We stayed in the presidential suite for almost a week prior to Xmas. The room was absolutely wonderful and huge and the bed was very comfortable. We even had an xmas tree in our room! The rest of the facilities were good as well. The location is perfect and you can basically walk anywhere in Leiden from here. In a couple of minutes you're in downtown. Surroundings are still peaceful.

The only thing that was not as advertised is that for our entire stay we had a baby in the room above us. Given that it is an old wood frame building, there is some noise. The website of the hotel says adults only, but this clearly wasnt the case. Outreach to the hotel went unanswered..

Good experience overall, however I somehow overlooked the preparation for self-checkin. That was a bit worrisome when we arrived early but it was sorted out and we gained access within a few minutes. The room was charming and unique!

The room was great! Really warm, awesome bed and bathroom. The reason for the lower scores was breakfast; breakfast is brought in on a tray from an external supplier. The first day was ok, although it’s obvious the tray had sat for a while. When we went to breakfast we found the room was locked and the delivery guy standing outside in the cold (1c) with our breakfast on the tray. At 09:16 (we had asked for breakfast at 09:00 at check-in) a lady turned up to open the door. The breakfast and room were freezing cold but we were hungry and most places in town don’t open until 10am so ate up! There was no apology or explanation offered.

So overall, great hotel but I’d recommend you skip breakfast.

Very difficult property to get to if you are not familiar with the roadways. Parking is exorbitant. We did self check in as we arrived late and it was very efficient. Our room was on the fourth floor. There is no elevator, which is not a problem however the multiple staircases were winding and very narrow and quite treacherous. We couldn’t take our bags up. We had to put a few items in small bags/backpack and take them. No bottled water - I’m sure it was tap water in a pitcher. The room itself was quite unique and nicely decorated, however it was very dark, even with the lights on. It was very noisy with street noise, constant bells ringing from the church and on the hour. The two women at reception were lovely and did offer to move us to a lower floor but we were only there two nights and didn’t want to move our things. All in all a disappointing stay.

Parking is €25 for a full day in the garage nearby. Shops and dining (and bike rentals) are walkable easily.
Staff is practically nonexistent, which is okay if you don't need them but if you needed things it would likely be difficult. Plan accordingly.

No lift, 46 stairs (narrow, spiral) to top room

Checked in late for a Deluxe Room with Canal View. Did not realize it would be on the very top floor. You must climb a total of 46 steps to reach the room - which includes 13 steps from to the entrance up to the room’s floor. Knew there was no lift but for whatever reason thought it would be one floor up.

Room #14 was spacious, bathroom large and newer. Hotel is in a nice location. View is nice - accessible when standing to look out the windows.

The problem for us was the stairs - having to navigate those every time you might want to pop in to your room (up/down) was something we were unable to manage and we had to find other accommodations.

So if stairs might pose a problem for you, be sure to verify the exact floor of the room you are reserving.

Location is perfect, and the room was lovely and comfortable. The bathroom was so dark, even during the day, that it was hard to put in my contact lenses and impossible to apply makeup. Water pressure was inadequate and bathroom door squeaked loudly. Request to install battery in non-functional lighted magnifying mirror and to oil squeaky door went unanswered.

Lovely Hotel, Shame About the Noise

Lovely hotel, great location. Everything you’d need. Nice comfy beds, only wish we could have got some sleep. Very noisy, with people yelling in the street all night and the church next door with full on bells every hour and half hour….yes that’s all the way through the night. At best we’ve managed 6-7 hours of broken sleep over the whole of the two nights we were there. Not really the hotels fault, but there is absolutely no sound proofing, and they do provide ear plugs. Except they don’t tell you about them, so we only found them on the second night. A really small thing, but a niggle when you’ve had no sleep. They didn’t refresh the coffee pods, so we couldn’t get a much needed boost when we crawled out of bed.

We had a lovely experience stay but there are a few things that could be worked on. Overall it was very nice.

The breakfast was delicious and very fresh. it was European style but still very nice. The beds were very comfortable and it was within walking distance of some lovely bars and restaurants.

The reception opening hours says 8.00am - 7.00pm but on both days there was no one there at times during the allotted reception time. Yesterday the reception was all locked by 6.30pm. This was one small item but it didn't take away from our overall stay.

Our experience here was amazing! We were upgraded to the Presidential Suite at no extra charge (and didnʻt even ask for the upgrade!) and the suite was truly luxurious! It is located near the university, right in the middle of the area we wanted to explore, so it was perfect.

The room was beautiful as was the bathroom. The shower and bath were unsafe for older people- no grab rails on a slippery floor. Also no pegs in bathroom to hang things on.
The sound deadening was very poor and disturbing from the room above. Breakfast inflexible in timing. Expensive for what it is.

Our room was beautiful with three huge windows overlooking the canal. Leiden was a lovely university town with lots of good restaurant options. My husband is a cyclist, and was pleased with the ease of renting an electric bike from Easyfiets and it was easy to navigate the region with the Dutch bike routing system. Perfect temperature for biking and no rain the first week of May! Very kind and helpful staff—especially Anna who cleaned our room!

Steep spiral wooden stairs, no lift. Breakfast could be a little less food, I wasted much of it. Especially don't book the room on the top floor with the bathtub, you won't enjoy it. Only shampoo soap and body lotion in the bathroom - I would like to see better bathroom amenities to match the excellence of this hotel. The location is about a 15-20 minute walk to the station, mostly flat.

Steenhof Suites was a beautiful property. We were in the Presidential Suite as that was the only room left when booking, and it was amazing. Besides having a very large bedroom/living room area, there was a beautiful bathroom and gorgeous modern kitchen. To top it all off, there was a washer and dryer with detergent included! The property was renovated beautifully and had modern furniture which made it interesting in this old building. There isn’t a staff there 24 hours so you do have to give them an idea of when you’re arriving. They also don’t have a kitchen, but breakfast was brought in at the time you requested and was wonderful. I can’t recommend this property highly enough!

Waited 45 minutes for the after-6pm-receptionist to answer his phone and let me in. Yes, they knew I was coming at 8pm. But aside from needing to replace him with a night manager who answers his phone instead of partying, excellent hotel.

This is a wonderful boutique hotel in a 15th century building in the heart of Leiden. The hotel is in perfect condition, and the staff is very friendly an helpful. The reason that my rating is less than 5, is the absence of an elevator. More senior customers may find it difficult to climb spiral staircases to their rooms. It would be important to mention this in the hotel description.

Two Beautiful buildings run together, one with marble floor, one solid oak. Astoundingly quiet, even though it's in the middle of Leiden. The goal staff are not on site in the night, but we had absolutely no sense of their absence, and they were really prepared to have us check in late if necessary. Can not recommend this hotel enough. We will certainly stay there again if occasion arises

Modern room in a historical building

This is a lovely renovated hotel in a historical building near the center of Leiden. We loved the location. Our room (#3) was beautifully decorated and had lots of space. The shower was amazing. Our only complaint was that we could hear the people above us as they walked around and talked. That said, the folks below us could probably hear us too as the floor boards creaked a lot. The staff were friendly and helpful. They had a small outdoor room in the back to store our bikes.

Second stay at Steenhof Suites and will definitely be back on my next trip to visit family in Amsterdam and Leiden. Beautiful, large, unique rooms and perfectly clean. Even in the midst of a lockdown, we felt welcomed and cared for. Just be sure you have a phone connection so you can call them if you check in late at night!

Ik en mijn dochter hebben het heerlijk gehad. De kamer was perfect, gezellig licht, lekker bed. Alleen het kussen was te dik, daardoor hebben wij niet heel goed geslapen.
Wij dachten dat het een hotel zou zijn met een receptie en een gezellige bar. Dat vinden wij gezelliger.

Het ontbijt was heerlijk. De ontbijtkamer was heel koud, omdat de voordeur wel 6x openging. Erg onrustig ook.

Exceptional experience on all levels.
1. Accommodating staff and noteworthy hospitality. The hostess was very accommodating when she found out we had a lot of luggage. She adjusted our stay to a lower level. We were so grateful for this accommodation. NOTE: there are no lifts.
2. Room accommodations are superior. The pictures do speak for themselves. Very roomy.
3. The location to the canal shops and dining locations is perfect. NOTE: Parking is limited around the hotel.
4. Breakfast. We would highly recommend the breakfast. The best we've had in the Netherlands to date.
We are in the Netherlands at least 3 times a year and we will make the Steenhof our go to accommodation from now on.

Great location near canals, dining & shopping.

When we were there, the front door to the hotel (which opens via motor) stopped working. It was a problem because the hotel reception closes at 8pm, so the hotel had to leave the front door unlocked all night so guests could get back into their rooms. Leiden is a safe city and it was not a problem, but the hotel might want to consider a better way for guests to feel secure and get into the building after the hotel staff leaves.

Wonderful hotel over looking a canal. Great staff. We had top floor room with the exposed beams, watch your noggin. Hotel has no elevator but staff helps with luggage. Good breakfast, not included. You need a cab from the train station. Would not stay any where else when visiting Leiden.

Lovely Leiden Location.

Beatitiful house with great attention to interior design in a sympathetic renovation. Room at 'top of the house' has lowest beams and many stairs (no lift) however as we knew about this it is not a criticism - just a warning. Nice toiletries, coffee machine, water etc. Wifi and Netflix although advertised were not working - probably top floor too far from router - fortunately we weren't there's to watch tv but it should be addressed. Perfect location for exploring Leiden, we would definitely revisit. Staff very friendly and attentive. Payable parking close by.

Charming Boutique Hotel along Canal in Leiden

Great new boutique hotel in excellent location in Leiden. A short walk to many shops, restaurants, and points of interest. The owner/proprietor and her staff are very welcoming and helpful. The building has been nicely restored with many original features. Note however that there isn't a lift and the rooms do require going up some somewhat steep stairs. The top room also has some low beams, which requires that someone close to 6 foot/~175 cm to duck when moving around. Otherwise room is very charming and well equipped (though power plugs are a bit hard to get to). Did not have breakfast in the hotel's newly renovated breakfast/bar, but the food is brought in from nearby Anne & Max restaurant, which is excellent. Hotel only has 5 rooms, but apparently the owner is expanding next door with 8 more rooms. There is also a popular fitness facility right next hdoor. Grocery store is just 2 blocks away. Leiden is very charming and friendly, though bicycles rule the road....

I think the word PERFECT would sum it up

After reading all of the good reviews, I decided to book a month in advance.
We arrived to the hotel at 21:00, and the beautiful Sharleen was waiting for us as promised (we let her know we will be late in advance).

She greeted us with her big natural smile, and after a short explanation led us to an upgraded room with a terrace. What a nice surprise.
Perfect room!!! It’s really big in comparison to standard rooms in Holland. Everything was beautiful and clean, and the terrace was really the icing on the cake.

The location is the best in Leiden, and overlooking an amazing little park.

Sharleen was very helpful with every need we had, and you can really feel that she has a huge hart and that her good spirit is genuine.

We were actually upset that we had to leave towards Amsterdam :-)
We really hope to return to the lovely Leiden soon, and there's absolutely no doubt that we shall be staying in Steenhof Suites again.

A gem in Leiden

This may have been the nicest hotel room we have ever had--my wife and I talked about it and it was either the best or one of the top two. Excellent location in a great neighborhood in Leiden. It's close enough to anything you're likely to see or do, but just far away enough from the noise and busyness of the rail station area. The owner greeted us and took us through the place. It is an amazing combination of old and new, with all modern fixtures and conveniences in a structure that dates back 600 years. Wonderful place!

Beautiful hotel right on the canal in the center

We were warmly welcomed and showed to a beautiful room which overlooked the canal. Stylishly appointed and communal kitchen area/terrace was a stunning feature.
We had a fantastic breakfast and our 1yr old was welcomed & accommodated too. We would definitely stay here again.

Very nice boutique hotel

Room was very nice and had been recently renovated. A few negative notes, we were in the room on the top floor (Lodge Suite), and there are two roof beams that are low that create a hazard for tall people. The bathroom was extremely hot as the service room (hot water tank for the building) was adjacent to it and was emitting a lot of heat.

A beautiful Hotel Hidden in Leidens City Centre

The Steenhof Suites is a lovely B&B, with very courteous and friendly staff, with beautifully renovated large suites, top of the line. The only unfortunate part of the hotel is that although beautifully renovated, it is still old and therefore lacks proper insulation between floors. A minor problem that can maybe be improved with carpeting. it is a fairly new B&B, so be sure to ask how everything works, as I found that it should have been explained better upon arrival.
All in all it was beautiful, love the size of the rooms, and yes I would go back.

Hartstikke aardig personeel en ideaal gelegen. Kamer was precies zoals op de site en voldeed aan alle verwachtingen. Heerlijk ontbijt geregeld vanuit Anne en Max om de hoek.

Zeer aardige receptionist met goede tips voor plaatselijk Leiden.

The room had beautiful period details which were well restored & true to pictures. A good size bathroom & shower. A very small selection of towels (only just enough) and the small fridge was sometimes noisy (came on & off).

Wel beetje duur ontbijt, maar verder goed. Mooie kamer, schoon, ruim. Vriendelijk en behulpzaam personeel. Geweldige locatie.

Hele mooie kamer. Badkamer wel wat aan de kleine kant. Kan er je toiletspullen niet kwijt. Voor 1 nachtje niet erg.
Onbijt beneden wordt(extern) gebracht op een plank. Was prima hoor, maar onze voorkeur ligt bij een ontbijtbuffet.
