One night at the Capella between two photography tours, and it has set a new benchmark for what a hotel can be.
Booked a Premier Room, upgraded unprompted to a Studio Grand Suite with a separate living and dining areas, marble bathroom with freestanding tub, Bamford amenities, a handwritten welcome card from the GM, and hand-painted wooden tortoises as a turndown gift. None of it felt like a script.
The design is the property's real achievement: a new build executing a confident 1920s French-Vietnamese deco vocabulary, every detail considered down to the bakelite phone in the ensuite.
Two throwaway comments I made on arrival were quietly referenced by multiple staff that evening. Anticipatory personalisation usually associated with Ritz-Carlton, executed here with more restraint.
Dinner at Backstage was outstanding.
