Nice stay

Room was lovely and spacious, however it didnt have a mirror or a view which was a shame as the hotels grounds are nice.
The lift needs sorting, as it made me anxious everytime getting in it with its noises a slow movement. It said it could fit 7, however a sign was next to the lift saying no mors than 2 people.
Stay were polite. The reception could be nicer as this is the first area people see. Breakfast was okay, it could have had more choice. Also the drive in to the hotel could just be nicer. I would stay again.

Very good staff in this hotel. It is still being renovated and some areas need rapid improvement. No hot water on one morning but these things can happen. It was resolved. Overall a good hotel with its main asset being the very friendly and helpful staff.

Relaxing and tranquil

We had one night and it was the best sleep we have had for a long time, staff very polite, the driveway to the abbey must of been about 1/4 of a mile long, bedroom had a view across the field's and court yard, will definitely stay again

This property has the potential to be amazing, however, despite the staffs best efforts this was a disappointing stay.
The lift in the hotel makes a horrific noise and can be heard clearly in the rooms anywhere near the lift.
We were also woken up each day of our stay (between 7 and 9am) by the fire alarms.
All in all, what should have been a lovely stay was quite disappointing.

Amazing property set in tranquil woodlands.
Room was lovely with high ceilings and superb decorated. Some attention to details are much needed though: no remote control, kettle wasn't working, soap dispenser empty.

A shame that the bar didn’t have any beer on draft. The food I had was good and the room was lovely as was the hotel in general. I couldn’t find anyone in reception (or anywhere else) on the morning I checked out so I just left the key on a desk in reception as they didn’t seem to have a key drop box.

This is not a 4 star hotel as advertised. The facilities just aren’t present as you would expect and it feels like it is struggling to be a coherent place. Needs massive investment and a proper interior decorator who can choose furniture. We loved the quirkiness and the price but it would be safer to say 3 star. HOWEVER All the staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful. The sheets felt super clean and lovely. The room was clean and warm and presentable. The parkland in which it is set is equally quirky with beautiful mature trees. Conveniently positioned for a play at Stratford.

Unfortunately in today’s climate of high costs of materials there are areas which require some repair & maintenance this does not however spoil the overall experience as staff are welcoming & helpful.

Hotel knew aircon was broken in my room and knew they were fully booked for two days before my stay. Didn’t say anything.
Let me check in and pay on arrival and still didn’t say anything. Went to my room to find it was 35 ° in there so went down to complain. Hotel said there was nothing they could do.
Asked to speak to the manager and after some back and forth was told I can stay the night but get a full refund. It was one of the worst nights sleep in my life.
Then when I chased them for the refund they have gone completely silent. Absolutely awful customer service. Room was actually okay if it wasn’t for the aircon issue but I’m absolutely furious about their inability to stand behind their refund offer after disingenuously letting me pay and check in without pre warning about the a/c. Such poor form.

MEH!!

Hotel is in need of some TLC. Cleaning of ceilings, light fittings etc to get rid of cobwebs. The grounds looked like they hadn’t been tended too in about 2-3 weeks. Bar expensive but didn’t mine that. Restaurant prices very expensive for mid range food. Comfy bed massive rooms decent shower. But unfortunately left disappointed with the overall visit.

Online, the property looks fantastic. As you drive towards the hotel the outside is stunning, but as you get inside, you can see it’s in desperate need of repair.
I arrived Friday evening, and when I went to check-in, I was given my key and went to my room. The AC wasn’t working, and after trying to fix it I called reception and asked for someone to come and look at it, as it was truly too hot with no window available to open. An hour later, no one had come after being told “5 minutes”. I went to reception to speak to the manager, who turned up 10 minutes later and promised to come look at the issue. After 20 minutes waiting, i was given a new room instead. It was clean, toiletries and tea/coffee facilities, so I cannot complain.
The building itself and the grounds are just so run down and in desperate need of repair and upkeep. I went for a walk and found a pile of fire extinguishers, an abandoned gazebo and long-forgotten tennis courts.
I didn’t eat at the hotel, and glad I hadn’t. The prices were quite high, the food that I did see didn’t look particularly appetising, and there was one vegetarian option, nothing vegan.
I wouldn’t recommend this hotel until it has had some upgrades; it was truly like stepping back in time, but not in the good way…

The restaurant service wasn’t great. Was told the lie was chicken several times. Ordered the bbq pulled pork burger….which it wasn’t then re ordered the pie for it to be steak! (Was actually better than if it had been chicken) was all a bit of a disaster but the lady who served me was lovely and apologetic and gave me a free pudding.
Had a very hot uncomfortable nights sleep. Although there is air con I had it set to the coldest bit I don’t think it was working so a very uncomfortable and hot night.
Beautiful hotel but let down in these 2 areas. I didn’t get much sleep

Pleasant stay

We stayed for 2 nights, we had a lovely stay, room was clean but quite small. Breakfast was very nice, a good selection of hot and cold items.
Only complaint would be the lunch we had, we had a BLT, the bread was very disappointing (your cheap white sliced bread) for the cost I would have expected a nice bakery loaf.

Hi Breakfast I was told at 7.00, got to the room at 7.00 no-one there and service started at 7.15, and breakfast was being prepared individually and not buffet style as normal.
I decided just to have tea and toast and give it a miss as the time to serve took too long

Apon arrival, I did not ger greeted with a warm welcome, as the reception is confusing where a woman just starred at me clearly confused. After approaching her I said I’m here to sign in at 14:47, to which she told me to wait for 10 minutes… didnt tell me I could wait in any areas. Then I had to que for 25 mins to be signed in which was a joke. Once I arrived in my room, there was damp and mould all up the walls. The tiles in the floor were broken & I actually cut my toe open on the floor tiles as there was no beading around the tiles. I also paid for breakfast; but I didn’t receive & did not get offered my money baxk as I was not incormed at reception what time breakfast was & I missed it. Lastly, there was multiple dead bugs on the floor, the window was wide open which left the room freezing & no instructions how to work the heating which left us freezing all night.

Had to ask for a refund as neither the a/c worked nor the windows opened. One member of staff was useless, but Adrian at least tried to sort it out.
Room was like an oven and it would not be healthy to sleep in. I had to drive 2.5 hours home in the evening because there were no other rooms and no other solutions suggested.
I still haven’t received the refund.

What a nightmare hotel
Do not waste good money staying here
Also a fire hazard
I was allocated a room up a set of narrow stairs no window no air con dirty and no space.
I wouldn’t have got out alive if a fire.
No manager on site
Complaints dealt with by young receptionists.
Manager has never replied to my request for a refund.
And has never contacted me to talk over the issue.
Fire officer and health and safety should check out this so called hotel

For the last 10 years i have travelled with work so a hotel stay is not new to me. It was 29º so made sure i booked a hotel with air con. Arrived and checked into my room which was in the attic, dirty with cobwebs everywhere and considerably hotter than 29º. Attempted to put on the air con which didn’t work. Called reception who advised someone was on their way to have a look. 20 minutes later i had to go and ask where they were, reception did not know. Was asked to wait so ended up going to the bar and having a wine (small house red wine is £9.95!!) The manager arrived to tell me they had an issue with the air con and to give him 10 minutes. 1 &1/2 hours later i was checked into another room on a lower floor, still with no working air con. Had to drive to Screwfix and buy an air con unit for £329 just to be able to sleep. Finally got to sleep to be woken up at 11pm by a member of staff just walking into my room then leaving straight away. By the time i got up and went to the door they were gone. Went to the toilet and immediately heard constant, relentless banging at the door. Answered the door to find two staff members looking very confused why i was in this room. Expressed my dissatisfaction bluntly and they appologised and said they were not told i had been moved. Breakfast was also a treat, it was quite impressive how bad the scrambled eggs were, rock sold dried lump of grey eggs and totally inedible, no staff around and couldnt even get a coffee. No discount was offered

The staff here are so wonderful, yes the property itself may need some updating (which is being undertaken), but welcoming and lovely staff make such a difference.

The grounds are spectacular especially in the sunny weather, and the outside space being open to the guests is lovely.

My only real criticism is having stayed before I cannot see a material difference in the solo base rate room and the next level up double, other than £20.

The food is quite expensive, but it is delicious and speedy.

Very nice room which was clean and modern and grounds around the hotel are beautiful but seriously needs some work on service. Breakfast cold and no staff around for help on anything.

Overall fine for a night but I think will be a lot better once renovations are complete.

Building was amazing. Rooms seemed to have be recently updated and were comfortable, cleanliness not their stronge point, ended up changing rooms twice due to this. Rooms need to be checked by house keeping management before guests are checked in. Breakfast was good although seemed disorganised and need someone to oversee the staff.

Pleasant staff, poor organisation and maintenance

The room we booked was given to someone else, so we were upgraded to four poster bed, which was freezing and heating not working, so upgraded again to junior suite which had not been cleaned, so offered another four poster which was just warm enough but still heating not working. Booked evening meal which was very poor considering £86 price tag just for two starters and two mains, ordered wine with it but whatever we chose wasn't available and even that didn't become clear till we were already starting on the main courses. Also some kind of event happening in marquee on front lawn, so bar crowded out by them, and view across the grounds blocked. Overall, an unpleasant experience. Needless to say, we won't be back.

Very disapponting

Really not good. Beautiful building outside but needs a lot of TLC inside.
Reception service not particularly great. Didn’t even tell us where to find our room, just where a working lift was. Room had off smell. View was two rooftops. No glasses or water in either of the 2 rooms we were given. The air conditioning wasn’t working and Husband had to go down twice. 2nd time they changed the room to garden view. Stains on ceiling. Curtains hanging off rail. We didn’t sleep much because the floor from the room above was creaking well into early hours of the morning. When I went to complain about no water etc two staff were talking and I had to interrupt. She didn’t seem bothered that this was the 3rd time we had to come to reception. We couldn’t call because the phones were not on. The number on the checking in email didn’t work when I called it from my mobile and when I phoned the online number it kept going to voicemail. Breakfast which isn’t cheap wasn’t great quality- croissants, cereal, toast. Sliced melon, pineapple. Hot food scrambled eggs, sausages and bacon which looked like they had been steamed, beans and tomatoes. The poached eggs I requested were nicely cooked.
My husband told reception on departure how awful we found our stay- her response was that she would make a note of it

Avoid staying here - more trouble than its worth.

Unfortunately, this stay was disappointing from the moment that I arrived. When I reached the reception, I was told that I didn’t have a booking, this is despite my having a confirmation in both the app and in my emails. I had also checked in via the hotels own email, welcome message. Following some back-and-forth with the receptionist and hotel manager, where at times I was made to feel as if I had made the error, they conceded that the system had made some sort of mistake and they would try to find me a room.

The room that they provided I can only imagine is never presented to guests. I was directly outside the kitchen, and storerooms and so could hear staff loudly working coming and going outside my room and smoking outside my room too. This went on until 11:30 pm, and the staff began working from 5:30 am the next morning.

On top of this, there was no kettle in the room or tea and coffee provided. The state of repair of the hotel itself seem to be very worn down despite the building being set in beautiful grounds. It is such a shame as this could clearly be a really beautiful place to stay, but the overall experience was one of the worst I’ve ever had in a hotel.

Poor Standard Rooms

We checked in to find our bathroom toilet had urine left in the bowl.
The lights didn't work either, we were not happy.
We complained to reception who offered us an upgrade.

I am a hotel housekeeping manager at a luxury 4 * hotel so was disgusted the room wasn't checked properly prior to our arrival.

We moved into our upgraded room which was lovely but unfortunately the hairdryer didn't work & hadn't been PAT tested for 2 years.

Again I sent my boyfriend down to reception to advise them.

For a 4* hotel & a Junior Suite this just isn't good enough!

Needs an overhaul. Food awful.

The hotel is beautiful from the outside and holds lots of history. The inside was clean and tidy but a mishmash of old and new. The room was small with a standard double bed but very clean.
The staff were helpful and friendly.
The food however was terrible. We ate in the restaurant in our first night, ordering risotto.
This was completely tasteless and sloppy. I was so disappointed and at a cost of £19 each, an expensive disappointment.

Awful service, unsecure and rough around the edges

Firstly the positives, the building exterior and gardens are lovely. The room, a Mansion Superior Double was clean and looked newly refurbished. There were so many negatives however.

Firstly, apparently the card machine wasn’t working when we checked in so we had to be escorted to our room and told they’d be back with a key in 20 minutes. The new (that day) GM had to ask three times which room we were being shown to. 30 minutes later when we came downstairs to reception to see every room key was now on the reception desk apart from ours.

The room whilst pretty with a lovely view had very limited storage and no extractor fan in the bathroom.

The communal areas are very untidy and look as though a refurbishment was underway but perhaps abandoned some time ago. There are patches of bare plaster everywhere and mess on show throughout the downstairs.

We headed out elsewhere for dinner and upon return found the lock on our door wasn’t working so when it shut you needed to tap the key again to lock the door. I was told this was not standard and a fault. This meant whilst we were out all of our belongings were left at risk. Likewise whilst we slept anyone could have walked in.

We booked 8:30am for breakfast and came down on time to find a single couple already sat down and a completely empty room thereafter. What followed was awful including no organisation, no staff, long waits, incorrect order, continental breakfast items missing, and general chaos.

Would never stay again

Seems to be run on a shoestring. Bar service was poor. Prices elevated. Nice size room, clean and very comfy bed but very cold room. Air con would not supply heat. Tiny shampoo and conditioner suppled no shower gel. Restaurant prices very steep with very limited options. Main meal choice and desert choice both unavailable. No vodka available at bar. Bins in the ladies toilets by reception were over flowing. Lots of cobwebs on the high ceilings and light fittings in public areas. Several people having issues checking in and out. Pleasant staff and we did enjoy our stay.

Delightful surroundings but cold room.

This is a beautiful hotel with immaculate grounds. The architecture is stunning. The room allocated was very well decorated, delightful and warm, but hadn't been vacuumed. I asked Reception to arrange to have it done. They moved my room instead because housekeeping had finished for the evening. Unfortunately due to low bookings (only one other couple booked), the heating in the new room was turned off. It didnt warm up all night and reception did not answer the phone or respond to my messages. It didn't get past 17 degrees C. I prefer 18 for sleeping.
Staff were delightful and did what they could to make my stay as comfortable as possible.

Avoid, unless you are an escimo. No hot water and no heating, no back up portable heaters, what more could you want from an over night stay?! Souless hotel, no period furniture just modern, cheap, grey repro chesterfields in the bar, no paintings, absolutely nothing. No ambience. Basically the Owner/Manager has no idea about the hospitality industry and shouldn't be charging more than 30 pounds a night in the Winter. Reception was a queue of people complaining. What a shame as the building and setting is great. Expedia should NOT be listing this hotel on the site, take note!

Great potential in the house and grounds. Need for atmospheric touches for example, bar ambience; make more use of mood lighting and background music.
More Al Fresco dining options to maximise outside atmosphere.
Need for office staff to liaise and communicate with general staff in a more coordinated way, for example, those paying for meal deals inclusive of overnight stays; seemed to be some discrepancies.
Somw staff are exceptional particularly the ones with smiling welcoming faces. Need for training for those who need to develop positive rapports with customers.

Where to start? Don't believe claims that this hotel is 4 star or particularly dog friendly.
Booking conversations didn't fill us with confidence.
On arrival, reception was unprofessional, chauvanistic & used a tiresome repetitive sales tactic to try to get a dinner reservation.
1st impressions of our groundfloor room (good for dogs) were positive - comfy mattress & nicely decorated bathroom. As unpacking, we noticed the large stain on the ceiling, bizarrely there were 14 power sockets yet the bathroom had no useful surfaces, did'nt even have anywhere to hang towels or a loo roll holder!? The protective strip was still on the door bar, skirting board was unfinished & disturbingly with Covid to consider still, there was no soap. Oh & 1 of the lights kept flickering annoyingly & the huge TV didn't work properly. Most of these can be seen in photos.
Reception failed to solve any of the issues, not even the soap - told a delivery hadn't turned up ....shouldn't they have reserves or go buy some!
We would have slept well on the comfy mattress, but for the noise of doors & of staff shouting on their break at around 11pm!
The rain shower in the morning did not disappoint, it was lovely & there was definitely plenty of hot water, unlike others reviewed. Neither was there a fire alarm , thank goodness!
My husband used the bar & it was good.
Breakfast was not pleasant - confusion due to the dogs.
The grounds need a lot of attention & dog poo bins! Only stayed 1 night thankfully.

Great place to spend time away.

Second stay here in 3 months when passing by on business. As per last time the place was brilliant, in fact it was even better than last time.
Cheapest room available was more than adequate, clean and well appointed.
Hotel itself is exactly what I like, old country Mansion still with all its charm and grandeur but perfectly converted for its current purpose.
Food was excellent. Plenty choice on the evening meal and extremely good quality, breakfast was likewise. Couldn’t of been happier.
Staff were extremely helpful and made us welcome, we even happened to meet the owner who was there and he poured me a pint. Really nice guy, only found out he was the owner after he left.
They have had the place less than a year but really appear to be improving things quickly and have big plans.
I wish them every success and will definitely stay again if travelling down that way from Scotland again.

Beautiful building but won’t be staying again

Beautiful building but that’s it. Only after being told we were on 2nd floor were we told lift was not working. We were not told that once we’d climbed 4 sets of steep steps at opening the bedroom door were we faced with TWO more sets of steep steps!
Facing all these steps with suitcase, bags and a dog was no fun ( pic shows 1st steps through room door)Turning on the TV we found it did not work, actually the tv was ok it was the power sockets - all of them except the two at the desk - the other side of the room! The phone on the desk was of no use as there were no instructions on how to contact Reception - in the end I called from my phone. An engineer arrived but could do nothing by which time we were due to be at dinner so we asked for an extension for the night.
Dinner was disappointing beyond expectations 2 courses took 2 hours, and that was only because they gave us the starters for another table who had ordered 20 mins before we did. One poor couple who were not having starters were still waiting after an hour and s half! When the mains arrived the lamb was cold but we did not want to wait any longer. Then to add insult they charged 10% service charge. Some waiting staff knew how to serve and kept chasing the kitchen, others should have stayed at home!
Breakfast limited choice.
Even if all of the area is full, will not stay here again

Watch out no lifts

I understand the hotel is going through some refurbishment etc. The biggest issue is that we had an elderly friend with us and both lifts being out of action was a severe inconvenience. The fact that the last one went out of service the night before and new guests weren’t notified in advance shows a lack of care for guests. Any hotel across multiple floors needs this to retain it’s star rating. Paying therefore for a 2 star service and not being offered any credit or partial refund gesture shows the hotel has some way to go.
That said the room was comfortable but the lack of sound proofing above meant we heard a lot of noise and creaking above us at 3-4 in morning.

The food and service in restaurant was excellent although be prepared for top London pricing. £8.50 for 4 slices of toast with garlic and butter was tricky to justify IMO. Don’t bother asking for bread roll any longer

We gathered this hotel has recently been bought by new owners. The hotel and surrounding gardens are lovely, but certainly a work in progress. The basics are there, the bedrooms are warm, but needs more heating everywhere else. It was particularly chilly in dining room, bar and corridors. The staff were very good. The breakfast was adequate, but no choice apart from a full English or cereal, yoghurt and pastries. Disappointing

Scammed! booked through Hotels.com where the property is called Wroxhall Abbey Hotel and Spa, the Spa no longer exists, when we contacted hotel prior they wouldn’t offer a refund as they advised closure is stated within small print.
Hotel is shabby, needs a lick of paint, windows need to be cleaned, terrace area in need of jet wash and weeding, broken bathroom door handle, main electrical/isolation box within the 27 acre grounds open & broken not demarcated off. Some staff’s demeanour was rude and clipped. waited 1hr for starter until told by management restaurant was closed, at least 25 guests had to find food else where, we spent £40 on Ubers and thankfully found somewhere, police in reception on our return, spoke with the couple who owned/ran the hotel, their immediate response was we can’t get the staff, they call in sick, no apology given. The impression we got was they undervalued and treated their staff poorly as with their paying customers. It’s such a shame as it’s a beautiful building with amazing grounds. They don’t let you put any drinks on your room which was strange. Positives- room was small but nice, new furniture throughout room, nice log fires in bar area and restaurant, ONLY USE THIS HOTEL AS LAST RESORT.

Our Stay

The room was comfortable if not a bit basic for a suite and lacking a few fine details. There little to no natural light in the room due to its location in the hotel. We were told the lift was not working but it clearly was as we could hear it throughout our stay.
Bottle water was not replenished for the second night.
The restaurant had little atmosphere despite the open fire. It was cold and other guests still wore coats. The menu was limited, the wine list also…. Wine prices were increased by crossing our and hand writing in pen. The service in the restaurant by one member of staff was excellent. She was informative and knowledgeable especially about the wines and service. Food was well presented and of a good standard.
The setting could be stunning but needs renovating to bring the hotel to its former glory keeping the original features like they have so far.
There is no spa, despite being advertised as a hotel and spa.

A superior/ inferior room - no view and no heating

Unfortunately after a long day traveling we arrived to find our room was freezing cold and the heating system not working. The staff showed me three alternative rooms and none had a working heating system. We swopped rooms to the least cold room.

Whilst we had a Mansion Superior Room, the room was up three flights of stairs and under roof eaves. Whilst the room had sky lights we had no windows to look out of and enjoy any view.

Sadly the cold room tainted our experience of what could have been a more wonderful experience and the poor weather meant we walk the grounds or visit the Wren chapel before moving on.

Maybe we will give it a second chance when the weather is warmer.

Lovely getaway location

Beautiful location and easy to find. We were a little concerned it may have been a bit cold or draughty, but it was fine. The duvets were very luxurious and we had a great sleep. Very comfy and pleasant.

Fantastic hotel

Property is a lovely old building in a stunning rural location. All the staff we met were well presented and friendly throughout the whole property. We had a modern large room whick looked recently renovated with plenty of sockets for everything required and a lovely ensuite shower room. Really enjoyed our stay and as we checked out we rebooked a further stay.

Hotel cancelled on us - no sign of a refund!

I have to confess, I didn't actually stay at the hotel. Wroxall Abbey contacted me 2 days before my booking to let me know that they had come to the difficult decision to close the hotel due to flood damage. I hold nothing against them for this. However, the debacle that followed has been utter lunacy. The hotel advised that I could either get a refund for my booking through their administrators or via Hotels.com. After serveral attempted phone calls (which never connect) and a good few hours trying to find an email address (you can try [email protected], but good luck to you!!) Hotels.com have flat out refused to issue a refund. Their excuse is that they cannot be liable for their hotels cancellation policies, but they are more than happy to take the money in the first place. After several email exchanges and very little sympathy from the Hotels.com customer service reps, I tried option 2 which is to contact the Administrators. The Administrators have not yet responded to my original email nor any follow up I have sent. I have tried phoning the hotel back, but there is no answer there either. If you had a prepaid booking at the end of August 2022, good luck with the refund! I am disappointed with both the hotel and Hotels.com on their complete lack of responsibility for failing to deliver the service paid for. I will not be booking here or with Hotels.com again.
