Upon entering the room, it was clear that the floors were dirty. The kind of dirty that forces you to wear shoes whenever you weren’t in bed. We presented our concerns to the front desk and they were apologetic and scheduled a “Full Service” cleaning for that day. We also asked for two additional towels as there were only two in the room. We were instructed to find one of the cleaning staff and ask them for more towels. Off to the beach we went for the day and when we returned, NOTHING had been done. Bed was not made, nothing in the bathroom appeared to have been cleaned and the floor hadn’t been touched. AGAIN, we brought this to their attention. 5 minutes later, the young lady working the front desk, NOT a member of the cleaning crew, shows up with a broom to sweep (not mop) the floors. Then, realizing that only one roll of toilet paper was left in the room, I again made a trip to the front desk asking for an additional roll and AGAIN, I was told to find a member of the cleaning staff to ask for an additional roll. Why am I the one having to hunt this stuff down? Now listen, my gal and I are not some bougie cosmopolitans that violently recoil at the sign of dust, a dirty remote control or a skid mark in the toilet. If they had advertised that basic amenities were in fact “self-serve” at least we would’ve been prepared and could’ve made our decision to stay there with that in mind. All this and I still haven’t mentioned the broken bed that I fell out of. Yep, true story.

Unfortunately, the room itself was very disappointing. The bedding had multiple holes, and the bath towels also had holes, which made the room feel poorly maintained. The motel is located right next to the train tracks, and trains ran throughout the night, making it very difficult to get any sleep.

The only positive about this motel is the location. It’s within walking distance of the beach, restaurants, and shops, which is why we booked it.

For the price we paid, I expected much better quality and upkeep. While the location is convenient, I would not stay here again.

Very old property with hardly any updates. Linens were awful. What were supposed to be white pillow cases had stains all over them and were yellowish/brown. Blankets on beds had burn marks in them. White towels were the same, no longer white and appeared very old. Was surprised they still used any of the linens as all NEED to be replaced. Beds were in very old rusty frames that made loud noises with ANY movement. They give you one blank card for the room and hand you a remote with no back and tapped in batteries. No amenities and no breakfast.

Only plus is location. Close to both Carlsbad Village and the beach.

Can not reccomend.

Very dirty and stinky room. Looks like walls and doors in restroom never been cleaned or painted. Room was very stinky. This kind of amenity should not cost more then $50 per night. I paid $160!!! Don’t save on this one. For $40 more you can book a way nicer room in that town and they will have breakfast included. This one didn’t even have bad coffee.

Stay was just ok. Just a very dated property with no sound insulation. Staff was great, very helpful. Internet was too slow for me to work from my room. Bedding had stains and holes in the sheets and comforter. TV worked but had a large dead line in the middle. If price is your main factor then the room works just fine.

Scandia is a great place. The people who run it are fun and nice! I always sleep well on the mattress there and I have a spine issue which is saying a lot.
The location offers easy access to the village, neighboring Oceanside and the freeways about 2 miles away. The venue is next to a preparatory school which has a lovely campus with old trees. It is bookended on the North side by the enchanting Buena Vista lagoon. There are walking paths everywhere so if you decide to forego driving to a restaurant or what have you, you can enjoy a stroll.
The housekeeping staff is wonderful, timely and always there during their shift to assist.
The Amtrak or an occasional freight train passes at the backside of the property but unless you are hyper-sensitive to the sound of a train, it really is quick and actually adds to the ambiance of the village atmosphere.
I love the shutters on the windows so you can adjust the light and breeze coming in. The ac/heater works like a charm so you can be cozy.
The traffic that goes by at the front of the property consists of slow residential speed vehicles well-regulated by a traffic circle at the North end.
The area is very very safe and walking at night is great and relaxing. There is every type of cuisine from Indian to Mexican and Italian a block away and many ice cream/dessert cafes.
I love Scandia and I always return, as I am currently caring for my mother. ‘Tis fun to get to know the staff, some of the nice guests and daily birds!:)

Scandia is a good place. The room is very comfortable and the people who run it are nice. The parking is good; you can be very close to your room. The location is pleasant, close to everything with lots of choices of things to do around you in Carlsbad Village or neighboring Oceanside. There is an occasional freight train or Amtrack that goes by but it adds to the charm of the village. There is a historic prep school, Army Navy Academy that has a beautiful campus with lots of old trees. The campus is right next door on the south end and Scandia has the Buena Vista lagoon on the north end. Across the street are residential properties so the hotel is just outside the commercial zone and quiet. There is a traffic circle on the north end so passersby don’t drive fast and there is hardly any vehicle noise. The room has a cozy feel with a spacious shower and nice sink area. The heater is also wonderful. It’s nice to read at night with the ocean air coming through the window. Also there are nice window shutters. The housekeeping staff is great and you can find so many places to explore and walk. I also enjoy the little birds that fly around the property!:). As with any well-run property, if you follow the rules, are polite and courteous to other guests you will have a great stay at Scandia!

Scandia is a great property. The people who run it are very nice and get to know you. I have enjoyed my time here. There is easy access to everything; close to Carlsbad Village, the neighboring city of Oceanside, beaches, parks. What is really nice: it is off the main road but there is never heavy traffic. A car goes by here and there but since it is a quiet village, you don’t hear the noise of cars. There is an occasional Amtrack or freight train that goes by but it is brief and charming like quaint background music. For me it adds to the village/beach feel. The housekeeping ladies are wonderful, helpful and friendly. Restaurants are plentiful in both adjacent cities (Carlsbad and Oceanside) and there are fun local boutiques, independent coffee shops as well as a larger shopping mall about 6 minutes away. For theatre enthusiasts there is New Village Arts Theatre in the heart of Carlsbad Village known for its quality productions. There are refrigerators and microwave in the rooms, comfortable bed and spacious shower. People traveling through are from all over the US, visitors driving up the coast, etc.. Like any well-run place, there is an expectation to be courteous to other guests adjacent to you. If you follow the rules of the property you will have a pleasant stay at Scandia. What’s fun is you can take a leisurely stroll into the village past giant old eucalyptus and pine trees in the evening and walk back to your room for some fresh air and exercise!:)

It took me a while to submit this review because this used to be my favorite motel get away.

ROACHES in the refrigerator blew it for me. I noticed them the second day in the morning. I bought roach spray, sprayed and waited 4 hours for the room to air out. They were back as soon as I started preparing my dinner. I let the manager know and she offered my roach spray.

Turns out they were living in the refrigerator door. I let then know on my way out. I had no choice but to start the full 3 days in that room because I couldn't get a refund.

When I showed the manager the video of the roaches in the refrigerator door he said "Yeah, yeah, just give us a good review and I'll take care of that".

I finally decided to submit this review because no one should rent a room and have to deal with roaches.

So, if you book with The Scandia Motel, take a can a Raid just in case.

On top of that a passion in the room 2 doors down walked in and out about 15 times an hour. So, it wasn't even quiet and peaceful like usual. I noticed a not change in clientele.

Bedspreads had holes in them, and I ran out of toilet paper in 2 days--no other roll was provided. Clearly that wasn't checked when they came to clean the bathroom (though it was obviously running low when I check in). Staff was super duper nice though!

Stayed here this weekend. Overall it was ok but I would not recommend if you aren’t comfortable with an unclean environment. Me and my partner didn’t stay in the room other than to sleep so we dealt with it, but I probably wouldn’t recommend if you plan on spending a lot of time there. One of the towels they provided had a bunch of black spots all over it and when I brought it up to the front desk they seemed annoyed that I was requesting a new one and wouldn’t even grab it with their own hands. The comforters had multiple holes on it, and the surfaces didn’t seem to be properly wiped down as there was sticky residue on the table and dirty/dusty surfaces. Obviously I went into this stay knowing it wasn’t going to be the nicest place for a last minute stay that’s walking distance to the beach, but for $150 a night I thought it would be slightly better. Overall, I’d say only stay here if you are comfortable with a little grime lol. The shower and faucet worked great!

I specifically asked if the room was going to be noisy the woman at desk assured me that it would not be noisy. The room was supposed to be a non smoking room but the cigarette smell was so prominent that I had a headache and couldn’t sleep. So between the cigarette smell and the noise from the street, I give this hotel 1 star.
I know that it has a 2 star rating but that should not justify being lied to.

So I really love this property as it is very close to both the beach and Carlsbad Village. Scandia Motel is cute but could use some upgrades and a thorough cleaning. I have stayed here twice (due to location and price) however it needs to be painted and cleaned. The floors are filthy (do not go barefoot) and the shower was not clean at all and had long hairs all over the place. That said, the.price is right, the location is excellent, and the family who runs it is very nice and welcoming. I will stay here every time I come.to Carlsbad.

I like Scandia; peaceful place. If you are a respectful guest and follow the rules of the property you will have a good stay. Be mindful of noise and remember others paid to be at the motel too. The management is kind and appreciates good guests. Scandia gives you the best of 2 areas. Located on the Northern tip of Carlsbad Village, it is surrounded by parks, a private school (historic Army/Navy Academy, love their chimes at night!) and the Buena Vista lagoon (first ecological reserve in Ca.). The moon over the lagoon at night is mesmerizing and beautiful. Lots of birds. The train runs at the back of the motel but it just becomes background with an occasional slow freight train or a quick Amtrak going by, not noisy. It’s the best of Carlsbad and neighboring Oceanside as it is on the border. Oceanside has a booming restaurant scene emerging with an interesting vast array of cuisine choices. Oceanside is a little more funky and Carlsbad has history and architecture. You can walk into Oceanside from Scandia as the area is pedestrian-friendly. The surrounding eucalyptus/pine trees are very old and tell their own story of the area. The room is cozy, has all you need. Free parking near your room, microwave, fridge, heater/fan, nice bathroom/shower. Place is very well run and organized. Good housekeeping staff! You can walk a few minutes to the sand and waves. I have all good things to say of Scandia. Well-lit and security cameras, safe for the solo traveller.

Recently remodeled, walking distance to the beach, downtown and free on-site parking, but the rest- not so good! The room was not clean - hair balls and dust everywhere, makeup stains and cheap perfume smell. The kitchenette sink was filthy. Rotting fruit had been left in the (new) refrigerator. No coffee within three blocks. Full kitchen but no utensils, pots, or plates. No iron to press clothes. TV didn't work. Shower head spraying water all over the wall. Luggage had to be hauled up the 16 steps to the room. Housekeeping didn't show up for three days and they didn't or couldn't drag a vacuum cleaner up the steps. Fruit flies and what I suspect were bedbugs in the room. I'm not too picky about a motel room, but this place was a hot mess.

The stay was disappointing overall due to basic cleanliness and preparation issues. The room appeared unfinished, with areas that clearly needed fresh paint, which made the space feel neglected rather than maintained. Upon arrival, there were not enough towels provided for two guests, which is a simple detail that should be standard.
More concerning was the lack of proper cleaning. There was leftover trash from previous guests found behind the mattress, which raises questions about how thoroughly the room is cleaned between stays. That’s not something guests should have to deal with.

Scandia is quiet, you can walk wherever you wish, to the lagoon, beach, the village.
The people who run Scandia are awesome! My mother has been in the hospital and I drive everyday to La Jolla to visit her. This place has been a blessing. When I return every day I can grab a delicious sandwich at the local health food store up the street, take a walk to the parks. There is historic Victorian McGee park across the road or another one behind the motel on the next street. Being an only-child helping my mother, Scandia has been a sanctuary for me after a day of responsibility. Walk the Buena Vista lagoon trail up the street (California’s first ecological preserve) or there are fun vintage and thrift stores about 5 blocks North alongside boutique coffee roasters. I am vegetarian, found a restaurant, The Plot, up the street on Pacific Coast Hwy, makes everything from scratch and grows their own vegetables/herbs on their onsite garden. If you want ice cream, there is Handel’s (an institution here) or authentic Italian gelato family-run in the village. Tons of Mexican food (Fidel’s is great 40 years running!). At Scandia you are surrounded by beach, palms and next to the historic Army/Navy Academy (prep school) where lovely bell tower chimes sing at night. The trees on the premises next door, at least 75 years old, eucalyptus/pine, stunning. Love Scandia. Generous refrigerator/microwave, housekeeping ladies are so kind! Wonderful! Salt air + wood scent nightly! Ah!!

It was disgustingly dirty! The shower curtain had a big brown stain, the floor was dirty, the toilet paper holder was completely rusted, no fitted sheet, a flat sheet on the bottom of a stained mattress pad. It was gross and icky.

The site says you can check in until 12 midnight but I received a call from the property the day of my arrival and they insisted I check in earlier.

If I had time to figure out how to get my money back - I would. It was GROSS!!!

The beds were noisy as the box springs were audible from outside. The blanket had what may have been cigarette burns. All towels and bed sheets looked like it had been used to detail a Mac truck engine. We can hear the adjacent room guest breathing.

The people who run the Scandia are very nice. It is quiet and comfortable and the housekeeping ladies are wonderful. It is in a unique location that feels special. You hear the chimes of the Army/Navy Academy and an occasional freight train. If you are respectful of your neighbors and the property you will have a peaceful stay at Scandia. You can walk to the pretty parks nearby or to the Farmer’s Market on Wednesday in the Downtown. For me, I love the serenity here and it is fun to meet and talk to other nice people staying here. The shower is spacious and nice and I love the decent-sized refrigerator. The room has everything you need and I have slept very well here. The parking is also very nice close to your room. I have been very happy here. My mother is getting a lung transplant which is stressful but the people here and sense of community this motel projects has made it a lot lighter for me. At the end of the day driving to and from Scripps La Jolla I look forward to coming back to Scandia to relax, open the windows and enjoy fresh ocean air and a plush comfortable room. This has been one of the most memorable places I’ve ever stayed simply because of the staff and that it is not your typical motel. It has charm.

There's bugs in bed n on floors/ bathroom. Bedding was not clean looked like some one did nasty on them& they just made the bed up [did not see until i unmade the bed in front of the lady who works there], lots of hair on sheets. Ect. Showed the lady & asked for my money back. They refused to refund my money & i just checked in. This place is so nasty & dirty. Do not recommend to anyone. Staff are rude & don't care they laugh in your face. Lost all that money. They refused to give me a receipt. They charged my card fast to take my money. This place is a health hazard.

Good location. Small room close walk to town. TV requires programming authorization with front desk. You heard that right. They issue the control along with your room key card. Since so many small rooms and thin walls they fixed the volume to #5 blamed it on Direct TV but once I insisted a check the clerk took 90 minutes and with attitude had to manually increased the volume, as I complained I’m 70 and hard of hearing. Nancy was nice. The other guy in front office (Jay-C, not sure of the spelling) he really needs to work on his attitude and customer service attributes... We stayed there 2 times before but... this time was just terrible. Initial room was beyond terrible. 2nd room, better but next day after check-in noticed a couple of dirty towels, the TV remote was falling apart and you can't turn on/off the TVs unless you go to the TV and press the button (we're in 2026, not 1980s! Don't be that cheap!)
Also, the only sink in the room wouldn't drain and the microwave, on the inside, was rusted and warped/damaged. I went to the front desk to let them know, very politely, and JayC started raising his voice and arguing with me saying that I'm looking for "problems" and "what do I want him to do?". Just an absolute ridiculously trashy attitude. I told him we'll go somewhere else and I want the rest of our stay refunded. As we were inconvenienced with this during our vacation, packing our belongings, Nancy came and offered to move us from room 20 to room 17, which was nicer, the sink wasn't clogged (as JayC lied to my face saying that all sinks in that building drain extremely slow- again. BLATANT LIE!) and the microwave was acceptable. He also said that room wouldn't be available when it was obviously!
Anyways, they charge you $100 as a security deposit which you'll get back at checkout. Bring cash because if you put it on a card you'll get back ninety something dollars, another scammy tactic

I showed up at 2pm and they wanted $20 extra to check in. Then I had to air the room out for over an hour to get rid of disinfectant smell even though It didn't look clean. Then I really learned my lesson that night when there was no heat and no blankets so I basically froze all night and had to sleep in all of my clothes.

Room was clean, small kitchenette, fridge, microwave. Comfortable, and amazing location. You can walk to all the best parts of Carlsbad village. Room was freezing though , had ac for hotter days but only a small space heater for cold times

Being a prior guest I asked for a flat sheet to put over the comforter on top of the bed and was told that they don't have a key to the laundry room when they're the owners of the hotel that pissed me off given I've stayed there before and late nice tips so I'll take my business elsewhere

Roaches on the floor. Vomit under an end table. Tv remote didn’t work and when I approached the front desk, was asked “why didn’t you bring this up earlier. When did you check in?” Expedia would not refund, so stayed through the night but left at sunrise the next morning. Worst hotel experience of my life.

Always helpful staff and improvements not always are improvements; my room had LED ceiling light and none at bedside or desk side made room lighting terrible! And remove door to bathroom and replace with curtain. What a pain the butt door configuration. Otherwise, great location, clean grounds and room!

Actually, the “kitchenettes” — that available in some of the rooms — could be described as a limited “food prep” area, with nothing other than a counter, a “mini-microwave oven,” a smaller cubic sized “mini-refrig/freezer. For cleanup, your bathroom sink will have to do “double duty,” of handling your assorted cookware, yet also your personal ablutions!

Bottomline, I’d suggest an “extended stay” property if, you’re even slightly serious about “exercising your inner-Chef!

Tv remote was disgustingly cruddy and broke as was the TV. No electricity in the vanity area and bathroom therefore no hairdryer and no lighting in either the toilet/shower or sink. Bed covers were not adequately cleaned and the occupants next door had a dog that barked incessantly - whose owners bounced a ball against the wall most of the night for the dog’s entertainment. I recommend earplugs and a flashlight and maybe some pepper spray.
