This location was perfect for my trip. Emily who worked in the bar made sure that for the nights I was there I had a cold Diet Coke in the Cooler. I came in was super tired and she offered to take my order and bring it up to my room so I could relax. She also made me a rum old fashion to perfection. All of the staff was so nice and always answered my questions they did not make me feel like I was bothering them. Also this location is located a block away from shopping in Stockbridge and on Sundays there is a Farmers Market right behind the hotel. My room was amazing so cute and super clean. I would highly recommend a stay at this location. Thank for a wonderful stay.

Overall, I had a wonderful experience at Nira Caledonia.
The location is unbeatable if you're planning to see as much of the city as possible.
The rooms are beautiful and clean, with astonishing views, although the walls are a bit thin.
I would have given a five-star rating were it not for our, honestly, terrible experience dining at Blackwoods on the last night of our stay.
Four other travel companions and I made a reservation at Blackwoods for 7:15. Upon ordering drinks, bar snacks, and appetizers, we waited approximately 25 minutes for drinks to arrive. Not really a huge issue, but there are only 7(8?) tables in the entire restaurant. After we began to receive our drinks, our server informed us that, because of the current kitchen staffing, they would not be fulfilling our order for bar snacks. Odd, but ok.
We then proceeded to wait an hour for our appetizers.
Once we finished those and began to receive our entrees, all seemed well.
However, once we were 90% done eating, our server then informed us that the chef was \"done for the night\" and we would not be able to order dessert. Not once did the server come over and let us know that the kitchen was wrapping up service (completely fine!), and if we were interested in dessert, we should order soon. Nope - just a sorry, but you don't get dessert.
What a sour way to spend the last evening of our vacation.

We stayed for 5 days while enjoying Edinburgh and the surrounding country. The Nira Caledonia was fantastic. We stayed in the jacuzzi suite and took full advantage of this. No better way to relax from the hills of Edinburgh than a good soak. The room was well furnished and very comfortable. The linens were great and both bed and bath had no complaints. The suite we stayed in was in a separate building and on the second floor with no elevator service. This was not a problem for us. We also had breakfast included in our fare and was very surprised by the offerings. Continental and hot meals were available which were all fantastic. We also had dinner here at \"Blackwoods\". The food was delicious, the drink options were great and the staff was amazing. The PB&J drink was a hit with my wife. And the black pudding appetizer is worth a try.

The location is remarkably quiet and we didn't have any real other noise issues at all. Felt very private and personal. Access to the city is just steps away. If you are willing to walk, the royal mile is just 1 easy mile away.

The house keeping service is also worth calling out as they kept our room spotless and all in-room items refilled daily.

I would recommend this place to anyone visiting looking for something just off the beaten path, but close to everything.

This is an amazing stay for me for 3 nights ! The room is clean and cozy yes I did have to climb to the third floor but the hotel has explained why there wasn’t an elevator. The breakfast is delicious and abundant- you can order from the menu and enjoy the spread they set up by the bar . I could get used to this life !! Thank you !

Beautiful room and comfy bed. Great location, close to transportation. Quiet neighborhood. The walls are a little thin and other guests let their doors slam, but not after 8pm. It is an old building. The hotel was thorough in communicating that there is no air or lifts. Even with that, the windows opened and the stairs weren’t that bad. I enjoyed my stay.

This hotel was AMAZING. From the beautifully decorated rooms to the amazing meals, this hotel cannot be beat. The hotel itself looks very nice and makes a good first impression. The staff we interacted with were friendly and helpful throughout our stay, which we appreciated.

However, there were some significant issues that affected our experience. The bathroom felt quite dated, and unfortunately, cleanliness was a problem — there was body hair and even toenails left in the bath when we arrived. While the staff responded promptly and cleaned it after we reported it, this is something that really shouldn’t happen in the first place.

As an apology, the hotel offered us sparkling wine, which was a kind gesture, but we were on a family trip and not drinking, so it wasn’t particularly useful for us.

We also attempted to have breakfast, but due to kitchen issues, we weren’t able to eat. As we already had plans, we had to leave without breakfast. The hotel said they would process a refund for this, which we are still waiting on and hope will come through as promised.

Overall, while the hotel has potential and the staff were pleasant, the cleanliness issue and breakfast disruption were disappointing.

Lovely hotel, excellent staff. The hotel contacted us prior to our arrival to check our estimated arrival time…. I don’t think the reception desk is manned full time, so this is a smart way to ensure there is someone there to meet you. The staff were super helpful and friendly. Our room was on the very top floor so it was quite a climb, however the offer to help with luggage was there. Being an old building, there’s no lift, so this isn’t the place for you if you have mobility issues! We arrived slightly early and fortunately our room was ready, so we were able to check in right away. The room was clean and spacious- the sofa bed for our 12 year old was already made up. L’Occitane toiletries in the bathroom were a lovely touch, plus bottled water in the fridge too. Coffee machine, kettle, biscuits etc all there for us. The bathroom was clean and modern, with lovely fluffy towels. Surprisingly there was housekeeping even though we were only there for 2 nights. Breakfast was really nice….. a buffet style continental plus cooked options made fresh to order. Everything was lovely and well presented. Again the staff in the breakfast room were lovely. We received a message before we left asking for our approximate departure time, again I assume to ensure the desk was manned. Very smooth checkout process. We were able to leave our luggage to enable us to explore the city on our last day without carting bulky cases around with us. Would absolutely recommend.

Highly recommend paying the rate that includes breakfast. It is a delightful spread of excellent food with good service. The rooms at Nira Caledonia are sumptious, historic and chock full of amenities, including lovely jetted tubs and french bath supplies. The staff is always ready to help you get what you need. The location is outside of the City Centre, but there are many fabulous restaurants near-by and the Royal Mile is only a 10 min ride or a 25 min walk away. We found getting a taxi or ride share to the Museum on the Mound made for a convenient drop off point.

The location of Nira Caledonia is excellent, and I really wanted to love this hotel as it clearly has a lot of potential. We stayed in a Wee Room, which was perfectly fine for what we paid for. However, it was located in the attic and the stairs to reach it were extremely steep — managing four suitcases was a real challenge. It would have been helpful if, at check-in, a Wee Room on a lower or mid-floor could have been offered.

Breakfast was unfortunately the main disappointment. On the first morning the chef had called in sick, so only a continental breakfast was available — this was actually very good, so no complaints there. The second morning, however, we waited nearly an hour for a cooked breakfast, while every other table was served before us. Our order was also mixed up, likely because the waitress didn’t write anything down. I received scrambled eggs instead of poached, and my partner received poached instead of scrambled. Simple steps like using a notepad and repeating the order back would easily avoid these issues.

Overall, I can really see the potential here and genuinely wanted to like this place, but unfortunately it just didn’t quite deliver for us.

I did stay in the small room and the three flights of stairs were a bit much. But the room was so HOT. That is great for sleeping, but it should be easier to turn it down. I had to open a window. The shower was soooooo small and it had a huge contraption of a shower - just simplify and give us more room.
I had dinner (bar menu) which was excellent. But then they had the regular menu and I literally could not find anything I wanted to eat. I wish I could haver ordered from the bar menu my last night. Some people like lighter dinners.
The staff was fantastic. The room was great. I would stay there again - maybe not on the 3rd floor but only because it was so hot and the bathroom so small. But I would do a 4.5 stars.

Size Matters

Before booking, know there isn't a lift or AC in the rooms. Staff will provide a fan for air flow if requested and help with luggage as well. But those facts aren't made known up front. Staff was friendly.

The room was cozy, but the bathroom was very small. I'm 6'3\" and generlaly average build, and still had trouble being comforatable just moving around. It wasn't possible to sit on the toilet with the placement of it in proximity to the sink. As well, there wasn't a shower wall or curtain so the bathroom was extremely wet after taking a shower. Again, I'm of average size (6'3/195 lbs) and when I would move around in the shower my arms would bump the control and accidentally adjust the water to then have it go ice cold or scalding hot. I had to be very careful about how I would turn in the shower.

Overall, it was fine - but it would be near impossible of a large build to physically fit in the bathroom.

The property and room that I had were very, very comfortable, beautifully appointed and clean. The breakfast was delicious and very healthy. It was all a very pleasant day. My only comment is that the hotel is in an old house and my room was right at the top of the stairs on the second floor so sometimes noise traveled from the first floor and lobby late in the evening. Otherwise it was a perfect stay.

LOVE this place in Edinburgh! Beautiful, heritage rooms, stunning neighborhood with walking distance to upper market area Stockbridge, and less than 15mins to the main tourist area as well!
Parking during the day is expensive but free street parking overnight which is helpful. Awesome service and free breakfast (which includes cooked meals too). Love love love! Don’t let the no AC and no lift turn you off because it’s just heritage beauty at its best!

Unfortunately we had an awful experience on the very first morning with very unprofessional behaviour by a member of staff. The manager sought to rectify the issue immediately but it did sour our stay. On the whole the hotel is perfectly situated and should have been a perfect stay. I did notice an improvement after speaking with the manager, just disappointed it happened as it did. In terms of bedrooms, our grand suite was lovely with its own little garden, comfortable bed etc. the communal areas need some attention - general painting, carpets torn in places and updating.

I would stress that the Manager did address my concerns very quickly and I understand that there were actions taken after my experience.

If you are Coeliac or gluten intolerant, what I would say is that food options at breakfast are minimal.

Everyone was so lovely at the hotel, especially Nicole - she really made a difference in our stay just by being so friendly and making an effort to get along with our little toddler (talking in Spanish and having little conversations with him). We never expect this but so nice when it does happen!

The only word of warning - there is no elevator so be aware before you book. We had to climb 64 stairs to get to our room, which could be challenging after a full day of sightseeing.

I recently stayed at Nira Caledonia in Edinburgh, and it was an absolutely wonderful experience. The check-in process was incredibly smooth, and even though we arrived at 10am, the staff kindly held onto our bags so we could explore the city. They even messaged us when our room was ready, which was a few hours before the usual check-in time.
The room itself, complete with a hot tub, was beautifully decorated and felt incredibly cosy. It was the perfect spot to unwind after a day of sightseeing. We also requested additional coffee pods the next day, and to our surprise, they didn't charge us and gave us six extra pods – a lovely touch that truly reflected their hospitality.
The breakfast was another highlight. It was cooked to perfection and offered incredible value for money. The entire stay was made even more special by the genuine warmth and attentiveness of the staff.
I couldn't recommend Nira Caledonia highly enough. From the excellent service to the stunning room and delicious breakfast, it truly made our time in Edinburgh memorable.

A Wonderful Stay – Perfect for Our Special Trip!

We had an amazing stay at Nira Caledonia. The hotel itself is beautifully designed. Everything was clean, cozy, and well-maintained.

The lady at reception was incredibly welcoming, friendly, and helpful throughout our stay. Her warm demeanor made us feel right at home, and she went above and beyond to ensure we had a great experience.

Disappointing and not really grand

We booked a Townhouse Grand room for 1 night. Having looked at the photos online, the reality was a disappointment. Furniture was scratched and shabby but the main issue was the shower. I can live with a bathroom being small, but this was cramped, with an over bath shower that both my husband and myself struggled to get into and out of ; it was so high! I am only 5 feet tall and my husband has arthritis so clambering in and out verged on the dangerous! The shower itself was a huge let-down. It looks very fancy with a variety of \"jets\" but the actual water flow was a bit pathetic, not at all invigorating. Also, the bathroom light switch was literally dangling from its backing plate.
We mentioned all of these concerns to the young man at reception and asked for a change of room. He was politely disinterested and told us all the rooms were full but that he'd ask an electrician to look at the dangling switch next morning ( when we were due to leave)!

On the plus side, the location was quiet, the room was very clean, the bed was very comfortable, the towels were very fluffy, the breakfast staff were pleasant, the cooked breakfast was nice and the building itself is beautiful.

When we checked out, the young lady at reception did not ask about our stay but brightly told us to enjoy the rest of our day.

Finally, parking nearby on weekdays is a bit of a nightmare at £4.50 per hour and wardens seem to be plentiful, probably standard for Edinburgh. So, a treat that wasn't really.
