Truly tremendous venue by the Beaulieu River, surrounded by many interesting historic places to visit and the wonders of the New Forest. Excellent accommodation, lovely meals, good bar and plenty of caring for our dog too.

This is the second time we have stayed at Master Builders Hotel and it was just as good as the first.
This time our room was on the second floor facing across the Beaulieu river with views through all three windows. As it is an old building be prepared for squeaky floor boards and some sound which may come through the interior walls.

The food in the restaurant is pricey but is decent quality which is worth the money. The menu does cater for various tastes and wallets.

The walk along the river to Beaulieu is thoroughly recommended as is a trip to Beaulieu motor museum.

Gorgeous location but, in the run up to my stay, I was bombarded with calls from The Master Builder hotel offering me £25 discount if I cancelled my Expedia booking and booked with The Master Builder direct. I was very uncomfortable with this (and kept my booking with Expedia in place).

Well worth a stay

A lovely place to stay. Beautiful room , very smart and clean, lovely river views, comfy bed and spotless linen.Only downside to room 19 is the noise during the day and early eve from people eating below on the terrace, but very quiet overnight. Also before 9am in the morning, hammer banging and electric drill noise outside window next to our headboard, suggest workmen check if room occupied before commencing work! But overall would recommend a stay, the staff were all very friendly and attentive and dinner in the restaurant was excellent.

Another very pleasant stay. Rooms have been slightly redecorated since our last visit, and stair carpets renewed.
Menu has also improved in Harry's Bar with better choices & more vegetables included with dishes. Scallops were excellent as were the burger & ham, egg & chips!
Nice cooked breakfast, but continental alittle lacking still.
Overall, a really nice place to stay for a night or two if you value tranquility over amenities...perfect for us. Possibly not so good for younger families though.

The room was very nice.
The whole experience was relaxing and we were looked after very very well.

Fabulous place to stay, all of the staff that we met were, happy, helpful and content.
Our only disappointment was that 20% service charge is added to everything that you purchase, especially harsh in the pub when it's over £10 for a pint of beer and a packet of nuts, don't mind paying that fee in the restaurant where you are served at the table. But for pouring a glass of wine or pulling a pint of beer NO, NOT ON.

Remote, quiet and peaceful bliss!

Perfect for a winter break away from it all! Despite being cold outside the hotel was amazingly cosy. We loved that we could actually see the stars in the night sky due to lack of light pollution. Dinner in Henry’s was fabulous. We slept so well as there is no traffic noise. The perfect little mini break in a very interesting and historic location. Wonderful for anyone with a particular interest in all things nautical!

The bedroom was ok, clean and a good size. Room 11, is very noisy due to its position close to the car park. With cars coming and going, driving on the pebble covered parking area.
The restaurant staff need to be trained in how to serve and to check if a table needs to be cleared.
At breakfast, our used cereal bowls and used side plates were left on the table during the whole time we were sitting at the table. I got feed up with this and removed the dirty items my self.
I think that the prices in the restaurant and the pub are a bit on the expensive side, in the bar £19 for haddock, chips and minted crushed
peas. £10 for desserts, total for soft drink, main course and dessert came to £75.
In the main restaurant, we had dinner, 2 people, main and dessert, soft drink, came to £105 with no wine. The food was only average.
I think the bottom line is that we would not come back to the hotel. And would not recommend it to friends. I’d give it 6/10.

Love Bucklers Hard visited decades ago & The Hotel. Professional check-in. Room in the older part of the hotel, wear & tear on the stairs. Carpet threadbare, paintwork chipped, handrails sticky. Forgave this in a 300 year old building. Rooms well presented & clean. Bathroom tired, poor sealants, dirty tile grout. Bramley bathroom products. Beds comfortable & linen clean. River views. All OK so far. Some issues from this point. Hotel has a monopoly on food. Choice is the restaurant, or ‘Harry’s’ pub. We ate at Harry’s. Prices average/high. Steak £24 Burger £16 Lamb chop £20; drinks also average/high. Waitress was fun. Food is where it gets sketchy. Steak & chop didn’t come with additional vegetables. It seemed so mean! A ploy to order more? It’s typical in the UK to have at least one second veg. The food itself was ok, portions small. The burger our recommendation. In the room there were mosquitos. We killed a few before bed. We were awoken to room full of them, killed well over thirty before falling asleep! Woke covered with bites. Hotel knew of the problem – so why no warning or products to combat it? Breakfast was efficient. Disappointing buffet, no fruit salad, loaf with slow toaster, no pastries. Bizarre deep cereal jars with spoons rather than ladles, impossibly daft! The cooked breakfasts were to order & of high quality, but the portions were small. Checkout smooth. Still love this Hotel, want to help improve things so it’s 4/5 (otherwise it's a 3/5 on the day).

A stopover when walking The Solent Way

Unique setting and an ideal stopping point when walking the Solent Way. However we felt it was over priced for the quality of the room. A pleasant enough room but the bed was worn sloping from the centre to both sides and the toilet flush didn’t work effectively and there was no toilet brush. All staff were delightful friendly and helpful. The food in the pub was good and the service excellent.

Beautiful location, disappointing room

I wouldn’t recommend room 31. It’s up 2.flights of shallow stairs. You need small feet. No proper shower, only a hand shower. Water pressure very low - it took ages to get a small amount of water in the bath. I was not offered venison at dinner but overheard other guests being offered it. Only 4 choices of main courses. Breakfast good but no croissants as on visit a couple of weeks ago.

The hotel was lovely and in a wonderful setting, but we paid extra for a room that was a bit tired in all honesty. The bathroom in particular needed modernising.

We also booked a table at Henry’s Pub and although the staff were attentive and polite, and cannot be faulted, the menu was disappointing, the “specials” had one extra option which was half a chicken. A specials board usually has more options really. We ordered 3 courses, and two meals were sent back as they were luke warm. One meal included salad, which was a couple of lettuce leaves and little else. No veg with the pork meal. They offered to take money off the bill but in truth, we can see why the pub wasn’t packed, which on a lovely summers evening, it should be. It needs an overhaul. Walking through the hotel and grounds was lovely though. A few changes could make the stay outstanding.

Stayed for one night. We had to ask to change our room due to it being right up in the top of the building. It was up some really steep narrow stairs which I found difficult with walking problems. We also found it very claustrophobic. However reception were wonderful and immediately moved us to a different room which much better. We ate dinner in Henry’s Bar which was fine and breakfast in Riverview. The hot food was good but cups and plates etc weren’t very clean. We also found the continental area a bit messy. The toaster was very temperamental not just with us, everyone that was using it had problems.
Overall we had a good stay, the staff were great but felt the hotel lacked attention to detail.

Family Stay

Stay good, food good, helpful staff. Amazing views. Staff should sweep floor between evening meals an breakfast. I had to ask them to v cub Lear napkins, a selection of chips etc from underneath my breakfast table. Also when I pay £239 for a family room, I would expect more than a z-bed for my daughter and I would not have hit that unless I asked,

Nice building.
Young staff that try hard and are pleasant.
Older brunette lady at checkin is the rudest person I’ve ever come across in the service industry. Unfathomably unhelpful and unpleasant.

Piles of dirty bowls at breakfast, bits of dried food stuck to bowl after bowl… same with mugs and cutlery and glasses. Dirtiest crockery/cutlery have ever come across in any restaurant or hotel!

Also, th included breakfast is cold yoghurt/bread/cereal only. You have to pay an extra 12-18 for pancakes or bacon/eggs/etc.

Nice location, that’s the only things going for it. You’d get better service and less dirt going to a motel.

A beautiful property on the river so you can sit outside and view the boats and hear the wind in the trees and birds; so tranquil and picturesque.

Staff were friendly and welcoming, we had our baby son with us and they accommodated room service (top floor) from the restaurant and knocked quietly so as not to wake him. So thoughtful. Our room (a chic room) was spacious - which we needed for his cot - and had views over the historic buildings and river. The room was clean - no shower but the building is old so probably couldn't be fitted in; if that's a deal-breaker it may be worth checking if your room has one. It worked better to have a bath for us with a little one.
The bed was big and comfy. TV, wifi and tea/ coffee (pod machine), fresh milk and a G&T in the room. Lovely.

At breakfast there was a table with a high chair already set up for us; great service. We were told our son could make as much mess and not to worry; we'd never leave it in a mess but it was a nice touch to be reassured. The service was warm and good, a change to a dish easily accommodated, food was delicious.

Check-out was friendly as the rest of the stay; feedback was asked for - all positive from us but again, they care.

Only 2 things to comment on:

There are free (7kw) pod point chargers for customers that currently don't show on the app; big plus.

There's an issue with calling in at the moment, had to call a few times to book breakfast time but very minor issue.

Food not if there’s a wedding !!

If there is a wedding at the hotel
It provides no facilities for its guests , that is no food at lunchtime or afternoon snacks
There is a facility for an evening meal in a plain room without windows
The hotel needs to make some arrangements for this situation as it is certainly not at the budget rand of the range

Our first contact with the hotel was unfriendly and disappointing. We were 3 minutes early for the 3pm check in and we were told to go away. Not in a friendly way. When we came back the two staff were not welcoming. We felt like an inconvenience for just checking in. The next couple to check in were treated in the same manner. The setting is superb. The hotel lovely. The room comfortable and clean. Getting a drink at the bar and the service in the restaurant showed more poor customer focused staff. The bar man had no other customers but it took us a while to get his attention and get served. The service reluctant. In the restaurant the staff were squabbling with each other openly in front of their customers. When they weren't working the tables they were lolling about in the restaurant reception as if it were a social club. This hotel really has potential. But the staff let it down. Hopefully this and other reviews I have read since visiting will give the management a prod to polish up their service. Don't let this review put you off visiting. It really is a splendid spot.

Beautiful place to stay. Great location. Lovely staff but restaurant suffering at moment through lack of and getting sufficient staff. Room comfortable but average for price. Heated towel rail directly beside toilet and a tight squeeze. Could be considered a hazard.

Very nice - but pricey

Lovely quiet/remote location, with waterside views from the bar terrace. Room small, but comfortable - with nice extras such as nespresso machine. Poor beer selection, but good wines. Food expensive and limited menu, nothing special for the price. Strong Covid compliance throughout.

The hotel was beautiful and the room was very clean aswell as the whole hotel reception were helpful and informative but it was the time system on breakfast and evening meal ,you would have your time slot which is fine ,what with what is going on but when you are sat at your table for almost 40 mins waiting for tea and coffee then another 20 mins till you get breakfast but in between that other customers come in and are served before you with everything it seemed as though the longer you stayed the more you had to wait first morning we were treated like royalty then it just went down hill all the waiters and watresses didnt look very happy to be there to be honest

Very attractive property in beautiful and unusual surroundings. The evening meal and breakfast were excellent if a little pricey.
The staff appeared relatively new although very attentive and their service was good.
For the character of the hotel, the lighting in the dining area and lounge was a little functional and lacking in warmth. The beautiful fire in the lounge was lit late in the evening and only at the request of another guest.

Great dog friendly stay

We chose their dog friendly package with our mental cockapoo. It was great and we were able to relax despite her still being a semi-trained pup. Though still very comfortable our dog friendly room understandably wasn't going to one of their plushest, but it was straight in off one of the gardens, ground floor, and among other like minded guests so ideal.

A tranquil & romantic stay in a beautiful setting.

We had a two night stay. I just love the historical setting and how relaxing our stay was. The hotel is situated right by the river and it was a super quiet environment. We stayed in a beautiful old room, full of character but do be aware that there is also a newly built section where the rooms are nice and modern but lack the character of the old house; we asked to be moved so we could soak up the history. The food in the restaurant is a little expensive but it was gorgeous and the service was impeccable. However, there is also a pub attached so there was a cheaper yet tasty option for our second night. I would stay again and hope to take advantage of the cycling trail and canoeing.

The rooms were beautifully decorated, hotel was in a stunning location and it was very quiet. Downside was we booked two rooms but were given 5 & 10 which were on different floors. When asked to change the receptionist was very rude but did give us room 13 to go with 10. Staff at the bar and at breakfast were very attentive.

The location is fantastic, a real joy, with the grassy slope down to the river, the boats, and the historical buildings in the area. It's also easy to get into the heart of the New Forest. I felt the quality of the service let them down. By that I mean the attentiveness and attention to detail you would hope for from a place billed as boutique in a special location.

10th anniversary

Stayed in this wonderful hotel as part of our 10th anniversary. The building itself is wonderful and in such a beautiful and quiet location, on the estuary. The staff were polite, friendly and accommodating. The room was wonderful (Victorious indeed)! We particularly enjoyed eating our delicious breakfast on the veranda and our early evening drinks in the garden. My only minor complaint would be the door to the veranda slammed shut, which shook the building and was heard and felt in our room.
