Brilliant location. Room had a mini bar and was spacious. If coming over from Uk/Ireland, don’t expect Tea/Coffee in the room, that not a done thing in most Spanish hotels. Staff were extremely friendly and couldn’t have been more accommodating

Where to start? Ok...we had several choices for hotels in Bilbao but chose Hotel Puerta for 3 nights because their main selling feature was a functional outdoor pool, which my daughters wanted to use, especially since the weather was nice. The pool was in great condition but closed to public 'until end of June'. No reason given. We could not cancel or shorten our stay because it was booked via Expedia, apparently.

Parking is terrible. There's no loading area in front of the lobby and directions send you to the back in a nearby parking area. Parking itself requires a lengthy route back to the front street, a 2 minute drive to a roundabout, doubling back, taking another roundabout well past the hotel, and then making a left down a back street to the parkade, which is 17 Euros/day. Make sure you give them your licence plate (even if a rental) because they will make your return to have the privilege of parking with them. They issue a piece of paper with a scannable code for the length of your stay -it's far more complicated than it needs to be.

Staff were not helpful at all and were mostly rude. It was as if we were an inconvenience and they forgot they work in the service industry. Front desk folks would pass responsibilities to others rather than taking care.

I asked for a space to work since the rooms are small and they said I could only rent a space for 50 Euros.

Expect to pay for absolutely everything and expect terrible service, especially if you speak English.

The drains in the shower/bath stink! The whole room smells of toilet/drain smell.
The drains in the shower and bath are clean so it must be the central drains of the hotel.
I had to stuff towels down the drain to stop the room stinking.
Also the hot breakfast was cold! Every day, cold.
There are no hot plates under the hot food and the heat lamps above are too high.
I complained one day, the chef made me fresh hot eggs but it was the same the day after and day after that (stayed for 4 nights).
These things need sorting out, its not acceptable for a 4 star hotel.
The staff were very friendy and helpful which was great. The hotel was nice apart from the 2 things i just mentioned.
Parking is 15 euro a night which is not mentioned on the listing!! So be aware.
However, parking outside is free but you'll be lucky to find a space so its worth paying it in my experience.

Although the hotel is about 10km from downtown Bilbao, we had a car and could drive back and forth.
What I thought was uncomfortable was the sliding glass bathroom door, right next to the headboard of the bed. One person couldn’t go to the bathroom and turn on the light without getting the other person fully awake. Zero provacy

Short stay on the outskirts of Bilbao

We enjoyed our two night stay at Hotel Puerta de Bilbao. It was a good base to explore the city. Our triple room on the seventh floor was comfortable, and having a bath and separate shower cubicle was useful. The reception team were friendly and helpful. Our daughter loved the pool.

Helpful staff, east check-in even tho we were early, also facilitated an extended checkout til 2pm as ferry was delayed. Comfortable bed, nice bathroom with full bath plus separate shower. Basic toiletries but adequate. Good location if shopping’s your thing, IKEA, Decathlon, El Corte Ingles….& lots more. We had paid for onsite parking but there’s lots of free parking behind the hotel.

Don’t book this hotel

Avoid this hotel if you plan to visit Bilbao. Location is really bad.

Hotel does not comply with basic safety rules to avoid Covid spread. Hotel has seven floors but only two rather small elevators. Even if an elevator already has a passenger (one or a Covid “bubble” of people) the elevator makes stops to pick up more passengers. Recommendations to avoid Covid spread are not advertised on each floor, by the elevator doors and the elevators are packed with people.

Hotel is both ignorant and arrogant and has no intention to introduce restrictions to reduce Covid spread. But, at check in guests have to agree to pay an additional 50 Euros for cleaning, should they smoke a cigarette in their room.

Nice hotel, although we booked with parking when we arrived they said no parking but eventually we sorted it out. The reception was helpful and even printed me out passenger locator forms and other documents for free. We did not book breakfast and could not get a coffee anywhere in the hotel the morning after which was pretty poor. Got an evening meal and the burger was raw, we did get refund for this and told that chef had been busy, although the food did arrive shortly after ordering I would have waited longer for the food to be cooked properly.

Not 4 star hotel AT ALL

Before trying this hotel, I was using 2 stars hotel MUCH better than this one. I arrived into my room and all (hand wash, shower and bath) gel recipients were empty. No cleaning staff available, but from reception (polite and friendly staff) I got new shower gel.
Big surprise was that they have no laundry service now (COVID times), when is more important and parking is 14 Euro per day even if you don't choose cheapest room. First night I had a drunk woman neighbor and nobody, not even security personnel, could stop her making big noise. I could not sleep till 4.30AM. I moved to another hotel.

Lovely hotel with very helpful staff most of whom spoke French, Spanish and English. The family room was comfortable and spacious with a sofa bed suitable for a child. The bathroom was large with both a bath and separate shower. It is located a few kilometres from Bilbao but excellent transport links straight into the town and many large shops within walking distance. The breakfast was buffet style and had a huge variety of cooked and continental foods with gluten free options and alternative milk too. The restaurant in the evening was also excellent and reasonably priced. We would definitely stay again.

This place is a little bit out of the way (if visiting Bilbao) but is only a 15 minute metro to the centre. The staff were lovely, the food delicious and the room big and well equiped. The pool sounds as though it could do with repair as the sound of a bubbling drain was not the nicest to listen to all day, however this is a lovely hotel.

Our overall experience was good.

The hotel has no AC, something they should probably tell you at check in since we woke up at 3 a.m. melting.

The room service was OK. Not bad but not delicious either.

Staff was very nice, we left the passports in the safe by accident and they were able to get them to us at the airport.

We used this hotel the day before sailing back from Bilbao to Portsmouth. The room itself was ok'ish but was quite stuffy and the air-con didn't really function. The windows did open but the traffic noise was horrendous. Breakfast was good; parking was expensive at 13Euros. Would we stay again? Possibly, as it's not too far from the port, but it is a bit of a devil to get to.

Comfortable hotel with good sized rooms and air conditioning. The sofa bed is ready made up inside and easy to open. It is surprisingly very comfortable as sofa beds are usually not. The bathroom has a bath and separate shower cubicle.
The swimming pool is smaller than we expected but is lovely to sit and have cocktails by.
The hotel restaurant is good value and food is great.
There are restaurants and fast food outlet close by however it's a bit of a walk to get to the metro station.
I would definitely stay there again.

Where did 4 stars come from.

If English customer not many people spoke the language. Only one person on desk could speak it well enough to advise. The bar service was very poor. The food quality for breakfast at €17.99 was poor. Main evening meals was also very bland and disappointing. Waiting staff seamed very unenthusiastic. I certainly would not recommend this. No way is it 4 star hotel.

Bedroom had badly stained carpet and "Odd" mark on desk chair. The tile grout of the bathroom floor was filthy. Local area consists mainly of large shops, including Ikea etc. Very busy and you really have to park at the Hotel whose underground car park costs euros 13 per night. WIFI was only fast enough to open emails, and too slow to stream Movies. The TV had no channels in English nor instructions on what was available. This is unsatisfactory so close to a major ferry port serving the UK.

Good hotel but not too close to ferry port

It's 20 minutes to ferry port, so still a bit of a journey. Great reception staff. Great bar staff, who googled bloody Mary's and made a great one . Tea and coffee making facilities , but unfortunately no coffee! Can't comment on breakfast as the ferry was delayed so decided to leave at 6 am and travel by car.

No AC because they claimed it was cold outside. I placed a call to the reception desk to get it fixed and they gave me a ton of excuses. Parking was 15€ when the parking lot was basically empty. Lobby area was as hot as my room too although the bartender was very friendly.

Value, upgrade, convenience.

The 3 night rate was value. Our Accor Platinum tier was recognised and upgraded eventhough booked through Expedia. 10 min walk to Ansio metro, and 20 minute ride into Bibao. It convenient enough for us for Casco Viejo, Guggenheim etc.
We are happy to be back in hotel after 10pm, so location may not suitable if you like eating out, staying out late.

Hotel is located within a short distance of the BEC which in turn has a Metro Station which is a cheap and reliable way of getting into the centre of Bilbao otherwise it's a long walk! Local area is full of shops as hotel is also within the Mega Park area. Good secure carparking but is €13 per day, outside carparking all seemed to be controlled by metres. Standard of hotel was good with nice breakfast selection, friendly staff & clean modern rooms.

Good, but less well connected than we thought

The hotel is good, a standard Novotel. We had an issue at check-in because one of the children had had a birthday between booking in April and our stay, starting August 30. One member of staff raised it with my wife and said there would be extra to pay. I tried to check with Cheap Tickets about the relevant policies but could not find an appropriate email address to use. In the end, a different member of staff let us check out without saying anything about this. Otherwise, staff were very good, at breakfast and at the outdoor pool.

Our main issue was that the hotel was further from the Guggenheim and the rest of the attractions of Bilbao than we thought. It’s a 15 or 20 minute walk to the metro and no buses go immediately past the hotel. Once on the metro, everything is easy to reach and the day ticket is great value at €4.60 per person. The metro, however, stops at around 11 pm mid-week and that caught us out one night. We loved Bilbao, but on the whole would be inclined to look for a more central hotel next time.

Good location for ferry

Although the hotel is a typical Novotel - so good alround and helpful staff - there was an odd smell just about everywhere! We initially thought it was cigarette smoke in the air conditioning. We left the windows open and the air did improve but late at night it was unpleasant - best guess is smelly drains ... We didn't complain as we literally only slept in the room, showered and left; a quick stopover on the way back to the uk! I'd be reluctant to stay again though if it was the same...

Good, economical hotel for families.

I booked the Novotel b/c it offered an inexpensive room and seemed to cater to families. Overall, the room was very comfortable and adequate. The pool and play room are nice options for children. The website and staff say that the metro is a 10 min. walk, but it took us at least 20 mins. to weave through the jungle of apartment buildings. Lots of good, cheap restaurants around.

Swimming pool adequate. There are fashion discount/budget shops in the area and a few local bars. It is a 20 minute walk from Ansio Metro station no taxis.
It is relatively convenient for Bilbao if you like walking and get at a good price.

This was the last hotel I stayed at during a 3 week trip around Spain. It was a bit tricky to find (even with sat nav) and the car parking was even more difficult. The hotel itself was clean; staff were friendly and polite; the room was adequate; the breakfast was food, with plenty of choice. Room service was pricey in my opinion (13 Euros for a Club Sandwich) as was the car parking (12 Euros). The TV didn't have many English channels and the picture quality was fuzzy. Overall, a good hotel, in close proximity to Bilbao ferry port.

Fantastic hotel in a great commercial location

Very modern hotel, great furniture very clean spacious rooms with a great view on the top floor, the breakfast is €14 but if you reserve it the night before it will cost you €9 and it's very much worth it. It's situated in a commercial centre and there is everything you could want on the doorstep, metro station in close walking distance. Car park underground €13 per 24 hours. All in all a fantastic stay and will be coming again soon.

The hotel is 12 minutes walk from the Metro and about 25 minutes away from the centre of Bulbao once on the metro. The hotel was quite impersonal and the staff were a little aloof and not as helpful as my experiences in other hotels.

We were only staying one night en route to the ferry terminal. The hotel itself is fine but the area is horrible, a concrete city of tower blocks and a retail park. Mc Donald's and Aldi are beside the hotel and the area is filthy. Hotel is nice but the area is rough and I would not recommend it.

We stayed in the Novotel in Bilbao as a stop off point in readiness to catch a ferry the next day. As it was situated near the motorway we found that it was very convenient to travel to the ferry port. The cleanliness, service and location were very good. As we were only there for one night we did not check out the amenities. Wi-Fi was excellent. Evening meal and breakfast were good but not exceptional.

Great location before catching the ferry

The hotel was an excellent place to stay before catching the morning ferry ( 15 min drive away ).
The reception staff were helpful and friendly. The restaurant offered menu del dia which was good quality and well priced. Breakfast offered lots of choice. Although secure parking was charged for ( in the hotel basement ), it was half price with a loyalty card which can be done instantly.

Good forvthe ferry.

Parking at the hotel was difficult to find, but with help from reception was achieved. Bar and restaurant was also good.

The hotel was only a short drive from the ferry.

Very reasonable overall

Receptionist and cleaners were polite and helpful; breakfast had reasonable variety, although in the cooked section there was no clear distinction between meat and vegetarian - people forking up meat were quite likely to use the same utensils for the cheese and tomatoes, and not clear whether the tomatoes and eggs had been cooked together with the meat. Waitresses occasionally too eager to clear away cups and plates. Overall no problems though.

Nice hotel

We were 2 adults & 2 children. We stayed in a standard room with double & sofa bed - sofa bed a bit small for 2 children. Room was clean with facilities to make hot drink. 10 - 15 min walk to metro station which was cheap & easy to use & serves all of Biilao + beaches & surrounding areas. Several play parks close to hotel + MacDonalds & supermarket just down the road. Didn't use hotel restaurant, but used bar, as children's play room next to bar. Pool cold, but nice once you get in!

Never again

Hotel check-in: 'border-control' style, firing questions, very abrupt. At the end tossed room keys over counter. No information. Too busy/important to smile. Room: stained floor and smelly room. Room service couldn't speak English, and when a meal arrived, hugely overpriced. Would never stay here again.
