We really enjoyed staying here. The inside of the building is beautiful, and our bed was very comfortable. Staff are very nice and helpful.
It was hot when we stayed and the bedroom air con functioned, but not brilliantly.

The parking was not available so assume it rarely is and but the car park on Bold Lane is close enough but about £11 for an overnight stay.
The hotel felt pretty deserted but fine and felt safe enough.
The shower temp wasn’t consistent but not extreme.
Bed comfortable and slept well but black out curtains would be so beneficial especially in June.
Check in was fine and the receptionist was lovely.
Tea coffee basic but plentiful.
Two bottles of water were very much appreciated.

Staff were lovely and friendly and keen to help. After booking a 'Junior Suite' for a birthday gift, I was a little disappointed by the size of the room. I am not sure what made it a suite as it looked like a small double to me. We were on the ground floor with the view of a car park which a prison transporter would regularly pick up and drop off.
Beautiful building internal and out. Breakfast had everything you needed. Stored our bags after check out until our train. Great location for City Centre

The hotel is centrally located and everything in the downtown is easily walkable. The hotel itself is a really nice building but it did seem a bit tired. Could really do with a refresh plus something outside (flags,
flowers, etc. ) to make it seem more welcoming. A big setback was the inoperable air conditioning for our entire stay - which we were not advised of until after we asked how to get it working. This occurred during the hottest bank holiday on record and the heat inside our room was punishing. That being said the staff were all friendly and helpful.

The bedroom was on the small side. The ensuite looked like it had been recently updated unlike the bedroom which was a little tired. The air conditioning was not available. The best thing was it's location. Everything else was a reflection of the reasonable price

Must have been a beautiful hotel in its day but now it’s very tired, no staff, no working lift, or working aircon, lightbulbs blown. Such a shame really because the location is ideal and there’s a cheap carpark around the corner

Agree with all the other reviews - nice historical building in a central area, and lovely friendly staff. But room was rundown - dusty throughout, musty odour, lots of rust and limescale in the bathroom.
Bed was comfy.
A fine experience.
Lift wasn't working.

The hotel room and entire top floor was incredibly hot which is not nice in hot weather, this wouldn’t have been a problem if the air conditioning wasn’t broken on the entire top floor. There was also no way to change the temperature of the water in the shower so that was also very hot and it gave off a strange smell when used. Hotel lift was also broken the entire weekend and being on the third floor and no staff offering to help in a 4 star hotel seems a bit of a let down

This was a small friendly hotel in a good location. The staff were pleasant and we felt that we had value for money. The building is in need of a little maintenance, and the cooked breakfast was ample. There were a few parking spaces available at no addional charge.

The staff were friendly however it took a long time to check in as there was only ome person,then i was dissapointed as id booked a superior room and the room definetley didnt represent this,there was no plug that fit for the bath no hair dryer .The hotel is lovely and has some great features but the rooms are very basic and tired and in need of a re vamp ,the bed was very large though

There was thick dust on the bathroom door, towels and bedding had black dirt marks on and the carpet hadn’t been hoovered and covered in bits. Walls and skirtings really dirty. This is no way a 4 star hotel.
On the plus side the staff are friendly

The room was very comfortable and a high standard of cleanliness. The bar was very well stocked and the staff very friendly and helpfull. Parking looked ok but wasn’t an issue for me as I came on train. Many thanks for a memorable stay. Would highly recommend staying at this hotel.

Very basic, run down & out dated. Someone else hair in the shower - stains on soft furnishings. No atmosphere. Beautiful building drastically lacking some TLC great location - fine for an overnight stay if visiting for an event, and spending no time in the hotel. Wouldn’t pay more than £40 a night - stay at the nearby premier inn

Really lovely building with friendly helpful staff and excellent value for money. With a deep clean (particularly in the bathroom) and some renovation to bits of tired infrastructure (chipped furniture, old carpet), this could be really excellent and well worth twice the current price.

We managed to check in early and get the car parked at the front of the hotel, thanks to the friendly staff. Easy to find, and in a good location, being a short walk from the city centre restaurants and pubs. A quiet location however, with a comfortable, clean room. The entrance hall and staircase are magnificent
Breakfast next day was fine, and excellent value for the price.

A heritage hotel with interesting history as a bank and courthouse, amazing staircase and overlooked by the cathedral, walk to restaurants in city centre. Quiet location but limited metered on street parking. Cosy rooms, comfortable and good quality beds. Cooked breakfast but would have liked to see fresh juices and fruit as healthy alternatives. Very friendly and welcoming staff. Would definitely stay again.

We were attracted by the appearance of the property on Expedia and the reasonable price. But when we arrived, after check-in time, the person at the desk disappeared for several minutes to find out if the room was ready. We reached the room and were disappointed. It was tiny, with no space to put a suitcase down except on the bed. Thus it was too small to be a single, never mind a double. The bathroom was clean and pleasant, but there were chipped tiles. More importantly, the safe didn't work, which I reported, but the person at the desk said that nothing could be done as they didn't have the master key. Did this mean it would not work in perpetuity? The lobby area and staircase were very elegant, but a bit dark and exceedingly quiet. Overall, a handsome building, but a very disappointing room.

This is a classic case of fading grandeur. Firstly, there is very little parking (4 cars) so if you arrive when these are taken you are directed to a secure multi-story carpark. This can be expensive as it charges until 6pm, then there is an overnight charge (£7:50) and a third charge after 8am. Cost me nearly £15. Then the rooms are tiny. Our double room had only 1 chair ... there was no room for a second one! We didn't eat there as there is a Wetherspoons 5 minutes away. One of the staff had very little English. Yes, it has been a grand place but it is now living on its laurels. Better can (easily) be found.

The hotel was central and close to town centre.All the staff were very polite, courteous, and helpful. I was blown away by having a 'bath' in my standard room. Also, having a 'Key' and not a card entry was a nice touch.

Room has no air con. Altho there is a unit in room hotel confirmed they don’t have aircon. Bathroom has no fan so smells from going to loo for a poo stay. Breakfast omelette was dry and filling limited and everything self service except for the cooked breakfast . Water in rooom was nice touch if you buy a drink from bar you have to pay. They didn’t tell me this until I was walking up the stairs to go to my room

The reception is lovely but that’s where it ended.
The rooms need some re-decoration.
The A/C does not work and was extremely hot.
Both bedside lamps did not work and also one in the bathroom.
Breakfast really was poor- food quality and over cooked eggs, not great when you’re having eggs Benedict and the eggs are hard boiled!

Not really sure this is a four star hotel.

Staff however were friendly and polite!

We had an ok stay. We accidentally got sent to a room that wasn’t made up and we were offered a drink while that was sorted out. The room we did get was ok, but the shower was covered in orange and black mould, not just in the corners but the grout throughout. Otherwise the service was great, the staff were really trying hard. Breakfast was great, you got to choose from a menu. It definitely wasn’t a four star experience but not terrible either.

Great grade II listed building with stunning lobby and stairwell area. Nicely presented room with all the finishes expected of a 4* hotel. Pleasant staff and a good breakfast offering.

Not a 4 star !!

Could be a lovely hotel. It needs a bit of tlc. We booked a superior double with king size bed, on arrival we asked if there were any upgrades. Which seemingly we were given for free ? When we went to our room it was small and pokey and not very nice at all. Complained at reception and we were then given the room we had booked( before upgrade) this was far more spacious and a better view. The air conditioning wasn't working in the hotel, but we did have a fan supplied, which helped. My wife went for a bath, then we couldn't get the plug out !! Breakfast wasn't to great either. No fruit or pastries. All in all, not a great place to stay. It could be as the close proximity to town is the reason we chose it. But definitely not 4 star. !!

Extra touches which improve the quality of stay

As a coffee lover there is no skimping on the supplies - in some hotels you have to find the nearest shop to buy coffee
Recommend for close to the centre

Just ok, needs tidying up and a better breakfast.

Stayed in this hotel a few times over the last 10 years for one night stops. It's in a great location for anything you're doing in Derby City centre (going to watch DCFC for me). Lots of pubs and restaurants nearby, easy access to train station, buses and taxis. However, the standard of the building itself has deteriorated. It's looking tired and in need of decorating/refurbishment. My room windows were filthy, pigeon poo on the ledge. Walls and carpets need replacing/decorating and breakfast is very average. Orange juice came in a tiny plastic carton with all of two mouthfuls, water for tea from one of those push to pour big flasks (not hot enough). Minimal parking (4-5 cars) so you'd have to use Bold Lane car park which is very secure and just a couple of minutes walk but extra cost. Staff were attentive and friendly but it's expensive for what it offers. Leonardo just 5 minutes walk away is much better for similar price, it was sold out on this occasion.

Derby Delight.

A fabulous build converted in to a great hotel located in the historic Catherdral quarter. We had a junior double at the back for one night. Super quiet comfy bed and fab shower and bath. Definitely recommend. Located near some great old historic pubs,art galleries the amazing Museum of Making and the Cathedral.
