The ocean view room was so outdated and badly in need of redecoration. The lighting in the room was rubbish. The bathroom fan didn’t work so everything steamed up. The hotel ‘looks’ nice on the surface but a lot of the staff were pretentious and it felt like you were doing them a favour by staying there. So overpriced for what it is - def look at other options as there are a lot of better alternatives.

The rooms were great — comfortable, modern, and beautifully maintained. The location is amazing, right on Copacabana Beach. Breakfast was delicious with plenty of fresh options. The pools are perfect for relaxing, and the live music creates a fantastic atmosphere. Highly recommended!

The city-view rooms really need updating, and they are small. They seem smaller than the size stated on the website. They do not offer any free upgrades as stated on the Expedia website. The restaurants are good but very expensive. Not as good as other Fairmont hotels. Customer service could definitely be improved.

We arrived to be given an accessible room which we had not asked for and didn’t want. It also had a tiny corner balcony. We were told there was no alternative other than a twin room. We had paid a lot of money for king room with a sea view. The bar and pool area get very busy and you have to ask for a table each time even as a guest - they have a rope to cordon off the area. Most staff were lovely but on a couple of occasions became aware of staff talking about us and laughing at us. The rooms are getting a little tired and housekeeping only seem to do the bare minimum. We had a storm one night which bought dirt and debris onto the balcony. This wasn’t mopped for the rest of the time we were there. A huge shout out to the guys that greet you when you arrive at the entrance. A lovely warm welcome - they were wonderful. Overall, we certainly don’t think we got value for money and certainly wouldn’t return

Overall, I really recommend this hotel. About 95% of the staff were courteous, kind, and genuinely happy to help, which made the stay very enjoyable. The only downside was the remaining 5%—a few employees who didn’t smile, didn’t greet guests, and seemed bothered when asked for anything. In particular, some of the pool bar staff consistently looked like they disliked their job, which was disappointing.

That said, everything else was excellent: the location is perfect, the rooms are beautiful, and the cocktails were great quality. I would absolutely stay here again.

Our stay here was superb! We had not really understood ahead of time what all was included if we upgraded to Gold Level, but it was SO worth it! We had a private check in area, which also included an exclusive breakfast and happy hour area and access to the infinity pool. You have an incredible view of the top of the Copacabana beach from the infinity pool.

The absolute highlight of our stay was the welcome, ongoing assistance, overall helpfulness and kindness from Lucas Pereira (knowing we wanted to include his name in the reviews, once we found out there were several Lucas's who worked there we asked if we could have his last name or initial).

We had such a fabulous stay! I would 100% recommend this hotel.

I had high hopes for this hotel, but unfortunately, my stay fell well short of expectations and significantly impacted my trip. The hotel staff did attempt to address some issues by offering a room upgrade when we encountered problems with disruptive guests nearby, which I appreciated as a gesture of goodwill. The room itself was not in the condition I expected for the price point. The television wasn’t functioning properly upon arrival, and it took intervention from the IT team to discover that the WiFi wasn’t connected to either TV in the room - a basic amenity that should have been verified before guest arrival. During my stay, we experienced two separate power outages - one at 1:30 AM and another at 7:00 PM. While power issues can sometimes be beyond a hotel’s control, the frequency was disruptive to our schedule and comfort. There was active construction taking place during our stay, which created noise and disturbance. Unfortunately, no alternative accommodations or compensation were offered to mitigate this inconvenience. Perhaps most disappointingly, several service requests went unaddressed despite multiple attempts to follow up with staff. This lack of responsiveness made it difficult to resolve the various issues we encountered. While I understand that hotels can face unexpected challenges, the combination of technical problems, infrastructure issues, construction disruption, and poor follow-up service created a stay that didn’t meet basic hospitality standards.

I stayed 15 nights at Fairmont Rio, and my experience was extremely disappointing.

As a Black woman, I was repeatedly treated differently from other guests. Each time I went to the Spirit Copa Bar by the pool, staff demanded my room number, phone, and even email — making me feel as if I didn’t belong there. Meanwhile, white friends who visited me were never asked any questions, even though they weren’t guests at the hotel. When I raised this with a manager, instead of apologizing, he insisted it was “standard procedure.” Clearly, it was a procedure applied only to me.

To make things worse, after I returned home, I found an unauthorized charge of USD $7,726.97 on my credit card from this hotel, even though my stay was already fully paid.

This was supposed to be a luxury vacation, but instead it became emotionally draining and deeply hurtful. No guest should go through discrimination or financial abuse like this.

Let down by staff and policies

The rooms and pool areas are fantastic. What lets the hotel down is the speed of the staff. We waited long periods for drinks by the pool and in the bar at night. We also asked for our bill 3 times before we went to walk out after waiting half an hour.

We came here for a special occasion after staying at the Pestana Rio Atlantica, the remainder of our holiday.

The rooms and facilities at the Fairmont are far superior, but the service and prices are far better at Pestana. Both have excellent locations and views on Copacabana Beach.

Another small detail is non smoking policies by the pool at Pestana are far better.

Great Location, but need an update.

I recently stayed at the Fairmont Rio for a week. Overall, it was a pleasant experience, but the hotel is showing its age. The entire property, including the rooms, feels extremely tired, as if it hasn’t been renovated or properly maintained in at least 20 years. Many details were worn or damaged: the basin had chipped edges, some facility signs were broken, and general wear-and-tear was noticeable throughout.

Worse, there seemed to be an issue in every room. My original room had an air conditioner that rattled nonstop, making it impossible to sleep properly for two nights. The staff were friendly and promptly moved me to another room, but in the new room, the shower drain didn’t work, leaving a pool of water after every use that only cleared when housekeeping came.

That said, the location is unbeatable. The hotel is surrounded by fantastic restaurants and plenty of breakfast spots. It’s also just a short stroll to both Copacabana and Ipanema beaches, making it ideal for exploring.

The hotel breakfast was disappointing - very basic for the price. You can find much better quality and variety outside at a fraction of the cost. On the plus side, the gym was well-equipped, with dumbbells up to 26kg, four 20kg plates, and a Smith machine, a great perk for fitness enthusiasts.

The Fairmont is a beautiful property with lovely views from the restaurant and an amazing spa. The Amazon experience treatment in the spa was the best three hours I’ve had in many years. My only issue is that the lost and found has been unresponsive and I left something in the room that I would like to get back.

We stayed at the Fairmont for 4 nights. The location between Copacabana and Ipenema beach is fantastic. Our room had a view onto the sugarloaf and we enjoyed sitting on the balcony watching people on the beach and in the water. We only had one dinner in the hotel restaurant. It was amazing. The breakfast buffet had a good selection. Rooms were spacious and clean and the beds comfortable. The shower pressure was excellent. But most importantly, the staff were always helpful and nice. I highly recommend this hotel.

The doors to balcony are not good enough considering the rooms are above the pool/restaurant - they need to improve/update them- the hotel was very busy as it was the end of Carnival but the noise went very late into the night. The room was comfy nothing special and def not as good as other Fairmonts.

Stayed at the Fairmont on a number of occasions and was very excited to stay at again. WE were contacted in the run up to the stay that room upgrades were available - we responded on every occasion accepting the upgrade. On arrival at reception on the day of arrival the Reception had no idea about the request even showing the emails. We went to our confirmed room and entered into a room with a Smell of DAMP , the floor was wet and bedding very Damp. We called reception immediately and told no other rooms were available. I emailed a manager and had a response within a few hours offering to show me a few other rooms (miracle after none were available) - we moved rooms that day and later started to realise that the Damp issue , is around the entire hotel. We heard from a few other guests with the same problem and not something that you would expect from a hotel at this standard. Standard of service around the restaurants and pool was awful. Super slow and priortising outside guests. Room service was shocking - we ordered a cheese board which arrived an hour later with no bread , requested bread and another hour later nothing received. Really sad to see a hotel of this level become like this. Really hope to see things improve as its a great location for a hotel and has great potential.

We were a little worried about going to Rio with some of the advisories, but we had an amazing trip. The staff at the hotel were wonderful, the dining and shopping amazing and the beaches unparalleled. My husband even forgot his phone in a cab and it was returned within the hour! Went to a fotbol game and the experience was awesome. We would highly recommend Rio and the Fairmont.

The hotel was quite nice and in a good location. We enjoyed the spa. However, it’s overpriced. At this price range, I expected more in terms of service and food quality. The breakfast is quite limited, and the food all around the hotel is poor compared to the price you pay. There was also a bad smell in the room, and the room is quite noisy. When we complained, they came and sprained the room and that was it, but the smell remained All in all, the hotel is not bad and we had a nice time, but I doubt I will return at this price point.

My wife and I recently spent 5 nights at the Fairmont Copacabana in Rio de Janeiro, and we enjoyed our stay. We were warmly welcomed upon arrival by the bellmen Rogerio, Jose Carlos, and Mauricio.

Our check in was very smooth with Carol, who was wonderful. She was able to get us an early check in. Additionally, she arranged an early check in for my elderly brother’s early morning arrival the next day for a half day fee. His actual check-in was with a different person, and was fairly smooth, although I was a bit disappointed by the location of the room.

The hotel is super clean, and of course, has a wonderful view of Copacabana. The facilities are upscale and probably the some of the best that we have experienced in a hotel stay during our decades traveling in Brazil. The service was good, but not outstanding, with one great exception. Edna served us at breakfast one morning and she was outstanding! We were waiting on family to arrive and they were delayed, and she brought us coffee, some breads, and juices, without us even asking, and did so with a lovely smile and elegance. Edna is an example of what unpretentious 5-star service should be about. Something was missing on the service side from most of the staff, including the concierge and other servers. My wife is Brazilian and I speak Portuguese, so it was not a language issue.

We would overall recommend the hotel, and would return, albeit with lower expectations.
