The pictures that Expedia uses for this property are not realistic. The rooms are small with limited amenities, paint chipping, and overall smelly and dirty. Outside of this hotel smells like straight sewer. The elevator situation is really bad too. It has a weight limit and my partner and I couldn’t even get on together with our luggage, though it says it can hold over 600 pounds. Also, there are only two elevators for the whole hotel.The only nice part was the breakfast in the morning on the top floor. I will never stay here again.

Very nice front desk and that was it. The sheets and pillows were stained, the bathroom smell really bad at all times, the a/c made so much noise that woke us up multiple times. I accidentally left 2 silver bracelets in the bathroom and I came back hours after I checked out and no one found them... Very unfortunate because the location is great and again the front desk staff tried to be as nice as possible.

I've stayed in over 100 hotels and hostels in multiple continents and I can say that this was confidently one of my worst experiences. This was a terrible experience. At first, I had an issue with the room type which as an error with Expedia, but the property was not helpful in trying to solve it and they were not understanding at all that there was an issue. Then, the elevators take an average of 5-10 minutes to arrive because the building has an awful structure. Then, the AC wasn't working. I had to change rooms 3 times (which they were very accommodating) but a good part of my stay was solving the AC issues. It gets very hot in Rio and they made it seem like it was my fault for wanting a room with a normal temperature during the summer, even though the rooms are supposed to have AC. The breakfast is extremely hot too, the view is spectacular but one can't enjoy it in a hot week. Some of the people working there are really nice, and some want to make it clear they don't want to help and just want the day to be over. I don't think this property would be bad in times of the year when it's not too bad and everything goes right. But if it's hot or if you need help with anything, this is not the place to go.

A totally unethical action

It was not so good because the hotel charged me twice for the same room because I made a booking error. Also the hotel com did not try to solve my problem and unethically an extra 254 US dollar was charged for my stay. Although I was told by the hotel.com agent that they will refund after cancelation and rebooking of the no extra effort was given to solve my problem. Both sides accused each other of charging the fee and put the blame on eachother.

The room was simple and colorful. Boho vibes. Really clean and comfortable. Lots of pillows. Staff was great and accommodating. The location is 1min from Copacabana beach which is awesome. Copacabana tends to be loud due to the live music, and I could hear a bit, but the hallway and corridors were quiet. Will definitely recommend this hotel to my friends and family.

I stayed with m 2 kids in a family room. The hotel was good value for money, right in the beach front and had everything we needed. Rooms are not huge but for a couple of nights it's was sufficient. So just to note there is no air conditioning and no fridge in the room.

Our main concern was the lack of cleanness of the room, especially the bathroom.
There was even an used bar soap on the bathtub.
Staff were not friendly or even receptive, and were not even able to indicate where to park the car.

Excellent location and nice room.

It was a great stay and we had a room with a beautiful view. The balcony was large with sun chairs but we spent our time on the beach. The only drawback is that it has small elevators and too many floors. Otherwise the room, service and location were perfect. I also liked the decor of our room. Well worth what we paid. I liked the shower it was spacious.

Was happy I was upgraded to a sea view. That’s the positive part. First two days there were no key cards that worked and it was terrible especially when the bathroom was outside the room.. they didn’t really apologize for the inconvenience which was horrible because u couldn’t lock your room and go take a shower without going to the reception in the bottom of the 10 story building without having to get a staff member from the reception to come help open your door. Which they seemed to really hate doing, so it never felt like it was okay to ask for access to your own private room.. I was really looking forward to this stay but I’m so disappointed now that I’m most definitely not going back. AC did not work and was very and was on when we entered the room so that’s really not environment friendly… the guy at the reception at check in was cool but…. There’s many better stays in Rio where your money is better spent. They didn’t even compensate anyone for the lack of keycards. It really feels like a prison when the guard has to walk you to your room like this, the least they could do was wire back some money or at least do something nice..

Hotel is very charming, room was lovely, but the level of service they offer at the front desk is terrible, barely hostel level. 4 staff members, not including security, standing around behind the desk while 4 people are in line to speak with front desk. No phone in room to call the front desk. Repeatedly told me my girlfriend wasn’t authorized to have breakfast with me even though we filled out an entire page of information about her. Its a real shame, the room was beautiful.

The property is excelently located in front of the Copacabana beach.
It has two elevators with low capacity (4 people each) that not satisfy the needs of the facility. Access to the breakfast place is an escalator complicated for people with mobility problems.

The staff spoke English which is a huge plus . They were polite . Luckily, i spend most of my time out of the hotel because the hotel basically only offers a room . There’s no place to hang out or enjoy the views if you don’t have a room with a sea view . There’s no pool or terrace or roof top for those in between times when you’re not at the beach or excursions. The breakfast is bad and boring . Ate there once and went the following noting to find the same thing and never went back . The location is right on the beach . Just walk out the hotel and cross the street which was awesome

1. Service: very rude on the first day. The desk attendant denied us early check-in despite my reservation on Orbitz saying we had it and would not even look at my phone to see what I was referring to. She also stopped helping us to have conversations with other staff in other languages.
2. Room: extremely small. The beds were smaller than my college dorm beds and were so close together that my friend and I were able to share a blanket (we did not want to go under the covers in those beds). The bathroom was about the same size as the bedroom with a sink the size of an airplane's and a shower with no curtain.
3. Breakfast: not the best, but the view is beautiful, and it is something. Probably the best thing the hotel has to offer besides the location which is right across the street from Copacabana Beach Port 5.

Overall a disappointing experience but it was fine since we were only there for one night.

Overall, the stay was alright. One thing that I didn’t like was when the front desk lady called me at 11:45am to tell me that my checkout was at 12pm. The reason that bothered me is because I had just spoken to her and confirmed that we were checking out at 12. I felt as if she thought we were going to stay pass 12, and I would never and have never stayed pass checkout unless it was approved. We stayed at this location previously and we had a good experience and excellent breakfast, but sometimes you can get different experiences at the same location.

Location was ok as it is right by Copacabana beach. However our room AC was not working makes it unbearable with the humid heat. You can tell a huge difference of temperature between the lobby and room, lobby was much colder. And the room is very tiny. You won’t get much recommendation from the receptionist, so do your research.

front desk staff on greeting during our stay and departing were very friendly professional and helpful. kudos to them. the area was quite safe , you are on the beach and there are a bunch of restaurants and supermarkets in the vicinity. however the breakfast was better when it used to be on the top floor with a view.

The 'new' Debret

The hotel has a great location. It is now in under new management. Changes for us is that breakfast is now downstairs in a restaurant. The breakfast is good tho I didn't like that the 'pao de queijo' is placed right under the place where people go to toast their bread. It's not hygenic. Also, the room service from the restaurant is quick but expensive. I paid R$7 for a pot of hot water.It would be good if they had a kettle and some cups in the room for guests. Wi-fi was faulty. I had to go to the lobby to call people and use the internet. The PC in the lobby takes 10 min to start. Staff were friendly and helpful. The concierge gave us some vouchers for food in a nearby restaurant which was worth a visit. Food was delicious and inexpensive.

One rude staff member can ruin the whole stay

Visiting my girlfriend in Rio and we wanted to go out partying for her birthday, thus we booked this hotel just for a place to sleep after a night out. At check-in everything was great, man who checked us in was very funny, polite, helpful, etc. He let us know that there was a one guest limit but that he would make an exception because I told him my girlfriends sister and her friend may sleep there if they can't find a ride home after the club. So when we arrive back at the hotel around 3am the new front desk guy was very rude. I don't speak Portuguese so I can't say exactly what he said but he upset the girls very much by saying they were likely prostitutes and not allowed to go upstairs to our room. I understand prostitution may be a problem in Rio but I think there's likely a better way to handle it than ambiguously making assumptions that certain hotel customers may be a prostitute. Much less how often does one guy and three prostitutes show up at the hotel? Feel bad giving a bad review because of one staff member, but really his actions were out of line.

OK Place on Copacabana Beach

This might be one of the lower end Copacabana hotels on the beach, so it is not at all ritzy if that is important for you. The upstairs hallways were in sorry shape. There appear to be two types of rooms: those with great views of the beach, and those with views of brick walls. We did not know this when making our reservation through Rocketmiles, and were given a small room with a view of bricks. Fortunately, the hotel was not full and we were able to get a room with a great view after paying a stiff upgrade. The room itself was in good condition. The breakfast buffet on top floor has great view but the buffet itself was very mediocre. Conclusion: an okay place if you want to stay on Copacabana beach and save money in comparison to higher end options.

The only plus of the hotel is its beach location.

Hotel is a bit decadent with its decor, furniture n all soft materials for bath n bed. There were bad designed installations: water flooded the bathroom every time one showered. Bed linen n towels of bad quality n a very simple breakfast. I could not receive WIFI in the bedroom. Staff could not speak sufficient English.

No \"Free Wi-Fi\"

\"Free Wi-Fi\" is advertised by the hotel -- but our room on the 7th floor did not have functioning Wi-Fi at any time during our four day stay. At times there were one or two bars on the Windows icon, but not enough to sustain a connection. We stayed at the Debret several years ago, and had the same problem, so this is not new, and nothing has been done about it. Wi-Fi does work in the lobby.

The smell in the neighborhood overall was awful, but they didn't do anything to keep the smell inside good at least. the stuff in the reception was very slowly and they are a little bit rude also.
the good thing is that the hotel is very close to the beach, but they didn't offer any facilities as towels or chairs for the beach.
and they didn't change the towels in the room.

It was very good for the price. There is a lot of construction going on around the hotel. A museum practically next door, roadwork directly in front, even inside the hotel, in the lobby and on various floors there was construction. The lobby is not very inviting but the people are really nice. The rooms are clean and comfortable. You do not need to spend a lot of time in your room in Rio. Directly across the street is the Copacabana beach and all the fun of Rio is all around you. It was only about 45 minutes from the airport and 15-20 minutes from everything else you would want to see - Sugarloaf, Cristo, Santa Tereza, Lapa....

Check in problem drama! I picked this hotel for a variety of reasons, price was good for a hotel on Copacabana beach, no hints of check-in problems (there were in reviews for a lot of the others). When I got there, the attendant told me that my credit card had been declined and so they'd cancelled my room (I had not been informed that there had been any problem, and Expedia didn't show any issues). I called Expedia (International call), and informed them and was in a frantic search for a new room. After they called the hotel staff repeatedly, the attendant finally came over and said (in better English suddenly), that he had been mistaken, and that the room that had been cancelled wasn't mine (and he asked me to tell Expedia to stop ringing his phone!). A lot of drama to get in, but we got our room (they had to rush make it up as we got to the room). Beyond that, it was good. Room was in good condition. Good breakfast overlooking the beach in the morning. Towels for the beach. Restaurant just in front of the hotel downstairs had great food!

Friendly staff (very helpful), the front desk staff speaks English. When I asked for a late checkout they extended it for me with no issue. They made me feel safe and were always very polite. I would definitely stay here again if I came back to Rio

was a good stay for two days until we found something more permanent. Room was basic, decor was bright and fresh. It was a little expensive but I assume that was the time of year. Fantastic ocean view room over Copa, so that made up for some of the cost.

I was called at 11:00, 11:10, then again at 11:50 to reminded that checkout was at noon; this was annoying. Wifi Internet Connectivity was not available in the rooms, and I could find the ssid in the lobby, I could not connect.

Great location....this is a budget motel at best.

Stayed one night for World Cup so I just needed a bed to sleep. Great location, but this was all. I booked here due to free internet, it was free, but the password would not work. When I called that night and again the next morning, was told sorry, they do not know what to do. So I had to pay at an internet cafe down the street. If you are even thinking about an upgrade, do not do as I did, try at the hotel. What I could have gotten for an extra $15.00 on Hotels.com, the hotel charged an additional $42.00 (corner room, 9th Floor, great views of the beach). Free Breakfast was something my cat would have not eaten, wet, runny eggs with hotdogs covered with a mysterious red sauce. Cereal was stale. Again, not a big deal, walked to a restaurant for breakfast. The bed that was something a Brazilian Prison might have used at one time.

The bedding was well past it's use by date the mattress must have been 20 plus years old. The hotel staff wanted to know whether I wanted a cab to get to the airport and that it would cost $40 . The cab meter showed $27 .the cab driver said the fee is $40 as organized and the difference went into the pocket of the hotel

Location of the hotel was great ( across the road (literally) from Copacabana) . It was close to many places to eat and other amenities we found useful. The hotel rooms itself were not in the best of conditions but for the location and price we paid I think it it was a sacrifice I would make again. Overall if you are not fussed about top quality and want location location then Hotel Debret for sure.

Although we were not impressed by the condition of the hotel, the hotel staff were polite, friendly and accomodating. The room furnishings were poor and the 'white' net curtains were a dirty grey. We were staying in what was classed as a superior room but it did not meet acceptable standards. One redeeming feature was the view from the top floor dining room where the food was quite good.

I have given this hotel a relatively poor overall rating owing to the staff: I found them to be quite arrogant, inattentive and apathetic. Sadly, that affected the overall experience.

If poor customer service does not worry you, it is a relatively good place to stay: great location, superb breakfast (complete with nice views) and clean rooms (although the beds are far from the most comfortable in the world).

I'm sure the fact that I was held up at knifepoint twice within 50-75 metres of the hotel was a case of bad luck rather than anything else. That certainly was not the hotel's fault!

Avoid this hotel

I was unlucky enough to have stayed at the Debret Hotel after getting a positive initial impression based on the pictures and hotel description on this site. The hotel hasn't seen a coat of paint in decades, the lifts barely work and tend to have a mind of their own. The breakfast is particularly bad - one hot and humid day we had the air conditioner dripping condensation water onto the food being served! The staff are very unhelpful and will only recommend local amenities that have agreed to pay them a commission for their recommendations. There were electric wires exposed everywhere, the floors were dirty, the carpets are filthy. This hotel is a health hazard. Stay well clear of this hotel, which is a shame as it is well located, but this is all it has going for it.

Low quality and high prices.

The hotel is a very low quality hotel and way over priced. The reception area isn't bad, but the rooms are broken down. Coming from the US this place is lower quality to the many motels in the US. The best part of this place is the restruarant upstairs. I would never stay here again.

Great Ocean VIew

The triple suite has a great value for the price, larger room and nice ocean view. It is little old, but great locations (Beach front & 10min walk to Ipanema) Staff are very friendly and helpful.

This is NOT 4 Stars at all

I had to move twice to get an ocean view room since the prior ones were outdated and smelly. The one I got was the only ocean view room which was 'up dated' I was told. Yet it had a bathroom that looked dirty and was even creepy to shower in. The hotel is on the beach but right across a seweage elevation station and when open the window guess what you smell. The staff is disorganized and in this high season (early Jan) the mgr and CEO were both on leave and the receptionist was running the hotel, so you can imagine. I tried twice to move to other hotels but there was nothing good availble given the high season except very expensive presidential suites. Bottom line: if you are looking for a 4* this is NOT it, barely a 3*.

Location & view only

The hotel is pretty old and not very well maintained.
We walking into our room to find a used tissue on the floor and a bathroom that needed one hell of a scrub, The tissue was never cleaned and remained in the same spot for the duration of our stay! Talk about cleanliness.
Breakfast was ok, nothing to highlight.

Otherwise, the hotel is very well located if you're looking to be accross the street from Copacabana beach.
If you get yourself a good deal, are not too fussy about cleanliness and like to have a beach view, then Debret is to be considered for sure.

It's oldy worldy, but ...

The room was a bit of a surprise when we walked in ... very sparse, but very clean sort of oldy worldy! The personnel service was excellent! and on a par with the breakfast, accompanied by a breathtaking view of Copacabana Beach. The beds must have been very comfortable, but after partying madly every night ... who knew!

Great location, room desperately needs remodeling

I spent 2 nights in this hotel in Oct 2011 during a business trip. The location is great, in the middle of Copacabana and right by the beach. The view of the bay from the restaurant during breakfast is unbeatable. The price was good considering the options at a really bad time (Rock in Rio made most hotels unavailable).

Unfortunately the rooms have not been updated in decades. They are clean but totally obsolete. The mattress was tiny and so old that I had to sleep on the edge to get some firmness.

Everybody at the hotel was kind and the breakfast, included in the rate, was a decent buffet.

If you are picky with the room I would not stay here unless all you care about is the location & view or if you are on a tight budget and the price difference with any alternative is very significant.

Quartos pequeno para família, não tem frigobar só para quartos que eles alugam diretamente, no café da manhã pouca oferta, fora que os hóspedes não podem usar todas as mesas que ficam reservadas para quem paga por fora, achei um desrespeito sempre viajo com café incluso isso nunca me ocorreu de ter que aguardar enquanto tem mesa reservada, outro ponto a limpeza é péssima acredito que o grupo de apoio é pouco para um prédio de muita demanda, os funcionários educados sem problemas algum , mas o é o elevador que não funciona corretamente, um quebrado o outro com muita demanda não atende nossa necessidade, ter que subir as escadas o tempo todo, o prédio está necessitando de de reforço urgente, não volto para essa hospedagem

Boa localização, café da manhã bom, nos fornecem frigobar, porém se saímos do quarto, o mesmo é desligado, devido o sistema automático de energia do quarto. Achei meio sem sentido, visto que seus itens não permanecem refrigerados, deviam deixar essa tomada fora do sistema automático de desligamento. No geral, um bom hotel.

O hotel em si é bem pequeno, o elevador só comporta 3 pessoas, tudo é muito apertado, mas o quarto em que ficamos era bem aconchegante.
Não tem TV nem frigobar.
Meu quarto não tinha vista, mas no restaurante do cafe da manhã tinha e a vista era linda.
