The location of this hotel is great, you don’t get the craziness of Times Square but you are right there, easy access to trains, and plenty of food options around. The staff if friendly and kind, the bed/pillows are comfy.

However, it is an old property (as half of NYC), the rooms have been remodeled, but it shows. Small rooms and bathroom, and my biggest issue was the noise, probably because I was in the 4th floor and my room faced the street - I can say by own experience- NYC IS indeed the City that never sleeps. I barely slept in 4 days.

All in all, not a bad option if you get a room in the back of the property. Price is fair.

Perfectly placed near times square and plenty of stores, theres a 24 hr walgreens and a small snack/food place right next door. The room was well kept and staff were very nice and attentive. Unfortunately we could not get the wifi to work on my laptop or the TV but we did not reach out to staff so this might've been an easy fix we were unaware of.

You get what you pay for. Dont expect anything classy, but it does the job. I only spend time there to sleep, so two clean beds were enough for the family. Being two minutes from Time Square is a great bonus!

The front desk clerk was helpful and very polite! He made our stay. The room is just that, a room. It was clean and had a nice size bathroom. This hotel was exactly what we needed for a quick trip to see a broadway play. A block away from Times Square, you had all of the amenities that you need..

La ubicación se me hizo adecuada ya que es céntrica, está cerca el times square, y a dos cuadras el metro. Hay tiendas de 24 horas muy cerca.

La habitación la entregaron limpia y también hacían el aseo cuando lo solicitábamos, agua caliente, el staff muy amables y atentos. Solo el wifi a veces era lento más en la noches supongo porque ya todos llegábamos a esa hora :)

WiFi is spotty but my Att phone had perfect signal. The noise is loud outside but it’s New York, what do you expect lol people honk all day and fire trucks and medics stuck in traffic. That’s true to staying anywhere near Times Square, maybe paying 5 times this amount will get you a bigger hotel but I personally loved it we spent all day outside even in the rain, subway stations are all writhin 8 min walking distance. I recommend you take the air train to Jamaica station then get the train to Maddison square an walk to the hotel. Saves you the annoying uber ride or taxi. This hotel is central to everything in manhattan. Central Park ? 15 min walk, Times Square 5 min
And broadway shows and comedy clubs all within 10 min.

On our first night, during heavy rain and freezing temperatures (31°F), the windows in our assigned room would not fully close, allowing rainwater to trickle into the room. At the same time, the only heat source was a radiator with no temperature control, causing the room temperature to rise to approximately 78°F. With no ability to regulate the temperature and rain entering through the window, we were forced to turn the heat off entirely and endure the conditions for the night since it was already very late.
The second night presented another major disruption. Around 1:00 AM, a rooftop compressor from the neighboring building began cycling on and off, producing noise comparable to a semi-truck directly outside our 12th-floor window. We contacted the front desk and were eventually offered a room change at 1:00 AM.
The replacement room unfortunately had similar issues: again, there was no HVAC control beyond a radiator that could only be turned on or off, and the window air conditioner had been bagged and left in the window, allowing cold drafts and outside noise into the room.

Additionally, we were informed that the water would be shut off from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM the following day, which required us to alter our plans.
The most difficult situation occurred on our departure morning. Checkout was at 11:00 AM, and when we woke up we discovered that the water was once again shut off. This meant we were unable to shower, brush our teeth.

Staying just off of the main Times Square area and just a mile from Central Park is the perfect location. This hotel is tucked away so it feels a bit quieter, but it's still a gorgeous historic space that feels quintessentially New York City.
Beds and linens were very comfortable and the staff was fantastic.
Will absolutely be back!

The location is amazing, so closed to everything. The place is basic, no microwave, no fridge, no ice machine, just the basic, beds, bathroom, a small tv, a small table, a small nightstand, and a small closet.

Internet was ok. Property is old so the steam pipes were making noises at night. Heater is at a constant temperature so if it's too hot you need to open the window slightly. Otherwise excellent location, times square is steps away. Easy access to public transit services.

We got to this hotel and it was cramped, barely any space. There was black hair all over our bed and then when we called the front desk to bring up new sheets, they brought us the sheets and there was MORE black hair on the “Clean sheets” Also the blanket on the bed is basically like a sheet, it’s very thin. The elevator is spooky as well. It is tiny and it is loud and the door doesn’t open until you push the door open button. Will not be staying here again.

Bang slap in the centre. 1 minute away from Time Square. Theatres all around. The hotel is a little dated but is a perfect base. Clean and tidy no issues at all. There was a water shut off but was well signed in advance. Staff were friendly and warm. Helping with an extended check out and printing our boarding passes. Shops everywhere you look. Coffee, pastries etc on your doorstep. Would reccomend to others. Free wifi which is easy to get on to.

Excellent location. The only negatives were the WiFi was spotty and the water pressure from the shower would slow down resulting in a stop in stream, it’d always pick back up but it would make for much longer shower times as it happened 3-5x every shower.

Very clean room and friendly staff. Location is perfect. My only issue is the heat is supplied by a radiator, so there’s no way to control it. I had to turn on the AC to counteract the heat. It worked out, but just be warned if you’re a hot sleeper traveling in the wintertime.

We had a wonderful stay here and would definitely stay again. This is a bare-bones hotel, so don't expect frills or amenities, but it was extremely convenient, safe, quiet, and perfectly comfortable for a three-day stay. The staff were friendly and helpful. The rooms were spacious and clean, if a bit shabby (chipped paint, non-working shades, cheap area rugs, etc.). We loved the historic and charming lobby and stairwells and wish that they kept the historic details throughout the rooms and rest of the hotel (room and bathroom flooring are sadly modern and out-of-place). Fantastic location between Grand Central and Times Square.

I booked 2 rooms one standard and one superior. The first night was a standard then the remaining few days I moved into a superior room. Hotel St. James were so accommodating to me. They allowed me to leave my bags and check out a little later. I came back mid day to check into my new room and I found out that they had my new room key ready and they moved my bags and stuff into my new room. The price was affordable and the location was great. Once I checked out I was able to store my bag there until I was ready to depart NYC. Thank you.

Love this friendly, exceptionally clean hotel! The rooms/ baths have been upgraded, although no shelf/vanity area in the bath. Comfy beds. The only thing this hotel is missing is basic amenities such as an ice machine and at least a vending machine with water/soda. No heat or cooling control in the room. Love the location and cleanliness!

The hotel is a classic, older hotel that is very well maintained and kept very clean. The room was large (for a Manhattan hotel room) and was comfortable and clean. There are very few amenities in the room (no fridge or coffee maker) but o my steps from the hotel are coffee shops, delis, and restaurants. I had medication to be refrigerated and the staff provided me with ice and a container for my room. The staff was great and the location can’t be beat! I highly recommend this hotel!!!

The Hotel St. James was awesome and very reasonable for our 3 night stay! It's right around the corner from the subway in Times Square. The room was very clean and spacious for 2. There are NO amenities (self-serve ice machine in lobby) but that's OK because you can get coffee right across the street and check out Conolly's Pub (very good) just a few doors down along with a convenient store right there as well. The Hotel St. James is an older hotel with character. Definitely recommend and will book my next stay here!

The room was clean and the hotel is a great location BUT the picture Expedia posted is not what we stayed in! The room had a radiator that made noise and the shower pressure would go from ok to not working at all. The temperature of the shower was lukewarm. After a cold day outside you want a HOT shower. Talked to desk on day two no one came to check it so had a second cool shower then finally came after complained a second time just in time for us to check out. Beds were ok. Staff was friendly. I paid $25 to check in early and ended with a corner room no real windows to see out and shower issues. But it was clean! We were on the 12th floor. Elevators are old and take forever. This is an older hotel but in a convenient location. But Expedia do better tbis is not what you advertised!

I appreciated the early check in for a modest cost especially bc I was moving from another hotel during a blizzard. Check out Connolly’s Irish Pub next door for great food/drinks/service.

Great location! Famous Junior’s right down the street. The cutest little Irish pub, Connolly’s, with delicious breakfast, right next door! Staff was friendly, lobby area is nice and inviting! it was below zero and there was no heat in the room. They came and did not fix the heater but gave me a space heater which didn’t heat the room.

This hotel is perfect if you just want to stay in Times Square. It has so much charm. The rooms are clean and they were the first hotel since covid I’ve stayed that comes in to straighten your room during your stay. The staff could not have been more kind. Even being in Times Square, the noise was not bad at all. We did not have a view from our room, but again, we did not come to NYC to stay in our room.

Fun fact: parts of the movie Big were filmed here.
