In need of an upgrade. It might have been ok once but is now looking very shaby. Room safe was broken, wet patch on carpet due to leaking ac, rotten bathroom door frame, street noise and shower took an age to run hot. Staff were friendly and did their best.

Booked into 2 rooms on 10th floor which both were warm due to hot spell. But reception not proactive to offer lower rooms until I requested. Because of my complaints and changed rooms 3 times I believe a certain staff took personal action to reconfigure my key every day. Thus, I had reset my key. Hope management will look into my case.

Old hotel conveniently located

It is a dated hotel that has seen better days. Having said that, the service staff is attentive and helpful. Location is good. Carpark is opened in the back.
The rooms are old but OK. Beds too soft like the pillows.
We heard noise from the karaoke next-door til after 11pm. Then there is the noise from I think the external aircon condenser that's making a lot of humming noise every few minutes for about 15 secs each time. There's no noise from the road. Also didn't hear the prayers from the nearby mosque.

Every staff just looked at each other and their manager expecting the manager to attend to all guests while they are chatting. By every staff it means 5 or 6 of them in the front desk just not helping with the check in. The entire check in process took 1 hour. Room is reasonably clean and location is good though. The manager tried to be as helpful and polite as possible though. I think the hotel is overstaffwd for no obvious economic reason. Perhaps the cost reduction can be shared with guests if the hotel will.

Disappointing Check-in

To be told that one can only check-in at 3pm is simply going overboard. I was alone at 1.30pm for my check-in & was told check-in is 3pm & there are no rooms ready, surely there is One room for me?? After-all, check-out time is 12noon, so there is enough time to clean some rooms to cater for the early birds.

Front office staff not very enthusiastic.

Both reception and check out staff are great, esp Cherry who let me extend check out by abt 40 min. Room ok, bed comfortable. All basic toiletries available. Close proximity to chowrasta, food shops and CAT stop. Breakfast not fantastic but sufficient.

This is a Gem

I just love it's location and view from the room offered during check-in. The charm of Georgetown is very much alive within the entire vicinity and local great food are just minutes of walking from hotel. The hotel staffs are always available to provide truly warm assistance during my stay. I will definitely come back to this hotel and would be very soon.

Good hotel value for money!

Hotel was at a convenient location - close proximity to street food and walking distance to train station. Size of room was quite big, appreciated the free in-room mini bar, tissue box and bathroom accessories. Our room was on Level 10 - we have an amazing view of Penang, but wifi is quite weak. Apart from the occasional insect, we absolutely enjoyed the room for it's value :)

Overall it was ok. Rooms were slightly old and full of mini cockroaches, many cockroaches were seen coming out from the old cabinets. Food was not bad but limited choices. Parking was limited too. But price wise was cheap and location was quite strategic with many eateries around it.

- Pathetic varieties of breakfast with stone hard white bread
- Facing Penang Road, enjoy the ongoing traffic noises and yes, clear hearing of people laughing or shouting on streets
- Daily visitors of roaches and flies
- Door handle cannot be pressed down for more than 5 secs, else alarm will rang
- Saw the ugly side of housekeeping

I loved the friendliness of receptionists but others failed miserably. I know towels, face towels and perhaps floor mats are wash together but don't do it in front of me and don't stack all together. The housekeeper stacked all towels and floor mat together and hello, I'm not OCD but one of the towel is for my baby's use. Carpet is extremely dirty, seems like didn't vacuum for a very long time and beware of roaches! Breakfast is rather bad that I only had it on the 1st morning out of 4.

Short and sweet, choose other hotel instead though location is great, with the bus stop just a 30 seconds away.

PS: I dropped a plush at the lobby's sofa and no one attempt to inform or call me (holding a local line). Discover it missing only when I reach airport. Hmm.. Would appreciate if someone can notify me since I'm travelling alone with baby, not very easy to handle a baby with a luggage, diaper bag and a sling bag. Felt more sad for my bub though as its her favourite soft toy.

Room was good and bed very comfortable. Sheets and towels changed every day. Staff were very polite and helpful. Hotel is in a great location for sightseeing with some good nearby restautants.
A minor complaint was that breakfast food was not always kept hot as the burners under the hot plate were not checked to see if still lit. We did complain about this so i hope they improve on this.
All in all it was a good hotel and great value.

The room was better than I thought. As we were staying at the 9th floor, we can have a good view of the Penang streets. Bed was big and comfortable. The water was a bit too hot and takes some time to cool down.

Location was good and easy to find. It is right next to Cititel hotel which is tall, hence when we got lost in Georgetown, we would just search for the tall Cititel Hotel building and head towards it.

We saw a cockroach in the room and spent some time to catch it. There are ants in the room as well. The hotel should probably hire pest control with regard to this issue.

The rooftop was quite nice, with sofa and tables to chill at. The night view was quite nice too.

The gym was a bit small and we can't find the remote control for the aircond in the gym.

Overall is good.

1. Fast check in and check out with pleasant staff, Edward to name one of them.

2. Comfy bed and fairly large room.

3. Breakfast was good but a few improvement would be even better in future. .

4. Complimentary Wi-Fi connection was quite fast.

5. The Hotel is in between Free Bus (Rapid Penang CAT) route. Bus Stop & Taxi is a few steps away.

6. Tourist attraction in walking distance.

7. Food stalls and Restaurant nearby.

Not so positive...
1. Our room was at the 7th floor but sounds from surrounding area still can be overheard, such as vehicle honking & people chattering. Needs more soundproof windows, maybe?

2. Breakfast starts at 0730hrs, which is consider very late.

3. No curtains in the shower which made the whole bathroom splashing after you're done.

4. Lots of Ants found at minibar area.

Professionally-run hotel in convenient location

I stayed for 2 nights (9&10/AUG 2016). I was met with friendly, capable staff members who were efficient, and I was given a room that was clean, furnished to a tasteful standard, and quiet. Everything in the room functioned according to expectations, and I was fortunate to have a good view and also a balcony. The internet speed was good unlike some other places I've stayed at. The free buffet breakfast covered all basic western expectations given the room rate. The hotel lived up to its description on Expedia and was not pumped up to be something that it isn't. It's excellent given the price range.

It's hard to find criticism really, but at a push I'd say that the seating capacity in the free buffet breakfast area is, in my opinion, a little insufficient. If the hotel had a high occupancy rate then you might well find yourself with coffee and toast in hand, searching for a spot to sit. This happened to me on one of my two mornings there, but I was only left standing for a short minute or two before one of their attentive staff members swiftly located a vacant space for me.

In summary, I would absolutely recommend this hotel to anyone, and it will be my first choice of hotel next time I visit Penang.

Great location, friendly hotel.

I had an unplanned 10 day stay here and enjoyed it thoroughly. Staff happy and always helpful. Breakfast was fine, I alternated Asian and Continental and didn't get bored. Location is great, walking distance to many places and free CAT bus almost at the door. One floor is available for women traveling alone. Great value for money, I'm happy to recommend the Merchant Hotel

An awesome place to stay in...

Its an awesome place to stay right in the heart of george town wherein you get to find most of the tourist attractions within the same locality.
Regarding the hotel, it was simply superb and the room was quite spacious and clean. I guess the hotel has been recently renovated and so everything was new and awesome. 24 hrs hot water was really good. The room service guys were quite good and did their job. The guys at the reception were really awesome in guiding us to the major tourist attraction spots. They always turned up immediately on whatever the request might be. The breakfast although not many options, but was pretty decent for a morning gulping in. At the end, everything in this hotel is a ++. I recommend this hotel to all of them visiting penang. :)
Thanks to the hotel management and the guys at the reception...house keeping....and at the kitchen :)

You will be billed RM150 for stains on carpet

Stayed here few times and also the last time.
Coffee cup spilled coffee onto the carpet but when checking out, was billed by the front office for RM150 for a stain that was 6 inches in diameter wide. They said that they need a carpet cleaner to clean the stain up. Think that the carpet cleaner will be their house keeper.

Stayed in this hotel for 1 night but had stayed here before. Rooms and room facilities normal with tea making items, old safe to keep your valuables, nice big plasma, comfy bed and an outside small balcony ( upgraded me ). Three F.O.C. bottles of mineral water, and 2 paper containers of \" fruit \" juices in small fridge as a hotel's give away to customers. But, no coke cans or anything liked that. Breakfast was so so only. No juice. No eggs except for hard boiled eggs. Bread, some jam poured into containers, some cakes, cut up sausages, pasta, boiled eggs, coffee, tea and milk.

A place to be

It is a perfect place to be. My sister and I were there for 2 days and we were taken care of very nicely. Fabulous friendly staff, beautiful room with a balcony and an amazing view. Bus stop is right there. Uber is fantastic. Its a place right out of old Julia Roberts movie...dreamy.

The staff were very friendly, and approachable. They'll greet you with a smile every time they see you. Room wise - clean and comfy, although the aircon positioned wrongly (I couldn't feel it from my bed). Nevertheless, I will definitely stay here again when I visit Penang again! :)

Overall everything was good. The only disappointment was the horrible breakfast. A pan off what was called baked eggs (everyday) was unidentifiable. Tried it the first day, and had to take a pass on the other four days. If you are a coffee and toast person, then it will be just fine. As bad as the breakfast was, I would still recommend the Hotel for Location and priced.

Very comfy hotel with a great location.

The hotel is located within walking distances to good food eateries. We had a room with a nice view of the city and the sea.

One of the good stuff was the free minibar! Really nice comfy bed. They had renovations done so everything looks new.

Our room was small, 2 pax with single beds, but it was good enough and cool enough since Penang is that hot.

There's this list of amenities that they have, and we asked for the power banks, but too bad they were out. And we were surprised that it's actually free- on loan basis. So am not sure about the other stuff on the list, might be on loan or free giveaway. No charges of items were on that list.

The down side, I would imagine parking might be difficult during the weekends. It's quite limited. And the booming noices that will come from the clubs surrounding the hotel. Also there were some nice ladies waiting around the corner in the dark.

A very Convenient Place to stay in

I stayed there together with my girlfriend in this hotel delux room.

Location
The location of this hotel is very accessible (30 mins from airport via cab) since the free CAT shuttle bus stop is just outside the hotel. There is also some night hawker, indian food stalls and chinese food stall (Red Garden) that sell food at a pretty cheap price. I love the oyster omelet, fried kway teow, Penang Laksa and BBQ squid in Red Garden. It is a nice place for supper with a \"live band\" performance. This Hotel is also near Komtar (bus central station) where one is able to take bus to travel to other attractions (Penang hill, ke lok si) and places (beaches, gurney plaza shopping mall).

Facilities and cleanliness
However, during my first night, we noticed the shower hose isn't working fine and there is ants on the tables... Being located above a club, the noise from the club will disturb your rest during the night. We didnt have a good sleep for first night. Fortunately, after we have complained to the staff on the second night, we are allowed to be upgraded to an executive room where is it more quiet, cleaner and with a working shower facility. I appreciate the responsiveness of the hotel staffs. Thank you for your help :)

It is pretty disappointing as the choices of food are limited and the food are pretty bland...therefore we will always go to neighbor hawker to have their local food for breakfast.

Not a hotel for luxury romantic stay but for budget and easy getaway :)

Reasonable stay

Merchant has confortable beds to sleep. Some of the room TV is not at the right position of the wall, very hard to watch when free time. There should be a weekly change of breakfast meal as some customers may come reguraly. I had the same breakfast 2 days in a row. Beside those, very clean and confortable hotel. Plenty of parking.

Enjoyable stay.

Room on the higher floor and not facing the main road offers one a good night sleep. Enjoyable stay. Quality of the buffet breakfast can be further improved.

Nice getaway

Despite the minor issues such as slow check in due to late booking and no welcome drinks despite it being said on the booking, it is a nice place for a weekend getaway or business trip. The best part is that it has an observation deck that is able to overlook the nice night sky and even able to catch the glimpse of the sunrise and sunset.

Nice simple hotel in Penang

Hotel seems to be renovated not long ago, room was comfortable. Probably due to the low cost there was not much facilities. Good location & service for its price.

Room along the hotel was pretty noisy in the night & morning. Was surprised stay came with breakfast but quality was lacking which I feel doing without is better.
