I did not feel that the website portrayed the facility as it is. It is an old facility with old furniture and bed, e.g. keys to the room were from the 1920's. Bathroom facilities were modern and quite satisfactory.

Hotel is quaint, in a period building with high ceilings and creaky floorboard. Staff were helpful, parking in their garage convenient, and the neighbourhood was quiet. TV didnt work, nor the Bathroom light, but the receptionist fixed the latter and we didn't bother to mention the TV. Main negative was the very bad smell from the drains in the bathroom, and the lack of air con.

Interesting character property that could probably do with a bit of a refresh. The room was a good size, with a comfortable bed. A couple of minor flaws, wiring was visible on the ceiling light, and the window frames had seen better days. I will probably stay elsewhere next time I am in Ghent.

Great little hotel - shabby chic, good fresh breakfast - only slight downside was it can be a little noisy due to to old wooden floor boards but for me this adds even more character to this lovely building- would definitely stay again - around 10 mins walk to the centre of Ghent

I enjoyed my stay at the Charme Hotel Hancelot. Check-in was easy and the service was terrific. When they told me my room was on the top floor and there was no elevator, they offered to help carry my suitcase to my room. My room was clean and comfortable. My only suggestion would be for a new mattress as the one in my room was a bit too soft. Otherwise a wonderful stay and I would happily choose this hotel again!

This property does not have a lift. It would be good if Hotels.com asked properties without lifts to make possible guests aware of this fact. I travelled with a friend who has mobility limitation and this is not a good place to stay for people with difficulties going up or down stairs, particularly if the staircase is dark.

Absolutely stunning hotel! The room I stayed in was on the top floor and had solid wood floors and angled ceilings, even in the bathroom! Smelled so good like fresh, bright wood. Beautifully carved matching antique wood furniture as well- beureau, desk and bed frame. A really peaceful and clean feeling energy. The hotel lobby is full of gorgeous antiques and beautiful art everywhere, soft jazz and classical music being played and the staff were all extremely friendly and helpful. Really elegant and tasty breakfast. I loved my stay here!

Charming traditional hotel

A beautiful period property situated on the outskirts a few tram stops away from the centre.
Staff effecient but little more. Room was found clean but massively let down by the lack of housekeeping. Towels never changed or even picked up off the floor. Consumables like water and tea-bags not replenished. Plug missing from hand-basin. Requested one from reception but nithing happened. Breakfast was varied and adequate but ran out if late and not replenished. Will we go back again? Not sure!

Lovely hotel (just not good for a summer day)

The hotel is charming with its classic style. Even though it's an old building, it's well-preserved. Just the bathrooms, in my opinion, need some renovation. The bed was not very comfortable. It was a super warm day with no AC, just a small ventilator. There's no elevator, but ok. The breakfast was delicious with lots of options. The location is very good, close to the city center.

Real charm

This was a real”charm”. I could not believe I will stay in such a fairytale place with a lot of history and charm. Great hospitality and attention from staff, convenient location, safe surroundings and much more. The room is clean and nicely decorated with all amenities inside. Not a Fpur-Star Hotel

This could be a nice hotel with a little effort. It needs significant repairs, both cosmetic and functional. The staff, especially Nada, are quite helpful but the services available don’t warrant a 4-star rating and the description posted on hotels.com is misleading. My friends moved out of their room a night early due to the poor condition of their shower: mold, clogged plumbing etc. We had noise from the pipes all night and sewer gas smell most is the night. However, the breakfast was very good, it’s clean, and the furnishings were nice.

I stayed in a friend in the hotel. The room was huge and with beautiful classic design. The bathroom was also big with good shower. The breakfast was tasty and the workers were very very nice. It is 5 minutes wolkig from the city center. I'm very happy with the value for money

They were all super friendly, let me drop of my car early.
The hotel is different from all those modern formulaic stays and you had a sense of it being a home to a rich merchant. Close to the centre and breakfast was good. Finally, they posted me back an item I left in the room with no fuss. Nice people.

Great potential but .....

Hotel is in old mansion/house. Room needs decorating and a lot of tlc. Curtains did not pull together properly, not fixed to rail correctly, windows single glazed let in noise from street, bathroom very tatty part glazed shower with curtain as i assume glazing had broken in past, strong unpleasant drain smell. Bed very uncomfortable with soft mattress. Safe did not work, reported this and nothing done. Electricity went off several times. We stayed 3 nights and on two of the nights electricity off at 1.00 am when a bright light came on in the room. No hot water on last morning. Asked to pay when we arrived and eventually got a small refund due to disturbed sleep, had to wait each time for someone to come and put a cloth over the light. Breakfast was good. Staff also very nice. Could be a lovely hotel but not worth what we paid.

Really enjoyed our stay, the hotel is in a beautiful building with large windows and high ceilings.
There was a nice sophistication about the hotel interior that added to the experience.
Breakfast was excellent with plenty of variety, hot and cold.
Hotel is about a twenty minute walk from the city centre and thirty minutes from the train station.
Would certainly stay here again.

The pictures do not tell the true story. Truthfully things are a bit shabbier than illustrated. Our room was large which was great but the beds weren’t that comfortable and the pillows were horrible. Breakfast was good but on our second day it wasn’t even ready until after 9 o’clock with no explanation or apology. Location near the tram stop was a real plus

Delightful ‘period’ property which has retained its character reflecting its history as the house of a local businessman. It has wooden floors, brown furniture and is sparsely decorated but the rooms are spacious and very clean and comfortable. The breakfast is good quality and value for money and the staff are very friendly and attentive without being fussy. The property is about 10 mins walk from the historic centre but close to the tram/bus routes. I would stay here again without hesitation.

Slightly quirky - the hotel is converted merchant's house and so the layout is not the standard hotel fare. A 10 minute walk into Ghent town centre - so well placed for visiting the museums and restaurants etc. The hotel has some secure parking - but you need to contact them directly to book a space. Lovely old building, if you want modern then this not for you. Our room was lovely, clean and comfortable. The only complaint was that when we arrived there was no tea or coffee in room, which there should have been. On our way out we asked reception for some for when we got back, which there wasn’t!! We asked 3 times but to no avail. We ended up just taking from breakfast room. The hotel is about 15minute walk to town centre or tram is just outside hotel. The sauna was not working which we were disappointed with. All in all it was a great stay and would recommend hotel.

A decent place to stay if you are young and fit.

The Hotel is in a very old building where they haven't made any changes to the original and it shows in the condition of the building. It is located in a quiet residential neighborhood and is about a 15 minute walk to the old town at a decent pace. It is only two or three stops by Tram from te main touristy area so it is better to walk. The staff, especially Anthony and Nelle were very nice and helpful. without their help I would have had a very hard time getting up to my room on the third floor as there is no elevator( which they have disclosed in the property description). The breakfast buffet is adequate.

The hotel is beautiful, and the breakfast was nice and accommodating with soy milk/yogurt available as well. However was very disappointed to find out on our second day there that they don’t accept American Express and we were expected to pay with a different card... we booked through expedia with Amex AND completed the check in process at the hotel with my American Express and nobody said anything until the following day while we were having breakfast.

Otherwise a lovely stay, but that was very disappointing.

Utterly charmed me.

I liked this place. A lot. No, I loved it. Not everyone will, but if you like a restored mansion on the quieter edge of town, super comfortable and clean old furnishings with a great bed and a good bath, very personable and helpful and gracious staff, very good breakfast and a lovely and quiet adjacent terrace, all wrapped in an 1840's mansion, then you'll love this place.

Travelling back in Time.

The atmosphere brings you back into the 1920's. Sitting next to the open fire, you imagine how it might have been in the glorious and interesting time era. We knowdest that the hotel has no pictures and paintings against the walls... The hotel could use a little touch of finesse when it comes to deco. Little things have great affects. Overall we did had a great time over there.

Historical gem in Ghent

Many thanks to J & L for their super polite and informative guidance while we stayed in Hancelot. They were excellent hosts. Hotel is a quick tram ride to the historic centre (3 Euros) and being out of the centre at least gives you a chance at finding parking. Loved our time there.

We stayed here for two nights. Extremely warm welcome by Laurent and then really well assisted by James throughout our stay. Breakfast was good and had a nice variety. The hotel is conveniently situated very close to a tram and bus line. Old city is about 10min walk so it is nicely situated and not in such a crowded area. Room was nice and big and clean. Bathroom well equipped, room also had tea and coffee making facilities. The only thing was that they have such a beautiful building I felt they could perhaps do a little upgrade on the rooms decor, while still staying with the theme.

Looks nothing from the outside, but inside......décor and furniture take you back 100 years which was charming and with all modern facilities.
1 min from tram to centre - every 6 mins - 5mins to centre.
breakfast good
some extra dusting in main areas required, but rooms clean.

We rally enjoyed our stay and the service. The house was built in 1840 by a baron and it is protected by the city. The current manager wants to provide some of the experience of living in the Baron's house while also providing the comforts of today. We felt that they succeeded very well and that this rather unique approach worked well. However, it also gave some inconvenience, for example: there is no elevator installed and some the hotel itself at present (May 2016) is a work in progress.

We had a lovely stay at this hotel. The staff were very helpful and found us a car park space as we had forgotten to prebook the garage.
The hotel is charming, all the staff went out of their way to make our stay memorable. The hotel is situated in a quiet side street and only short walk into the town centre. We walked alongside the canal to the pretty centre.
The breakfast was excellent.
We will return and next time stay longer.

A Romantic Valentine's at Charme Hotel Hancelot

This hotel was a fabulous Belgic gem of a venue to celebrate a romantic break in Ghent.
This hotel was very good indeed and I would highly recommend due to its charm and presentation. The customer service was excellent and all presented with chic decor.

First visit to Ghent

The hotel was a little difficult to find on arrival - we used public transport - but soon learnt which trams or buses to use from a stop fifty yards from the hotel. The tram information provided on Tripadvisor was wrong. After that, everything became simple. The hotel is based in a grand bourgeois house of the early 20th century and has a distinct character marking it out from the more slickly packaged chains. The room we had was spacious and well-appointed - though the stripped bare-wood floors could be a little noisy and guests are asked not to wear outdoor shoes to avoid disturbing residents in the floor below. Breakfast was continental and generous in quantity. Staff were helpful and impressive in their command of English. I was prepared to speak French but they preferred to use English - a characteristic we found throughout Belgium even though both Flemish and French are the official languages.

Friends in Gent

I wanted a hotel for a quick overnight stay with no hassle and chose the Charme Hancelot as it is just off the main road in to Gent from the E40/E17, just where I wanted to be. The hotel is on a side street with ordinary looking houses, I almost missed it. However, behind the large wooden doors was a building of pure 1840's delight. The house had been maintained to a high standard keeping the original features, amazing chandeliers and period furniture in every room. Our room was on the third floor and there is no lift but the climb was well worth it as the room was large and beautifully presented. The beds were amazingly comfortable and there was a seating area as well. The en suite was well equipped and clean (don't panic about the frosted glass door you can't really see through it!). Breakfast was served in yet another elegant room, it was a cold buffet but a good variety and plenty of it. The staff were all very friendly and helpful. I would definitely stay at Charme Hancelot again and would recommend it unreservedly.

About 15 mins from the town not central as advertized, too far. The room had a very unpleasant smell which we found came from the wardrobe. We were put on the third floor up steep wooden steps and there were too many rules. After 10 pm no one present in the hotel, lack of security, very poor in this day and age. The area is rather run down and the streets uncleaned. We would not stay there again. The breakfast at eu 16.50 was very poor and did not represent value for money.

What happened with breakfast?

A beautifully renovated hotel in a quiet location, within reasonable walking distance of everything. Wewere upgraded to a luxury room, which was a lovely surprise and much appreciated. Our stay, however, was spoilt by misunderstanding around breakfast. We expected an inclusive rate, but agreed to pay. Be aware that it costs €16.50 pp, which we only discovered as we left. Definitely not worth it! Cold insipid coffee with day old pastries and a few slivers of ham and cheese. Otherwise, strongly recommended.

Very Nice Stay

Enjoyed our stay at this hotel very much. The staff are very friendly and helpful, giving tips about things to see in the area. It's a very short walk to the centre, less than ten minutes. The room was very nice and the breakfast very good.

Absolutely marvelous, close to the old town

Wonderful place to spend time. Lovely old town house from a by-gone era. Small and intimate hotel with gorgeous decor, rooms and reception very inviting and spacious. Service very attentive if you need it, otherwise you have the place to yourselves, almost!

Lovely hotel, very central

Very grand & impressive foyer & breakfast room. Slightly cheesy music, but we came to have a fondness for its familiarity.
Located centrally, just across the road from the park, next to a tram stop.
Friendly staff.
Comfortable bed.

Hotel indeed a 'Charme'

Had a fantastic weekend stay (3 nights) at this lovely boutique hotel. In a quiet side street outside the main centre of Ghent but only about 15 minutes walk to the historic centre past various shops/restaurants/cafes and there is also a bus/tram stop right at the end of the road so like us, once you've walked your socks off round the amazing city of Ghent you can take the lazy option to get back to hotel (Getting a 'linecard' for 10euros at a main tram/bus stop is the most economical).
Hotel interior is amazing and our room (2nd floor) was beautiful and very comfortable. Wondered if we'd miss not having a cooked breakfast but there was plenty of choice (inc. boiled eggs) to stoke you up for the day exploring. Staff always on hand to answer questions and to be greeted with a welcome drink as they explained the area was a nice touch - as were the sweetie jars in the hallway to dip into on your way back to your room after an exhausting day exploring this amazing city. Thoroughly recommend.

Beautiful Boutique Hotel with a touch of class!

18th century building with all the nice, authentic flavors and touches! Enjoyed my stay here, especially if your tired of the chain run of the mill hotels. Great service, hotel was clean, breakfeast was lovely no real complaints for a one night stay for business.

Beautiful Hotel

From the outside, it just looks like some large house down any road, but once in you will not be disappointed. Warm welcome on arrival and a short guide explaining they Ghent city layout. Our room was on the 2nd floor was spotless and very well presented. Complimentary sleepers with a polite notice, due wooden floors, noise levels may be a little higher so to respect others by using the slippers, was a great idea. We had no Tea/coffee facilities, which did not effect our stay, but we did contact the hotel on our return as it was clearly on our booking, we were informed that only the superior rooms had these facilities and an apology from the management was sent. I do feel that these are no longer luxury items and it would be nice if all rooms were provided with such a small gesture.

Beautiful, unique...

I loved this place, right from first walking into the grand entrance. High ceilings, a glowing fire, period furniture - all completely sympathetic to the style of the surroundings. I was immediately greeted by Madame, offered a glass of wine by the fire and upgraded to a suite. This is somebody smart about securing repeat business!

Very friendly reception

Not so useful for business travel, no proper table in very large room, but friendly lady found me one I could carry up to the room with her (no lift), my room was darkish and had a big weird structure in the corner next to the bed, like a rounded wall bulging out into my room which seems to serve as a corridor for the other room next door, very loud when people were walking and talking in this area. Not a very successful conversion of the lovely old space....No staff in hotel after 10 pm, they also lock away the drinks and nibbles bar in the reception area, so no access to food or drink. No minibar in the rooms either. On the upside, very friendly staff and good breakfast.

Pretty Boutique Hotel in Ghent

Stayed here for 3 nights in May 2012. The hotel is on a quiet little street about a 10 minute walk from the historic center of Ghent. There is also a major bus and tram stop just at the end of the block, so if you don't want to walk you can take the bus or tram. We mostly walked and sometimes took the tram home in the evening. The hotel itself is very beautiful, the building was built circa 1840 as the home of a count (I think I'm remembering that correctly). The staff are very helpful and courteous, they provided lots of good information about the area. The breakfast is very good with a variety of offerings to suit anyone's preferences. The only negative is that there is no elevator. Our room was on the top floor (the third floor) and was a climb of 70 steps up (I counted!). So it is more like walking to the 5th or 6th floor in a US building. We were able to handle this, but since I don't recall being forewarned about this, I kept wondering what we would have done if one of us was physically unable to get up those stairs? In general we found Belgium to not be very handicapped-friendly -- winding treacherous staircases seem to be everywhere -- so this is not that unusual for the region. The bottom line: it's a nice place to stay and we would definitely stay again, but if you have any issues with staircases, look elsewhere or ask for a room on a lower level. Hope this helps!

Excellent hotel!

The Charme Hotel Hancelot is a lovely hotel, tucked away in a quiet side street in Ghent, within walking distance of the city centre. We found it easy, cheap and safe to park on the street outside the hotel, although the hotel does have its own (relatively expensive) car park. The hotel is full of character, and our room was beautifully decorated. Breakfast was excellent and the staff were polite and helpful. There were several unexpected extras, including a welcoming drink on arrival, and the provision of slippers in the rooms. We stayed at the hotel for three nights and would definitely go back.
