A charming stay in the heart of Lisbon. The Independente blends heritage character with a relaxed, social atmosphere that makes it ideal for travellers who value both comfort and community. We stayed in a six-bed dorm with shared bathrooms — everything was clean, well-kept, and thoughtfully maintained.

The breakfast was generous and great value for the price, and the staff were genuinely friendly and welcoming, always ready with local tips or a smile. With its beautiful building, excellent location overlooking the Miradouro, and a lively yet respectful vibe, it’s a place that makes you feel part of Lisbon rather than just visiting it.

Very small elevator, like a closet so if you have lots of luggage or mobility issues, be wary

We liked its excellent location in the popular Bairro Alto district, across the street from the city lookout spot, Miradouro de Sáo Pedro de Alcántara. They did have a small elevator, but then we had to descend and ascend five steps each, once we reached our floor (one of our suitcases was especially heavy, so this was difficult). There was an espresso maker, but I needed reception to come show me how to use it. Then, after the first night, the coffees were not replenished, so I had to go ask for more, and even then they were out of regular coffee (only decaf). The room was small and comfortable. The desk was open 24/7, so that was nice.

The room was cool and quirky, large and the bedding nice and clean. The shower was old and leaky but the overall theme is that it’s old and quirky and some things are not pristine. The shutters weee great for blocking out sunlight for a nice dark room to sleep in.
We did have an unexpected person try to get in our room one night and fortunately we had the chain on the door, so they couldn’t get the door fully opened. It was a bit unsettling that there was a security issue. The rooftop bar was cool (although a bit pricey) the location was great too and the breakfast was simple but tasty.

If you are a tall or XL person, it is diffcult to stand &/or sit on the toilet with the door closed, as the stalls are very small. The washing machine is convenient as it adds detergent, but the dryer ran for 1 hour and left my clothes very damp. There was no heat, despite selecting the highest heat setting. Also there are little (human) mice that ate 1/2 of my food in the refrigerator, despite it being labeled with my name and check out date. I guess they were in need of a meal.

This lovely building offers an amazing view. I chose a lower bunk bed but i was put in the in the middle, but there’s really no privacy. The pictures made me think the beds were set with privacy curtains , but they weren’t. There was a conversation area, but it didn’t work. Breakfast is okay, but it’s rationed. I tried to eat an extra egg, but they wouldn’t let me. It’s good value money, but I won’t be returning.

Conveniently located but female front desk staff looked blasé (maybe I'll be being in the epicenter of touristic Lisboa but whatever, the male receptionnists were cool). Also not a fan of the dorm beds sketchy \"stairs\" and black mould in the room and bathrooms?!

Breakfast was very cool tho. The breakfast staff are the loveliest of the bunch. Super cute garden patio too!

Lovely old building across the street from one of the best lookouts in Lisbon. Although mostly a hostel, very worth taking a 3rd floor solo room. If you need to leave early, breakfast will not be an option (nor will the elevator).

Staff was helpful and the breakfast included was delightful and delicious. I would stay there again and again and I hope that I get the chance! This hotel was so cool! Really charming decor inside, and the location was great. The breakfast spread was very good every morning, and the rooftop bar was so much fun. They held our bags before we could check in and after we checked out; Shakira was so helpful during check-in! Will definitely be staying here again when I come back to Lisbon and would definitely recommend to someone else.

The concierge staff went above and beyond. I enjoyed the suite immensely and the dorm room reminded me of younger freer days! Superbly located near stores the best restaurants and a short stroll to the Botanical Gardens which was free from 10am to 1pm on Sundays.oh and ARSENAL Women WON the Champions League!!

Encore mieux qu’on ne l’espérait ! Très bel hôtel, soigneusement décoré, très bien placé. Le personnel est très serviable et sympathique. Le buffet petit déjeuner très bon également. Nous avons testé un soir le restaurant de l’hôtel : une tuerie. Lisbonne est une fête à ciel ouvert et les bâtiments sont anciens : sans surprise la rue était bruyante (nous l’avions vu dans les commentaires sur différents hôtels). L’hôtel met à disposition des boules quies, ce qui est très pratique. 10/10 pour ce séjour.

Hotel was right across the street from a great outdoor plaza with tapas and drinks. Easy to walk to restaurants and shopping. Suite was lovely and everyone at the hotel was friendly and helpful! This was our second stay here - we stayed 5 years ago, so it was just as good as last time.

I think we had the same superior room which overlooked the road. Great size, very bright and airy (it had 2 large floor to ceiling windows), and nice bathroom (amazingly powerful shower)

This hotel is quite quirky, so if you like one of those non descript hotels that are clean and modern without any character, then this is probably not the place for you. If you want somewhere full of character, with friendly helpful staff and great location, this is the place for you.

We like our hotels to feel like they reflect the country we are staying in.

One thing I would like to suggest - a toaster in the breakfast room.

Fantastic atmosphere

The hotel is located on a hill, where there is one of the official viewpoints, in a fashionable district. If you want to feel the atmosphere of Portugal, you must take the opportunity to stay overnight in this facility. We really liked the unique atmosphere of this place. We had a room with a wonderful view of Lisbon and enjoyed breakfast served in a very nice restaurant on the top of the building.

A very nice place in an area of Lisbon that has a lot of night life and dining options. Though it's not right in the center of Lisbon's attractions it is very easily reached by buses and trollies that make the uphill location easily accessible. Breakfast is served in the main restaurant and has lots of choices and a cooked to order option. I would stay again!

This hotel is absolutely lovely. Historic and charming, well located, and with a fantastic staff. It was my boyfriend’s birthday during our stay and we arrived to find a bottle of Cava (sparkling wine) and some macarons and cake, with a nice little note. The included breakfast was just what we needed to start our days, and the area was full of great restaurants and bars, including the hotel’s own rooftop. Just out front of the hotel is a miradouro (lookout) with a great view and lots of little vendors and artists. It was noisy at times but the windows included heavy duty shutters that blocked sufficient noise. We will absolutely return to the Independente when we return to Lisbon.

Internet access terrible. No lights in hallway leading to room so a small step not visible posing a hazard. Staff at check in and breakfast room very friendly and helpful. Not so for other staff: The women at door to roof top bar made no attempt to call upstairs to ask that elevator door be shut so we could use the elevator. The bartender was rude when asked what kind of wine was offered as the welcome drink replying “ guys it’s a welcome drink”. While we are grateful for it, it would not have been difficult to indicate if it’s a dry wine, or the region etc. if known. Would not be able to recommend this hotel.

The rooms had a rustic charm but bunks where sandwiched together, some rooms had three story high bunks with no railings, and there were no privacy curtains or the storage boxes where not suitable for suitcases even a travel one. I found the rooms over crowded.

This was a fun and funky hostel, but our private room was very nice. It was roomy, had a small but good bathroom and a comfortable bed. The lighting could be improved. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The breakfast buffet was very nice. The location was very convenient with many good dining options very nearby. You can pick up an Tuk-Tuk across the street. It was a 10-15 Euro ride to and from the airport on Uber.

The good: This hostel has preserved some of the grand architectural details from its former life, lending it a lot of charm. The included breakfast was good. The staff were nice, and it was clean. The small plaza across the street from the hostel has gorgeous views of Lisbon.

For the less-good: I was in a dorm room, and they really ought to add privacy curtains to the bunks. When you have 8 people coming and going, a curtain really makes it more private and cuts down on the light pollution. Also, I arrived quite early in the morning, and while they were able to stow my luggage, they wouldn’t allow me to use the shower until after check-in. Guys, it’s a communal shower accessed from the hallway - I wouldn’t have to go into anyone’s room, I wouldn’t be creating extra work for anyone, I’m staying at yourhostel for several days, you have my ID and credit card… just let me wash the plane grease off, ok? What’s the issue?

Great stay! Hostel was quirky, staff very friendly, breakfast excellent and very reasonably priced.
Our room was nice with very tall ceilings and a coffee machine.
The only problem we had was with the TV which didn’t work, the staff did try to sort it out but to no avail. We classed this as only a minor problem as we were out for most of the day anyway.
We would definitely come back here again in the future.

I was already excited for Lisbon because I really enjoyed it the brief moment I was there in February. I would’ve never thought just how amazing my time here would be. I owe a lot of that to the hostel staff here, who was friendly, welcoming, and great conversationalists. They were there to answer all questions, have a quick chat, and be a familiar face to talk to.
On top of that, this was simply one of the most beautiful hostels I’ve been to in my one month vacation throughout Europe. The views were amazing from Bairro Alto, the decoration was carefully curated and thought out, and the lobby was breathtaking.

My only qualms were small things, and they were already working on it, which was just a brief issue with the door to my floor, and whether or not there was going to be a light for the room. They were receptive to my concerns and transparent about working to fix the problems.

All in all, this was my favorite hostel, and I’d recommend this place to friends in a heartbeat.

We liked the location of this hotel but if you have a car, parking can be an issue. If you look hard enough u can find free parking. We were put in a musty room with a ceiling literally leaking water on our stuff and the staff clearly didnt care. They did move our room, but despite us staying several nights at their hotel, they never had the manager get in touch with us nor dod they offer an upgrade. We probably won't stay here again.

The welcome drink was so refreshing and people who you meet during happy hour are quite friendly. This hostel host seniors and young children to my surprise! The restaurant food is excellent! And reasonably priced! Stayed 3 nights and the private suites are better because of privacy and noise. Highly recommended experience!

Loved the overall ambiance and attention to design detail. It’s fabulous from an artistic standpoint and the location was perfect. There were a couple of not so great things however: there was mold in the shower, the restaurant floor was filthy and the service staff for breakfast were bordering rude. The reception and bellhop staff were terrific! Overall a 4 out of 5 stars.

Just back from a week at the Independente and what a beautiful place to stay. From the moment we arrived we were treated with a friendliness and warmth sadly missing in a lot of hotels. The hotel is divided between suites, and a hostel. We stayed in a basic suite, which was clean, comfortable and a perfect base to explore the city from. A breakfast buffet is served every morning with a choice of hot and cold food and the hotel has two restaurants if you want an evening meal. One of the restaurants (The Insolito located on the roof) has a stunning view across some of the older parts of the city and the riverTagus.
The city centre is only a short walk from the hotel. It's a hilly place so if you prefer public transport there's a tram stop pretty much outside the front door
One thing I've seen a lot of reviews mention is the level of street noise in the area. Yes it is very noisy, but it's hardly the hotels fault. Lisbon,and in particular Bairro Alto where the hotel is located, is a lively place, (particularly at night) and my advice would be to either go with the flow or invest in a good pair of earplugs.
I can't recommend the Independente enough, it's a quirky place, reminiscent of a Wes Anderson film set, and we loved it.

Take earplugs as loud music is played in the downstairs bar. The bunk beds could be better - there was no shelf for personal items, and no privacy curtains, and you can feel when others move about. I’d previously stayed at Steel House hostel in Copenhagen where the bunk beds were so much better…

The food was creative and very good quality, e.g. the cucumber-lime coulis on vainilla ice cream with black pepper meringue. I ended up eating all my meals there. Fabulous choice. The location is the other huge plus for this hotel: walking distance to all the spots you def want to see in Lisbon. Can't wait to get back there.

I had a great stay in the hostel section of the hotel. It's a beautiful old building well located in the city up the hill from the metro. Keep in mind that there can be a bit of noise from the street and other guests so pack earplugs! Showers were hot and had soap, bathrooms were clean. The breakfast was absolutely amazing – I would visit again just for that! Overall would stay again.

Location was wonderful and the restaurant & rooftop bar were delicious & a fun experience. However, I did not have hot water while staying in my private room. I asked the receptionist what to do and they said to wait 15 mins and try again, so I did, but still no hot water. I went down to the receptionist again & he came up to my room and checked the hot water to make sure the settings were correct but confirmed the water was not hot. I had a flight the next morning at 6am and really needed to shower. It was very inconvenient and I still have not heard from the manager. Very disappointing.

Lovely old building with eclectic decor. Very clean and comfortable room (Superior Double Room). Front desk staff were very helpful and courteous. The restaurant in the hotel had fantastic food and service.

Just fine!

It is located uphill. If you carry luggages better take a taxi from the airport or to save more money- take a taxi from the nearest metro. Will “take your breath away”.

Also, for travellers age 40ish and over, you better email the hostel for a lower bunkbed. It was uncorfotable, unsecured nor safety. I supposed to stay on the top/3rd bed but requested and luckily assigned in the middle bed though i asked for the lower bed. My room’s bunkbed has a 3-bunkbeds in which you have to climb up if assigned on a third bed. Been staying in a hostel for nearly 25 years. This is was the first time staying with a -3 bunkbeds
Lastly, though it provided individual light in each bed- would recommend to have at least one ceiling light so we willl not having trouble arranging stuffs when unpacking/packing stuffs.
However, Lourdes the breakfast supervisor is super amazing and friendly! Thank you very much!

Fantastic historic and quirky property. Excellent breakfast and rooftop terrace (best tapas we had in Lisbon - very clever and different). Super location. Bring comfortable shoes and an open mind!
