This is a hotel in the heart of Salem, so it is convenient to the shops without having to drive, or ride. It is also a hotel with lots of history, and is on the Historical Hotels list. If you want modern, and spacious, this is not the place for you. The Hawthorne is a hotel that transports you back in time. It demands a quiet respect for the fascinating look back at the craftsmanship of days gone by. The staff is very accommodating, and the rooms are clean. Is there some paint chips on the fixtures? Yes. Is the elevator small? Yes. But, there is a postal drop box on each floor, and the elevator still has a wooden ceiling. It is history incarnate, in a city you come to for history. It will set the ambiance for your whole trip.

Having arrived an hour early, I checked in with the staff at the front desk and was so grateful they allowed me to park the car there although I was early. Everything about this hotel is as I had hoped. I’ve traveled to Salem for many years usually annually. The Hawthorne Hotel had caught my eye many years ago, and I finally remembered to book a room there. I’m with my two young teenage granddaughters and we all thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The beds and linens and room were very comfortable. The bathroom is small but very usable. There isn’t a closet, but we were only there for a day so that wasn’t a problem. Every staff member was so helpful in congenial. I will stay there again!

Good to have parking. A good perk is free parking. The basement level has a beautiful library and conference room that looks like the hull of a ship. The restaurant in the hotel is good but pricey. The Nathaniel Hawthorne clam chowder is a small bowl and expensive....Walking distance to many things. Rooms are small and the bed fills up most of the room. No view to speak off. But it is a heritage hotel and the connection to Hawthorne was why I stayed. The staff were pleasant and helpful.

We had a lovely wedding now the garden was set up beautifully just as the bride was about to come out. It did start to rain.
The staff transformed the hall so quickly everybody was inside in a gorgeous setting so quickly and promptly. It was amazing. The wedding went off without a hitch. Everybody’s very friendly and accommodating. The hall is gorgeous. The room so beautiful I would recommend it.

Great stay overall. The hotel is centrally located and convenient for exploring Salem. While I appreciated the historic character and charm, I didn't sleep particularly well because I found the beds quite firm. The property is a great choice for those interested in the history of the building, but if I return to Salem, I would likely choose a more updated hotel. For example, the bathroom layout was unusual—the shower was in a separate room on the opposite side of the guest room from the toilet and sink, which felt a bit inconvenient.

This hotel was a great gem in the middle of downtown Salem. We enjoyed being able to walk to almost every point of interest. The room was spacious and chic. The shower was a bit small and parking was horrendous. The hotel host a lot of events so that contributed to the abundance of people in the area but we eventually got a spot toward the evening. Overall, we really enjoyed our stay here.

The only complaint we have was the shower it was very small and had no water pressure. We knew it was and old place and did not expect modern amenities but when you can't rinse shampoo out of you hair its a problem.

Property was great, excellent location, nice staff. My problem was that there was a construction on the street right in front of my windows of the third floor. At night rattling plates when cars were driving by , since the morning construction noises. So honestly, the hotel is big…. Why you put guests the closest possible to the noise? Second, I wish that there was a fridge in the room. Overall I would be back but be aware of the room location.

Loved the old charm of this hotel. The staff is helpful. Some of the items in the hotel could be updated while still keeping the old charm. For example, the door handle on the bathroom was old and ready to fall off and the fixtures and window was very old. Overall, it was a good stay and I'd stay again.

An historic larger hotel in the center of town, this property made our tourist visit to Cape Ann easy. Free parking in hotel lot was a nice bonus. Our guest rooms was clean but needs fresh paint throughout. Broken window shades in guest rooms made keeping room dark difficult. Busy banquet room, a quaint pub, and a breakfast room provided a variety of
Food and drink options. Pillows were too soft and lumpy for us. Tiny bathroom.

First time going to Salem as an adult. Was greeted by friendly staff who assured us we would not be haunted. Lol! Beautiful hotel with great history. We enjoyed a cocktail while listening to a piano duo. Will definitely be back there again.

This hotel has been around for decades, and it matches the Salem surrounding properties. Staff were friendly, but room was like stepping back in time. No mini fridge, and ice was hard to find. Space is a bit tight in the bath area. One night stay was fine.

This is an old hotel with plenty of charm and grandeur. Beds are comfortable with crips white sheets. Staff were helpful and rooms were acceptably clean. I say that because the shower tray still contained someone elses hair and a bag of sweets had been left, unnoticed, on the windowsill. Ample, easy parking right on site. Hotel location is central with plenty of restaurants within easy walking distance. We ate lunch in The Tavern - a bar within the hotel - which was lovely. Although there were no coffee/tea making facilities on our room, there were complimentary drinks in the wonderful lobby area.

The only thing I found a little strange about our room (617) was the layout of our bathroom - the toilet protruded right across the doorway meaning you had to contort yourself to both get in the bathroom and to sit on the toilet. Maybe other rooms are not like this. I have acknowledged that this is an old building so maybe any renovations have to observe certain restrictions?

Whenever im in Salem, this is my first choice. The rooms are always clean, comfortable and charming. The food options are incredible and worth the money spent.
I have never come across a staff member anywhere in the hotel that isnt polite and or helpful or courteous.
Well worth the money and experience.

The hotel has much cha and character. Our room however was very small. It was the last one available and we realised why. Room 301 should really be a single. With a single bed there might be enough room to accommodate a wardrobe or a chest of drawers. It was classed as an economy room but at over $200 a night we expected better.

Due to street work, water unexpectedly wasn’t available on the top floors. The staff handled it very well, keeping guests informed and offering a full refund to guests choosing not to stay. As we had not travelled far, we decided to head home. We would not hesitate to book again. Fantastic location, unflappable staff. Kudos.

The hotel was nice looking and had good historical value. It’s in a good location. The cleanliness of the room was average to above average. The beds were not good. Solid hard foam mattress. Very uncomfortable. The staff was there to do a job but really did not succeed. Not too friendly. Seemed to be a younger / inexperienced staff. Upon check in really no information was given. Had to ask for the complimentary bottles of water. Breakfast was ok and was served between 7am and 9am and not complementary. The thermostat in the room wasn’t operating. The hotel regulated the temperature. Pretty warm. Front desk suggested to just open the window. I would rate our overall experience a 3.

Everything about the Hawthorne is the epitome of old world class. There is simply not a single thing or person we could find fault with. The room was large, comfortable and had a quiet undertone of luxury without any need for extras. The food was, exceptional. The staff were without a doubt the most pleasant, warm, competent and overtly helpful I've ever had the pleasure of dealing with. I used to be a F&B manager at a casino and found myself in absolute envy of the staff. I wish there were more hotels left with the warmth and comfort of the Hawthorne.

This hotel was amazing and beautiful and very clean..the staff were so kind and accommodating, anything you need they are on it immediately ..the downfall is they turn the heat off at night in the rooms something having to do with the weather I dont understand thier explanation but I stayed may 7th thru may 11th still cold and I have to say the town of Salem was amazing and one of the hostess ladies that work at the tavern the bar in the hotel was very snappy to me when I asked her a question but I didnt let that bother me because there is more kind than mean...she was working the evening of Saturday night 9th ..she needs an additude adjustment by management...but I 100% give this 4 stars ...you will love it!!!

Location was fabulous. Was disappointed in horrible water pressure and lack of actual hot water apart from one day of our stay. It was lukewarm one day and when I mentioned it it was upgraded to warm the next day. But lack of water pressure made showing less than clean feeling.

The room was spotless and the staff was incredibly friendly. I especially appreciated the complimentary coffee in the lobby early in the morning. Note that breakfast is not included with the stay and requires an extra fee, likely because the bar area is open to the public.Regarding the breakfast: I loved the variety of egg dishes offered, but the bread quality could be improved and real butter should be provided. The coffee also needs an upgrade to a better roast. Finally, swapping the plastic coffee pitchers for stainless steel ones would definitely elevate the presentation and experience, and it is healthier.

Cleaning staff emptied trash once, didnt vacuum and left our door open from 3pm until we found it about 630pm that evening. The desk staff didn't seem to care when I reported it. The photos of the rooms are not very revealing of the actual room. I reserved the Bertram with a Queen bed and when we walked in there was just enough room to walk as long as you didn't try to pass the other person in the room. VERY costly for what you actually receive.

AC doesn’t work in the room. The room was set at 86 degrees and we were unable to change it. Almost died in there. That would have been the next haunted room.
