Worst stay
To be honest it was the worst stay I had at a hostel to date. There was hardly a beach view but that hardly matter anymore when I could barely get any sleep both nights I stayed there. The worst part is that the room was facing a club just outside our window, so the noise was constant from late evening to around 4 am. To add to it, I could see the window in our room had an area where it had been smashed and taped together, so there was virtually no noise proofing. The room we were in was also the last one on the floor and the wi-fi barely reached us with the exception one corner.

First up the Hotel staff are great, friendly helpful and always cheerful. Second the Hotel is in a great location, minutes from beach, pier or town. The hotel was once a very grand building and keeping these buildings maintained are a nightmare and expensive so will never match the standards of a modern build hotel in terms of noise etc so the hotel could be described as tired on the inside. the room was large but limited storage space, but it was clean, tidy with fresh linen and towels. bathroom was nice -good shower and bath. there was no tea/coffee facilities in the room but you could buy beverages at the bar. there was a good feel about the hotel . Overall it would not take much to improve the experience- clean the bedroom windows as i am sure there was a view there, if your in the en suite room maybe a kettle, couple of chairs. it was much better then the hostel experience my girlfriend thought she was getting (no negative experiences to report) and again location and staff was everything- i think you get for what you pay in towns like Brighton and this was reflected in this.Would i use again?????....Maybe!

Really welcoming receptionist, our private room was a very decent size and even had a sea view which was brilliant for the affordable price! Our en suite only had a bath and no shower which is really the only negative I can think of (and to some this could be a positive)

Nice hostel, right in front of the pier, even if the building is a bit old. Staff was friendly and helpful. There is also a nice bar.

Ok for somewhere to sleep
The hotel is clean , however the room definitely needs a bit of TLC. There are holes in the walls, Paint chipping off all over the room, windows rotting. The bed was clean, though, so if you are literally looking for a place to sleep, it is ok. As a heavy sleeper who can sleep through noise, I slept fine, however my boyfriend unfortunately couldn't sleep due to needing to keep the window open and the noise outside the hotel in the steeet keeping him up all night, which couldn't be muffled with ear plugs. Have to say the team at reception were really friendly and helpful, which was great.

Brilliant location. The room was large with an en-suite. They provided a large fan as it was very hot when we visited.

A&o's chief assets are location, location and location. Their primary business seems to be running a youth hostel for busloads of youngsters. The youngsters can block access to breakfast and run rampant through the lounge. My top floor room had a large, uncomfortable bed but no furniture (until I asked for a chair). The motion sensor in the bathroom, supposed to save energy, kept the light on when the door was open but turned it off while I showered.

The room was big but no facilities in the room usually you have a kettle also some tea bags and coffee.Also we didn't know it was a hostel and each night the kids would be out shouting, screaming until 3.30am so we didnt get much sleep at all.

A grand old building, very central, right close to the sea front. A hotel room with a window like this onto the park would cost a bomb.
I made the mistake of booking a hotel based on the map and the price. This isn't a hotel, and doesn't pretend to be a hotel. It is very much a hostel. Don't have a lot of recent hostel experience, but to me it looked a very good hostel. But of course pretty weird for a hotel.
They didn't have my booked room, so offered me this alternative, adding as an incentive to accept it that they would not put anyone else with me in the room. Never had that offered as a hotel feature before, but sure.
It was certainly very clean, but took some work to find lights that would work (had to plug the beds in, some worked, some didn't).
Can't beat the location, except if you are with a car. Brighton hates cars, and hates people with cars, and hates visitors with cars. Closest respectable parking was 15 minute walk away, and more expensive than Heathrow or downtown NYC. A decent walk from the station, but obviously not a problem for most hostel users.
Would I send my kids there with ten of their closest friends? Absolutely. (Though not sure I'd recommend Brighton for anyone any more.) Would I stay there again? Probably not.

I booked this hotel simply because of the location to The Lanes. It was perfect, I didm't realise it was a hostel but it didn't matter. The receptionist, Suzie, was incredibly friendly and knowledgeble. We were treated really well, enjoyed the perfect location, it was clean and we slept well. I would stay there again. We were able to leave our lugguage before and after check in and out. Wonderful experience.

Ok, I know it's a hostel. But I've stayed in private rooms in hostels all around the world and this review is in comparison to them. The room was spacious and ok. The bedsheets and pillows had little stains on them which weren't great. The bed was shocking. I could feel the metal frame underneath. The TV reception was intermittent and some of the functions on the remote did not work.
But, I'm well aware that staying in a hostel must b accompanied by elements that are a little rough around the edges, which is why myself and my partner tried to give them the benefit of the doubt.
But the noise from the room above was very loud. We asked the hotel receptionist (who was accommodating) to ask them to be quiet (a group of young boys on a trip), but the noise persisted. And the room window was single glazed and ancient. With a nightclub entrance right outside our window there was no hope of sleep.
So we left at 00:30. Too late to keep complaining as we had to get up early and too tired to keep faith. This is only the second time we have left an establishment because it was so bad, the first time being a place that resembled the subterranean bunker in The Hills Have Eyes. Better photographer than customer services. This place wasn't that bad, but I would never book again.

Mattress was really poor and pillows uncomfortable. Some staff really friendly (check in on Friday), others didn't even acknowledge you were communicating with them (black uniform at desk on Monday check out 11am). When checking in I was told check out was 11am, extended my stay by one night (only as the trains back to London were having issues on Sunday) and was not informed check out was earlier on weekdays, so housekeeping walked directly into my room at 10:30 - not housekeepings fault, I should've been informed of this by front desk when I changed.
The upstairs guests were incredibly loud through the night and it was a real disturbance.

First got there, the man at reception wasn’t the friendliest. Gave us a hostel room when that was not on the booking at all, the room was completely falling apart, extremely dirty pillows and the cleanliness was just awful (photo evidence), could barely sleep due to upstairs people, constantly banging and stomping, we need complain but nothing was done about it. The beds themselves were super uncomfy.

However, it didn’t end well because I didn’t realise that you were supposed to tidy up after yourself and word of my six-days of presidential larging was quickly comported to a young staffer who declared, with an admixture of vengefulness and pity, that I had been summarily put on the banned list. Ironically, this was perhaps the first longer stay premiers where I hadn’t sneaked a ciggie in the bathroom, and yet I was found guilty, perhaps by dint of the ghosts of ashtrays past crying in the air for retribution.
Anyway, it’s a great place, incredible value, lovely people. It’s just that they set a higher moral standard than that which I’m capable of following. And for these reasons, I apologise and wish everyone well.

I have to say, our stay at a&o was 11 out of 10! From location, to staff, from room to coffee/bar from seating areas to views and a short (under 5 minutes) walk to the historic Brighton Palace Pier!

The positive thing about this accommodation is that it is very close to the beach, and the second is the cleanliness of the room. I got a double room which only had one double bed and it was not suitable for two people. And it had a very small window. There was no any fridge. I felt like I was in a prison and I was trying to get out. And because it was located on the main street, it was very crowded and noisy and I couldn't sleep at night.

This is the best place to stay for people with a lower budget. We booked a room with a private bathroom. It’s in the city centre/next to the beach and the pier! The facilities could use some TLC but it’s not that bad. Would definitely come back here again. Thank you!

Never given a hotel 1 star till today. : Understand it's a hostel, but booked a private room would atleast expect towels (£2.50 each to borrow) to be free, never in my life had to pay for them anywhere I stayed before. No basics such as hairdryer, shampoo, soap, kettle/drink facilities ect. Really is the bare minimum you get. For a. 4 star accommodation it doesn't add up.

was a little disappointed to be honest,the bed was comfortable enough,strangely placed right in front of a large window,meaning i had to have the curtains closed,even in daylight,strange too that the tv was positioned behind the head of the bed,meaning i had to stand to view it.i did not have the tv on for long though,as the lack of signal meant having it on was for the most part,a waste of time.there was no kettle in my room,and in the bathroom,i had a bath,but no shower,this strangely,was right in front of the window too.for the £130 i paid for the night,i would've expected towels to be supplied for free,but,no,(good job i brought my own)these were for hire! staff were very nice and helpful,and i slept very well,however,i certainly couldn't describe my stay as value for money,so,therefor,wouldn't be staying here again.

Have stayed here a couple of times previously and it was just as good! Room was huge, tidy, view was excellent and I think it’s great value for money. Located so close to everything too. Staff were kind and service was good.

The staff were very helpful and friendly. The hostel is kept very clean and is not far from places to eat and drink and very close to the centre of Brighton. The double room we stayed in was quite big and the shower always had hot water but the walls and windows were in need of some TLC, however this did not bother us and would definitely use again.

It was really clean and updated. The service was great. I’m an avid pillow monster and would have benefited with 2 pillows rather than the one provided. So in future I would bring my own pillow. Other than that it was a lovely clean stay. The bathroom was clean also.

Cannot fault it one bit. Check in was smooth, reception staff were lovely, and room was perfect. Room was HUGE, we had a fantastic view and the bed was comfy. Will definitely be coming back, great value for money.

We booked a double, private room. We only stayed one night. The room was clean and bright. The curtains could have covered the windows more. There was no towels in the room (found out after we left you had to pay extra for that) TV was a little Iffy too but we wasnt there long. No tea or coffee making facilites in the room.

I chose the YHA because of its cost and location and as a single lady, chose to pay for a double room. I had made a special request which was honoured - thank you! I cannot praise the hostel highly enough. The staff were friendly and helpful and carried my heavy bag upstairs for me. Yes, the room was basic but apart from a kettle and a towel, it had EVERYTHING one could need. I knew from the hostel info that these items were not provided and made arrangements for myself. I paid for the cooked breakfast and it was plentiful and excellent. I urge you to support this place - it is the best deal in the whole of Brighton. Thank you to all staff. If you are reading this, then look NO further, if basic is OK for you, then book right now!

A nice affordable place. We stayed for New Year’s and a convenient access to the beach. Easily accessible food options, clubs, pubs and a theatre. Only cons is that the room is a bit weird with the wall sticker and the paint coming out. The bathroom is renovated and feels much cleaner than the room. You have to pay extra £2 for the towels. Staffs were amazing and very nice. The cafe is nice and the guy who made us tea at night was so nice. Overall, happy with the place and the stay.
