Great value short break homebase.
This was the first time stopping in this hotel and there was some trepidation due to a couple of negative reviews. We need not have worried. The hotel is excellently situated and surrounded by many amenities and transport links. It is a short walk to the bustling Ku'damm shopping area, Zoo and major transit terminal.
The staff were very welcoming and always accommodating, and multilingual. The initial impression was of a small narrow building, but it is spacious and very easy to navigate. Cleaning was carried out regularly, both inside and outside the rooms. The rooms were basic but pleasant with excellent facilities. Irons and boards are available on request. There is a tv, safe and plenty of power points. The aircon is very good and was definitely needed during our stay as the temps hit 36°. The bathroom was furnished with a toilet, bidet, wash basin, bath with an integrated shower, and was again very spacious.
Next to reception they lay on water with fruit and mint for guests, and there is an enclosed seating area with cover for anyone that smokes.
On the first floor there is a 24hr vending machine supplying snacks, soft drinks and some alcoholic selections.
All in all, this was a very good hotel and I believe would suit anyone on a short break to this beautiful city as long as you are not deluded to think that the Savoy in London is the benchmark.

More of a 3 star than 4 star. No free bottled water in hotel or any extras I would expect. Also Wi-fi was very bad in the room. It was ok and staff were good but would not stay there again as Im sure I could get better for the money.

Walls extremely thin with dirty shoe marks and you hear every noise from neighboring rooms. Some crazy people kept turning the water on and off in their bathrooms every 30 seconds or so during the night. The night receptionist was passive and refused to help when I complained. The next day at check-out the rude clerk said if I was unhappy I should email the management. No manager was ever around or available while we were there. I've stayed at several much better hotels in this price range in Berlin in the recent past. Do not waste your money here.

Cetral four stars hotel in Berlin
Hotel California is a central four star hotel on one of the main streets in Berlin. It is very close to the underground and bus stations and the rooms are clean and comfortable. Customers demanding the highest standards may miss the A/C during the summer, the coffee maker and refrigerator in the room and the ice in the hallway. Service is great and available around the clock.

I booked a 4☆hotel as a special treat and was bitterly disappointed. This was a bed and breakfast hotel, nothing more, no bar, restaurant, no other facilities. I asked about food and there was nine other than breakfast. Nothing that would warrant 4 stars, it would struggle to achieve one star. Do you rate these stars yourself because I cannot think that an independent organisation would rate it so high. The Reception area was a corridor, and a pretty dismal one at that. There was no welcome just \"name\" \"sign here,\" key just handed over. On leaving, \"booking out?\" I asked for a taxi \"two minutes\" and that was the sum total of the conversation of the Reception staff. No welcome, have a safe journey, nothing. You should be ashamed of yourselves. I have stayed in hostels with more facilities, more cheerful staff and better rooms than this hotel

Very pleasant stay! The room needs some updating, but was very comfortable. The day staff is definitely much nicer than the evening staff, but they were all polite enough. The day staff was super friendly and helpful with telling us how to get where we wanted to go. The breakfast was super!! Best hotel breakfast I’ve ever had and so well presented! The hotel was very well located in the Kurfürstendamm neighborhood with several shops, restaurants, and bars nearby.

Great location and nice classic building. Unfortunately i was not able to use the wifi for the entire time; it does not work. No wifi in 2019 means big troubles.
Another big issue was the smoke coming from the room next to mine. The two rooms were separated by an interior door and despite being a “non smoking” area, the people next door were smoking inside and the smell was horrible and strong inside my room also. Despite telling the reception several times, nothing was done by them to prevent this. Very disappointing to think that a central located 4 stars in berlin cannot enforce their No Smoking policy to their guests.

The hotel was nice and comfortable. Their keycarrds always loses it's ability to open doors so you would need to go the lobby to get it re scanned. WiFi connection is terrible in the rooms stayed but these stuff can be overlooked for the goodprice

It's not genuinely 4 stars. There is no wifi. The staff are competing between themselves to be as dismissive and as uninterested as possible towards guests. Guests might as well be invisible. You go through an ice cream cafe to reach the hotel at the back.

After checking in I found that my WIFI did not work. I complained three times to the desk and finally asked for another room. I was shown a room where the WIFI worked but was told it cost an extra 10 Euros a night. I said I would not pay, that WIFI was in the ad, and if they could not provide it I would demand a refund. They asked me to return to my room and they would call. Fifteen minutes later I was able to receive WIFI. The next morning I was told that breakfast was not included and was charged an extra 12 Euros for it. It seems to me the Hotel California is trying to gouge its customers and I will avoid it in the future.

Pros: The location is great. Easy access to some of the big stations. The rooms are big for a central location. The cleaning and bar staff are friendly and the rooms are clean.

Given a filthy room stinking of stale smoke. Asked for a different room and after a bit of searching, they found one. But had to change it immediately and no offer of help. Just demanded existing key card back ASAP.

As most comment found online, the only good verdict is its location. You cannot find a happy staff there from reception to the restaurant. There was no coffee/tea facility in the room and the mini bar was empty, not even a bottle of water. On the day we were due to check out, we went to the breakfast lounge to try to find some hot coffee before getting out in the cold. Unfortunately and unhappily, we were received by a lady staff dressed in suit which I supposed to be more senior. When I explained to her that we did not want breakfast but just hot coffee. She went to a waitress and then came back with two cups. She poured some filter coffee from a thermo pot and added the milk and left the coffee cups on a high bench by the reception. We were not asked to sit by all the time. When I asked her that we would want to sit down by a table and had our coffee. She refused to let us sit because we were not having breakfast but just coffee. What on earth for a four star hotel that their guests go into the restaurant and not allow to sit down to drink their coffee. We did not drink the coffee and left with very disappointment on their services and decided to check out early to find a nice coffee shop somewhere else.

After an exhausting journey from Gatwick (flight arrived at 12noon) & from Schoenefeld airport to hotel on public transport we were hot & bothered and it would have been nice to have a wash. They wouldn't let us into our room early when we tried (after 2.00pm), even though room was almost certainly ready, they did let us leave bags until later however.
Very noisy on first night particularly until the small hours due to excessive street noise & screaming football fans (Germany won their world cup group match) car horns, fireworks, it was bonkers. Some shouty people outside joining in seemed to be from hotel (even staff? no idea).

Booked the hotel on the Internet due to the location of places in the city of Berlin. Staff were overall very friendly and helpful.
Only one comment is that there were no tea or coffee facilities. I didn’t say anything to anyone as I felt it was being too British and complaining but when an Australian couple pointed the same thing out it made me feel less picky.

Great location for getting around and experiencing much of what Berlin has to offer! The staff were great, and the room was very clean! Shower was broken so you had to hold the nozzle and the door was off the track which was a bit of a nussiance. Pillows were absolutely dreadful; but the bed was comfortable. Overall, not a bad choice by any stretch of the imagination for the price point!

Great location but staff is slow to respond to requests. Building show lack of care -- lots of dust on doors in and moldings/rails, the fan in our room was broken, and the Services Menu in the room is out of date.

Location of hotel was great and the staff were fantastic. Only issue we had was that the room was very compact and there was dampness on the shower screen. The walls were marked and needed painted. Breakfast was always fresh and there was a good selection catering for all tastes. We did get the room at a great price but this was reflected in our room as it was significantly less spacious and not as lush as those shown on their site.

The hotel employees where kind and provided us with a great service. The breakfast at the hotel was amazing and had a lot of different types of food. The location of the hotel was perfect, as we were close to almost everything. The only negative thing was the comfort of the beds, as they were hard as rocks.

From a nightmare to a nice dream
After traveling for along time, we arrived and they assigned us room 106. As we entered the room, I realized it was one of the worst rooms I have ever seen. The room so very very small, the furniture, the carpet and the bathroom were from the 50's, ugly and depressing. We asked for another room but were were told it was sold out (which I don't believe it was true). However, the next day, they transferred us to another room and it was wonderful, it felt like I was in another hotel. The breakfast was very good and the front desk was polite and helpful ( obviously , not the guy with the beard that checked us in and later refused to help us). Regarding room 106, I would not stay there even if it was for free. The location of the hotel is wonderful , in a very fashionable avenue with a lots of fancy and nice stores. So, 2 out of the 3 days were wonderful and the first day was a nightmare.

Hotel very traditional and would benefit from general refurbishment of rooms. Location made up for this, however it's worth noting there is no kettle in the rooms and the downstairs cafe charges 3 euros every time a cup of tea was had!
