This charming, family-friendly hotel is located within the walls of the Castle of São Jorge, in the heart of the Lisbon historic centre. Guests will find pubs, the bus and underground stations, the Casa dos Bicos historical house within walking distance.

Jerónimos Monastery and Belém Tower are located roughly 5 km from the hotel and the National Museum of Ancient Art is located roughly 3 km away. Lisbon Portela Airport is approximately 9 km from the hotel.

This hotel is a small mansion built within the Castle of São Jorge walls, on the site of the former Alcaçova Palace. The historical building from 1765 comprises 2 floors and a mansard, an inner courtyard with a small garden and some medieval remains such as the cistern.

Fantastic hotel, with very friendly and helpful staff. Henri on reception went beyond the call of duty with his offer to give us a lift in the golf-buggy in the pouring rain. Our room was delightful; comfortable and clean, with a lovely view of the courtyard with its resident peacocks. The endless supply of delicious food and drink at breakfast and cakes and drinks throughout the afternoon and evening was a great source of pleasure to come back to. We would definitely recommend the hotel to others.

The rooms and the public areas lived up to my expectations of a heritage hotel. But the bathroom in our room on the top floor has seen its better time and does need touching up. Besides, we noticed a puddle of water on the bathroom floor every time we showered. We were sure the shower door was closed. So apparently there are plumbing issues that need to be addressed. The towels we placed on the bathroom floor were soaking wet every time after we showered. It was not only annoying but downright hazardous.

Hotel location was quite inconvenient to get to as it was a steep hike up a cobbled stone pathway each time, so not ideal for end of the day after you’ve already done a whole day of sightseeing. The hotel staff were nice overall but some could be friendlier and show more enthusiasm. It also would’ve been nice if they offered free entry to the nearby castle, seeing as it’s the only hotel right beside it. The hotel itself was small but charming, with the facilities being quite outdated but adding to the charm of the historical place. Breakfast had a small but satisfying variety of healthy and both sweet and savory options which I appreciated. I also loved the complimentary flask of porto wine which was waiting for us in our room upon check in and seeing the beautiful peacocks stroll around the hotel from our window / during breakfast.

What’s not to love? This wonderful hotel is inside the castle walls! The service we received from the moment we arrived was excellent. We were offered the breakfast upon arrival and our bags were waiting in our room once we returned from a full day of sightseeing. My only regret is not booking another night. Only a taxi can provide door to door service, so if you have heavy luggage, arrange for their efficient pick up or get a taxi. It’s a steep climb up! Highly recommend!

We booked this based on the pictures and reviews and were not disappointed. We arrived before check in time so they took our luggage while we went on a tour. When we returned, they brought our luggage to our room and booked a Fado Restaurant for us for the following evening. The next morning after having a wonderful breakfast( included in our stay) I found out the shower didn't work. We reported it to the front desk and left for a tour. It was fixed when we returned. The hotel is right next to the Castle of St. George on the top of one of the hills. To get to our tours we had to walk down to the city squares, going back was a little bit harder. There is a bus that stops near the hotel , but we chose to walk.. We enjoy staying in small hotels like this with lots of character and it didn't disappoint.

What are unique facility. Next to or within a castle. The roads going to it are cobblestone. Winding roads and it takes multiple left and right turns to get to it.

Located in central Lisbon. Access to areas of interest was easy.

The staff was excellent. There was a billing mistake made. They went the extra mile to correct it. I would’ve never even known that it existed. If you wanted a taxi at 3:30 in the morning, they had a taxi there at 3:30 ready to take you.

The bar that they had was fairly well stocked. You used it on the honor system. What place has that kind of policy?

We could not have asked for a better experience.

We loved our stay at Solar do Castelo - it felt like stepping into a quiet piece of Lisbon's history. The staff went above and beyond - friendly, welcoming, and always ready with great recommendations for exploring. Breakfast in the courtyard was a highlight - peaceful,delicious, and the perfect way to start the day.

This is the most magical place to stay! The location is connected to San Jorge Castle - once it was the kitchen for the castle! The tile work, bright color, peacocks, courtyard…everything was perfection. The staff is so warm and friendly. They are there for whatever you might need.

This amazing hotel is a former wing of the actual castle! The staff were lovely and very helpful, the breakfast and the lounge area/treats were awesome, and it's in a great spot! Expect to walk if you stay here, it's easy enough to get to but all up hill. We loved the location and history here

Let me just start off by saying that this was a truly special stay. Staff absolutely wonderful, property is spectacular and it's truly a romantic type of vibe - besides, how often do you get to say you stayed in a castle or that you got to eat breakfast with Peacocks? That being said, please be advised that the property is all the way on the top of the castle grounds and is not accessible by uber. If you want to walk, get ready to get your steps in - 'it's all uphill from here' became our tag line when we were returning to the hotel each night after dinner or drinks. I would not recommend this property to anyone requiring special disability services unless you plan to take an official taxi every time you need to leave or return to the property. Staff will happily help you with ordering a cab but it does add up. All in all, we would definitely stay there again - it's really got that special something and all of the staff were truly wonderful. 10/10 for being such a unique experience and truly living up to it's expectations!

Beautiful, unique property at the top of Alfama right next to the Castelo de Sao Jorge. Wonderful staff - kind and attentive and gorgeous property. We had the Petite room which didn't have a view but it was cozy and enough space. We especially loved the courtyard and the complimentary sparkling wine. A great place to unwind with the peacocks at the end of the day. Highly recommend not driving there there (only taxis and tour operators can get there) but the hotel provides an excellent service to pick you up. Recommended!

A beautiful, unique and character-filled hotel. The bed and bedding were so comfortable, the room (while small) is wonderful and breezy, quiet and exactly right. Staff were unassuming and helpful, and very friendly. The courtyard is a wonderful spot for a morning coffee, cool plunge in the pool, and relaxation with a good book; in the evening, we loved the sparkling wine made available to guests. It was romantic and softly-lit with lanterns, candles, and the firepit. It is everything a boutique hotel should be.

If we could come back tomorrow, we would.

PS - Loved the peacocks. They just added to the charm. :o)

Beautiful and unique hotel in an area just outside the castle—-so lots of tourists. Once inside it is very beautiful with wandering peacocks that you hear throughout your stay.
There was some confusion and wait when we needed to be picked up and also the taxi was 30 minutes early to go to the airport which we had to pay for.
Maybe a better understanding and presence of universal travel at the front desk. The service was very hit and miss and not helpful with restaurants, etc.

It is located adjacent to the castle so convenient to the old part of town. They gave excellent food recommendations and arranged reservations. Breakfast was divine! Varied, healthy and delicious. The one tiny drawback was the noise of the beautiful peacocks and hens nearby. They were wonderful to see but I think we were there during mating season. Luckily, the hotel offered earplugs if needed. But it would be something to consider if you are a light sleeper.Otherwise, I cannot fault this wonderful hotel. We can't wait to return.

Lovely stay

Our stay at was fantastic! The staff were friendly, room was very clean, and decor thoughtfully curated. It is located in a quiet neighborhood of Alfama so it is lovely at the end of a long day. Ubers or taxis are not able to pick you up directly at the hotel so keep in mind it is a 7 minute walk to pickup point.

Loved everything about this place. Staff was great and the breakfast was above average. No refrigerator in the room, but just asked for ice and the staff filled a bucket. The peacocks were not that loud. Had a great time. Thanks Henri and staff.

The hotel is delightful and full of charm. Unfortunately when we arrived they were doing renovations and using toxic chemicals with poor ventilation. I know renovations have to be done but not to warn guests and to be quite grumpy when the issue is pointed out is poor performance. That said they very quickly arranged for us to stay at their sister hotel where we had an excellent stay. I'm sure in peak season the place is beautiful.

Fabulous hotel in the heart of the old town - next to the castle walls. Pick up from the airport was seamless and very quick to the hotel up some very narrow streets (if you are taking a cab make sure they can get inside the city walls) We arrived before check in and were offered breakfast at no extra charge and left our bags with reception. We we told we could check in at 1.00pm and so returned to get in straight away with bags in the room already. We had a complementary bottle of local sparkling wine in an ice bucket which was delicious.
The room was spacious (no3 - Alfama room) with views to the side and back courtyard. The room was comfortable with all the amenities you would expect.
Good plentiful breakfast with lots of options to choose from. An honesty bar for a late drink in the lounge / terrace which was very welcome.
A brilliant hotel in the heart of the old town with great service and some lovely extra touches which made for a memorable stay.

The property itself is very nice. Just know that it’s located and the residential section which is the oldest part of the city so cobblestone streets, which can be confusing at night if you’re trying to get back to the hotel.

The property is beautiful, and the staff is wonderful and gracious. Our room was clean and comfortable, but a bit small (we had nowhere to comfortably put our full size luggage) - just a note if you are a heavy packer like us, you may need to upgrade to a larger room! We loved the peacocks and the courtyard! We had some issues with taxis not being willing to go all the way to the hotel, so they would drop us off at the bottom of the hills and we would need to walk the rest of the way. This was NOT a hotel issue, but if you are unable to walk up the steep hills it may be a problem.

I don't typically leave reviews but we really had an outstanding experience at this hotel so I felt compelled to share! To start, you should know that the \"free airport transportation\" is for the journey TO the hotel only (which is not made clear in the Expedia listing). We originally wanted transportation to the airport after our stay, but there is very good reason to accept their transportation TO the hotel. It is within the castle walls where vehicles (except residents and taxis) are not allowed. The streets are VERY narrow and it's at the top of the hill, so you don't want to have to walk! Our taxi driver was very reluctant to take us there, so their shuttle service would have been helpful. I would definitely recommend accepting their transportation to the hotel. Aside from that, the area is VERY busy with tourists and crowds, however the minute you step through the hotel doors you will find instant calm and quiet! It is a really tranquil spot in the middle of a really busy area! If you want to be close to all of the major sights, but not feel like you're staying in a tourist trap, this is the place to be! The staff was incredible. We asked them for a dinner recommendation and they not only gave us a great suggestion but they made a reservation for us. The Fado restaurant they suggested ended up being the highlight of our two week travels and by far the best meal we had! I can't recommend Solar Do Castelo highly enough!
