The night we got there, we found lots of hair on the bed linen. It was late, the phone in the room wasn't working, and we didn't go down to complain; we were exhausted and just went to sleep. Overall, the hotel is average.Staff is very helpful and nice.

Bare bones hotel with no complimentary amenities (water, in-room coffee and tea). The room was spotless and smelled extremely clean upon walking in and the beds and pillows were incredibly comfortable. However, the tiny bathroom needs updating and there was mold and mildew on the shower tiles and ceiling. I’d also recommend lotion and hand soap.

Room was clean, the cleaning staff was nice and put a lot of effort in keeping it perfect. The downside was the bed, every time you move, it squeaked; not very comfortable. The heater was another downside, making little noises when it was working.
The location is perfect though, close to theaters and subway.

Note, there were no “standard” amenities that you find in most basic hotel rooms - no coffee pot, mini fridge, etc. no coffee pot in the lounge area near lobby, either. It is very close to Times Square area so it is a very busy area but easy to walk to Broadway shows.

It was close to where we wanted to go, near a subway for further places. The room was clean. There was no drinking water, so we bought some next door at the deli. It was loud outside, seemed like the window was open but it was closed. I’ll definitely come back, but I’ll be more prepared next time with ear plugs and water.

I stayed in room 803 and I had to have them come up to change the sheets as there was something smeared and gross on them. There’s no HOT water. Took Luke warm showers. No body lotion. Just body wash and conditioner. Staff was super friendly. Convenient location and good price for NYC hotel. I don’t think I’ll come back here though. Some of the rooms are extremely outdated. Mine wasn’t. However 807 is super old school and we had several issues with the blinds and heater/cooling in that room. That room also didnt have HOT water and my friends sheets also had to be changed because there was a stain on them. The elevator was broken and they were working on it while we were there.

The hotel was extremely convenient to Times Square and all the things we wanted to do. There are many restaurants steps away. The staff was friendly and helpful. The only challenge was the radiator hissed loudly and occasionally sounded like a tea kettle in the middle of the night. The mattress was very comfortable.

Stay here if you want to constantly hear the hallway doors slam shut on repeat as if that were their sole purpose. Or if you want to hear your room’s heater or water pipe clank on repeat as if someone is standing right there in your room hitting it with a wrench. Or if you want your room’s safe not bolted to anything, making it available to be carried out of the room by hand. Or a shower that actually has some good water pressure, yet pressure so strong through a shower head that only has one setting (fine) making the water streams feel like needles on your skin.

On a positive note, there was some confusion and difficulty during my check-in process. When I expressed that the situation was making me not feel very secure and uneasy about my stay, the employee at the front desk did a good job at rectifying the situation and compensating for it. I appreciated his efforts.

The place is convenient and walkable to the attractions. But the heater in the room was making very loud noise almost every two hours and kept waking us up. We told the staff in the morning and we came back at night the staff said they fixed already but the noise still came back the same.

For the price it was ok. I would say, if you get assigned a room that's next to the elevators or hallway doors, asked to be moved immediately. You won't be able to get proper rest with the constant noises. My AC was also making weird noises, and the room was hot when I arrived. I changed the AC settings and the issue was solved. The bed mattress was hard. During checkout I shared with staffing the issues I had with my room and all they offer was to leave some notes on system. No recovery options or apologies were offered. Location is great with easy access to the subway, Broadway shows and many other attractions. For a short trip this hotel might be a convenient option if you're looking for an affordable hotel in Time Square.

Negatives: bathroom in our room (504) was tiny, with tub with older shower curtain, very low toilet. Bathroom so narrow my left arm hit the tp holder when sitting! No hot water in shower. Lukewarm at best.
Moulding on bottom of wall near bed needs painting. Small tv on wall.

Overall a good stay for one night. Could use updating.

I will start with the good stuff. Very well located. Very clean. Pretty well priced for the location. Welcoming, efficient staff at the front desk. The remaining are not \"bad\" per say, but less than ideal especially for business travellers expecting a certain level of . First, the elevators up are waiting for you right when you arrive, but to get down...well...prepare to wait for min 5 minutes [not an exaggeration]. At some point I just pushed the button repeatedly for my own mental peace. LOL. Once you get up to your room, you will find that while clean, the rooms are dated, the TV is super small and lacks any real channels [unless you love local news ], there is no fridge or microwave and now updated plugs to leverage USB instead of old school. I nearly panicked thinking I forgot the power \"box\" that plugs into the wall at home but thankfully had it and hadn't used on in over a year! I was able to get DoorDash and Uber Eats delivered to my room but had to make note of the logistics before the front desk people would let them up. They once called me in the shower to ask if I ordered which kind of defeats the purpose of contactless apps like these, but such is life. Finally, I put the DND card on the door and yet, when I returned after meetings, my bed had been made and the bathroom cleaned. This made me nervous as I had valuables out on the bed and worried they could be lost or stolen seeing as they ignored my request to not enter to clean the room.

If you want to stay in a great location without the massive price tag, this is the spot. The Hotel is basic, but if you can overlook the lack of frills and appreciate the very low price for location, you’ll have a great stay.

The reception team were incredibly helpful and welcoming and happy to answer any questions. There is an amazing coffee shop opposite and a supermarket next door that stocks all essentials including a nighttime tea or hot chocolate.

It’s worth noting that the building is older and noise travels easily. You can hear neighbours coming and going in the hallways, and the old radiators are noisy - I’d definitely recommend bringing a pair of earplugs if a light sleeper.

Despite the noise and the simple features, being steps away from Times Square and Broadway made it all worth it. It’s a fantastic, budget-friendly home base for anyone who plans on spending most of their time out exploring the city!

It's an older hotel but perfectly serviceable. A/C is fine. Could use better outlets for charging, but charging was possible. Not much in the way of amenities, but the room was clean, bright, and comfortable. If you don't need all the bells and whistles, this is a great place to stay. Great price for its location.

Room was clean, I did the double, it was a small space but perfect for my stay. I liked the old school charm of the place but at the same time everything was well maintained and clean.

Air conditioner worked totally fine my room actually got pretty chilly but it was easy to adjust so not an issue.

Didn’t have a USB charging port in the room which I was a little surprised by but I was able to charge my phone by plugging it in to the tv so not an actual issue.

Staff held my luggage even post checkout to give more time in the city without lugging around which was super nice. I’d stay here again.

Not a great place, but I guess you get what you pay for.

The bed was not attached to the bed frame, so if you wanted to sit back to read or watch tv, the bed would slide away from the wall. ]

There is an inch high lip between the bedroom and the bathroom which I tripped over several times.

The tv was so dim that you cou/d barely see it from the bed.

I had to run the shower for a good ten minutes before i got any hot waterl.

On the plus side, the staff was helpful and accomodating.

The best thing about the St. James is the location!!! Can’t beat being in the center of Manhattan and so close to everything! The staff was wonderful and kind. The hotel itself is older but somewhat updated. The worst part were the beds that were hard as concrete and the window ac that was broken and rattling constantly. We only stayed in the hotel for sleeping but it was not restful inn any way. If the price was this good in this location, we kinda figured there would be a catch, sleeplessness was the catch. However, we would stay again because of all of the other positives! :)

The perfect hotel if you want a central location for walkable site seeing. Less than a block away from Times Square, but considerably less foot traffic. The hotel itself has comfy furniture and wood paneled walls and is reminiscent of old Hollywood hotels. Rooms and common areas were all clean and staff was friendly and helpful.
