The hotel facilities are very traditional and well kept, our room was amazing from the awesome lake view to the nice tatami floors. The staff was very helpful and they provided support in both Japanese and English with ease. The kaiseki style dinner is a must, as it is an entire experience of delicious and elevated Japanese dishes with Western influences, we were left satisfied physically and mentally. Please remember that you need to book the kaiseki with the half-board additional option if your stay is short, in our case we only stayed one night and we had to add it. Even if you stay for one night you can enjoy the different onsen options they have available which is one of the key assets, just get in your yukatas relax and enjoy.

What a great hotel/rycon. I wanted to experience a traditional Japanese inn. This is it. From my arrival to leaving the staff did a wonderful job making me comfortable and welcome. Kiseke dinner was notable with six courses or more of Japanese meals. Service was as good as it gets best I’ve ever had. Onsen is notable as well. There are indoor and out door baths. My room was special- very large and spacious no shoes worn in the rooms a wonderful sitting area overlooking lake ashi and best of all a wonderful view of Mount Fuji! So special having morning coffee looking out over huge picture window and Mount Fuji. It’s pricey but worth the experience in every way.

The staff were exceptional! Professional and had paid attention to detail. Onsen was such an experience!! Very clean facilities, amenities were amazing, well kept hotel despite its history. Definitely avail for the free shuttle bus from Odawara station in Hakone to your hotel and back but make sure you do a reservation for this especially if you are traveling with luggage. Message Ryuguden hotel through Expedia for reservations. If you travel
Light or miss the shuttle bus, there is local transportation service that will stop near the hotel.

Some of my highlights of this stay were the view, the location, the food, and the service! Those components made for a wonderful stay in Hakone. However, I felt that the room and the hotel seem a bit outdated as a lot of the cabinets were chilling, and there was no air conditioning during our stay. The control panel seems to be broken as the dial didn’t work, but we were later informed that the hotel was running the heat during the time. Fortunately during our visit, Hakone was a bit cooler which the Dyson air fan was helping a little bit. Overall, there were a lot of positives about the hotel that overshadowed the negatives. However, we were expecting a better property condition for the price we paid.

This was a great spot to have some peace and quiet during our busy JAPAN trip. I do have to say that all that changed when a large group came in. The servers were overwhelmed and we were all but forgotten. It changed the whole vibe of the place having a large group talking loudly and being demanding. It would have been perfect otherwise.

Great Ryokan, make sure you plan you travel from the station as limited taxis. Buses are regular but full of Gaijin with massive suit cases who are not always respectful of the locals. The Onsen and view of Fuji San is incredible. Food is very high end Japanese so make sure you understand this. Staff are very nice and helpful and speak English but do try and speak Japanese you are in Japan after all. 10/10

We loved the hotel and the peace that you feel staying there; the outside onsen is a dream, and the view of Fuji-san is unbelievable. The dinning experience couldn't be better, each day was a different surprise, we loved our host called Ran, she was a trainee there, but to be honest she gave us the best service and recommendations, if you stay there aks for her service and definitely will improve your overall experience at dinning.
Overall I loved, my only recommendation would be to have more entertainment for kis, other than that everything was great.

This was a beautiful stay. The facility is a little aged but it's been maintained well and the room views are phenomenal. The baths were clean and there was enough options that getting away from some of the noisier guests wasn't too difficult. In the morning I had the baths completely to myself and it was incredibly relaxing. Absolutely would stay here again. The only thing that was a downside to my stay was the massage. An older woman was doing the massages and it just wasn't good. She couldn't get deep pressure and there wasn't any attention paid to knotted areas. I had several massages while in Japan and this was probably the worst one.

Overall experience of 2d1n matched our expectations. They were accommodating to one of my family members’ dietary requirements. Because it was pouring, we couldn’t rent their bicycle to enjoy the surrounding. The facility is well preserved with tradition layout. One improvement, is to provide right instruction for hotel guests using the public bath. The public bath at level 1 didn’t have keys at its lockers. Can request the locker key from reception.

The property and the staff were excellent. However, the only complaint I have is the lack of pre-check in information. We did not know where the shuttle bus was located for pick up, or which train station the shuttle was at (or the pick up schedule). After missing the shuttle, we ended up using a taxi, which was quite expensive, rather than wait for two hours for the next bus.

Great location with lake views. We upgraded to a Japanese room with private onsen. Room was spacious (four of us). Facilities were also great but biggest let down was ventilation & mould on walls Not great for asthma sufferer. I raised this with the hotel who offered a small reduction on cost of upgrade but this doesn’t really compensate for the bad experience.. The hotel however said they would clean the mould properly next time.

We had a brief 2 night stay at Ryuguden. Given a message the day before, they provided us free shuttle bus rides to-and-from Odawara Station to the fairly remote spot it's located next to the lake. Once we arrived, we were warmly greeted by the reception and our receptionist at the time spoke good-enough English for us to check-in without problem. Then we were given the keys and shown to our room.

The room itself is spacious, plenty of space to sleep, move around, and lounge all at once. Of course, the highlight is the view in front of the window, the view of the lake and Mt. Fuji. It's a great view. As for the (comfortable) futons, the staff laid them out during dinner and then put them away during breakfast.

As for food, it's a chef's course for dinner. A manner of meats, vegetables, seafood, Schrodinger's tofu (the number of times a cube wasn't tofu...). It was delicious. For breakfast, a full spread. Also delicious. Each room gets assigned the same table in the dinner room for the length of their stay.

And then the onsen. The indoor one in the annex building is serviceable. But the view from the indoor/outdoor one in the main building (provided free of charge to guests) is spectacular. There is no better way to relax then to soak and watch Mt. Fuji in the crisp outside air. We onsened twice a day.

As for the location itself, many of Hakone's attractions are at most a 20-min walk. Very convenient.

The Meals and service were excellent. You eat not in your room but in a restaurant. Tee you can prepare by yourself in the room.
Nice view from the rooms! You see the lake with Mt. Fuji-San in the background. Rooms aren't the newest. The bath was not so pretty, but you don't need it because of the Onsen bath. There belongs an indoor Onsen to the Hotel. And beside with a short walk inside you can use the public Onsen free. There you have an inside and outside bath (Picture in the descriptions) Nearby you can start with the ships in two directions - to Moto-Hakone with the shrine and to the Hakone-Roapeway to see the Sulfur springs and eat the black eggs. To expensive or my opinion.

We stayed here for one night while we were visiting Hakone. I had picked it because of the ability to see Mt. Fuji out of the room window, unfortunately it was cloudy and rainy the whole weekend so that didn’t happen :,(. The staff was amazing - beyond helpful with everything. They really made us feel extremely pampered the whole time. However the hotel itself for the price could use some updating which is why I only gave it 4 stars overall. It was built in the 1990s and though it’s in perfect condition it’s definitely dated. The dinner and breakfast were also good (but there was no coffee!!!!).

Onsen, kaiseki dinner, set breakfast were all amazing. super close to Lake Ashi and the Komagatake ropeway (gondola) so we were able to go to the top. Futon on the floor was a true taste of old Japan, but not for me.

This is our first ryokan experience and we are truly impressed with the service and scenery as described. There are English and Chinese speaking staff hence non-Japanese will have no problem in communication. We were 10min late for the shuttle bus service from Odawara station but driver waited for us patiently and assisted with our luggages even. Delicious dinner and breakfast were served at the common dining area.

Lovely hotel. Beautiful, but difficult location.

Ryuguden is a lovely traditional ryokan (Japanese inn) with tatami-mat rooms, excellent set meals, a beautiful onsen (public bath fed from a local hot spring), and unbeatable views. The staff was very friendly and provided excellent English communication in person and over email prior to our stay. The view of Lake Ashi from our room was amazing and serene, although the day was cloudy so we didn't get to see Mt. Fuji. Dinner was excellent with course after course of traditional Japanese dishes (no western menu here, but that's how we wanted it). The open-air onsen was spectacular with gorgeous views of the lake. Sleeping on futons was uncomfortable, but that was the experience we signed up for. The bathrooms were fine, but felt outdated compared to the rest of the space.

Regarding the location, travelers should be aware that this hotel is way off the beaten path. The Hakone region is known for its tourist loop and we hadn't realized that this hotel was not on the normal routes. Getting to the hotel from the loop requires a bus that stops running at 14:30. The hotel does offer a complimentary shuttle to/from the train station, but that's not helpful for visiting other Hakone tourist sites. Happily, we were up to the adventure and when we had missed the bus we found a local ferry service that brought us to within a 10-minute walk of the hotel. So if you want a secluded, beautiful location with few tourists, this is great, but just make sure to plan accordingly.

Great ryokan, especially for foreign tourists

Ryoguden is a bit out of the way from the train station in Hakone Yumoto, but they have a shuttle bus that runs several times a day so transportation is not a problem. The public baths (onsen) are spacious, very clean and recently renovated. The staff is friendly and speaks English and the food is excellent. The hotel is next to Hakone-en, a fun amusement park with an aquarium, petting zoo, a cable car up to a high peak with excellent views of Mt. Fuji and several dining options. I really liked our room which was large, comfortable and had great views of the lake. Overall, I highly recommend Ryuguden (my family and I have lived in Tokyo for 10 years and have been to many properties in Hakone), although it is on the high end price wise I think the property, especially including half board, is a reasonable value.

The room was large, spacious, comfortable and very clean. It had an excellent view of the lake and mountains, as did the hotel in general. The food was good, although not great (for dinner we had prebooked a set menu, which left us no ability to choose options and we'd rather had our fill of cold fishy dishes by this stage in our trip). Breakfast was very good though. The onsen was also very pleasant.

Our visit was let down by our arrival and the location of the hotel far away from other parts of Hakone- and the limited public transport to and from the hotel.

The day before our arrival the hotel sent us a message about a shuttle service from Odawara station. We asked to reserve a place but received no reply. We messaged again on the train in the morning but still received no reply. When we arrived we called the hotel but by the time they explained where the bus was (confusingly the station has two exits and we were at the wrong side) we arrived at the right place only to see it leaving - a minute early, and despite being on the phone to the hotel explaining we were looking for it. There wasn't another shuttle for 2 hours, so we waited for a public bus, which then took a very circuitous route and got stuck in traffic. We eventually arrived nearly three hours later than planned. There isn't much of interest around the hotel and the public transport is slow and infrequent so it wasn't a good base to explore the area.

Amazing view with traditional Japan room

This hotel was amazing. I loved the room and the view that came with it. I wasn't overly thrilled about the beds on the floor but that is because I am used to something else. It was still a unique experience that needed to be had. It was close enough to town and the shrine that we could walk. The dinner was really good as was the breakfast. The hotel was accommodating to adjust the food requirements to my pregnant wife by fully cooking or switching dishes that she could eat. It comes with a hefty price but for what you get it is well worth it.

Absolutely amazing experience from being greeted outside the door to the rooms with names. The staff is absolutely amazing and accommodating. Dinner was 9 courses of traditional fare and the staff was willing to add some miso in case our kids didnt like the offerings (which they did mostly).

The rooms have true picture windows and in the morning we got a real treat with Mt Fuji in all its glory.

The springs are gender split but in this ryokan they are indoor only. Suggest walking to the outdoor one in the adjacent prince hotel.

Good service and nice room

Good service from the hotel as my son is a fussy eater and he only eats noodles, thus the Chef actually prepared noodles especially for him. Their breakfast and dinner are tasty, very good spread of authentic Japanese style food. I had nothing to complain about the hotel as their staffs are very friendly and helpful. They have quite a few Chinese speaking staffs so no problems communicating. The only minus point will be try to arrange for hotel transfer for both ways to Odawara station because the location is up the mountain, quite challenging if travel by their local buses if you have a lot of luggage. I must say, overall I love Ryuguden.

Traditional Japanese Experience

Perfect Traditional accomodation experience. Although expensive compared to traditional hotels, was more reasonable than other ryokans we looked at. Picked up on shuttle bus from train station. Beautiful views of lake Hakone and my Fuji! About 30min walk into town. Reception spoke great English and organised our bag transport back to the station the next day which I recommend so you are free to sight see around the lake.

We were 2 couples and had a great time! The staff were so friendly. Room was traditional set up and view amazing! Had in room massage and used the Onsen (it's indoors and you have to be naked but you should try it!) Dinner was insane, lots of courses and lots of fish but again traditional. We attended dinner in our kimono gowns and toe socks and slippers :) again great service. A bit much having fish for breakfast but part of the traditional experience.

Was exactly what we were looking for and highly recommended, I think was good value for money although one or 2 nights would be enough due to the style of the meals. Awesome experience!

I booked this hotel one day before golden week. It's a little bit pricey. But the good surprise was the traditional food, the view of Fuji mountain and you are eligible to use the princes hotel's hot spring as well. That one has hot spring outside of house. In the morning, jump to it was so nice. And then, in the evening, after whole day outside activities, you can come back and enjoy the hot spring in Ryuguden. the hot spring location is Very close to room. overall it's a nice choice.

It was very nice stay with beatiful scenery to see Fuji mt. In the morning, however it was very pricy especially for full charge for two kids; 9 and 6 years old although they couldn't enjoy the full dinner so we should ordered side dishes by additional charge. It should be better for kids by offerring different kids set menu.

Visited with my family, took various trains and finally a taxi to arrive. Wish I had know beforehand they can arrange a free shuttle from Odawara.

Overall this a great way to experience a traditional ryokan. The service was great from those who spoke English, a little difficult with those who did not. The mats were not bad to sleep on. Food was incredible, something like ten courses.

Hotel is great and service is really good. The only thing is our food servers did not speak English at all. We had a delicious meal that must have been almost ten courses. We were unable to ask what the dishes were, as there was some exotic food included. The baths were great but beware that they are mandatory nude! Not for the shy.

Had a nice view of the Ashi lake and Mt Fuji from our room ( was cloudy when we got there but we got a very clear and beautiful view of the Mt Fuji in the morning ) . Nice onsen. The package includes dinner and breakfast which were plenty and delicious. Quiet neighborhood which is fine to our likings. Got a free shuttle back to Odawara train station

A traditional experience

The room was beautiful, overlooking lake ashi and mount fuji. The tatami floor beds were very comfortable. We went in november, when the trees were in reds, oranges, yellows etc, but the heavy fog meant we could hardly see far. The modern Prince hotel was a 5 min walk away but the restaurant was expensive so we had cup noodles for dinner. Between Prince and ryuguden was a small shopping mall but everything closed at 5pm. The izuhone bus took one hour to get to odawara station. On the whole, food and transport was inconvenient but the room and surroundings made up for it.

Overpriced and inconvenient

Booked Ryuguden for 1 night in Oct 2011 enroute to Tokyo. Was impressed by the initial pictures I found online but found it to be a huge disappointment. The view was acceptable, but that was about it I feel Ryuguden could offer me.

1) Inconvenient transport. It was nowhere near the main transport route, with only 1 bus to the hotel. However, the last bus is really early - around 5pm, and strangely we were told that the Hakone Free pass does not cover this part. The location is also not linked to the bottom part of Hakone and a huge detour would have to be made.

2) Overpriced - with other ryokans offering lower prices at much more central locations, Ryuguden looks overpriced.

Honestly, it was a disappointing stay to start the trip.

Ryuguden in Hakone, Japan

We felt this was an amazing, quiet, older Japanese hotel/ryokan with stunning views of the Lake. My two regrets were that we only booked one night and we did not have our meals in the room--we so wished we had ordered the breakfast and dinner in the room, but they need at least 3 days advanced notice. The dining room/restaurant on the property next door was mediocre at best. This property is in a somewhat remote location, but that is part of its charm and there are ample buses which can take you into the busier parts of Hakone. We loved our stay here!!!

Charmant et reposant, mais déçus par la vue Fuji

Nous avions réservé une chambre avec vue sur le mont Fuji, mais malheureusement la météo n’a pas été de notre côté. Même avec un ciel dégagé, l’angle depuis la fenêtre ne semblait pas idéal, ce qui est un peu décevant vu le supplément payé. En revanche, l’expérience dans une chambre japonaise traditionnelle avec futons préparés le soir était très intéressante et dépaysante.

L’hôtel est calme, discret et beaucoup plus intime que le grand établissement de la même chaîne situé juste à côté. Nous avons apprécié cette atmosphère reposante en couple. Le onsen est agréable, même si celui des femmes est plus limité (pas de bain froid ni de sauna), tandis que celui des hommes est plus complet — mon compagnon en a donc davantage profité.

Petit plus pratique : l’hôtel propose une navette directe jusqu’à la gare d’Odawara, ce qui facilite beaucoup le retour.

Excellent place in Hakone

This place is an excellent place for visiting in autumn. If the weather is good, you would be able to see Mount Fuji from the room and onsen. Some of the staff are able to speak Chinese and English. The only thing that I would remind anyone going would be \"bring towel\" to onsen place if you are living there as there are no towels in main onsen.

Nice views of Mount Fuji from the rooms. A particular, very dated but at the time certainly nice architecture. Makes for a very charming experience. However, some areas urgently need to be updated, e.g. showers, sinks, blow dryers, etc. Everything was very clean, all employees very friendly. Good Onsen experience. Beds not overly comfortable.

What was not OK was the food. There are no choices whatsoever. Only set meals for dinner and breakfast are included (at dinner, a very small and unattractive a la carte menue is also available). One cannot change them, there is no flexibility in the services provided. No explanations are given beforehand what to expect. Quality of food is mediocre, very repetitice from day to day. Some items were OK but overall we had a lot better food elsewhere in Japan.

Steep prices for additional drinks, even coffee for breakfast costs extra. Overall I find this place nice, but overpriced. Would only go back if food quality and service are improved and prices drop and/or updstes are made. Because everybody was so polite and helpful and the outside setting is beautiful (but touristy, you are still close to Tokyo), we keep good memories.

温泉風呂付きの部屋だった。露天風呂では無いが、温泉掛け流しで自分で温度が調節出来て、十分な広さで、家族にも好評だった。食事は派手さは無いが、少量で品数も多く、楽しめた。

STAFFの方々の対応が良かったです。
子連れには不向きかも？子どもも喜ぶ設備があるとより良かった。
また、近くにコンビニ等があるわけではないので夜食等に食べれるような売店があると良いかなとも思います。
子どものバースデー月だった為、事前に電話で問い合わせた所、料理長の計らいで素敵なバースデープレートを用意してくれました。
凄く喜んでいました。ありがとうございました!!

年に数回旅行に行きますが、最近では1番良かったと思います。深夜に他の宿泊者からの雑音なども無く、とても満足出来ました。

멋진 뷰와 훌륭한 서비스, 아쉬운 스파시설

peaceful 그 자체입니다. 놀거리는 없지만 편안하게 쉬다가 오기엔 그만입니다. 조식, 석식도 훌륭했습니다. 나마미루 맛도 좋았구요. 서비스는 더없이 친절했고 청결상태도 좋았습니다. 한가지 흠이 있다면 숙박객전용 온천은 좀 부실하다는 건데 대중탕이 괜찮아서 주로 대중탕을 이용했습니다. 오다와라역에서 픽업, 샌딩서비스가 있어 편하게 왔다 갔다 했네요. 전체적으로 괜찮은 료칸입니다. 다만 전통과 현대판이 복합적인 곳이라 전통료칸을 찾는 분은 아쉬울 수 있습니다.
