The location is wonderful right on the seafront, with a car park. The property itself could do with modernising throughout. The bar area vibe doesn’t match the style of the building.
My room wasn’t particularly clean the headboard had dust and the tv was covered in dust and the remote was sticky and dirty. The shower didn’t have hot water.
We didn’t have a comfortable sleep as the bed was hard and lumpy.
If the rooms had a refresh it would be a great place to stay.

i booked 4 single rooms for 4 guests which also included a late check out ,
even though i wasn't staying. i was woken up by the hotel giving me a early wake up call at 3am !!
in reference to the hotel
windows were draughty and only single glazing
my guests who needed the late check out was woken up by cleaners trying to get in the room
overall experience hotel clean but probably wouldnt recommend

I need hair dryer and they need a £20.00 deposit to use their hair dryer.refunded next day..I am 69 yrs. old pensioner and I don't have extra money. ( it really needs urgent updating ) Huge drain pipe across end to end walls-NOT hidden.Kettle no socket next to the coffee table... so I have to drag the chair near the socket so I can plug the the kettle.They told me one of the best rooms they had.

The dirtiest hotel room I’ve ever stepped into. It took all of 10 minutes before we had to leave. The entire area of the building our room was in stank of mold and cigarettes, the window barely opening to relieve the smell. The room and corridor were caked in dust, and strings of cobwebs were hanging down over the bed. The entire atmosphere of the place felt unsavoury and unsafe. I told all this to someone at the front desk as we left and they were completely unresponsive, stating there was no manager to speak to. Horrible experience

Room smelt of sewerage. Hallways smelt of weed! Beds very uncomfortable and not even as the floor wasn’t even. Walls paper thin could hear next door snoring as if they were y next to me. Don't bother with breakfast, it's toast, ham and cheese ! Even a reduced rate its not great.

When you get inside the hotel interior is okay. We ask for a ground room since we got kids and NO LIFT he said it was full. so he gave us the third floor. The room smell mouldy and when I woke up Ive got bitten by bed bugs. The bed is awful and it wasn’t even clean. the room heating is not working.

Honest star ratings, however it is a budget hotel so I wasn’t expecting the ritz.
If you’re the sort of traveller that watches “3 in a bed” and gets your magnifying glass out, this one isn’t for you.

Car park was secure enough but parking bays didn’t exist and I got blocked in.

Reception area was alright, staff helpful, and the communal areas have had an update but I didn’t really use.
Happy points removed at being a solo female put on the ground floor, but I’m glad I didn’t get put upstairs as I heard those rooms are in worse condition.

Room was very dated. And apart from the fact that the bed linen was clean and bathroom had clearly seen some bleach before I got there, could use a proper deep clean.
Curtain didn’t close properly, I had to manoeuvre the chair to help me obtain some privacy from the car park. But we got there.

Room was very cold, but it’s single plane glass in autumn/winter (going to be cold).
Didn’t feel it once in bed (just didn’t want to get out).
Shower got hot after a while of running water, pressure was not great.

No wifi

Pretty sure they used to make adverts warning people about fires plugging gangs into gangs back in the 90s but this was the wiring around my room.

Telly had streaming options only, but tbh, these aren’t the sort of rooms you stay in longer than you need.

I wasn’t there for the amenities, only to rest between days at an event and the room did the job.

Staff very friendly. lounge, reception and bar very clean and refurbished. Unfortunately the room let it down with lots of damage to the walls and the bathroom including past damp leaks and previous guests hair everywhere. Free WiFi in room with smart tv and sea view within very close walking distance to the town was a bonus though, was fine for what we needed the room for.

The staff were very friendly and helpful carrying our bag to our room. Sadly the room needs redecorating and the furniture was very tired, the carpet was very badly worn and needs replacing. There was no mattress protector on the bed. The bathroom is in dire need of updating and the plug in the sink did not fit the plug hole. The parking was a bonus though.

I have reserved a room with sea view , the window was not properly locked and in state of repairs , the room facilities were ordinary and the toiletries were off very low quality. When I reserved the room it was shown on Hotel.com website that they cater full breakfast but in actual they have a so called continental breakfast options , that included very low quality food for eg the bread wasnt fresh , croissants were so dull , the mixed fruit was tin packs opened in bowl and even low quality cereals , the staff working in kitchen couldnt understand a word of English she directed me to main office to talk to them where a half asleep man comes from a back room and said its continental only and you will be served what you have , you can raise a complaint later. This kind of service when you receive what you expect from customer. Not Recommended at all.

Hotel was convenient for the tunnel and is an impressive building but unfortunately it is showing its age and lack of investment. The room had damp patches on the walls and shows its age. However the bed was comfortable, which to be fair suited my needs as I only needed a place to sleep and as long as you aren’t expecting a lot then The Carlton will meet your needs. I am not ‘slating’ the hotel as this is someone’s livelihood but if they could win the lottery or have the money to invest into this lovely building in the location it sits it would be fabulous. The hotel isn't modern, but it's pleasant. Everything is close by: restaurants, shops, and a bus station. The view from the window is beautiful, and the beach is a 10-15-minute walk away. The staff was very helpful.

One minor drawback was the room service: we had to ask for fresh towels or toilet paper even though someone was in our room every day because shampoo sachets were left behind.

1/ The car is terrible, unsafe and with poor lighting.
2/ The hotel especially around the reception area, decor is dark and in desperate need of refurbishment.
3/ Although the beds were relatively comfortable and clean , the beds themselves were in pretty poor condition.
The bedroom was in poor condition, carpet in serious need replacement.
4/ The bathroom really needs refurbishment. The shower unit is not properly fitted, there’s no handrails to hold whilst stepping in and out of the shower.
5/ I paid for breakfast, yet it was only Continental, no cooked breakfast.
Only the staff was the hotel’s saving grace.

For over £100 per night. The hotel owners need to step up or move out!

Very old and tired decor with strong musty scented carpets. Staircase leading to the second floor worryingly leaning towards the inside. As we entered the bedroom there were flies flying around, the fire alarm covered with a piece of black fabric wrapped around and one of the windows had cracked glass.
Again one side of the bedroom floor was significantly leaning on one side.
We returned to the hotel at 1am to find the main door locked and no one available at reception to answer the bell. Only when we phoned we were let in.
I couldn’t wait for the morning and check in time to arrive.
We will never book this hotel ever again.

The beds were broken, my daughter fell off the bed due to it being completely sunken on one side. The showers do not work. The TVs do not work. The TV remote had melted including the batteries inside. The room smelled of smoke. Not happy! I have tried to speak to someone about it and couldn't get through. We will never visit again.

Not the most salubrious of hotels. My room (103) had wallpaper that looked like a cross between a greasy spoon kitchen and a prison cell. Shower temperature fluctuated constantly. Arrived late and left early so I only really needed a bed, toilet and shower. Breakfast was adequate but nothing special. Car park was full but due to shoddy parking, meant I couldn’t even get in - had to use pay and display at rear of the hotel which was free overnight until 8am.. If you really just want somewhere to lay your head for an early channel crossing then go for it but don’t expect anything else.

The hotel is in a very sorry state. We had no hot water in the bathroom room and also we had a leak in the sink. We we mentioned this to the receptionist they said they had only turned on the hot water an hour ago (at 7 pm???) and it would take another 20 mi s to get into temperature. It never did. We had to had a cold shower. The mattress was bad too.
When we arrived a family was complaining about something else, which is always a bad sign.

The Hotel Carlton is very disappointing to say the least! We had 3 family rooms and were permitted to take our small dogs despite them having a no dog policy (extra charge of £30!) Check in was unwelcoming, surroundings dull, old and grubby.. The bedrooms were scruffy old and grubby.. the curtains (rags at the windows) were hanging off the poles…Rubbish was overflowing in the ladies toilet and the stair well was stacked with unused furniture…A very old unloved hotel in a great position - don’t be tempted !!!!

Not very clean at all. Dead bugs on the window sill. Shower was not warm and unusable given the temperature and poor water flow. The toilet seat wasn't even attached. Unfortunately we checked in at 9pm, climbed the three flights of stairs with the luggage and just accepted this is their ‘standard’ or care for the hotel. Wouldn’t recommend staying here.

After a 10 minute wait the receptionist arrived back at reception (believe he was also manning the bar). Check in was smooth, no room on car park to park but advised we could park elsewhere for free if we left before 8am.
Lift wasnt working so a few flights of stairs to the 3rd floor.
The room itself was clean but dated, however, the bathroom hadnt been cleaned as there was still a large poo in the toilet.

I booked this hotel for myself and daughter after our long day in France
We arrived and had trouble checking in when we got to our room well I would rather stayed on the street the room was very dirty tv didn’t work main fire door wouldn’t shut properly their was water leaks all over the walls
We heard the police had been called and someone had been arrested and lot of shouting didn’t feel safe as door wouldn’t shut so we had to put chair up against the door so nobody could get in very thin walls as so we could hear the neighbours snoring very noisy outside
Very very disappointed we had a 3 hour drive home the next day we ended up leaving at 3 am as couldn’t stand anymore did not feel safe at all

It is a basic hotel, but when the shower curtain falls on you while you have a cold shower, as the hot water was not getting hot, because it is not attached to the wall, instead it is a twist one that doesn't stay. Tiles missing off the wall, no flooring in the bathroom, only 1 light in the bedroom, uneven floor in the bedroom and to top it off, to advertise you have a lift then being told there isn't one is not acceptable. Walked up 6 flights of stairs to get to our room with someone who was in a boot after fracturing a foot. Not good.

Upon arrival I found the hotel entrance to be very dark but clean.
Our room appeared clean but definitely needs a revamp. The bed mattresses don’t fit into the bed frame so was lop sided and had springs sticking up. Only one pillow was provided so I asked for another which was quickly suppled.
The shower was either freezing cold or very hot so couldn’t shower.
Overall one night stay ok but I couldn’t stay any longer than this. the hotel rooms need an update

We booked an overnight stay in order to catch an early ferry. Refurbishment has been done in reception and the bar area.
The rooms look tired and stuffy, unable to open the window more than three inches. The bathroom door kept swinging open as there was no latch or lock on the door.
For what it was,the price was ok.

For the price it’s hard to be too critical but the decor and building were tired, there was a stale smell of green and our mattress was past its best, if you need an overnight that’s affordable with a bar and pool table and parking then it’s hard to beat

Never again

Shower was terible had to run for ages before any hot came through then it really hot. It says rooms cleaned daily but ours wasnt touched. The sink leaked so everytime you washed your hands you had water on the floor.

We sat outside and the smell of drugs is awful.

People sat in the doorway smoking so the smell was coming inside.

Easy access to everything

Needed 2 nights away from work and home life and choose folkestone as love the beach .... The Carlton is 10 min walk from the station and 10 min walk from he beach .
Shops are also about a 10 min walk
Hotel was clean and staff were friendly
Room was comfortable and had a sea view
I didn't feel uncomfortable being on my own and would definitely visit again

Good convienent location, helpful staff, the lift being out of order was annoying as I had heavy luggage.
