Ok overall - building isn't soundproof so had to suffer noise of drunk people outside in the early morning waking me up.
Room clean upon check-in, but cleaning chemicals used by housekeeping had very strong smell which made my throat hurt and caused me to sneeze a lot.

The hotel is basic, which is fine, but my room and the corridor my room was on smelt absolutely horrific. The corridor smelt strongly of smoke, and instead of airing it out enough, it seems as though they had tried to use industrial cleaning fluid to cover the smell. My room also smelt strongly of cleaning fluid. I left the window open while I was out all day to try and air it out, but this did not work. When I went to reception to ask about changing a room there wasn't anyone there. When I informed the receptionist of the smell issue as I left, he told me that this was probably people in the evening breaking the rules and informed me they had a \"domestic incident\" that evening and assured me that next time they would get me a room on a quieter floor. I told him the problem wasn't the noise but the smell. I was not given an apology. The breakfast was fine, but no knives were available as they were 'in the dishwasher' so we ended up spreading butter with a spoon! Very disappointing considering the price. Would not recommend.

The room itself felt poorly designed without consideration of comfort or useability. The floor was uncarpeted which made the room feel echoey and sparse. The heating was off despite it being a cold day so the room and particularly the bathroom felt chilly. The bed squeaked and the duvet was thin and insubstantial. You cannot see the TV from the bed and there is no where to sit where you can see it. There is only one bedside lamp and the overhead lighting was dim. The door did not fit well in the frame so let in light around the edges and made the room feel insecure.

However the reason for the one star review is due to the handling of an incident on the first night and my subsequent request. I was woken around 10.30 by doors slamming, shouting and swearing. This continued until around 4.30am, keeping me awake and causing me to feel unsafe and distressed. In the morning, I reported this to reception and requested a cancellation of my remaining two nights and a refund, as I now felt unsafe staying there.
The staff member on reception was empathetic and kind, confirmed that security had been aware of this disturbance all night and apologised. However, the manager then refused to refund the remaining two nights- stating that this disturbance was out of their control as the guest in the room next to mine had been using drugs.
It took a formal letter, asserting my rights under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 for the service to be carried out wi

The room was very clean. Wooden hard floors are a big plus. Mattress wasn’t the most comfortable as it was a spring mattress, and pillows were hard, but they were comfortable enough for a short stay. You can hear clearly the hallway and nearby rooms, so recommended to have ear plugs if you’re sensitive.

So much was wrong with this stay, we booked for two nights but only actually stayed one !

Decent budget hotel with comfy beds, a good shower and a nice breakfast.
But 2 things simple things are sorely needed...
Please - install soft close doors, no more slamming all through the night, drives you nuts it does :(
And a towel hook on the back of the bathroom doors would a wonderful addition.

Considering the hotel is on west street it was quiet ( level 1 room 23 ) , I’ve also stayed on level 2 and 3 which was ok as well , I’ve worked in Brighton now for 7 months ( contractor) and this was the best place in my experience on a budget that I have stayed ( I’ve stayed in quite a few ) , modern rooms with a fridge, kettle and a fan which made things easier especially the fridge ( other hotels take note ) , staff were great … FairPlay to you , thanks 🙏.

Good very reasonable hotel in good location at the top of Preston Street with all the restaurants and pubs. Comfortable bed and good size shower. Although the decoration is basic for the price it’s very reasonable including a good cooked breakfast.

Handy for Brighton or Hove
The hotel is about a 15 minute walk from Brighton station on the busy Western Road which continues along to Hove. The reception is at ground level between shops with all rooms at higher levels. My room was satisfactory though the mattress was a bit springy. Furnishings were functional – the shower was good plus there was a safe and little fridge contained within the wardrobe. Rooms are serviced upon request at reception. The buffet breakfast offered various hot and cold items. Boiled or fried eggs were cooked to order as an alternative to the scrambled ones in the buffet. My boiled egg was very under cooked but they did a better job with the fried eggs. Considering the location there was not much external noise at night but my stay was mid week. I’m a light sleeper and I was awakened early each morning by delivery vans. My friend had a different room and he was kept awake by an air conditioning unit on an adjacent lower roof. He was able to change rooms the next day and was told the unit was connected to the Sainsbury’s store. As the hotel just has a doorway on the street level I found many guests who smoked stood around this entrance so that did not create a good appearance. Overall the hotel is similar to a Travelodge in a central location – not far from attractions, bus routes, shops and the beach. The staff I met were pleasant enough and I would probably stay there again.

If you can’t get a YHA and you have to find the cheapest room you can and aren’t looking for any thrills; this is the hotel for you. It’s like student accomodation with an en-suite toilet but we had an awful mattress.
