The information on the hotel is very misleading. The main picture on the site shows the beautiful \"hotel\" sitting the lake with a lovely patio for meals. Actually the hotel is next door to this building and whilst it was not terrible or anything, we thought we were getting to stay in the main building. To be honest I would not have paid the rate asked if I had known this at time.

Il y a un abri pour laisser les vélos. Les environs sont parfaits pour une marche à pied tranquille, malgré que le château était fermé. Il y a beaucoup de portes d’accès pour la réception de l’hôtel, l’emplacement des chambres aurait avantage à être mieux indiqué à partir de l’accueil. J’aurais pensé que le décor aurait été plus « château », c’était plutôt moderne…dans l’ensemble nous avons été satisfait. Tranquille à 2km du centre historique de Leyden. Séjour d’une nuit seulement, de passage à Leyden.

This is a bait and switch. The bait is the beautiful castle in the main picture but the rooms are actually located in a separate motel looking building. It is implied that the accommodation is in the castln, we were very disappointed that the castle is only for tricking us to go there. Dishonest!
Gave three stars (that is very generous) because the grounds look nice (there is a beautiful castle 600ft / 200 meters away) and the breakfast was good.

Disappointing stay was

W were glad that we only booked one night. Firstly we mistakenly thought the hotel was within the Kasteel as shown in the publicity photo. We were surprised to find that the hotel was a separate building, maybe we had not read the details carefully rather than having been mislead. The hotel in general was very nice and the staff friendly and efficient. However I had booked one of the more expensive rooms because my wife as pensioners do not get many outings and we particularly wanted a comfortable room that had extra amenities such as a refrigerator, coffee machine etc. We chose the hotel because it was described as dog friendly and we have very small Maltese dog, so when we checked in we were disappointed to be told that we could only have a standard room because we had the dog with us. Considering there was a 25 euro charge and we were denied the room of our choice, we were left wondering what the charge was for! We found the standard room very disappointing, and as an ex Airline pilot have seen more than a few, and this was amongst the most uninspiring. It was dark, dull, no curtains, only a roller blind and in almost all respects very uninspiring. On the good side, it had a nice tv and internet worked well and the bathroom was clean with a very powerful shower. From the website photos the superior room look very nice and might have been more acceptable,but despite beautiful grounds around the hotel and very nice common rooms we would not consider revisiting.

We stayed Thursday and Friday nights. The Thursday was really weird; empty, staff hard to find etc. The room itself is definitely 3* and no more, but the beds/linen etc are clean and good quality. It’s more of a high end conference centre than a hotel. The first breakfast was equally odd, no one from the hotel spoke to us at all!

We ate in Lieden both nights, which with a hired bike was great.

Second breakfast was a totally different experience and what I’d expect from a hotel.

The grounds of the castle (which isn’t the accommodation or dining room etc) were excellent. Well kept and tidy.

Overall, weekend service was great. Mid week less so.

Absolutely worth it. Went in mid spring, and the grounds are gorgeous, lovely to explore or take a stroll in. The area was lovely too - cute little shops, restaurants, and charming old houses on cobblestoned streets. Very peaceful, safe, and quiet. 15 minute walk to the nearest bus station to head into Leiden Centraal (nearest major train station), so transport is still coinvent.

Absolutely stunning scenery in the countryside to go with quiet, quaint hotel rooms. The escape from loud, busy city life was wonderful and the staff there was welcoming and accommodating. The breakfast buffet had a little bit of everything as well. Wish we had stayed longer and will definitely be back!

The only negative I had was check in..we arrived at 2:50pm check in is at 3pm. She refused to check us in and we sat and stared at her until 3pm.and then she would check us in. Ridiculous if you ask me, wasn't as if we were hours early. The restaurant could use more options, but the room was very nice with a door to the terrace

The locations is wonderful. The hotel is just a 20 minute or so walk from the train station and central Leiden, but you feel like you're on a rural estate. I enjoyed walking around the property and seeing the many large old trees and hearing and seeing many species of birds.

Remarkable castle nestled in ancient beech forest

Remarkable location in the near suburbs of Leiden. Inexpensive bike rentals and flat bike lanes all the way to town make this an easy 10-15 minute ride to Leiden center. (It would probably be an hour's walk.) There are a few restaurants in the neighborhood within 15 mins walking, but one needs to cab or bike into town for the selection and price range Leiden offers. The hotel looks like a favorite place for weekenders, empty nesters. The restaurant is positioned as an elegant site for dining--breakfast and lunch also served. We were on university business (and budgets), so we did not use it, but headed into town for sustenance. The immediate environs of the hotel is amazing, you are surrounded by majestic beech forest that conveys you back a century in time. The hotel is not in the castle, which is used for special event rentals, but rooms are 100m away in a nicely-appointed annex of rooms. They were nicely appointed, modest-sized, clean, and amply sufficient. Front desk staff cordial and helpful. We booked there because the Leiden hotels were full, and for the experience, I am glad we did.

Great little spot with some green space.

The hotel was good. If you are looking for something different then this may be your hotel. It is a little outside the city but in a good neighbourhood, and surrounded by green space. We were able to walk into town but it may be a bit far for some. The room was comfortable, nothing to complain about, our room even had a patio.

Did the job, couple of nights stay in Leiden. Well positioned with buses to train station, don't try to park in Leiden. Regular trains to Amsterdam. Hotel portrays the image of the old building, but that is for business conferences and weddings and the like. You stay to the side in a 60's style building with no air con in bedrooms, so 30C the day I arrived and the room was uncomfortable. Limited parking if hotel is full.

An okay Stay

It was an okay stay. I would consider the Landgoed Kasteel Oud Poelgeest more of a guesthouse than a Hotel. It has nice surroundings being in the middle of a park-like woods. It is a good distance away from Leiden itself.
The bathroom could use a door on the shower and the sitting inside the room is limited to one chair....wenn you book a room for two I would expect two full size chairs. For a short 2-3 night stay it's okay.
I also consider the breakfast for a rate of 15 Euro pretty expensive since the choices of Foods are very limited.

A great stay, we'd go again.

Located in a beautiful canal town. The property was very quiet with the lovely sounds of nature throughout the grounds. The walking trails were very calming for morning or evening strolls. The building and rooms were well kept and relaxing. Although the food was excellent the first night, the quality did not remain consistent through the entire stay. At no point would I say the food quality dropped below three out of five stars though.

A little bit of paradise

This was an amazing hotel, on the grounds of a castle (it was actually the carriage house at one time). A park-like very quiet area outside Leiden. The building was fully restored and the rooms well laid-out and comfortable. The reception staff was fairly helpful. The bus and train systems were very accessible so we didn't have to drive anywhere if we didn't want to. Highly recommended. Just don't try to drive in Leiden!!!

The place is a peaceful oasis in the middle of a strongly urbanized area. As such, there's very little noise to disturb your sleep at night.

You won't be staying in the actual castle, but rather in another building on the premises. The place is rather modern, and most facilities seem to work quite well. It's also kept clean, definitely.

There are quite a few facilities on site, like a bar and restaurant, end even parking is included.

Eine wunderschöne Anlage um die Seele baumeln zu lassen und zu entspannen. Ganz toll wenn man Fahrräder dabei hat oder leiht und Touren ins nahegelegene Leiden oder dem Strand unternimmt.

Nette maar erg kleine kamer. We hadden bij boeking gevraagd om rollator-vriendelijke kamer voor moeder en dochter. Zouden deze op begane grond krijgen. Kregen echter een kamer op 1e verdieping (geen lift) Omgeboekt naar begane grond maar daar maar 1 bed en kamer veel te klein om met rollator te manouvreren. Personeel wel vriendelijk, maar dat loste helaas weinig op aan ongemak.
