Delightful stay at Hostel Macarena. We were greeted by the incredibly friendly and helpful Maria, who was so welcoming and informative. The room was spotless, the beds were very comfy, and everything felt clean and well looked after. I’d definitely come back next time I’m in Manchester.

Disappointing stay with multiple avoidable issues. The room was cold on arrival and there was no way to control the heating from inside the room, reception had to access a locked cupboard outside the room to switch it on, and the receptionist seemed frustrated when I asked for help. After eating out, the room became too hot, but I didn’t feel comfortable walking down to request help from the receptionist again, so I opened the window instead, however it was very noisy from bars and nightclubs below which also meant I slept very little, with no ear plugs or mitigation offered. The room also did not match what was advertised as there was no desk which I needed to do my work from and the shower lever was stiff and difficult to switch off. Breakfast was poorly managed, I waited around 15 minutes for a coffee, was served vegan eggs because I requested non-dairy milk, then waited a further 30 minutes for eggs that never arrived and then was told it would be better to leave rather than wait for the scrambled eggs. To make matters worse, I saw a mouse in the communal kitchen area and then noticed multiple mouse traps, suggesting an ongoing problem. The only reason I didn’t give it a 1 star was because the receptionist/assistant manager named Anna was seemed genuinely empathetic and extended checkout by an hour due to breakfast delays, offered support all which I appreciated, but unfortunately, the overall experience was unacceptable and I would not stay again.

Take your own padlock. There are cages to put your belongings in, but they don't come with locks.

The room I was allocated with my 10 year old son was right above a bar/nightclub with music blaring out until 3.00am. I asked to be moved but there were no other rooms available. If you want to pay for sleep deprivation and noise torture stay at the Malacuna. It was horrific and the worst stay I have ever had in a hotel.

Booked for 1 night in a female 4 person shared bunk room, reception Staff nice & chatty - booked in one hour after 3pm & both of bottom bunks were taken & two people sleeping with a pile of mess on floor , So asked for another room, not knowing it would be a mixed gender bunk room, So person below me was a man & he left toilet seat UP plus did not flush toilet after use !!! I did not Shower in our shared bathroom but i went back home to Shower !! Told reception on Check out that a male was put in Bed below me & i did not know till early morning hours . So if that bother's you, advise is do not Stay here. Shared Kitchen- fabulous & had Sofa's & a cooker & microwave, plus it is Clean. Cage for bag or fits a small suitcase, bring a small-padlock as none are available to buy at this hotel.

I stayed at Manchester's 'non hostel' for two nights. Before I arrived, I was intrigued by it's quirky nature. The receptionist at check in was lovely. Once presented with my key, I went in search of my room. Where were the door numbers? On the ceiling above the door, of course! I was cold in bed the first night (there was no seperate heating control in my room) and when the warm air heating kicked in in the morning, the room became unbearably hot. Another (lovely) receptionist said she would turn the heating down - it then became too cold. This process repeated itself. Obviously, the heating control (which covers the whole floor apparently) is far too sensitive. (Odd that the corridors and other communal areas were heated perfectly). I had similar issues with the shower, which, despite considering myself an intelligent man, I could not fathom. The shower ran hot or cold, with seemingly no options in-between. (One of the shower panels also detached itself whilst I was struggling with the controls).The room was basic, but fine - a quirky neon light behind the headboard added a certain je ne sais pas - though any hotel room lacking a TV is, I think, something of an oversight. The (well equipped) comunal kitchen was a very welcome bonus. I really, really wanted to enjoy my stay at this great place in a great location. I think I did; perhaps there were just too many 'teething' problems

Listen, I read lots of really bad comments about this place, but I needed a cheap, clean room in the centre of Manchester for one night. Did I get it ? yes. Was it cheap ? yes. Was it clean ? yes. Was it warm ? yes. Was it noisy ? no. Did it serve eggs benedict for breakfast ? No.
This place does what it says it does, it's no frilly and it's not plush, it's a decent cheap room in the middle of Manchester City Centre. So, if you want more than that, please go to your Hilton or Radisson or whatever and pay 3 or 4 times as much and stop giving this place such a bad time in terms of reviews.

In a funny way I quite liked this place and preferred it to the slick anonymoty of other budget hotels. However, it bore no ressemblance to the photos, I think the social space was being redone when I was there because there were lots of builders and scoffolding about.
I had to change rooms because the lights didn't work in the room I'd been given, but the room I was swapped to smelt really strongly of paint, which was quite unpleasant. It was huge and airy, with a huge red stripe across the celing and down the wall and purple neon light, so a bit like sleeping in a repurposed nightclub - which of course, might be what some people are after.
The next morning I walked downstairs and then realised that I had maroon gloss paint on my hands because the banisters had be painted. A wet paint sign would have been useful.
My top tips, make sure you have your own tea, coffee, milk etc because none of that is provided. Bring earplugs unless you are good at sleeping in noisy places.

We stayed in a double room. When we got to the room there were no soap in the bathroom, no toilet plunger and no trash bin… When I went to the reception she said there was nothing she could do and that we should used the floors bathroom instead until morning and she would write a note to get it fixed. Another guest gave me a soap when I was was about to leave to the room which helped for the night. Next morning and nothing had happened. I talked to the reception again and they wrote another note to get it fixed. NOTHING HAPPENED and we never got any of the stuff that was missing. I had to go and ask for toilet paper since it ran out and there was nothing but the one roll, reception said they would bring more but we only got one which also ran out. The paper was VERY THIN.

The morning of checkout we asked if we could stay 2 hours longer and was told it would be 15 pounds which we agreed to. But they had no way of paying apart from them writing down your credit card information and billing it to you which I was not comfortable with…. The girl in the reception was incredibly rude and ignored me multiple times talking to friends refusing to come up with a solution so we just decided to leave earlier. Terrible stay and I dont recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Manchester.

Over expectations

Went there for 3 nights with my girlfriend for the Oasis concert. We had low expectations since they offered a room for such a good price. However when we get the keycard for our room we got surprised. A big comfortable size bed, a clean bathroom and an AC, all we could ask for really. For this price and such a good location in the city, you can not ask for more! Really helpful staff with 24/7 service! Highly recommending, and I will come back!

The hostel phoned me from a foreign number over WhatsApp to cancel the booking just three days before the stay. Mindful of scams, I tried to find the property's contact details but they are not even listed on Google Maps. Nobody replied when I phoned using the number listed by Expedia. The hostel offered no compensation and made no attempt to help me find alternatives. It then took four attempts over the course of one week to organise a refund via Expedia. A really poor experience all round.

An unexpected good experience

First time booking a 'hostel'. Pleasantly surprised with accommodation. Great vibrant area of Manchester to be in, with loads of restaurants, pubs, cafes etc.
Expected more internal late night noise, but didn't happen. Only negative was loud music immediately underneath us until 230am on Friday & Saturday night of stay. Reception staff were friendly and attentive.
All in all - and unexpected good experience!

Staff were lovely, property was clean, room was nice, area was central and very convenient. The only problem was that there was a party in the downstairs area directly under our room. It sounded as if the party was actually IN our room and it continued until after 3pm. I was offered ear plugs which were freely available in a basket on the front desk so it must be a common problem. Had an awful night's sleep. If you can cope with noise you will be fine here or otherwise think carefully.

Everyone was really lovely, the location was perfect; it was close to the train station and close to Piccadilly Gardens. Really kind and lovely receptionists . Nothing to say there and The property itself is quite trendy and there's renovations going on, which wasn't too disruptive. Unfortunately, the amount of bathrooms in the the property are inadequate as there were only 2 available, one of the bathrooms had a detached toilet. The cleanliness of these bathrooms was lacking or simply too many guests make a mess. My food was munched by someone else even when labelled correctly and some of the guest were loud and obnoxious late in the night.

Apart from being relatively clean, this was a terrible stay. We stayed on the 2nd floor and it was so warm it felt borderline dangerous and you couldn’t open the windows as until 4am people were partying on the street / music was blaring. You’d think they would offer A/C or atleast a fan to compromise. It was a mild weekend in March, I dread to think what the height of the summer would be like.

Just be prepared for noise - the doors are heavy so do slam and we had someone have a disagreement in our hallway which you could clearly hear, the hostel does provide ear plugs which helped for this occasion! Friendly and helpful staff members working during day and evening shifts. Good location close to shopping and multiple restaurants very close. I had a private room that wasn’t in my type of usual standard , although it was clean.
BEWARE, sketchy cleaning staff that knocked heavily on the door and CAME IN TO MY ROOM EARLY IN THE MORNING WITHOUT MY CONSENT! I didn’t request any cleaning and was only staying for two nights. As a solo female traveler, this made me feel unsafe and uncomfortable. This ruined my whole day and experience at the place.
Expensive breakfast that only serves cereal and charging for towels was a bit ridiculous to me as not even a small towel to dry hands were available in the bathroom. I won’t stay there again

I’ve stayed at PH before and it’s a great hostel with competitive prices compared to other nearby hotels. I wouldn’t recommend staying on a weekend - it was incredibly noisy until 3am outside. The room was also absolutely boiling even though we turned down the radiator.

The location of the property is fantastic, central to the Northern Quarter. However until early hours in the morning you could hear the music and the customers in the bars across the road and downstairs really clearly through the single paned windows, we also were woken up around 8am with bottle bins being emptied rather loudly. You could also hear everything that went on in neighbouring rooms and corridors.
We struggled to get any hot water in the shower and the Overall cleanliness could have been a bit better in the bathroom, clean the showerheads and fix toilet seat fittings. The staff were spot on, very friendly and happy to help.

I don't recommend anyone who is a light sleeper to stay here though. Weekends are loud with music from local bars, and even Monday and Tuesday nights there were drunk bar goers being loud in the street until about 2am. It's totally safe though, and other than that, a perfect location and very comfortable.

Very good price for what we got, staff were really friendly. Only thing that was a let down was cleanliness of the bed sheet which didn't seem like it was cleaned properly. It was noisy outside but I expected that to be honest with it being central in NQ

Great surprise in the NQ. Very spacious and clean. Could do with some soundproofing within the building, but no real issues. Would stay again!
