Stayed at this hotel in Provenza, Medellín and absolutely loved it. The location couldn’t be better—right in the heart of all the restaurants and bars, yet still felt completely safe. The room was small but had everything I needed, spotlessly clean, and the staff was truly awesome. Highly recommend!

Room with no window

I was only here for one night before flying out early the next morning. The hotel location is spectacular. However my room didn’t have a window and was very basic. The bathroom was small and the AC blasts on the bed all night.

Hotel Kartaxa has good qualities

The Hotel Kartaxa in Cartagena is a charming boutique hotel that offers a blend of historical charm and modern comfort What I liked most about it was: 1) location -it’s situated in the old city, close to historic sites, restaurants, events, nightlife, but also accessible to beaches and other trips. Its closeness to Plaza de San Diego is a must 2) Comfortable and quite accommodations with nice amenities 3) Beautiful infrastructure, located in a refurbished historical building with a primer retreats as library, swimming pool and solarium 4) Excellent service and friendly staff 5) Good cost benefit

My favorite hotel in Cartagena!

Its a very cute hotel on a very peaceful street but half block to the Bovedas, traditional artcraft market and the city walk which you can walk on top around them. Very clean, professional staff, they will help you with anything they can. There breakfast is a la carte and is included, excelent.

It's quit cozy cleaned hotel with polite stuff, but when we called asking recommendation for transportation from airport to hotel, they send the car and charged 100 000 pesos and it was ridiculous because taxi cost 25000 everywhere. on a way back I payed 25000 pesos for taxi So don't ask hotel reception about transport.

We loved our stay at Hotel Kartaxa. It is just on the outskirts of the noise in San Diego plaza but it is also just a quick walk to the plaza. The hotel staff was friendly and accommodating. They arrange anything you need such as taxis and day trips. Breakfast was delicious and not just toast and bagels, real breakfast. We will definitely return to Cartagena and when we do, we will stay here. Gracias to the entire staff for making our stay there perfect !!!!!

The driver we booked thru the hotel did not show at the airport, later claimed he waited for us 45 mins. We had paid for 2 beds in each room, but one had a queen bed - they couldnt resolve it until the nexg day. Our air conditioning didnt work and they were hesitant to help. Finally they brought up a new remote which resolved the issue.
The breakfast staff was wonderful althouhh options were very limited.

Great location in the Walled City. Beautiful hotel that had been renovated- it used to be a house. The bathroom is very small and the bed and pillows are very hard, but the staff there is so helpful and friendly. Would definitely stay there again.

Very nice hotel! I really liked the style; very cozy and super NICE staff. The only thing is that there was a hole in the roof of the room so the night that rained, the room's floor got wet but I should say that it was nothing major though. Still, I definitely recommend this hotel boutique.

Very bad experience!!

Let me start out by saying I am a very very open minded traveler that has never left a negative review for anyone. This trip however warrants a bad review. It started with booking a king bed and arriving to find a double...usually no problem but not what I paid for...we asked to move and after some haggling they said they could move is the next day and there would be no additional charge...well it’s nice to know I won’t be charged extra for what I already paid for!! Then the real fun begins...new room, king bed...all looks good until we go to use the toilet...no el flusho!! I went downstairs to tell the staff that the toilet wouldn’t flush and they handed me a plunger...nice gesture but I came to go on vacation not be a plumber...and to make matters worse my wife and I picked up a case of travelers diarrhea. After trying for an hour to plunge the toilet with no luck I just went to sleep in a room that now smelled like an outhouse at a football game. Next morning I resumed negotiations to change rooms...no go...they sent a plumber who made it look as if the toilet flushed...he said don’t put paper in the toilet...hunan waste only...throw paper in can next to toilet and it will work...he was wrong...by now my wife and I are rapid fire pooping from the food sickness and the toilet continues to fill with you know what. Back downstairs to complain and suddenly nobody speaks a lick of English and can’t understand that my room smells like an outhouse.

Nice historic theme hotel steps to Plz San Diego

Nice Historic Theme Hotel steps away from Plaza San DIego, Univ. of Bella Artes, Hotel Sofiel, and much more. The staff is very friendly, the rooms very clean, unfortunately the Pool was out of order..

The hotel has rooms themed after artist, writers, etc... with reading books of those historic individuals, and it makes you feel that you are back in those historic times.

After a slightly rocky check-in with wifi issues in our room, the hotel staff demonstrated excellent customer service to try to make our stay as comfortable as possible. The hotel itself is extremely well located in the walled city along a beautiful street. The beds were comfortable and the suite spacious.

Great location close to the city walls

Hotel is located in a safe and quiet part of El Centro inside the walled city. Easy to walk to most places or get a taxi to the beaches of Bocagrande. Airport is not far away. Friendly staff and decent breakfast. Many good bars and restaurants nearby around San Diego Plaza. Cartagena is gorgeous and photogenic.

Overpriced and smelly

We picked this hotel from a handful of similar looking ones solely because it said on the hotels.com site that it offered late checkout for a fee of $US40 and we needed one. Straight after booking, I emailed the hotel directly to confirm this, but received no response. I also asked the hotel I was staying in at the time to call and speak to them and confirm that was alright, which they did. However, when we arrived they wouldn't confirm we could have a late check-in and said they couldn't tell us until the day. I wasn't at all happy with this and had to ask three separate people to sort it out, wasting loads of my time and I feel it is really dishonest of them to advertise this to get people to book the hotel when they don't want to offer it. In addition, the room had a tiny bathroom, with no fan or window and consequently it smelled awful and made the whole room smell awful. The room wasn't particularly clean (all the sheets were stained when we checked in) yet the cleaners had left an envelope next to our bed with TIPS written on it in capitals and then highlighted in yellow just in case we didn't understand they wanted tips (which we didn't leave as they weren't very good; every day taking towels and not replacing them, which was hugely inconvenient).

We paid about £110 a night for this hotel. We'd stayed in Cartagena the previous week in a much nicer hotel that was about £70 (we couldn't get a room or we'd have gone back there).

Beautiful hotel - accommodating and friendly staff

The location of the hotel is really great, it's quiet, but close to some great restaurants and a grocery if needed. The staff at the front desk spoke English very well as I spoke zero Spanish. They were very helpful and even upgraded us to a larger room. Our air conditioner broke after a couple of days and they very quick to relocate us to a new room.

Let me start with the pros: great location, good breakfast included in rate. staff was generally friendly and helpful
Cons: room was extremely noisy especially one night where there was a concert nearby that went well past 2 am (we may as well have been at the concert it was so loud and so forget about sleeping), water pressure and hot water were almost non-existent at most times making showering near impossible, our room had an opaque window separating our main room from the neighboring room's bathroom so whenever they turned on their bathroom light it would illuminate our room with no way of blocking the light (we were in room 309).
Bottom line: if you're looking for the hotel basics like a place to sleep and shower I suggest you look elsewhere

There was no hot water coming out of the shower and hotel made no attempt to fix it. They seem to think that's okay and normal. They're wrong. For the price of the room, I expect nice warm showers and not have to listen to a running toilet all night long. Not too much to ask for. Would not stay there again!

We had a wonderful time exploring the walled city during our stay at Hotel Kartaxa. The room was quite small but it didn't matter because we spent most of our time outside. The staff was really helpful and made us feel very welcome. I would recommend this hotel and perhaps suggest booking a higher room category.

Great location in the old city, near to all attractions. Hotel itself is OK for the money you pay. Pretty clean. Old but nice.
Breakfast is very limited and service is VERY slow. You need to ask couple of time to get re-fill of coffee or anything else, since waitresses just forget. Staff English is very limited, but they are all very friendly and want to help you.

Our shower didn't have a door or curtain on it. Every time we showered, the whole bathroom would get soaked. It was VERY weird. The hot water was cold and the cold water was freezing. We also didn't have any windows in our room. I thought we paid for the \"Supreme\" room but it was a glorified motel room with nice blankets. The air conditioning was nice and the room was clean. We also got arranged for a trip to the islands from the front desk. Paid double what we should've. The front desk mentioned that lunch would be included. The food was old, dry, and left us both sick afterwards. Pretty disappointing.

Comfortable and Convenient to Walled City Sites

The hotel is on a quiet street between a small plaza and Las Bovedas, which makes it easy to get to at all times. Staff are friendly and helpful, although with varying degrees of spoken English skills - some basic knowledge of Spanish will help visitors. Rooms are very clean and a bit spare, but the bathrooms are very good and the bed was perfect. The air conditioning worked perfectly (a blessing in that humid city), and the hotel generator kicked in immediately when there was a sudden power blackout in the area one evening. The second floor pool is small, but the lounge area is attractive and comfortable. The rooftop lounge area provides a good view of the city and is also comfortable for lounging. The only two concerns I should mention are (1) the stairs, which are a bit steep and might be too cumbersome for some walkers, and (2) the school directly behind the hotel opens at 6:30am Monday-Friday, with lengthy loudspeaker announcements and the roar of hundreds of children playing. Kartaxa is a \"lifestyle\" hotel, so one should not expect all services found at much more upscale hotels in the city.

Cannot beat the location and charm!

This hotel is in a wonderful location and it is easy to walk in the old walled city and to nearby Getsemani. San Diego square is just down the street and it has nice restaurants and an active night life with live music, outside seating, and fun street performers cycling through. Given that it is a very old building (like all of the historic buildings/houses in the city), they have done a nice job of converting this into an appealing little hotel. Our room was surprisingly small when we first saw it, but we got used to it and it was sparkling clean with a comfortable bed and nice linens and pillows. We did catch sight of several larger rooms. It was nice to wake up to birds chirping and it was very quiet and relaxing. There was a small room safe but did not receive instructions on how to use it. The housekeeping staff was very honest and didn't take my tips until I figured out they needed to be placed in a little envelope pre-addressed to them. The staff was pleasant, formal and spoke good English. There is a tiny, tiled pool. There was confusion at check-out over what we were supposed to pay. We booked and paid through Expedia but there was a request to pay some sort of 'insurance' that was later removed and they initially asked us to pay the room bill again but all was sorted out. It is a small boutique hotel and a lot of their paperwork seemed manual so we remained flexible. Overall it was a charming Cartagena experience and the location couldn't have been better.

I made the mistake of trying to compare Cartagenas hotels to hotels ive stayed in like Las Vegas or Cancun where I had a suite or ocean views which is unfair. Since my first visit to Cartagena in November 2015 and a better understanding of the area I appreciated what I had. The room I had was small but that wasnt a negative. I did not know on my first visit hot water really isnt a necessity for Cartagena residents but this hotel has hot water and that was a plus. I understand that recently the city is changing to provide hot water. The AC works well, so well I would actually have to cut it off as I would get cold. I liked being able to go to the rooftop to relax in a lounge chair and there is a pool on the second floor. There is a restaurant on site and the breakfast they provide, omg! Absolutely 5-star quality. You order from the menu but first are provided a plate of fruit, coffee and or juice if you want and the taste was excellent. When I went to the restaurant late afternoon Danilo and Aeonoa (sorry if i misspelled your names) were an absolute joy to talk with and they were so helpful and kind. I introduced Danilo to my drink of choice he never made before and it came out even better the 2nd time around :) Everyone was really helpful and kind except one female at the front desk at night but I did not bother to get her name and despite that one person, I would stay here again.

The room we got was small, dirty and had a humidity problem- hence it was sprayed with a strong scent to cover it up. Bathroom was not clean, and place is loud. Would not stay here ever again, not even for free. Location is great- very chill neighborhood inside the walled city.

Stayed for 4 nights. The Pros were that it was in the old city and near to many plazas, restaurants and sights. Hotel staff was very friendly, accommodating and courteous. Could walk nearly anywhere. Cons were an non-air-conditioned bathroom, Noisy AC in room, so-so food at breakfast. Very small pool. Roof-to views were limited and not much to see.

Breakfast that is included is good, you can have it delivered to the room. The staff was all very helpful and enthusiastic and most of them spoke great English, too! The hotel is just a half a block from the Bóvedas and the Wall, which is nice 1. So you can check them out 2. If you get turned around in the city, ask anyone which direction the bóvedas are they can help you out. I would recommend staying there!

Old City - colonial charm - amazing service

Great stay for a night before checking into a hotel on the beach with my partner...the checkin and overall service was great! The restaurant is better for breakfast only, but the staff really are wonderful. The hotel is authentic colonial property, but well maintained. It is small but rooms are spacious. Had a great time and was wonderful for exploring the old city. The staff made no uncomfortable feeling for two hombres arriving as a couple, showing a cosmopolitan openness. They were willing to do anything to make guests comfortable, bringing bottled water free of charge when asked on Ice.

Wonderful time in a comfy hotel in old Cartagena

Very lovely stay. We got lucky with our room, which was a top floor corner unit with views of rooftops and the mountains in the distance. Very clean. AC was a bit wonky, but worked. Hot water was available but a bit inconsistent. Swimming pool was small but well maintained. Cannot beat the location - just perfect. We walked all over the old town and Gestemini. Overall great experience.

Nice boutique hotel right in the Walled City

I was welcomed by a lovely, totally bilingual receptionist who was very helpful. When I got to the room, it was thankfully equipped with really good air conditioning - essential in Cartagena in August, where it is very hot and humid.

Breakfast involved fruit, a choice of local cooked fare and a hot and a cold drink. The staff were also very helpful in arranging a tour for me.

Nice clean place with friendly staff

Decorated with pictures and stories of past writes, coupled with period furniture, this hotel gives a relaxed literary feel. The friendly staff is very helpful, rooms are clean, and the cost, as compared to other hotels in the old city, is very reasonable.

Convenient and cozy

Confusion at check in was resolved but unnecessary and unwelcome after long trip. Staff friendly enough. Rooms clean, beds comfortable and good tv. WIFI was good, strong. Breakfast was nothing great. Location is tops and it is welcoming.

Nice and Quiet

I went with my wife for 4 days and stayed at the Kartaxa. I was concerned about some reviews saying about the small rooms with no windows, but I was lucky and got a corner room (very big) with nice lighting. We found it very nice although the bathroom was quite small.

The hotel is in calle de las bovedas, close to the wall but far from noise. The only thing you can hear at night are the horses so it is not next to big restaurants or bars. Plaza San Diego is just 1 block away and even main streets or restaurants are farther it is nothing more than a 10 min walk which is nice because of the beauty of the walled city.

Breakfast is great at La Comunion Restaurant, you have 4 options to choose from (every day is the same menu), but you get fruit, coffee and juice plus the main dish that could be eggs, arepas, pancakes, etc

Disappointing Cartagena Hotel

Very disappointing experience at Hotel Kartaxa. Had to request towels and the room to be clean everyday during my stay. The room was very small for the price . The breakfast is very bad , I recommend eating breakfast at one of the nearby cafes.

A hotel in transition?

Apparently, the Hostal San Diego recently changed management. There was a lot of construction going on during our stay, with the accompanying noise, dust, and clutter. It didn't appear that the infrastructure was all that great to begin with. The staff, however,we're unfailingly helpful and friendly. And the location was very good. We would not, however recommend staying here until major improvements are made.

In terms of location, the hotel is excellent. It is only a 15 min.walk to the Historic centre. The hotel is clean and the service was good. The staff wete friendly and helpful. The full breakfast is very good and is included in the price. I was given a room on the main floor. I don't think guests should be given rooms on this floor. Mine had no windows and a hole in the bathroom exposing pipes. It was not very uplifting. At check out their credit card machine wasn't working and I spent 25 min going with a staff to three different bank machines in the surrounding neighbourhood with none of them working. Ensure that you have cash to pay for your room.

The accommodations are very basic. The rooms are small and there is no hot water. None of that really mattered too much to me. The staff is excellent and the location is perfect. Free breakfast is included which is also a plus. Good pick for a short stay in the walled city.

Great location in Cartagena Old City

Really nice location within Cartagena old city, hardly one block from great shopping market for traditional crafts (Las Bovedas). Rooms clean, free breakfast included, A/C works well in the rooms. Just two blocks from the best plaza for open air dining (Plaza San Diego)...great and safe vibe, good food with a variety of selections, much less touristy than the other larger plazas! Only complaint was that their credit card machine wasn't working when we arrived, but we were able to work it out by paying at another business which somehow got transferred to the hotel. Small nuisance, not a big deal.

They have really good intentions, but there was only one router for the whole hotel and the wifi recepcion was terrible. They should place another router. I dont know why but, even if I went to a place close to their existing router, the speed was really slow anyways. Also their machone to swipe credit cards did not have connection with the bank so I had to pay in another store nearby from a family member. The good thing is that they are in a remodeling process and they are going to have a pool very soon. I talked to the GM and sugested for another router and fixing the credicard machine. He told me that he was going to do that, just in case he has not done that, call before to verify those items conditions. Overal it was nice and they are very friendly!

Quiet. Excellent front desk, friendly and helpful. Breakfast typical, nothing special. Rock hard pillows. Hopefully, credit card payment system will be improved. When my departure was delayed due to weather, they allowed me a late checkout. Very much appreciated.

The hotel is located in a great neighborhood, with plenty of good restaurants nearby, some of the cities best are around the corner,. The room was comfortable and right for the price we paid. It was great value for the location.

There are no windows in the room, which is quite normal for these buildings. But it means it is OK to sleep, but not to stay too long. The shower had no hot water. Wifi and AC was good. TV in the room. First the bed didn't look very clean, but after we asked for new pillow covers it was all in good order. Breakfast is not super, but OK. Personnel is very very vriendly and helpful. The hotel itselfs looks very authentic and is good maintained.

Great service, definitely has potential!

I had a great stay in Cartagena de Indias. The staff here were probably the friendliest I've ever seen in a hostel or hotel. The only thing I think would need improvement is the bed (it felt like i was sleeping on a slab of concrete haha), and the shower needed some minor repairs, and only had cold water. Otherwise, the place was very accomodating, and the hostal even looked after my luggage since I had a late departure on my check out day. Very happy with the stay, and would recommend in a heartbeat!
