Fabulous stay that didn’t disappoint. Lovely team and a great return for us. Spacious quiet room, clean with amazing pillows. Great facilities within the room iron, hairdryer etc. love the old charm of the service- doors opened for you. Everyone was very friendly. Good choice at breakfast. Room was clean and cozy. There was a problem with the toilet two days in a row, but staff offered a new room and eventually fixed the problem. The staff was friendly and welcoming, and housekeeping kept everything tidy. The location is good, but there can be some nightly noise from the bars across the street. I suppose it could be more of a nuisance in the warmer months. Overall, it was a nice stay with good accommodations.

We stayed in room 461 for one night for our wedding anniversary and were very disappointed. For £390 we expected far better. Our room faced George Street, the windows were draughty and not soundproof, letting in street noise, drunken conversations, and even the sound of rain hitting the metal window ledge was loud. The bathroom was tiny (should have a sliding pocket door), with a shower over the bath and no grab rails— making it quite unsafe and awkward to get out of. The toilet flush was a big push button on the wall that required excessive force to work, difficult for anyone with arthritis. The bathroom door had a full length glass panel in it, meaning switching on the light for any night-time use illuminates the whole room. The main door had a gap underneath, letting in corridor noise and light all night. To make matters worse, the nearby lift emitted a loud squeal whenever used. The furnishings were not great either; a tatty, water-damaged table, blackout curtains snagging on frayed curtain nets, and an ironing board hidden at the end of a long, unlit, built in wardrobe, behind all your hanging clothes, makes for a frustrating stay.

The only redeeming feature was the staff, who were unfailingly polite and even sent a complimentary bottle of Prosecco up to us for our anniversary. Sadly, their kindness couldn’t make up for the very poor experience of this \"5 star\" hotel and we won't be returning any time soon.

When we first got there, check-in went well. The woman informed us it was her last day. Weird. So we went up to our room and we noticed there was a bottle of wine and two wine glasses. We thought how wonderful because we had told them at the front desk that it was our 35th anniversary. After two minutes of being in the room, we hear a knock at the door and there’s a young kid they’re telling us the wine was delivered to the wrong room and he needs to take it back. We laughed so hard because it was so low class. Five star hotels do not do that. When we did order wine glasses for a pre-anniversary celebration it took them forever to deliver them. I called again and they brought them right away, but said the wine opener will be delivered by someone else. When the wine opener finally arrived, the young man explained that they are very understaffed. Yeah no kidding. The pillows were extremely uncomfortable. Inexplicably, the room only had one chair. Also, for some reason, they left vacuum cleaners in the hallway, which just looked trashy. That said the staff was very nice for the most part. I love the Byredo bath products too. Anyway, I think an Intercontinental can do better than this.

Beautiful decor and extremely clean. Lovely breakfast buffet and menu along with coffees in the morning. Booked premium king room. Had to move after two nights due to noise from ?something in ceiling / staff room beside us. Constant creaking and thumping. Could not sleep well even with ear plugs in. Staff moved us to another smaller room (no adjustment in room rate) and although there was a utility / fire closet in between, could hear tv next door with ear plugs in. Had to turn on loud AC fan to drown out sound. Very disappointing when paying > £350-400 per night.

Was not given the premium king room I had paid extra for when booking w Expedia several weeks prior to my arrival. I was given a smaller classic king room. The website shows pictures and dimensions of each room. I was clearly given the latter. The manager Hannah was very rude and argumentative when asked to please be given the room I paid for.. She kept arguing w me and insisting I was given the premium room.
We were exhausted and had been traveling overnight from the US to Scotland and Hannah’s attitude and lack of customer service skills were disappointing. After much back and forth we were finally offered a room that better fit the description of what was paid for .
On a brighter note.. The two gentleman (David and Aslan) that showed us to our rooms and brought our luggage up were very kind, personable and professional. I give them 5 stars!

I enjoyed my stay at this property, the room was magnificent. Some of the property’s common areas could use a little refresh (mainly the bathrooms off the lobby area). Staff couldn’t be more accommodating and the little cafe attached to the hotel was outstanding, wonderful service and the best London Fog I’ve ever had. My one challenge was the location, it was a 20 minute walk to get to the main area of Edinburgh which is called the Royal Mile. I didn’t mind getting my steps in, just wanted put it out there as I would likely consider something more centrally located on my next visit.

The hotel is located on Princes Street in the central area of New Town Edinburgh. It is ideal for shopping, cafes, restaurants and bars, with easy access to museums and other popular places for sightseeing.

When I was shown to my room, it was hot & maintenance confirmed the a/c was broken. I was reassigned to a new room. The a/c worked but had a small window facing a shaft. Nevertheless, he room was larger and seemed to be more in line with what I booked. Staff kept it immaculately clean but: The desk lamp stopped working after one day. They replaced it. The hair dryer didn’t work, and housekeeping had to replace that. The shower head belongs in the category of “Chinese Water Torture”. The desk is worn and had evidence of water damage. And the heated towel rack? As chilled as iced champagne on a winter’s evening.

The hotel has a bar, café and restaurant. My booking included breakfast and that is held in the restaurant, Le Petite Beefbar. There is a breakfast buffet there which was great. I also had dinner there which was truly excellent with attentive staff to make recommendations for the food and drinks.

The hotel is billed as a 5-star property. I recommend it but give it 4 stars due to the room experience.

The Le petit Beefbar disappointing

We enjoyed our stay, the hotel was very good the staff were very nice and friendly.
We decided to dine on our second night in the hotel, unfortunately we had a bad experience with what we chose in the Le Petit beef bar. We chose the chateaubriand but unfortunately it was not like chateaubriands we have had in the past which have been tender, medium rare and full of flavour! This one was large pieces of meat which lacked flavour and was chewy! very disappointing. In my opinion not like tenderloin at all! The The person who handled our complaint was non committable but offered to refund half of the price of the chateaubriand which we accepted.

The hotel is made up of two old buildings that have been (sort of) connected. But going from reception to your room can involve a complicated process of going to one floor, walking across, then going to another floor. Staff were super helpful. Breakfast is excellent and the location can’t be beat. And Edinburgh is such a wonderful place to visit!

Very well situated for many of the main attractions in Edinburgh and for bus, tram and train links. The staff were very friendly and attentive. Rooms were comfortable and clean. There was a good variety of breakfast food options.
Slight drawbacks were: our room was pretty noisy (lift, fridge motor, other people's doors slamming and people moving about in the room above), the bathroom is rather cramped and presents a challenge to get in and out of the bath particularly the way the shower screen operated and finally to access some areas of the hotel (eg gym) there was a very convoluted route to and from our hotel room.

This is a beautiful hotel in an historic building in New Town Edinburgh. The staff was friendly and helpful. The service was impeccable. We ate at both the Le Petit Beefbar and Burr and co and enjoyed them both. The hotel is near Rose Street with tons of restaurants and Pubs. We liked that it was a relatively short walk to the noisy and busy Royal Mile, but it is in a much more quiet area. Highly recommended!

The building was very pretty and the public areas are nice. Breakfast was also good, there is enough to choose from. Location is perfect.

We stayed for five nights and was appointed a room with a very noisy A/C, we had to switch it off to be able to sleep. The toilet wasn’t flushing properly as well. The tissue you throw in comes back up. I personally think that this is one of the problem rooms but the one who assigned the rooms should have given it to short staying guests, not to long staying ones. Anyway, we told Reception about it on our second day before breakfast. When we arrived in the evening, they told us that they fixed it. The noise had certainly toned down but not bearable enough for one to sleep through. Also, whatever they did to tone it down made the A/C warmer. The toilet situation was still the same too. There came an apology note afterwards with a bottle of wine from Guest Relations saying that the problem had been solved. Maybe ask the guest first if it was really fixed before sending the card with wine? Also, the thought was nice but lacking in anticipation. I am traveling w/ my 14 year old daughter, why send wine? It was late and we were tired so we just switched off the A/C that night again. On the 3rd day we had an early tour. I informed the Reception that we needed a better solution when we come back that evening. We finally moved to a smaller room but with quieter A/C and a properly flushing toilet on our third night. A bit disappointing stay.

Our second time staying here and The George did not disappoint! The customer service is exemplary. The concierge named Kevin was helping us get tickets to the Castle but there was a glitch in the system. He apologized and sent us to the BIG RED BUS a few blocks away to try and get them. We were able to do so with no problem. But we were surprised to look up and see Kevin jogging toward us to tell us he was able to fix the problem! We were three blocks away and he tracked us down to make sure we were taken care of. Now that's service! We had a slight problem with the air in the room and without asking to be moved, the head of customer service, Hannah, had us moved to a nicer room the next day and delivered a special treat too! Love this hotel!

My only issue was with weekend housekeeping staff: on Sat they left me no tea/milk for tea and on Sun no one serviced my room at all (and I left a tip every day for the housekeeper!) I called and asked for tea and milk and explained that my room had not been tidied/cleaned and I hope that note was passed on. They sent up a lovely man (I apologize that I have forgotten his name - sweetie black man with a shaved head) with tea and milks and I asked him to catch a large stinging insect in my curtains (bee? hornet? wasp?) This was very important to me as I am deathly allergic to stinging insects and did not have an Epi-pen with me (as it is early spring and I was not expecting to see any).

I hadn't stayed here in years. So far it has been a great and relaxing stay. The room is well appointed with things to make your stay relaxing. My favourite thing is the air conditioning as cool temps in the room can be very relaxing indeed. The petit bar restaurant is also very good. Nice staff too. Good decor in the whole place. Location is great if you want to do sightseeing or stay around the castle and art museums around Princes Street. Also very close to the train station. Recommended stay. You will find it very relaxing.

Hotel is located in the heart of the shopping district. We received a competitive offer for our stay but were rewarded with a room that had only a standard double. Okay that’s fine except the room was freezing and we waited a long time to only get tepid water from the shower. Reception staff were quick in resolving the problem and moved us to another room where everything was as expected - in the renovated area of the hotel. Breakfast choice was adequate but overall hot food again tended to be tepid and looked like it had been sitting for a long time. I ordered porridge but because the wait was too great I went ahead with my cooked breakfast. When it eventually arrived - I had finished the breakfast and didn’t feel like eating the tepid porridge that was presented. Definitely a theme going on with inadequate temperatures. Staff were consistently friendly and efficient throughout our short stay. Reception area is inviting and comfortable. Restaurant was closed as it was a Monday so can’t comment.

Perfect stay with only (very) minor flaws

Perfect stay from check-in to check-out and certainly helped by a better standard of room than our last stay (previous one was small, lacked any element of being special).
Reception staff helpful, friendly and welcoming, as were the dining staff.
Room and bathroom very clean and comfortable.
Points to mention for hotel awareness are 1) breakfast, although really good variety, could be warmer and 2) bed pillows full of air rather than fullness.
Other than that this was a really enjoyable stay and we hope to repeat again in the future.

Front staff were very quick and efficient, organised our room very early which we were very grateful for. Breakfast was fantastic and great options. Cleanliness of the room was superb also. Very good experience and would very much recommend to anyone who wants to experience Edinburgh.
