The overall hotel was fine and it’s in a very good central location, but there were a few issues that made the stay very uncomfortable. The room was extremely overheated even in February to the point where we had the window open constantly for 3 days and the fan on overnight to sleep. I woke up with a migraine after the first night which happens when I get overheated when I sleep which ruined the second day. The pillows were hard and lumpy and the spare soft pillow was like a tissue it was so flat and I also woke up with a sore neck. The shower was lukewarm at best no matter how hot we turned it up.
If you like a warm room and hard pillows it might be the hotel for you though!

Areli hotel no tiene aire acondicionado funcionando , demasiado calor , sin luz en el pasillo de los elevadores y solo 2 toalla en la habitación que era para dos . Me cambiaron 2 veces de habitación y sin aire ambas . La señorita de la recepción trato de ayudar pero no apareció ningún manager a resolver ni pude dormir del calor y pagué $170 , ni lo recomiendo para nada , me ofrecieron agua como compensación por la molestia . Me pareció muy poco profesional y responsable este hotel .

Our stay at the Novotel Hotel in Ghent, the Netherlands, 15-17 Oct 2025 was excellent. With the exception of a couple of people, overall, the hotel's staff was friendly and hospitable. The photos matched the room -- clean and roomy.

The mirror in the bathroom was a foot higher above my head (5 foot 2 inches) and the lighting was not bright enough. A light in the entrance way was broken, and not fixed during our 2 day stay, even though a cleaning staff member knew and promised to have it fixed. When requested our daily supply of coffee packages, both the front desk (condescending) and the cleaning staff were not readily responsive. BTB Fresno, CA, USA

I rarely leave reviews. I stay in hotels all over the world and I've worked in 44 countries at the last count. I've stayed in the Novotel Gent before, even hosted a week-long conference here in 2023 not that made any difference.
In short the hotel is over-priced and under-loved. Specifically I payed 200 Euros a night for a hotel with a hole in the carpet, skirting board hanging off, scruffy, unkempt paint flecks (missing paint) in the bathroom and plastic curtains (with dirty marks). If I was paying 100 Euros a night I might not grumble, but come on this is a Novotel.
The night staff on my arrival was quite insistent that I pay in full on my arrival at just before midnight. I know some hotels may have this 'rule' but it might have been a bit more considerate, say empathetic to ask about my journey (long tiring journey) and say \"don't worry sir we know you have stayed here in the past, pay in the morning.\"
I had problems with my business card and was put under pressure to pay the next day. When I managed to contact my bank and sort my card issues I came to pay the balance on Thursday morning to be met by \"Oh I can't do it now, it's too difficult, pay in full when you check out\".
I also asked to change my room on Thursday. I was met by I can't do that you have to come back when my manager is here. Super: you can demand my money but you can't address the poor state of my room. It wasn't helped by the words \"I can't help you I am only following orders\". Awful choice of words

Ghent festival

Got in early and the room was suitable, big and reasonable, but a little dated.
Only one towel, so rang down, didn't make a fuss as let in before 3.00pm
The room was facing the bell, near St Nicholas church, so relevant to noise from the various Ghent Music Festival sites, but the sound proofing was excellent, so didn't bother us.
The room was very hot and the heating / cooling system was old, noisy and inefficient, and the hotel was aware of this as there was a large fan, which only dissipated the hot air around the room, and the window if opened allowed the noise in.
Second day we had to ask for two towels again as one only left, and only one tooth brush etc.

We booked the sauna in the hotel, free which was great on Saturday, and did the same on Sunday.
When we trekked back across town for 7pm, only to be told it was already taken and no record of our booking.

The staff went above and beyond to fullfil all my needs. The temperature in the room was rather cold (very cold weather outside) and I couldn't figure out how the air con works. The receptionist listened to me carefully and then then sent someone to only adjust the temperature in the room but left an additional heating unit in my room should if I need it. the only reason I gave 4 starts for comfort was the noise from outside. The location is central and I had a wonderful view from my room. It was just a bit loud. Maybe should have brought earplugs. Apart from that, both receptionists I had the pleasure of talking to were extremely welcoming, nice and polite. Really appreciate it, thank you! :)

The staff we were wonderful - they responded to an advance email requesting a walk in shower immediately.Room very comfortable & spotless with good bed & then excelled themselves as when I got to train station to leave I realized my phone had slipped out of my pocket in back of cab. On it were my Eurostar tickets & all personal & banking stuff - I called the hotel who immediately called the cab company & alerted the driver who found the phone & brought it back to station - disaster averted - I couldn’t praise them enough nothing to much trouble - outstanding service in great stay

The soundproofing is very bad, since the keys are physical and the doors slam shut automatically, the place is very loud. It’s not for light sleepers. And wifi signal is very poor and keeps shutting off. I don’t recommend

A nice stay, but a few items to address.

This was a nice hotel in the center of Ghent. Everything in the area was walkable (restaurants, attractions, convenience, etc.). I loved Ghent. My trip was during August so it was the high season for tourists. I would love to come back at a less busy time.

The hotel was fine (clean, safe, etc.). The only real issue were the sink and shower drains. It took several minutes for them to drain. When showering you were basically standing in several inches of water. Disgusting! Same for the sink. The faucet couldn't be on for more than 15 second without the sink filling up with water. This place seriously needs to snake its drainage pipes.

Centrally located hotel, great for getting around Ghent. Hotel is a big dated. Bathroom was a bit gross - grout was dirty & moldy, plumbing didn’t drain well and could smell sewer gas. Towels had an odd smell to them. Could’ve just been my room. Fine for a young guy, but I wouldn’t have been super thrilled if I was on holiday with a partner or something. Otherwise, room was spacious. Weird toilet and shower layouts though (in seperate rooms). Location was the best part of the hotel.

This hotel was disappointing in a number of ways. The location is excellent, the value reasonable, and the staff friendly. and they tried to be helpful. But the condition of the room was less good than we expected. There was masking tape around one of the doors where it has recently been painted. Some of the furniture was quite faded, and of poor quality. And our room wasn't cleaned one of the two days we were there. The bed was made, but the towels weren't changed, the floor wasn't hoovered, and the tea/coffee wasn't refilled. It was fine, but I was suprised by these small failings.

Intruder and unprofessional staff

I stayed 4 nights and on 3rd night I had an intruder enter my room at 8.45am. I immediately reported it to reception (Weil) was extremely unpleasant and dismissive, told me it was housekeeping without checking or why they would come to my room so early, then hung up on me. I called back to ask his name and said I wanted to file a complaint about the situation and against his attitude, he told me he never gets in trouble and to stop disturbing him from doing his job - who knew helping a guest deal with a situation was not in his job duties??
I finally got hold of the duty manager , Rodolfo at 11.30pm (this is how poorly staffed they are), he was nice enough to apologise but made excuses that he was on night shift and had to come in due to staff calling in sick, he had already done another night shift and had a family, sleep and admin he hadn't checked emails blabla (sounds like a Novotel problem not mine) and he would follow up with Weil and housekeeping then next morning and leave me with a report. I insisted Weil needed to apologise (he would be on morning shift when I checked out), Rodolfo agreed.
Next morning I check out, it is Weil, he looks at me blankly when I asked for Rodofos report, I gave him my room number so he knew who I was, and he said Rodolfo didn't leave anything for me, so I asked for his apology, he said for what and walked away. Another guest was behind me and he went to serve her instead, ignoring me again. I have never had such shocking service!

Nice hotel in the city center

The hotel has a perfect location for me. Its a 20 mins walk from the FLIX bus station. Its situated close to the center of Ghent. In front of the hotel are St Nicholas church, the Belfry of Ghent, St Bavos Cathedral. It is also close to a lot of restaurants and the canals. Eventhough the hotel is in the centrum area, its pretty quiet at night. The hotel staff are very welcoming. They allowed us to store our belongings before we checked in (came early than usual).

The room we got is in the 4th floor (top floor), 1 queen bed and a sofa. Room is very spacious, rhey have a separate toilet and bath, which I find convenient. The only thing i can comment in the bathroom is that the bath tub is too deep. It would be hard for old guests to come in and out of the shower. They also provided coffee, tea, cola, beer and water in the room. Bed is very comfortable and the linens and pillow are of quality. Overall, my stay here is great. I wouldn't mind booking it again should I visit Ghent in my next travel.

Location is great, close to everything. Rooms are dated, novotel early 2000's style standard. they are ok, but really could do with an update. TBH it looks like the bathrooms have been done, but the main room could do with more.

The carpark.....BE brave..your car can fit...but its definitely squeeky bum getting in and out of there. A lot of back and forth driving to a tolerance of less than 2cm!

Usual very high Novotel standards of cleanliness, staff, furnishing and service. The location of the hotel is fantastic … right in the centre of Gent and a 2 min walk from the no.1 tram line direct to St Peter’s station. Also has a car park (not used). Staff were brilliant, really polite and helpful. WiFi free and consistent good quality. Bar has good selection. Room (executive) was really quiet,
Iots of space and storage, great coffee machine and even a view across the roof tops towards the castle. Would thoroughly recommend and would stay again in a heartbeat.

This hotel is in a great location for exploring the city. The staff were helpful and everything was clean. The rooms are quite dated and are in need of redecorating, and the mattress was very, very firm. The cleaner did try to enter our room despite having the 'do not disturb' sign on the door, and we found things to be quite noisy in the morning. I probably wouldn't return to this hotel.

Parts of the hotel, in particular our room, are badly in need of refurbishment.

The lock to our door had been vandalised, though it functioned. The door closer to our room had been removed and we returned one day to find the door open. The basin in our bathroom was blocked. These were reported to reception, we were assured they would be dealt with, but nothing was done.

Housekeeping was pretty dreadful. On arrival we had no shampoo, the next 4 days we had dirty cups, no tea bags, no spoons/stirrers etc every day. Very irritating.

Breakfast was adequate but the hotel offered no other dining. The bar was occasionally open but usually empty.

The worst in a long long time

This hotel should be removed from the hotels list. Where to begin? The pictures on hotels.com are, to say the least deceiving, reception area is sad, rundown, smells like smoke mixed with poor cleaning and humidity and gives the impression of an abandoned hotel. You are greeted by the receptionist who charges the city tax up front. she must know most of the guests will want to run away the minute they see the rooms. After charges the fees, she informs the room has only towel for 1 and handles you 3 plastic wrapped sets of towels and a bag with basic toiletries. I did and paid my reserv for 4; how hard can it be to place the towels in the room before the guests arrive? at the time they made the beds for example. she also lets you know that due to Covid there is no cleaning in the rooms during your stay..
I selected this hotel for its location and the fact that has a nice courtyard with a pool for my kids.. well… the pool is covered (and clearly not recently) the courtyard furniture is all rundown, the pillows stored in a shed with broken open doors, the exterior paint is pealing off. Once in the room.. well.. we have our towels .. the room is tiny, very very basic, but appears to be clean.. the bathroom is ok. Ahh.. what you want to take a shower after a day of travel? Well.. yes it is 9pm.. there is no hot water, when called the reception we where informed the water heater was turned off we need to wait. 2 hs later no hot water. Leaving tomorrow!!

Unfortunately, the air conditioning left a lot to be desired. We tried using both the A/C, and then later leaving the window wide open -- resulting in many mosquito bites. During the hot days of summer, not getting a good rest made for a poor day of vacation.

Hotel does the job, the location is the highlight.

Everything was good, and met our relatively non-picky standards. Location was excellent and far exceeded our expectations. Overall the staff felt a bit ambivalent. I would recommend this hotel based on the convenience of the location. Everything met expectations, but just felt average and staff never felt overly helpful, just looking to meet an average experience. However the location can not be beat, and yes the parking garage is just as tight to navigate as all the previous reviews mention-but we managed.
