This is a strange little hotel

On the good side - it right in the centre of the city, it was quiet at night, the room itself was clean, continental breakfast was included and in a pleasant airy room - and Sanjeewa, the man looking after the hotel could not have been more helpful and kind

However the room was dominated by a huge bed but otherwise very cramped, the duvet wasn’t wide enough for the huge bed, it had a mishmash of strange old furniture, a tiny en-suite with nowhere to hang towels, not enough PowerPoints. It felt like staying with an eccentric, elderly aunt!!

Parking was 15 extra per night and at least 5-8 mins walk away - although the website said it was ‘available’ - to be honest this is a challenge in Canterbury

The Sri Lankan decor in the hotel was rather incongruous with the style of the property and was looking very faded with pealing wallpaper and chipped paintwork.

With a bit of investment and some interior design advice this could be a nice hotel

Having said all that Canterbury is a lovely city and we enjoyed our short break

Hotel is clean but very dated, room was never big enough for a double bed. Tv wouldn’t turn on, toilet door didn’t open fully due to the bed. Hot tap didn’t turn on and cold tap wouldn’t turn off properly. Unable to use the shower because the mount for the head was broken. Probably the worst hotel I’ve ever stayed in. Yes it was cheap but seen better hostels for less money.

The host Sanjeewa was welcoming, friendly and charming. My bed was comfortable and the facilities in my room were good, apart from the fact that I could not find a remote control for the TV, though this did not really matter to me. I had the only ground floor room, and although it faced out on to the street it was quiet and I was not disturbed. Breakfast, included in the price, was a typical continental one with a reasonable selection. There is no onsite parking, but you can stop briefly to unload your luggage, after which the proprietor will book you into a nearby ANPR car park at a special rate. Bars, restaurants and the magnificent Canterbury Cathdral are all within easy walking distance

The hotel is in a great location and the solo member of staff is friendly and helpful and works hard. The hotel itself, however, is tired and poorly maintained. It was a cramped room, the shower was held up by a bit of plastic, and there was hardly any water from it. The bathroom was tiny. For a quick cheap night it’s passable, but any longer than that would not be recommended.

I stayed overnight at Greyfriars Lodge during the recent hot weather. There were no fans or air conditioning in the room, so I don't think that I would recommend staying here over summer. I kept the bedroom window open for the fresh air, but this meant that the road noise from the street was louder.
The continental breakfast was available from 8-9am, but as the food was not set up in advance, it is advisable to arrive around 8.15 rather than 8am.

This property is perfectly located in the centre of Canterbury and extremely well priced. You are within walking distance of everything you want to visit. The rooms are small but adequate for a short stay. My only gripe is the low pressure on the shower. The breakfast was fine and certainly set us up for the day. Sanjeewa the host is a real pleasure. He was always available and was constantly checking that everything was okay. He is worked to the bone and is a real gem for the property owners.

Room and linen were clean. Building overall is old and rooms basic with aged furniture in basic repair.

Sink was so small it was barely usable shower was ok just.

Most annoying was the mascerrating toilets in the building which made a terrible racket every time flushed so from 0600 when people started getting up all you can hear is mechanical grinding.

Checkin was prompt and friendly

Use this location for a few nights if you are going you be out late and up early, needing a clean bed after a late night. It's a cost effective solution just off the high street.

Stayed here for one night (24/4/26). It was good value for money as far as I’m concerned. The Greyfriars Lodge is very old but it’s clean. We were very happy with the location. 10 min walk from Canterbury East Station. 4 min walk to Marlowe Theatre the main reason we came to Canterbury.
4 min walk to Butter Market and the Cathedral. The room we had was spacious and the staff very welcoming (Sanjeewa).
If you’re looking for modern place to stay then this Lodge isn’t for you. We like to support small businesses.

Greyfriars is fantastically located but the property is quite tired. The shower was hand held over a bath.
The “parking” is a garage a quarter of a mile away and quite expensive.
However Sanjeewa was the nicest and most helpful person ever. Nothing too much trouble! 5 stars for him.

The cold tap in en-suite was loose and the macerater toilet was very noisy.

Friendly check in but went down hill fast. As we entered what was supposed to be a deluxe room we couldn’t quite see what was deluxe about it. The photo of the advertised room was nothing like and if it was we wouldn’t have even made the booking. The shower was a disgrace, hardly any water came out of the head and the fitting was broken and didn’t stay in place. I double checked with the host to make sure that we had the correct room and unfortunately there was no mistake. We checked out and stayed somewhere else!!

He even allowed us to keep the luggage in a safe space in the lodge itself after checkout that may we could finish our lunch before we leave Canterbury. Will recommend the place to others.

Great place to stay if looking for somewhere that doesn’t cost too much and you need to be right in the heart of Canterbury. Check in was nice and easy, arranged payment for parking in nearby multi story with no issues. Staff were friendly and helpful. Room was a bit basic but honestly great value for money. You get what you pay for. Ideal for if you’re on a budget. We stayed in family room (2 adults and 2 children). Everywhere was walking distance. Would definitely use again.

There was one member of staff doing everything without support or security. I booked 5 nights. Area was rough at night and hotel guests were shouting and fighting two of the nights. I was frightened. It looked like manager had been beaten up, but he denied it. Walls were very thin and a couple in next room kept me awake most of night. It was disgusting. Breakfast was basic but there was limited fruit and fresh items. Club and pub opposite Lodge was extremely loud and rowdy well past 12am. This is not a good place for families or decent people to stay. Management need to get a security guard and more staff. They are obviously just interested in making as much profit as possible at the expense of the sole member of staff and the decent clientele. Rooms were clean and sole member of staff was helpful and polite, making the best of a bad set up.

The lack of heating too. The big radiator was not working and was replaced by a much smaller one which was too small to heat the whole room. The hotel manager kindly lent us his fan heater from reception but there needs to be something more permanent in place.

The hotel is well overdue for some investment. A substantial renovation is needed to overcome tired decor, poor en suite and shower, neglected reception area. Really can't recommend. However the saving feature was Sanjeewa, the manager, who impressed us with his professional and courteous approach. He did everything to help in difficult circumstances.

Generally tired, old and run down. Half expected this for the price so not that bothered about that. the location was good.

The problem.... bedbugs. Lots of the horrible little things. We've videos of them all around the room and unfortunately we didn't realise until the morning.

It's clear there's been an infestation for some time - there's actually reviews that we missed discussing this. It's clear though that this recent infestation has also been going on for a while... pale grey dried blood stains were visible on virtually all linen (easy to see when you look for it).

The hotel has ignored all attempts to discuss this issue.

The people were so nice and were always cleaning, but the toilet had some kind of a pump on it. When you flushed it would add water and then make an ungodly noise. This always made me jump. Worse if you used the toilet at night, with a full badder, the pump would activate. OH MY!

Great location. Just off high street, about 6/7 minute walk from either station, right next to Sainsburys express, and loads of restaurants bars etc
Very dated interior, doesnt look like its had an upgrade since the 90s, and could do with a renovation, carpets a bit frayed etc. However, having said that, was clean, the owner was charming, and considering the location is very good value.

For every thing that works well there's some other thing that doesn't, Room 9 has a new basin and loo but a shower with a door that's difficult to open. Plenty of shampoo and handwash but no general purpose soap or shower gel - you have to keep asking for things that should be there already. Rooms are not being checked or serviced, so the notice about hanging towels you don't want changed is pointless. Breakfast choices are erratic - brown bread and yoghurt on some days, not on others, and basics like coffee arriving late. The Lodge is not recommended to those with their own transport or who can't manage stairs as there is no lift. It generally appears to be lacking investment and truly dedicated staff.

It is very convenient for the City, 5 minutes walk from both the Marlowe Theatre and the Cathedral. The rooms and decor are a little dated but perfectly fine for a short stay.

My teenage children and I stayed just one night at the Greyfriars Lodge. It has a great, central location and the host, Sanjeewa, was very welcoming and helpful.
Beds are very comfy too!
Recommend this hotel for a short break. It is in need of some renovation but for a short time it is very acceptable.

Great location and value for money

The hotel is very well located in the centre of Canterbury, only a couple of minutes walk from the cathedral, with plenty of shops and restaurants nearby. Sanjeewa, who runs the hotel, was very friendly, welcoming, and always helpful during our stay. The room was spacious, clean and comfortable. Though the decor could use a bit of an update, this didn't affect our stay at all, and you can hardly expect more at such a reasonable price! A continental breakfast was also included with toast, crumpets, muffins, yoghurts, cereal, jams, honey, etc.

Though there wasnt any parking at the hotel we booked parking a minute's walk away through Just Park, which worked well for us. Sanjeewa did contact me prior to our stay though, advising about parking and offering to let us drop off luggage to save us having to walk with it.

We all really enjoyed our stay at Greyfriars Lodge and would happily visit again in the future.

This place is in a great location for the town and where we were headed. The room was described as premium twin room but unfortunately i would remove the word premium, it needs a lot more work. But for what we needed, a bed near to the town it was OK. Bed was comfy but if i can suggest anything it would be to look at things like curtains (ours were hanging off the window) general cleanliness dust and cobwebs...and a paint job. But our host / manager Sanjeewa was great, very friendly and even extended the breakfast times as it was after NYE. He was very welcoming, we would stay here again but that would be just for location.

The hotel is very nice and within 5 minutes walk of the centre. Sanjeewa was very nice. The continental breakfasts was good, plenty of breads, crumpets, cheese, ham and salami, etc.
The only bit of problem for us was that the room we were in, on the top floor, the wifi was extremely weak. We have to move around the room to find a connection near the door. Obviously we can't stay at the door all night so had to use our mobile data. Like some other reviews on here says, there's NO onsite parking despite whatever they advertise as. You can park in a car park abouts 8-10 minutes walk way for 15 pounds a day or find some on street parking further out.

Stay at Greyfriars Lodge

We arrived at Greyfriars Lodge and was met by Mr Sanjeewa who was polite and friendly. During our stay, he responded to our request for shower gels , towels among other things quickly. Breakfast was continental and Sanjeewa was was attentive.

Location is convenient and near to town centre. Will come back to stay at this hotel again if we visit Canterbury again. LIM & Family.

The location in terms of proximity to the centre of Canterbury was great and the street where the accommodation is located is really cool. The staff member on shift (Sanjeewa) was really nice and I couldn’t fault him.
There was a lot of street noise outside throughout the night and this seemed to be work related, rather than members of the public. Whilst I can’t blame this on the hotel, the original window was broken and stuck in an open position and this probably didn’t help. The room was described as a deluxe king size room. I don’t think two single mattresses, with a gap down the middle is quite the same and this was irritating. Also, the shower was below standard. It had very little water coming out of the head and no attachment for the hose and so I had to hold it throughout the shower. I think this is pretty poor and could easily be rectified.

The hotel was slightly outdated and could do with some upgrading, the shower has no attachment, breakfast was basic but plentiful, the room itself could have done with modernising however it was large and the bed was comfortable. Manager was lovely very accommodating looking after luggage until we was ready to go home. Ideal if your looking for something affordable as a base to explore from.

Although the property is a little old and tired, it was great for an overnight stay. Manager was lovely and breakfast; continental style and plentiful. Really close to Cathedral and other local attractions.

For those with mobility issues there were a couple of steep staircases to climb to get to upper floor rooms.

Fans were provided, but rooms were still stuffy, not too much of a problem if you like to be warm like me - it was a warm August night.

No on-site parking, you park in a public car park about 8 mins away and it costs £15 via the hotel for 24 hours. Make sure that you keep receipt for this.

Council empty bins at 6:30am on Monday morning. This is not a hotel issue, just to let light sleepers know, it happens all over the city.

Would go back in the future if in the area.

Glad we found it.

The best thing about this visit was the outstanding service of Mr Sanjeewa. His willingness to go above and beyond what was expected of him was surprising and refreshing. Another great plus of this lodge is its location. It is a bit outdated and in need of some small repairs but totally worth the money because it's clean, good bedsheets and towels, spacious, and offers a good car park deal. We were very happy with our stay. Thank you Sanjeewa for making it so pleasant.

This is an old building but has been made the best of & was v clean. Set in the centre of Canterbury within a stone's throw of the main areas. There are two main drawbacks. 1 There is no car parking at all as it is set in a no through narrow street. Car parking is offered & they will book it for you.It is charged per 24hrs & is a 10min walk away. The other is that breakfast is only Continental although nicely set out.

Extractor fan in the shower not clean neither was the skirting and shower surround .The mattress was faded frayed and stained .God knows how long the coffee sachets had been there as they were rock hard . Only one yoghurt left at breakfast

The staff was VERY kind & helpful. Dark, narrow stairs & very small room. Fridge in room, uncomfortable bed, no A/C but given fan. Had to have window open, woken up by sun rising at 4:20am and garbage man emptying glass at 5:15am. No hand towel or washcloth in bathroom. No shampoo only shower get that could be used on hair. Breakfast provided & appreciated. Staff worried we didn't eat enough, very kind. Offered to hold our luggage. Won't stay again.

Safe and clean

Sanjeev was kind, present and available. While the room was clean, the mattresses were not comfortable. Be mindful of packing small and not taking full suitcases up 3 flights of winding stairs. Otherwise a clean place to stay in Canterbury.

Absolutely terrible, we didn't stay the night. The hotel had more creaks than a haunted house.
The smell of old was a hell no, it could of been death... we couldn't be sure.
We didn't hang around for too long before ordering a stay at the Premier Inn a little further up the road.
There was a deep dark red/brown colour on the net curtains, we were 100% that was blood. The toilet was small and cramped, we believe people missed the toilet and aimed for the floor as the stench was unbearable.
Even to stay 10 minutes was unbelievable, my partner even sprayed her perfume around the room but the bad odour was over powering the stench.
We had to make up an excuse just to leave the hotel.
I paid for the death room for about £70, non refundable.... they can use that money for the demolition needed.
I paid £119 for Premier Inn and that included all you can eat breakfast, a no brainer.
Stay away from this poor b&b, not worth your hard earned cash.
3 Stars?? Were they on their last breath???
