The check-in process was poor. Even when I parked my car at the front entrance to check in, no staff came near me, and I was encouraged to take care of all my luggage myself. I wonder if this was a problem with the staff or a hotel policy.
The rest of the service was top-notch. The dining experience was particularly noteworthy.

It was a great location, and we were able to see the lake and the very top of Mt. Fuji.
The hotel was very clean and well looked after. Staff are very polite too!
One downside was that the hotel design didn’t take the hot spring baths into account. The baths were very small and did not offer lake views, which made the experience less enjoyable given the potential views we could have had.

Hotel was good, onsen were so relaxing and rooms spacious. Liked the lounge area! Nice views, unfortunately couldn’t see Mount Fuji while we were there. Breakfast yummy and good vegetarian options.

The down side was some of the staff weren’t the most helpful and their English was very questionable. All other hotels we’d been to were able to help with luggage forwarding including to airports but we were told very bluntly to go to a post office and that they couldn’t help with getting our suitcases sent to Haneda airport.

We ended up wasting over an hour trying to sort this out with the lovely and very patient post office people using google translate to fill all the Japanese forms when the hotel could definitely helped… pretty appalling customer service for a 4* hotel and at the end of the stay left a bad impression. They didn’t even help with our bags to get down their stairs when we left…

We were greeted warmly at the door as we emerged from our taxi during a rainstorm. The hot springs were invigorating. The view of Lake Ashi was outstanding. And the location was unbeatable, just steps away from the Lake Ashi ferry.

This hotel has large spacious very clean rooms. The staff are very warm, friendly and helpful. The view of Lake Ashi from our room was amazing. Unfortunately though, the hotel only has a limited and expensive food offering. On the surrounding street, there is no shopping centre and only one or two eateries with very restricted opening hours. I would recommend you have a car if you visit the area for more than a night. The hotel is large but was pretty empty when we were there - It feels like the hotel would do well to re-invent itself to be a little less formal with a wider range of more casual food areas and better use of the outdoor areas.

Beautiful property right on the lake. We booked a lake view room which I recommend. We were on the top floor and loved our view but I’m sure all rooms are similar. The area has restaurants near by, the pier is 5 mins away where you can hop on the boats to tour the lake and also go up on the cable car. There is also the largest souvenir store right next door. We received a welcome drink at the bar and are reservation also included breakfast which was nice. We definitely would recommend this hotel !

Booked 2 nights at this “great” hotel, only to find there’s no shuttle from the nearest train station. Instead, I endured a cramped 2-hour bus ride to get there. Upon arrival at 14:00, I wasn’t allowed early check-in. Dining options? Hotel restaurants charging $120 per person or nearby spots that only take cash and close at 16:00. Need an ATM? You’re directed to a 7/11 that’s 2 km away—enjoy the walk, or wait for a $1.50 bus each way.

The famed baths—allegedly the hotel’s crown jewel—are small and underwhelming. For $260 a night plus an onsen tax, you’d expect large baths with outdoor options, maybe a cold pool or sauna. Reality? Two baths: one tiny with two hot tubs and another slightly better one with jets and an open-air tub. They alternate between men and women in the morning and evening, so you don’t get to choose.

The property itself feels like it peaked 40 years ago—lots of wood and bronze—but luxury is more than hardwood floors and marble columns. It’s about service, and here it’s sorely lacking. Guests must hand in their keys when leaving and retrieve them on return, which can take 2–15 minutes depending on staff.

Yes, there are plush lounges with stunning Mount Fuji views. But wine? You need to buy a special 500 yen coin to get a measly 60ml from a dispenser. That’s not luxury—it’s a joke. Avoid this place unless you enjoy overpriced mediocrity dressed up as grandeur.

The location of the property is amazing right in front of Lake Ashi. Beautiful views and close to trails and historical areas. The hot spring spa (onsen) are very nice and clean. The hotel itself is old and a bit dated but still worth it.

I am very shocked and disappointed with this property, especially since the room's condition resembles a 90's style with 70's facilities. The carpet is stained with coffee drops, and it's dirty, dark, and uncomfortable. They don’t provide body lotion in a $900/night room. I never expected Japan's renowned resort to be like this.

The food is not delicious either; the breakfast in particular makes you feel like you don't want to return.

Overall, I am very disappointed, and I don’t think it's worth it.

Awesome Hakone Stay

The hotel is impressive, very well maintained in common areas. There is a very nice lounge with great views. The location is phenomenal, you can see the pirate ships moving about the lake. The room was very spacious and had an amazing view. The on-site public onsen also had a great view. Note that if you do not get dinner on the property most restaurants in Hakone closed at 4pm it seemed (assuming guests are staying at a Ryokan?).

The hotels is very peaceful. There is nothing like ending your night on the grass while looking at the Mt. Fuji sunset. We loved our stay. They even included kids skippers. The onsen has Mt Fuju views depending the day you go. The rooms are big, I recommended the water view.

We reserved Junior Suite with a balcony and view of the lake. Our room was spacious and the view was gorgeous. The room was also very spacious and comfortable. Hakone Hotel is walking distance to the Hakone shrine (which is also easily accessible by bus) as well as the Hakone Checkpoint and Onshi-Hakone Park. We highly recommend this hotel!

We loved the old fashioned charm and personal service. The restaurant was fabulous - with fresh linen table cloths even for breakfast. The only reason for my 4 star rating is because the room temperature cannot be controlled and the rooms were unbearably hot at times, making sleeping very difficult.

Long distance, poor amenities. Other than the view of Lake Ashi, there is nothing great about this hotel. Dining options are limited. The nearest convenient store is 1.5km away. They didn’t even have a proper power plug to charge phone(lucky they manage to find alternate plug for us. All the power outlet are used. You gotta remove it.
The balcony area, horrible. With bird poop and dirt lying… zzzz only one staff can speak better English. Gotta rely on google translate to help us.
The area is a dead place after 6pm.

This is a lovely hotel with an amazing view and close to the pirate ship and bus if you plan to do the Hakone loop. The room we had was a good size and had a beautiful lakefront view. The hotel
also has a bar and restaurant with an amazing view as well but it is very overpriced. The happy hour had a couple of random drinks and beer on it but no food. The unfortunate part is that there aren’t many other options around so you feel a bit trapped and taken advantage of. The restaurant is huge but requires a reservation be made and it must be done no later than 5pm which seemed silly as the night we were there, only a single table was occupied and it was only 1 person! The price for the entrees were outrageous- so we wouldn’t have eaten there in any event. An average entree was $90 and up from there. Wine we ordered in the bar was $23 per glass. We don’t have a problem paying that although there was only 1 type of wine to choose from. I would recommend the hotel due to the beautiful location and view but they need to improve their offering at the bar and restaurant. Staff at the bar could also be more attentive as they spent more time polishing the glasses then serving people.

This is a lovely hotel, albeit a little run down in the bathroom. The views over the lake were spectacular. The bar was extremely expensive as were the restaurants and breakfast. Location was great for what we wanted but the surrounding shops and restaurants were disappointing. Everything was shut from 6pm till 11am. Hotel service was polite and respectful but very slow.

Hakone Hotel is beautiful. I definitely recommend a lake view room because you can see Mt. Fuji from your room on a clear day! The hotel staff were very nice. English friendly for foreigners. The area is quiet. There are a few places to eat in the area and a short bus ride to the next town for more restaurants and convenience store. We didn’t eat at the hotel restaurant but the hotel bar was nice. If you have the hakone free pass, there is a bus stop right in front of the hotel so it is easy to get to.

This is a really nice hotel right on lake Ashi. It was super quiet and spacious. The only thing I didn't like is that it was a little far from the other Hakone attractions. I also got sick from the breakfast at the hotel restaurant from some undercooked sausage, which was very upsetting especially because it cost so much.

After reviewing the Expedia.com listing for this Hakone Hotel hot springs, I prepaid Expedia for a three day visit. After arriving, I was refused service to the hot springs because I have a small tattoo on my forearm. The hotel later confirmed that people with tattoos (regardless of size) are strictly forbidden from using their hot springs facilities.

I contacted Expedia via the chat function on their app informing them I was refused service and asked for a refund on my stay. I indicated I had relied on Expedia’s listing and assumed their description of the hot springs to be truthful and accurate before I decided to prepay Expedia. Expedia’s listing made no mention that people with tattoos would be refused service to the hot springs. The hot springs experience was my only reason for visiting that property. Had Expedia provided an accurate, truthful description, I would not have made this purchase.

Expedia refused to refund any amount of the purchase and has, as today, refused to update their online listing to indicate that people with tattoos are refused entry into the property’s hot springs facilities. A basic tenet of commerce is that an advertiser must provide truthful, accurate descriptions of their product or service for the transaction to be valid. False or misleading advertising is unethical and unlawful.

A beautiful hotel overlooking Lake Ashi. It's conveniently located next to Hakone-machi port where the pirate ship stops. The room we stayed in was spacious with a bathtub and had an excellent view of the lake. Although Mt Fuji was not visible due to cloudy weather, we still had breathtaking views of the other mountains across the lake. There are two hot springs in the hotel for guests. The hotel also has drinks for guests at the lounge in the morning and evening.
The restaurant in the hotel serves French food so it was disappointing that we were unable to have some authentic Japanese meals for dinner and breakfast at the hotel. The area is very quiet and there is no convenience store near the hotel. Only one restaurant was open for dinner near the hotel on the day we checked in.

On the conditions it stated that tattoos may not be allowed but then when I got to the bath house there was a warning that those with tattoos will be removed from the premises. This type of rule his old fashioned and out of date. In most prefectures tattoos are now allowed but still are not in this hotel. Sad.

Staff were very helpful with our baggage when we arrived and even as we depart. They are helpful in providing information around the area. The room was a little too warm in the afternoon and there wasn't a faster way to cool it down, but it encouraged us to proceed with our outdoor plans quickly.

Meals in the hotels were expensive and there were no nearby alternatives It was a Monday night). The hotel is well situated with all rooms overlooking Lake Ashi.
The bus terminus is next door making it very convenient for arrival and departure.

This hotel is a pretty decent hotel located at Hakone with free parking and excellent paid breakfast. Great view of the lake too.
When I made the booking via Expedia, I wasn’t expecting that we had to pay additional local tax of JPY150 per person per night.
Would be good to have this called out to your booking guests ahead of time for any extra charges required

The view was wonderful Not too many places open to eat in the evening but we did find the hotel bar happy hour to be good with good food. One problem was only one key which made it difficult one going to the male baths and the other going to the female baths. Easy solution - two keys.

Awesome view of Lake Ashi! Shuttle bus to the train station was an added bonus. Walking distance to a few shrines and hikes. On the clear days you will have epic views of Mt Fuji and be sure to take the gondola rides up the mountains or across Ashi.

Firstly THIS HOTEL IS DAMP. If you are asthmatic or anyone with breathing problems don't come here. The damp is excessive. The downstairs bar had water running down the walls . The smell was so bad we had to leave.
YOU REALLY CANT CALL THIS A 4 STAR???
As with many hotels in Tokyo they are classed as 4 star because they have big rooms. The staff have very little English. They do need to be trained up.The fittings are about 30 to 40 years old... really I don't exaggerate. The wiring is iffy.You can hear sparks from the plugs as japan is only a 2 prong plug. NO earth. We had a lake view which was nice. The pillows are awful and SO soft . I had a bad neck. The beds are low and a bit hard.
You have to pay 1800Yen ( for 2pax) in bus fares. Its quite hard to find the bus stop. Bus number 3. Then … BE WARE !!! The bus ride takes over an hour from Odawara station. This is a very windy journey up a mountain, so if you are travel sick beware. We came from Kyoto on the Shinkansen Train. It took 35 minutes. These trains are great quiet and efficient. Large seat with loads of leg room.
On arrival I was presented with a local tax of 600 Yen. I wasn't informed of this on the Expedia site... Poor guys. Secondly this place is isolated. After 4pm there is nothing and I mean nothing. No shops no cafes. SO you have to eat at the hotel The meals at the hotel are 3000 Yen each!!! You have no choice. My verdict. Knowing what I know I wouldn't touch this hotel. Hakone is nice.

Fabulous stay if only for one night. Didn’t realise that it was an hour by bus from Odawara Station, and all the restaurants around close at 5 pm. Even though it was a little expensive the food was delicious. Tried the Onsen which was a wonderful experience. You can walk to the boat terminals which take you for the cruise on Lake Ashinoko & we were very fortunate to see Mt Fuji as the weather closed in the following day. All in all a wonderful stay.

The property is great -beautiful location right on lake ashi and easy walk to hakone shrine and to catch lake ferry. The onsen is fantastic!
The only downside is the area is a bit dead at night - literally no restaurants stay open for dinner so the hotel is only option.

Good location and nice room. Very clean, well appointed, good size. But the place is a little tired looking. Like every place we stayed in Japan the bed is very hard. We would have had a fabulous view of Mt. Fuji but unfortunately all three days that we were there was totally socked in with fog. The room was warm and we could not turn on A/C because it is centrally controlled. There was a thermostat in the room but it only adjusted the heat temp. So we simply turned off the heat and opened the window. The hotel offered to send up a fan but we declined.

Great view from the room. Facility is clean. The included breakfast buffet is nice. However, dinner at the French restaurant was not that good, food quality and taste was average. After dark, nothing was opened in the area!

Great location. Building and property older. Still clean. Staff and shuttle driver very helpful and kind! Local area restaurants close very early in the day around 1600 so plan accordingly. Also the third floor smells like smoke as they have a smoking area there. The onsens were updated and relaxing.

Two things we did not like we're we could not regulate the room temperature which made it hard to sleep and it was a non smoking hotel with a smoking area directly across from our room which drifted into ours. We loved the location, the views and even though the hotel was dated, it was taken care of. The breakfast buffet was really good too. We would stay here again and just ask for a room away from the smoking area.

Nice lake view room. The room temperature is too high, about 27 to 28 degrees and unable to lower even setting 20 degrees on the controller. Quite clean. Excellent hotel staff. The reception allowed check-in a bit early as the room cleaning was done. Although their English isn't good enough for smooth communication, they tried hard to satisfy our (2 adults + 2 little children) needs. The onsen is public for guests, but clean and convenient. A bus stop is right in front of the hotel and the wharf to board the pirate ship is within 3 minutes walking distance. Dinner needs to be prebooked. The restaurants outside the hotel close by 5pm or earlier.

The building looks a bit dated and some of the furniture has a bit of an unintentionally retro vibe, but the room was spacious and had a nice view of Mt. Fuji. Staff were at times somewhat rude and/or abrupt, for example forcing one of us to leave in the middle of breakfast to change footwear. In another case, we followed the instructions on the sign in the gift shop to make our purchases at reception, but the reception staff abruptly took our things away without explanation and gave them to someone else, who took them to the register in the gift shop. The hot baths are rather small, and the one deemed \"outdoor\" just has a screen window - no sky overhead.

My family of 8 stayed in the Japanese style room. Room was a bit old but was clean and futon beds were comfy.hotel is just next to hakone machi pirate ship station.
Our room faced the lake ashi and had a glimpse of Mount fuji peak. The view is very peaceful and stunning. The only problem is there isn't much restaurants that opens after 5pm unless u eat at the hotel. U may find few convenience stores nearby.

They don't have coffee in the room and I'm asking for toiletries as we are couple and the shampoo is like good for 1 time use but the Japanese who answer my call said they don't refill and like can't understand what I'm asking. Breakfast is very few choices . But it's a very nice view of mt. Fuji an very huge room.

If you are travelling with young kids, this hotel might be a little to far up to travel. The hotel is generally ok but slightly old. The staffs are not as friendly, especially the staff that we encountered at check-in. You have to request specially for a room with view of Mt Fuji, otherwise it would be the one we stayed (photo uploaded).

Wonderful hotel, well located.

Wonderful hotel, with a magnificent view. Conveniently located near the cruises on Lake Ashi and easy to get to by city bus included in the Hakone Free pass. I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Hakone.

Location directly on Ashi Lake. Bus stop right in front of the property, which looks a little dull from the curb. And the hotel offers a free shuttle to/from Odawara station which is a huge bonus. Some aspects of the room were a little dated and run down but overall our western style room was comfy and had incredible lake and Mt Fuji views. We didn't partake in the hotels onsen but it is complimentary for hotel guests. Lastly the bar and restaurant offerings were nice and convenient because the local offerings outside the hotel had shifty hours of operation. Hakone is a nice trip if you're visiting Tokyo and want a little escape from the city.
