I stayed at Bucholz Downtown Hotel during my recent visit to Cologne for the Christmas Markets. The hotel is very conveniently located near the HBF and near the walking path along the river. The hotel breakfast was very nice...not extensive but a nice way to start you day and served by a friendly staff. The hotel is older and a bit dated but clean with good mechanicals. I am a solo female traveler...the street was a bit dark for me at night when walking alone. Also, the hotel desk is not staffed overnight. I would recommend this hotel but I do not think it is appropriate for older, solo female travelers. Enjoy and safe travels!

Great location for Christmas market visit

Very convenient location, one block from the river, a 10-13 minute walk to the train station, the cathedral and art museum. There were 4-5 Christmas markets within walking distance of the hotel.

The breakfast was served in a beautifully decorated breakfast room. It was a typical German breakfast, a substantial continental breakfast.

The bathroom was very clean and had a large and excellent shower with plenty of hard water. The bed was comfortable although might be hard for some.

There is free wifi but it wasn’t always a good signal. It is a small hotel and, although there is an elevator, most of the rooms require going up or down about 10 steps. Room 20 and 16 (I believe) are on the same floor as the elevator.

This is a family owed hotel and for that reason my parents and me enjoyed our stay so much. Friendly staff, great breakfast and even a doggie that you can pet if you want. The owner is an older lady and she was the one that took care of us during breakfast. She was amazing.

Clean, super comfortable hotel with a small lift.

The hotel owner's mom (a Welsh) is very nice and generous offering us complimentary coffee upon arrival while waiting for our room.

Hotel is conveniently located at city's main attractions, especially the Cologne Cathedral. All within walking distance. Room is very spacious and breakfast superb. Highly recommended. If i come again, I will choose this same hotel.

Good location few mins walk from station - family room, as expected, bathroom tiny, shower very small and would be a struggle for anyone large, sink in room as bathroom too small, lots of hot water. Quiet hotel but no sound proofing and dark curtains would be better than white as room bright as soon as sun up. But, very clean and a good base for a visit.

If you choose to stay at this hotel you’re getting the bare minimum. The location wasn’t too far from the old town which was the only perk. It was clean but there was no AC and the concierge was no help with information regarding the city. The continental breakfast was very subpar.

We booked this hotel for a trip to the Christmas markets. It's nice and centrally located, but in a quiet area. Short walk to the train station and Dom. Our room was lovely, spacious and clean. Breakfast was plentiful, staff were friendly and spoke excellent English. We'd happily stay here again should we ever return to Cologne.

The hotel is in a very central location but I arrived in the dark so got a taxi even though it was a short walk. As I was arriving late they put my key in a safe outside and gave me the code but I needed glasses to do this as the pad is small and my eyesight is not so good. Brilliant breakfasts with so much choice and a very attendant waitress. My room was at the front of the hotel next to the neon sign. The curtains were light so I was kept awake by the light then woken up by construction work. That is not the hotels fault. The room was very comfortable with an en suite. Great wifi. I would not hesitate to recommend this hotel.

Really close to the Cathedral. They have an elevator!! Amazing breakfast. Only issue was no air-con if that is a priority for your booking... but they had a fan. Room was on the smaller side. Different wifi for each floor level was helpful

Nice place, people were friendly and helpful. Room was very clean. I still do not understand the European \"double bed\" is where they shove two singles together and cover it all with one sheet, but the bed(s) were comfortable. Breakfast was good. This was close to everything. I recommend this hotel to someone looking for a nice place.

Everything you could ask for..

Lovely welcome at the hotel with a free Gleuwein on arrival. Staff very knowledgeable about Cologne, the surrounding areas and what's happening during our stay.

The room was lovely, main bedroom, lounge and bathroom. The room (as well as the rest of the hotel ) was very clean and well furnished. The only downside was that their wasn't a kettle in our room, but this was made up by the always full bowl of biscuits and fruit at the entrance and the buffet style continental breakfast which you could really fill your boots in.

The hotel is tucked just off a main road and the banks of the Rhine, is 10 minutes walk from the train station, the centre of Cologne and a large sway of the Xmas Markets.

If you like to exercise their is also a nice 5km run or walk along the banks of the Rhine, that offers some lovely views of the Cathedral and the Old Town.

The hotel is located on a quiet street with an easy 5 minute walk to the main train station and cathedral, making it an ideal location for getting to and from, but not being noisy.

The room was a good size, clean and with suitable facilities and the bed was comfortable. The bathroom has a shower and no bath, with the sink in the main room rather than in the bathroom.

The room was pleasant and comfortable, although not the most luxorious, but it represented good value for money and I would definitely stay there again.

We visited in order to go to the Christmas markets, and it was an excellent location for that.

Lovely stay at Buchholz Downtown Hotel.

We are a family of three adults and we really enjoyed our stay at the Buchholz Downtown Hotel. Staff were very helpful. Breakfast was great and the breakfast ladies were really helpful and sweet. Room for three was spacious and very clean. All attractions eg. Dome and art museums and theatre are within a short walking distance as is the main train station. The fabulous Christmas markets were also all within a short walking distance. I highly recommend this hotel and would surly stay there again if I re visit Cologne.

I only stayed at this hotel for one night, but I would definitely stay there again. Everybody who worked at the hotel and I spoke to was really friendly and helpful. The hotel was really close to the river, station and cathedral, yet really quiet. For a light sleeper this was a definite bonus. It was also a safe area for a single woman to walk around.

We had a great stay at the Buchholz Hotel! Not only was the hotel clean and well-kept, the staff went above and beyond in accommodating our needs (printing boarding passes/directions/calling cab service). The owners (Sascha and Carol) were quite pleasant and personable. The breakfast was, by far, fabulous! The food was fresh and plentiful. We felt very safe and secure at the Buchholz Hotel and would recommend this hotel to anyone traveling to Cologne!!

One night stopover. Easy to find the hotel, 5 minutes walk from rail station. Be aware if you arrive late, reception closes at 9PM but I was contacted in advance to be told that keys would be left in a secure location and the code to access them.
Room was fine, bigger than the single I had booked. Bathroom very small but everything was in good condition and worked well.
Breakfast fine an varied.

I cannot fault the Buchholz Downtown Hotel, staff were really friendly and extremely helpful. The hotel room had a lovely Boutique feel, loads of room and the bed was really comfortable.

The breakfast was amazing, loads of choice for a continental breakfast ans really good quality produce! again, dining room staff really friendly and attentive!

brilliant for heading into town, 5 min walk from the city centre and the Cathedral and central station and a road away from the river.

This hotel ticked all the right boxes for me. It's a 10 min walk to the main train station and the amazing Cathedral (Gothic at it's finest). 2 min walk to the river. Very quiet location. Always felt safe at night. Staff friendly and happy to offer advice on sights to see/things to do. Breakfast was excellent, room always perfectly clean. Bathroom small, but ok, and very clean. Wi-fi fast and stable. 15 min walk to good pubs and restaurants. Definitely recommend and would return if in Cologne again.

Very nice, small, private hotel in good location

I've stayed in other hotels in Cologne that were close to trains. This one is very close to the main station but is in a quiet neighborhood that is near the river (great for my morning runs). Private owner, very nice rooms, very nice morning breakfast (included), very nice staff, free wi-fi. Unless I had a reason to work on the other side of Cologne-- I would definitely stay here again.

We had a little trouble finding the hotel but once we did, it was in an okay location. There were not restaurants real near but it was fairly close to the main square with the Cathedral. The breakfast was disappointing and not what we have been used to in Germany. The bathroom was super tiny even by European standards. Nothing terrible about the hotel, just nothing that would make me want to return to it.

The hotel has a warm, welcoming facade on an otherwise dark street, which is one street back from the river.
The room was comfy and warm, the only downside was that there was a big step almost as soon as you stepped into the room. Oddly it looked like an rsj that had been carpeted (the rest of the room was wooden floor) we soon got used to stepping over it though..
The bathroom was lovely and clean, and the towels and bed linen were good quality.
Breakfast was delicious, loads to choose from, not hot buffet, but lots of different meats, cheeses, even smoked salmon, as well as fruit, cakes, bread, cereals, plentiful fruit juices and lovely tea and coffee.
Staff were very helpful and friendly and I would not hesitate to recommend this hotel to anyone. I would also choose when we return to Cologne.

Highly recommend the Buchholz...

The Buchholz is a great choice to stay if you wish to be close to major attractions in Cologne and the train station. The hotel is a 5-minute walk from the station. The staff are very friendly, attentive, and speak English/German. The included breakfast has a variety of foods from cereal/fruit/yogurt to German meats and more. Wi-Fi works well on the main floor and not so much on the top floors. The rooms are small compared to US hotel rooms but they're very functional and designed for sleeping/showering vs. spending a lot of time in the room. The rooms don't have AC from what I can tell and the heat is radiator. Again makes sense as this is an old building. The elevator again is small by US standards but functional for 1 person/luggage or just 2 people. But it all works nicely. I would highly recommend the Buchholz to anyone - you won't be disappointed.

Had a good 2-night stay at this hotel. In a quiet part of the city, about a 10-minute walk from the train station and the Cologne Cathedral. Nice room (quiet); very friendly and helpful staff; excellent breakfast. Had an issue with a loose shower fixture, but it was fixed right away after pointing it out to the front desk. Highly recommended.

Convenient hotel with a comfy character

The hotel is in a quiet street within an easy walk to the main station, Dom and corner restaurants. It is also close to the river. The building is 150 years old and thi effects the shape of the rooms etc however the corridors are short and the breakfast room full of character. It's being in a large home rather than a generic 5 star hotel. Room 16 has a little lounge/ work desk and a long narrow bathroom. In general I would prefer it to a chain hotel.

A boutique hotel family run. Due to layout, as in all such older small building hotels, the elevator is small and does not stop at every floor because some are half stops. But it is absolutely no problem. Showers were hot and water pressure good. In room telephone did not work. The management attempted a solution for a business conference call.

A real find in Cologne!

This was my fifth trip to Cologne for the biannual Photokina trade show. I've stayed at a different hotel each time, because I never found one I'd care to go back to. The search is over now, the Hotel Buchholz will be my permanent base of operations anytime I'm in Cologne. The owners and staff are very pleasant, really seem to care that their guests have a good stay. The free breakfast every morning is excellent, with eggs to order, an array of cold cuts, choice of several breads to toast, a half-dozen juices, cereals and fruit. An excellent start to the day and no running around to find a restaurant to provide it. The hauptbahnhof (main train station) is just a 5 minute or less walk away, and the shops and restaurants just a few minutes on the other side. The WiFi/internet is fine most times, although it did slow badly when all the press staying at the hotel got back after their evening dinner meetings and started uploading things. That was the one drawback, but I managed to work through it, and otherwise, I couldn't have been happier. I'll definitely be back!

This hotel was very well located, about an easy10 mins walk to the Dom Catherdral , shopping and restuarants. The room was very comfortable. Breakfast was fabulous & lots of it. The staff were very attentive and made us feel right at home. This would be the perfect place to stay if you travelled to Cologne for business regularly.

A very convenient hotel in centre of Cologne and close to the main train station (Haupt Bahnhof) but being in a quiet back street meant a peaceful night's sleep. Friendly staff with Anglo-German background so language no issue. Very comfortable, spacious room with good facilities - we had separate bedroom and sitting area (not specially requested). Very good choice at the buffet brekfast. No hesitation to recommend.

The Buchholz was conveniently located. Quiet street. Not a fancy hotel, but it was clean and I was comfortable there. Staff was really helpful. Left too early to eat breakfast, so one of the employees made me sandwiches just before bedtime to take with me on my train ride. I thought this service was beyond anything that I had experienced at a hotel before. Thank you Hotel Buchholz for a nice stay. PS: There are stairs to get into the hotel. This did not bother me but it is not handicap accessible.

I spent one night in December at the Hotel Buchholz. Great location. Safe neighborhood. It was very walkable from the train station which is important to me as I have a bad knee. The hotel does have a lift, but it is not what you would call handicapped accessible. It has typical European narrow halls.The room was small, but clean. What I would expect froma 3 star hotel. The manager spoke good English and was helpful in directing me to the Christmas Markets. He held my bag at the reception for me on the day I checked out while I explored more of Cologne. When I returned, he offered me a cup of coffee gratis. The breakfast was feast of frits, breads, meats, and cheeses. I would definitely stay there again.

Hotel Buchholz is in a fantastic location

This was the best hotel in the three I stayed in Germany.
It was so close to the Railway station but in a quiet street ...made it an ideal loacation.
My room was comfortable and a pleasure to spend time in... beautifully decorated and a fabulous bathroom.
The room was really clean, the breakfast was wonderful, helpful friendly staff .... all in all a great hotel and it deserves more stars.
I will definitely stay here again.

朝食が充実していて満足できました。交通の都合でチェックインが遅くなってしまいましたが、キーボックスの案内メールが届き、無事に入室できました。
エレベーターが故障中で部屋まで階段で上がる必要がありましたが、部屋や施設内は総じて清潔で手入れも行き届いていました。

ホテルに入る鍵と部屋に入る鍵をもらいましたが、コツをつかむまではなかなか難しかったです。

Hotel ist in die Jahre gekommen und Rezeption war kaum besetzt. Sonst hat alles geklappt und gute Lage. Für kurz Aufenthalt gut geignet.

Das kleine Hotel hat von einem Boutique Hotel leider nix. Die Zimmer sind Klein. TV sehr klein und die Einrichtung ist sehr in die Jahre gekommen. Einige Dinge funktionieren nicht mehr richtig. Das Personal ist sehr freundlich und das Frühstück ausreichend und die Wünsche werden erfüllt. Der Weg zum Musical Dome ist kurz auch die Altstadt fussläufig zu erreichen. Zum Rhein sind es auch nur wenige Meter. Also das kleine Hotel liegt gut. Der kleine Aufzug lässt kein Raum zur Angst.

Chambre assez spacieuse, petite salle de bain, petite douche juste en face des toilettes. Lavabo dans la chambre. Parking payant à 5 m à pied de l’hôtel. Pour le petit déjeuner il n’y avait pas de grand choix.

Hvem ringer klokkerne for?

Dejlig central beliggenhed i en stille gade, men klokkeren i den nærliggende kirke stod tidligt op :-)
Værelset var rummeligt og bad/toilet i god stand.
