeing received another call saying there had been a communication problem and I couldn't have the treatment at the time I had booked but could be fitted in middle of afternoon, this I declined as I had gone for the sightseeing not beauty treatments hence I had booked early evening appointments. Found this very disappointing and felt as though the spa was not for the convenience of the guests but the convenience of the therapists.

Plus Points: Free WiFi with a good connection throughout the hotel, friendly and helpful staff, breakfast.

Minus Points: TV did not work due to no antenna connection, not good when you have kids.
No Restaurant, although Breakfast room could make a ideal restaurant for the evenings, Hotel Bar has space for 9 people!

Overall: i would stay here again and recommend to friends, location is ideal to the center of Riga with good bus and tram connections.

Great expectations , however not fulfilled

The hotel booking for this stay gave us some great expectations but we can not say they lived up to those. The stay turned out to be OK but not great. There were four things that bring me to this conclusion. First the family room where the booking stated one queen bed and two separate beds for 4 people, we got one queen bed and a sleeping sofa in the living room. We also looked forward to the massage opportunities, however the times available was minimal. The third was the lack of friendly smiles and welcome salutes in the breakfast room from the staff and finally the old personal stuff we found under the bed not belonging to us. Otherwise, the stay was good but I must say I have visited several better hotels.

Good hotel close to city centre

Myself and my friend stayed 4 nights in the hotel. Room small but had all that was needed including tea and coffee making facility. Breakfast was excellent. Staff very helpful. Asked for squeaking door to bathroom to be fixed and this was done immediately and with minimum of fuss.

The hotel is a 15 min walk from the old town which was the only minus point. It was not a problem for us at all but you may not have the same experience as staying at the heart of the old town. The hotel itself was great - Very helpful and courteous staff, fantastic options for breakfast, comfortable bed and good facilities. We loved the bath tub which was home like.

The hotel is located near the city center, although not close to tourist destinations. The neighborhood is a bit run-down, though quite safe. The overall appearance of the hotel is quite pleasant with rooms tastefully decorated.

We stayed from 22nd-26th February. Arrived late but check in was quick. We were on the 5th floor and our double room was a good size.
The breakfast is served 7-11am every morning and there is a good selection of hot and cold food. There is also sparkling wine for those who want it.
The hotel is only about a 15-20 minute walk to the old town. There are a few restaurants and bars within a few minutes walk though.
Would recommend for a short break, we enjoyed our stay.

Hi, there was a group of 6 of us staying, the hotel did their best to cater for our rooms being near to one another. Breakfast was brilliant with lots of choice. Helpful staff who spoke good English and smiled (normal to us, but not standard for them to smile often) nearby to the tram routes and walking distance to all central sites. Good lifts and luggage area to store bags after checking out.

On main road. To be honest not much to do we shopped bought fab pair of boots leather £22. Bargain. Went on one to one afternoon trip with
Rigaguide private tours. Zane was very knowledgable. Took us too sigulda. Beautiful scenery especially magical in the snow.

Hotel was pretty good - large, clean comfortable rooms with a great breakfast selection. The English speaking staff were extremely helpful to us. It is about 20 minutes walk to the old town but for us that wasn't a problem and taxis were cheap if we couldn't be bothered to walk after a night out. Only tiny gripe was the lack of coffee in the rooms and the fact there was only 1 teabag in a room for two! Having said that we couldn't be bothered to moan about it and just bought some at the small shop around the corner. Riga is a great place for a short city break - pretty old town, christmas markets and lots of fun places to eat and drink. Recommended.

Good hotel if you want 4 Star Hotel

Everything is fine but heating was not good at all , after 2 days , they did provide me heater in the room , I had very Large room which I paid for , it happened to be my Birthday during my stay , staff was kind and send me drink , chocolate a greeting , I had very good stay , looking forward to stay again in 2 months time ........... staff is very helpful , hotel is very clean and breakfast is very good too , the best hotel in the city , the cost of room is very good ..............

old town alternative, but not great

i moved into this hotel from another 4 star on the other side of the river. it's definitely closer to the old town and from a trustworthy brand, however it's a mix bag for me.
the good: it has the facilities of a 4 star, in room safe, air conditioning, electronic kettle for making coffee or tea. clean room and a deep bathtub in the bathroom that is rare to find in smaller hotels.
the soso: breakfast is ok, the selection is very limited but enough to get the day going.
the bad: the transportation is a little bit awkward because it's not that close to the main streets where the buses or trolleys run. it took some effort for me to discover the nearest stops for different route, otherwise the walking to old town is at least 15 minutes; what i hate the most is the bed, the pillows are small and not comfortable, the mattress saggy and there are 2 very narrow quilts for the double bed, in fact it's so narrow that i could barely cover myself and i am a skinny guy, not sure how other plus people can survive.
i would still recommend this hotel for it's competitive rate, but be warned of the sleeping quality.

Pleasant stay

Stayed for 5 nights. No complaints. I liked the location - not too close to centre to be noisy, but easily accessible by tram or walking. I asked for a quiet room and was given one. Everything worked and was clean. The staff were good. The mini bar was viable - no worrying about bankrupting yourself if you fancy a beer and some nuts. There is a drinks fridge at reception with shop prices. On the same street there is a high class restaurant and also an outlet of the famous cafeteria chain, if you want something cheap and filling. Further west are more restaurants, including a very good Indian. I recommend this hotel.

Room and Breakfast is 4 star, but the rest is no more then 2 star... bad location, poor location, you will need a car to get to the city center, and the area is at best very shabby. As it is presented as a 4 star we missed it a few times before the hotel was pointed out to us.

Comfortable good quality Russian style hotel

Clean, comfortable Russian style hotel.Good price-quality relationship.Free parking possible nearby.Walking distance to the center of the town.Silent at night, comfortable bed, good sleep.Tea & coffee making facilities. Very few non Russian TV channels.Funny check out procedure where you have to wait until hotel service will check your room in order to see if is anything stolen or damaged.

A bit far from the old town. Walk 15-20 minutes.

Few eating places, or service near by.
Good value.

Breakfast OK, ESPECIALLY for two days.
Room is big.
