Chester College teachers annual reunion.

In my opinion this was a low budget hotel which served the needs of my brother and myself adequately. We just needed somewhere to bed down for the night and the Dene Hotel was the ideal place due to it's location.

I stayed for 3 nights during February 2022. The staff were friendly and welcoming. My room was very spacious (the biggest one they have, I think). The shower was powerful and I had a comfortable night's sleep. I looked at the smaller doubles whilst I was there and would also book one of those. A very interesting building, spacious, airy and with lots of potential. Good value for money. Handy for the centre of Chester - either a 15 minute walk (average speed) or a few minutes in a taxi. The pub next door does excellent value for money food, so all in all a good location.

Needs a serious makeover.

The hotel itself is very run down. It has a low star rating anyway but you can pay half the price for more stars and it would be much nicer. This was convenient me for location but I could have paid less and been a little further out. Too expensive for what it was. Have no idea about facilities because I was not told of any. Rooms are still key style which is very dated and the room smelt. However staff were very friendly.

Hotel is very tired, no bar ,no breakfast, beds are to soft,pillow flat ,no choice for more pillows, dirty carpets, big air gaps around door frame, broken electrical heater in room, not enough soaps, noisy air con from next door.

Got there with my granddaughter. Sent to the annex, where it seemed to be workmen’s quarters. Bed a bit lumpy. The staff are very nice friendly and helpful. Overall somewhere to sleep.

The free on-site parking was nice. Other than that, it was very disappointing.
Couldn't use the wifi in the room, and they wouldn't let me sit in the lobby (even though some of their staff did).
One tiny trash bin in the bathroom (and not room cleaning during Covid, so the trash did pile up).
Window only opened a few inches, so the room was hot and stuffy.
Hotel is old. It seemed that most of the rooms were being used to house at-risk or homeless people. Nothing wrong with that, but perhaps that could be made public.

The television did not work on the Saturday night & Sunday morning,also there was allot off homeless drug addicts etc.people there housed by the council which i should have been informed about,i had a man ask me outside if i had any money 4 a hot meal,which was not nice.I only stayed for 1 night instead off the 2 nights i had paid for.I did have £10 refund paid back for the telivivsion.But i feel i should get a full refund as it messed all my plans i had made 2 c my family.please advise. No tv for the week not impressed sorry

When i checked in a few people standing outside fags in gob and some worse for wear. Checked in to a superior room no paint on bathroom door bath panel kicked in poxy little heater and the start of no tv. Pointed out no tv to reception got told they knew about problem being sorted Tuesday night the same but there was other entertainment 2 ambulances outside assisting the druggy who was totally off his head this is when i found out there where alot out homeless being put up they even got dinners delivered from the salvation army. While i was talking to reception about the ambulance 2 other guys came in absolutely pxssed. By this time im thinking should have gone to the premier but thought no give the small independent hotels my support but Wednesday night still no tv . Thursday night i went a little to town and said dissapointed that still no tv at about 7pm on the thursday i could move room to one with tv i reset my tv and managed to get limited channels bbc1 being one of them so i just watched the football. People booking this hotel should be told about who the other guest are im not knocking what is happening but when you see guest hardly able to stand and your van park outside with 1000's of pounds of kit you dont sleep easy

I was terrified after reading some reviews! Does it need a refurb? Yes. Could it do with a deep clean? Probably. Are the mattresses the most comfy? Not really. Will it do for our one night getaway between days out? Absolutely! It’s run down and I wouldn’t trust the door enough to leave valuables while I wasn’t here but honestly the bed was clean, the toilet was clean, the bath was needing some TLC but it was clean! You get what you pay for and if your booking the cheapest option that’s what you will get, i’ve stayed in much worse places. The room is big, it’s got a decent size TV and It’s well located. I wouldn’t stay here for a week but would probably come back again for a stopover. Also lady on front desk super friendly.

Reception staff were amazing. Friendly, chatty. Nothing too much.

The hotel was in dire need of upgrading. Rotten wood windows, room decor must have been done by Mr Magoo.

Other hotel residents were the homeless that had been brought in due to Covid. Sat outside hotel reception, making their rollies and asking for a light.
Breakfast was supposed to be available, but wasnt. Yet every day their was bags of food, and polystyrene packages left next for the homeless residents.

I understand and support the whole homeless off the streets agenda, but frustrating when im paying for a dilapidated, homeless building.

Nice little surprise.

Online reviews made this place sound dilapidated and filthy. We found staff (especially Charlotte on reception) really friendly and helpful, the room was nicer and more spacious than you'd get at a Premier Inn or somewhere like that. For a 2 star hotel we were very happy. Bring a hairdryer though, as they don't have them in the rooms.
Or TV remotes.

Dirty bathroom, and the place is full of the homeless swearing and shouting outside of reception where they all smoke! I know in times like these the homeless need somewhere safe but please either warn paying guest that they are shairing the hotel with them just have homeless staying there!! Wasn’t worth the £54 spent on the room!

Absolutely atrocious!
We have been ripped off. After our first room was grotty , we got charged an extra £35 to go into, apparently, their better room. Wow, No! Fixtures broken, window lose, £85 for that, it was appalling.
The whole hotel needs some serious TLC.
We will be putting a proper review on trip advisor.
These are some of the photos between the two rooms. I wouldn't of paid more than £15 for either rooms. But it was £50 for the first!

The manager/owner should be utterly ashamed.

Greeted by reception staff smoking outside in the doorway. As a non smoker smelt vile. Room was meant to be double delux. Nothing delux about the fusty smell. Bathroom tiles a little mouldy . Woke up to a spider on my pillow next to me. I get we all have spiders but to some this would of freaked them out. The hotel had housing association people in which (I’m not a snob) were smelly and loud and looked dirty. I wil not be staying here again !!

Cheap and cheerful. We stayed in the executive double room which had a large bed, wall mounted TV, sofa, en suite bathroom, with towels and drinks provided. Overall the room was clean and bedding was fresh so no complaints. Staff were friendly and helpful.

Can’t complain at all. For what it’s advertised as (2 star) it’s a 5/5 hotel room. It doesn’t claim to be the very best, but what it is is very good value for money and a comfortable place to stay if you need a cheap room in Chester

To be honest, I think some of the negative complaints are a bit stuck up. If you want absolute perfection and everything then you’d pay for a 5 star hotel.

Cold room and dark room - heating didn't seem to be on at any point, and barely had any lighting. Tired and old decor - really needs a full rework. TV didn't work. Didn't feel clean. Door to bathroom had been removed from the frame and mounted as a sliding one for some reason and did not actually cover the door frame.

The room of the hotel was very spacious, however it was very very basic which was fine for my needs of the trip. The beds were very comfortable.the cleanliness of the room was lacking with dirty carpets and skirting boards away from the walls in the shower room. My main moan is how cold the room was.when i mentioned it to the reception staff they said the heating was on a timer and needed to be looked at.

Beds all broken, room was dirty, mould around the windows, paint chipping off, carpets not hoovered properly. Worst of all we’re the mattresses. All the mattresses were so worn there were body indentations so when you laid down, you laid in a dip. I wouldn’t expect this standard from the worst hostels. I’m sorry as I don’t like to give bad reviews but if you stay here, don’t expect comfort!

Dirty, Cold, Dangerous!

Loose and live wire about the headboard that had in proper capping on it. Hazardous and could kill someone.

The door had a huge gap underneath it so I could hear everything from the hall and the exit door right outside it. I didn’t get any sleep. It was freezing too but the heat system was turned off when I rang to ask front desk.

The bathroom had no heat ( broken radiator) so was freezing in there. The bathroom had the only window in the entire windowless room. The toilet seat and toilet were dirty and the seat was falling off.

The dirty/ mouldy shower had no cold or lower function so spewed scolding hot water. The head to the shower was also broken and the angle couldn’t be changed either to shower properly.

Asked for a refund as it seems only fitting but no joy. My over all experience has been poor since the facilities nor the experience was a fitting end to my weekend away.

Lovely friendly reception. Very helpful with a warm welcome. Good parking. Room 24 suitable for my needs however a paint refresh is needed, especially on the wall by the door, its taken a long time for the stains to be deeply ingrained from people and luggage rubbing against it as they enter the room. Bed sheet is not fitted so you wake up laying on the mattress (this is not good for obvious reasons). Heating goes off at, or about 2200, it was cold on my first two nights and woke up a couple of times freezing. I was up for work at 0430 and it was very uncomfortable because of the cold. Don't mean to complain but in winter, warmth is a basic human need and not a lot to ask for. Feeling warm makes other minor deficits more tolerable.

I booked this as a last minute stop over. I was not expecting the Ritz considering the price however, the room was really cold on arrival, windows were broken and taped shut, sockets were smashed, bathroom was dirty, bedsheets were stained, mould on the windows, constant noise from outside - not from a road or guests but staff. I have tried on several occasions to contact the hotel to no avail, not even an acknowledgement, which is disappointing.

I had a single room and it was the worse room I have ever stayed in. Apart from the very shabby state of it, I could hear every thing that was going on in the room above me. Even them running a tap in the night woke me up it was so loud. There was no wardrobe and I felt I have to wipe the surfaces as it all looked a bit grubby. I definitely would not stay there again.

Arrived late, very tired so would have appreciated a lift being available but hey it was struggle up the stairs with my heavy wheelie case.
Furniture in bar and bedroom shabby and tired but comfortable.
Bedroom 12 spotlessly clean...well done cleaners!
Hot water to wash basin took ages to come through. Temperature in shower not controllable! Wow, a health & safety issue; I was being steamed alive!
Comfortable bed and efficient wi-fi.
On leaving the receptionist said that maintenance would look at the shower! I wonder if that happened?

The staff at the desk were lovely.
The room wasnt the greatest but ok for what we needed. But the noise was unbearable. People in the rooms upstairs shouting and screaming coming in and out. Last night they came back to the hotel drunk and were shouting. Nobody came to ask them to be quiet. Floorboards from their room constantly creaking. And their bed. Constant smell of weed out by our windows from the people above and groups of youngsters outside all the time.
I wouldnt stay again. And to be fsir, we live 6hrs drive away so were really disappointed with our stat

Receptionist was the bairmaid and cleaner. Resulting in a wait every time.
Cobwebs all over the ceiling in the room meaning we had spiders everywhere!
Bathroom was extremely poor. My girlfriend wouldnt even shower as it looked so bad. Mould all over the ceiling and walls, shower curtain was disgusting also!

Apart from that...a decent enough hotel for a couple of nights away where you dont spend too much time in the room

Virtually no space for clothes, the room was smaller than expected. No bedside tables or lamps, very poor lighting. Sliding door into bathroom-the door rail was a trip hazard and hurt when stood on accidentally. Curtains were threadbare in places. Two separate taxi drivers told us that the hotel has a bad reputation and that we couldn’t have chosen a worse hotel.

This place has heart. The staff are wonderful and accommodating and truly doing their best, but the property is a little lacking in upkeep. The bathrooms/lavatories look like they've been updated. Ground floor rooms may hear a squeak or two from the floor above. Pub located in reception gets quite active at night. Walls are a little thin, but not too bad. Great value for the price, especially if you just need a clean bed for a sleep.

Really disappointing - tired and overpriced

This was not worth £150 per room per night. It should have been made clearer that we were to be put in the rundown annexe when we booked. The carpets and chairs were stained, the roofing tiles chipped and broken, there was no remote for the tv, there were no coat hangers in the wardrobe. The whole hotel is in need of some tlc. This standard of accommodation is more in line with £50 per room per night than £150. The bottled beer we were served in the bar was past its sell by date too.

Couldn't even park in car park . I was sat on the bed and couldn't stop itching all over.until i had a shower at new hotel. I wouldn't even keep a dog in there . It could do with a complete refurbishment. The whole place looked \"tired\". The grounds didn't look cared for at all. We had to find our own rooms and struggled with our luggage as there was no lift. In fact one step must've been nearly 12\" high.

The hotel needs a great deal of work done, cleanup inside and out, to remove the mould. Carpets need a good cleaning, toilet didn’t flush after use, the member of staff said she would get someone to look at it the next day implying I should put up with it because she only had a four bedroom she could put me in. My booking was for two nights and I ended up in three different bedrooms. Furniture is very tired. Second days breakfast was cold. Hotel was totally disgusting. Needless to say I will never stay at the Dene Hotel again.

Good Value

Basic accommodation but very good value for money. Good location with parking. Very friendly and extremely helpful staff. At the price no one could have any complaints
