A lovely hotel and a great welcome

We received a great welcome. It would be good if passport info could be provided in advance to speed things up a little.

The room was spacious and elegant. From an eco point of view, a option to not have towels and bedding changed would be good.

The one downside was a group at breakfast and the staff did not cope well with that.

I loved the historical and unique artistic interior

And enjoying a drink or meal in the evening
We especially appreciated all the staff who were so friendly and helpful

Without doubt this is the best hotel in town for the last over 10 years that I have been coming to Porto. The service is absolutely outstanding and the furnitureof high quality! This is a 5 star hotel so it is not cheap but well worth the price. We highly recommend!

I don't normally give reviews, but I kept getting emails to do so, so we here we go.
I paid over 280 USD a night for a shower with mold and dirty black carpet. I informed a staff member about the mold (I did not want to shower in that) they said they’d address it, instead they entered our room while we were out and dropped off 2 tiny brownies.
They chose style over substance in every way.
The bathroom tiles were dangerously slippery and the cheap trendy fixtures in bathroom hard to control. Water pressure so strong on all fixtures.
Beds were uncomfortable. The air freshener way too strong if you’re in the lobby or bar for more than 5 mins prepare for a headache.
They had one bartender staffed between two active bars in different buildings.
Our room wasn’t cleaned after being gone for a full day.
The positive: buffet was ok and everyone friendly. Bad value for price. Stay away.

Caterina and Leo were so very welcoming at reception and helpful during my stay. I was impressed by the hotel and how it linked to the sister hotel next door...I hadn't realised that when I had booked it but I was delighted it shared the same beautiful garden. My room was pleasantly large and airy and the bathroom was exquisite. Gorgeous quality and with a bath...hurrah! You walked through the garden to get breakfast at the sister hotel and it was fabulous!!! Lovely, quality food and a nice range of things. Staff at both hotels are excellent and a real credit to the company. Thank you! The only slight negative from me during the 3 nights there, was that after one daytime event in the garden, the solid kitchen door was banging below until the early hours, which shuddered through the room-I was in room 107 and apparently guests in 105 (next door) had complained too. Perhaps a complimentary drink or similar would have been a nice gesture for the disturbed sleep but at least there was a genuine apology from the chap at reception. Apart from that- a lovely stay and I would go back!

Really nice property,away from the crowds but at the same time close enough to walk around and explore Porto. There is a little uphill walk back to the hotel so probably not great if you find walking hard. The room sizes were amazing and the bedrooms are lovely - huge rooms and very tastefully decorated in a retro seventies style, massive bathrooms with double sinks and bidet. Didn't like the fact that the bathroom had no walk in shower - most people would prefer if a shower rather than having to climb into a very deep bathtub. There was ample space in the bathroom for a shower cubicle. The shower installation was also very high up so not easy for a smaller person to adjust. All in all I was very happy with my stay the staff were so friendly and very helpful. Initially it didn't start well as on my first evening I arrived to a room that was sweltering hot and the air con was not working - this took a while to resolve and eventually late night I had to move rooms after having unpacked already - bit of a bother but all good in the end I was offered a different room where the ac was working better. The only other thing I would mention is that the tea in the rooms is very limited and for such a nice hotel they were very frugal providing only 2 teabags a day and only 2 varieties - I would expect more from a 5 star hotel , also in such a hot climate one bottle of water a day is not really sufficient. Though these are small points they do matter.

Wonderful stay in Porto!

This was a lovely boutique hotel not far from Bolhao market. The welcome we received was probably the best we've had - with a glass of Port and a Pastel da Nata each! The receptionist and his colleagues couldn't have been more helpful with anything we asked of them. The room was very comfortable & clean, and the breakfasts were fresh, varied and tasty. The only gripe we had was the shower; we were allocated a room for people with restricted mobility as we'd asked for a twin. However, the shower has neither a screen nor curtain so the water went everywhere. A minor issue and it certainly didn't spoil our stay.

A very deceiving entrance, looks like a very average hotel in a quiet back street. But rooms are a very good size, staff very helpful and a good breakfast. A very good boutique hotel & convenient to walk to the historic centre, in a quiet location. What let the hotel down was a very slow check in, had to wait 25minutes, however staff were very polite & very helpful in recommending sites & key places to visit in Porto

This is a beautiful, artsy boutique hotel in Porto! The building was converted from old art school and is full of artworks from previous students! It is stylistic and comfortable, and the rooms are in good size. From the moment you step in, it gives a completely different vibe from chain hotels like Sheraton and Intercontinental, where we stayed in Lisbon. It felt warm, eclectic, and artistic.
The staff was top notch, and it is evident that they take service to heart. Christiana, the mid day manager was simply wonderful, as were the concierge and morning manager (can’t recall the gentlemen’s names!).

Staff was so welcoming upon our ( early ) arrival . They offered us nata ( pastry ) and port wine and then opened a map and mapped out all the points to see and eat at throughout the city . Our room was beyond amazing ( lybrary suite) . 2 huge rooms and a large bathroom with shower and tub. We had dinner at the hotel our first night which was a tasting menu and they accommodated my dislike of seafood . We also had breakfast included in our reservation . The hotel is not by the others but an easy walk to everything .

I loved this hotel - The main room and the bathroom both were much more spacious than I had expected. The bed extremely comfortable, water pressure and quality in the bathroom excellent, and no noise from outside or surrounding rooms. The service was fantastic - they went out of their way to make me feel welcome, answer all of my questions, and provide great personalized recommendations with no language barriers whatsoever. Thank you for supporting my wonderful visit! Note that the adjoining restaurant works with the hospitality school next door, so some of their staff are still learning (but very nice!).

fantastic customer experience from the hotel staff - you are given a mobile phone linked to the hotel so you can contact them if you are struggling , it links to where you are and gives you info .the hotel is spotless .. we did have a couple of issues around breakfast which I have taken up with the hotel directly . the hotel is approx. 10 minutes away from most of the main parts of Porto and approx. 30 minutes from the River area although ubers are cheap enough

In the hotel lobby it says \"The art of welcoming \" which the Artist Hotel are very good at. On check in I was offered a glass of port wine and a traditional Portuguese custard tart called Nata both very welcome after my journey. The receptionist also spent a lot of time explaining where all the best places to visit were.
The hotel was spotlessly clean. It is in a quiet street about 10 minutes walk from main part of town.
I was given a large double room even though I was there on my own. The staff were friendly and attentive and keen to help.
Breakfast was good with other choices in addition to the continental breakfast.
My only negative was on one of the days I returned to the hotel after 9pm wet and hungry but was unable to get any food at the hotel even though the bar was empty and only a handful of people in the restaurant.
Porto is a beautiful city well worth a visit.

Front desk staff was very helpful in giving us directions and understanding how the restaurant functioned. The location of the hotel is very close to the downtown area but also quiet. Just be prepared to walk up hills!

The rooms are very large by European standards and very comfortable. The bathroom was especially roomy!!

This is a hospitality learning hotel and it's great. Super friendly and helpful. This hotel is a little up from a lot of the tourist zone so you have to do some walking but we enjoy that but it's something to keep in mind if you want to be in the middle of everything. A really incredible dinner that can accommodate various dietary restrictions.

Too far from places of interest. Phone in the room did not work. Reception promised to fix it , but never did . So we could not call to reception for questions, could not have wake up call, etc. When we checked out, receptionist could not call for taxi. He said that taxi service is not unswerving. We lucky that we had Uber on our cellphone.

It is hard to know where to start! The reception staff were welcoming and informative. The interior had a feeling of spaciousness and the decor was cool. Our room was large and had all the facilities that you expect. Breakfast wa buffet style and all the items were of good quality. The hotel is training fAcility for young people going into the hotel business, so they are all very professional. The dining room only offers a Tasting menu, so the dishes are a surprise (but a good one). One night it was fully booked for a group. The hotel is 30 minutes downhill walk from the Douro (all uphill coming back) it is 5 minutes from the metro. All in all we strongly recommend The Artist.

A bit out of town.

We chose this hotel because of the novel concept of the restaurant. However if I had not booked for the first night a long way in advance we would not have been able to use it. There were private events booked on the Saturday night and Friday night and we could not even have a drink at the bar as they closed it. When we did eat at the restaurant it was very slow. Five tasting courses and one main took two and a half hours. Food was good and reasonably priced. The hotel offer a smart phone while you are there and this was very useful for finding our way around.

We happened upon this place in the Lonely Planet guide and figured we would give it a try for the one night we were in Lisbon. The accommodations are more like a B&B then a hotel. We were greeted by Juan, one of the owners who was exceptionally detail oriented and personable. we stayed in one of the studio suites so we were around the corner from the entrance. It was a great space with a small kitchenette and I think it would have been amazing if we were staying a bit longer. Given the short time we had in the city, Juan gave us some great recommendations and we were off. We didn't spend too much time in the room, but really liked it while we were there. It wasn't very centrally located but it's a two minute walk to ths Rossie metro stop and we were able to get everywhere we needed relatively quickly. Great choice if you want to feel like you have a home away from home!

Great hotel - better front desk staff

First let me say the service was beyond outstanding. Sophia at the front desk is an absolute jewel. This hotel beyond lucky to have her. Her colleagues were also outstanding. The breakfast is excellent. Just a short walk from the center of town. I've been traveling to Europe regularly for last 20 years and this may have been my best hotel experience ever. Check that - no maybes about it.

The breakfast wasn't great - the food kept running out and the cutlery was an unusual design which made it almost unusable. And the staff didn't seem very keen to serve coffee. Also the bath screen seal was worn out so the shower water ended up on the bathroom floor.

A most enjoyable stay

We had a very enjoyable stay at The Artist Hotel. The staff were friendly and helpful, the food was excellent and the room very comfortable. It was on a busy road but the hotel itself was very quiet. A bonus was the included hotel smartphone which could be used to make some phone calls and also to find out about the local area. It was quite a tiring walk uphill from the riverside but part could be done on public transport. The taster evening meals should not be missed!

Very nice hotel with lovely staff. A little out of the main part of town, around 10-15 minute walk which is very manageable but keeping in mind that Porto is quite hilly! The hotel itself is comfortable and in a quiet spot. Suggest that if you are driving, ask in advance for directions to the hotel as there were some nearby roadworks which changed the road around the hotel and caused some consternation on our part for arrival. Parking was round the corner at a garage which was fairly reasonable.

Convenient and stylish with interesting concept

Located not far from Metro station, but away from busy streets, the staffing by students from the adjacent tourism college provided an unusual experience. Reception and bar staff were unfailingly pleasant and helpful.
Pity this did not extend to breakfast staff, who did not even offer tea/coffee until prompted. The breakfast buffet was nicely laid out but quantities of some items sparse. Unless you had noted from the room service menu that omelettes etc. could be ordered, there was no indication that this was the case.
The bar food menu, although offering a lunch 'special', was not available in the bar at lunchtime. After being told this menu was available in the restaurant, and being seated, we were then advised that ordering from the bar menu would take much longer than the restaurant set lunch. The food quality and presentation were good when it arrived.
We did not use the restaurant for dinner, so cannot comment on that.

My favorite part of the hotel was the decor, including in the room, the hallways, and the bar. The room was very clean and comfortable. The staff were helpful and friendly. Breakfast was delicious. The hotel, was slightly removed from the city center but was in walking distance and also made for a quiet stay.

Hidden gem, in a quiet street

Once we found the hotel we were greeted by 3 staff members, pleasant surrounds with a beautiful restaurant and quaint bar area. Rooms are spacious and modern. Great couple of days in a very friendly hotel, the degustation night which is run by the tourism students in the hotel restaurant was superb.

Great hotel with a wonderful staff

This was a great little find. While not in the center of Porto, it was an easy walk to the main waterfront (Ribera) district. We only had a 10 minute walk to the Metro and were easily able to navigate the city. While there is no night life right around the hotel, it did make for a nice quiet stay in the evenings. The breakfast was one of the better breakfasts we have had in Europe. I would truly recommend this property.

Conveniently located at the center

Good hotel on the quiet street in the city center. Nice and welcoming stuff of young interns trying hard to make you feel good. The hotel doesn't have pool, fitness center or spa as any big mega-chain with this rating, but if want nice, clean and quiet without a glitz, this hotel is for you.

Great hotel

This hotel is a really good find. It's run by a local hotel school and gives great work based learning for students. The hotel is relatively small in terms of amount of rooms but the room itself was a really good size. The check in/out was reaklly easy and staff were always very helpful - ringing a taxi for us on the way home at an early hour. Breakfast is served downstairs and offers sweet and savoury offerings plus hot items on request. The room is also available for lunch and dinner although we didn't dine in. There is a bar area as well and room service is offered from a small menu.

The only element I would mark the hotel down on is its location. Porto as a city is quite hilly and the hotel is away from the front a little. This does mean that the hotel is nice and quiet so sleeping is never a problem. It just needs a good walk to get there although tram station Bolhao is only a few minutes away.

If I go back to Porto it's certainly somewhere I would stay again.

Ants for breakfast 2 days running

When booking this hotel the reviews all seemed encouraging & the little pop up box highlighted that there was only 1 room remaining so this hurried us into booking. It was strange that we along with maybe 1 or 2 other parties seemed to be the only visitors at the hotel. At breakfast we were outnumbered by the student staff by 3 to 2 and found that although they were very keen to help and serve that they seemed to be watching us closely for the entire meal; this was off putting. Breakfast was an additional extra, having read a couple of reviews saying it was not to be missed we found that this was not the case at all and would rather have not paid the extra and instead ventured out for a bit of variety. Unexpectedly on the final 2 mornings of our stay we found ants crawling around on the breakfast buffet table. This was simply unacceptable, especially considering our stay was in January and it was pretty cold outside. This occurred again the following morning, and completely put me off eating anything from the display. The staff did wipe away the ants, and said 'it happens'. It shouldn't really happen, will not be returning to the hotel!

The bath plug needed adjusting to enable it to fully press in, so perhaps it was assumed that a shower should be taken instead of a bath? Large windows in bathroom as well, unsure of privacy.

The staff at the desk were helpful, they made a good effort in speaking english and offering directions, suggestions for dinners out & loan of umbrella

Lovely place - a short walk from the centre

A really nice hotel to stay at - staffed by students who were just learning so they got a few things not quite right but so keen to learn that you forgive them that. The room itself was large enough for two people but as always in Europe the put the twin beds together- defeats the purpose of twin beds. The staff were very attentive and the hotel was maybe 15 minutes from the centre and another 10 to the Douro river, which is nice. Would recommend this hotel to friends who don't mind that the staff really try but are learning. The bistro was great and well priced as well but be prepared for a long dinner (in winter it's perfect).

Great Central(ish) Hotel

We loved staying here. What we didn't know until we booked in is that it is the training hotel for Portuguese travel and tourism students, with the main college/institute next door. This means that the staff are even more super friendly and eager to please. We arrived a good few hours before check in, but were immediately shown up to our very large room, which we didn't actually pay that much for. The hotel is definitely a boutique hotel as it has such few rooms, but lovely facilities. I would go back and would enthusiastically recommend this to friends and family. While not a 5* hotel in the strictest of terms, we had a lovely stay nonetheless.

City break in Porto

Large rooms for European hotel. The student staff were all professional, enthusiastic, helpful and friendly. We ate in the restaurant 3 nights out of 5 and the bar one night , all the food was well presented, delicious and reasonably priced as was the lunch on the day we flew home. Excellent WiFi connection.
Will definitely book in to The Artist Hotel again on any return trip to Porto.

beautiful, comfy hotel

We were very impressed with The Artist Hotel and Bistro! Although the hotel was a bit out of the way, we were impressed with the always pleasant and accomodating hotel staff and the room was spacious, well decorated and very comfy! Loved the double sinks in the bathroom! The bar was a nice place to relax with a drink after a long day. The wifi was easily accessible in our room. The hotel is about 5 blocks away from one of the main shopping streets but a bit of a walk to the hopping Ribera touristy shops and eateries along the river. Taxis are easily found and inexpensive, as long as you don't mind being driven over the speed limit! We would stay here again in a flash.

Great apartment and very good value for money

Very pleased with this apartment. Nicely kitted out and really roomy for 2 people. Great kitchen/lounge area with good kitchen facilities with a separate bedroom. Light and airy with high ceilings. Beds were a little soft for my liking and were not of a high standard but absolutely fine. All looked fairly new. Great shower. Fantastic location and although right in the heart of Ribeira was not not noisy at all at night or early morning. Would def recommend over having a hotel any time. Could easily nip out for croissants in the morning and surrounded by places to eat and drink.

Excellent hotel in Porto

Stayed for three nights. Room was very spacious and comfortable and cleaned immaculately each day. The hotel is quite central and also close to a Metro station, so it was also easy to get to Dragao stadium, the beach and the airport. I had read some reviews which were critical of the staff, however in my experience the staff were uniformly excellent, with several going beyond what could reasonably be expected in order to improve our stay.

Small city break

The hotel is not far from the centre is Porto and within walking distance from the metro line from the airport. Porto is a hilly city so you have to be prepared to walk up and down hills wherever you stay.
