Apartment has ants everywhere including on ans inside the kettle, bath/ shower and next door were so loud and their cigarette smoke was coming onto the room making it extremely uncomfortable to sleep in. Message properly but they said I should’ve called the night emergency number which was continently placed in reception but I had no WiFi or phone service on the island

We were originally in the pool vila which was terrible. Floorboards broken and unsafe. Shower terrible, steep stairs to bedroom and toilet had a sewage smell. Lights in bedroom didn’t work or either did outside lights. We asked to be moved to a bungalow which was great and would recommend.
Staff are amazing and can not do enough to help after we asked to be moved rooms.
Limited options for food allergies available even after asking prior to booking holiday.
Chef/cook did not seem interested to assist with this.
Island resort is for sale and hopefully new owners put some money into fixing it up as it badly needs it.
Would still recommend a visit as very relaxing and great snorkeling

Great location for snorkeling and diving! There are very nice diving site only accessible from the hideaway island. However, it doesn’t have much service. No breakfast provided. Lunch and dinner menu is very basic and room and facilities are a bit old. Not a fancy resort to stay but if worth to visit for a diving trip.

It saddens me to have to say the \"resort\" is so run down and neglected its a shame. We stayed in 4 different units during our stay (we had a large group) The units varied from broken toilets and showers, termites and ant infestations, super thin mattresses with springs in your back etc. The reef is trashed and destroyed. It will be completely dead with in the year since absolutely no care is taken to preserve anything. People stand directly on the reef to take pictures, huge chunks can be seen broken off everywhere and most of it is brown. The restaurant serves 10-12 options most of which they were out of the our entire 6 night stay. No eggs, chicken, salads, fruit, potatoes etc. The staff were all very nice and trying to make the best out of a situation where the owners are not present and very obviously only trying to squeeze what money they can out of this place. Its very sad as it could be so beautiful and exclusive. We visited Island Magic down the road and it was what this place could be if they cared. Good food, well taken care of and a reef that is thriving. I suggest you try there if you are looking for comfort.

The location is great and the snorkelling is excellent. The staff are fantastic. The resort needs some tender loving care. The gardens are well tendered, but the rest of the infrastructure needs work.
Food is a bit hit and miss but there is a Beach Bar nearby thank goodness.

Property is quite run down.
Had a beachfront bungalow but the stairs leading down to the beach were so overgrown with weeds they couldn't be used. It would have taken an hour to give it a tidy up and make it usable, but they just hadn't done it.
The decking of the cabin was rotten and dangerous. I stepped through the decking a couple of times and left (more) holes in it.
The water coming out of the cold tap was black and there was no hot water on the first 2 nights. Hot water was adequate on 3rd night and cold water was clear on 3rd night.
Staff were lovely and very helpful.
Food from the restaurant was good.

The staff at Hideaway are just lovely- so friendly and helpful and so tolerant . We stayed in the spacious family bungalows. The glass bottom boat and snorkel tour are great for familiarising your family with life on the reef and then you can explore on your own later. Only suggestion to make would be to give all visitors including day visitors even a 5 minute talk about the Marine Sanctuary and how fragile life is on the reef. Watching unmanaged kids as well as adults crush and kill coral was a bit up setting who didn’t understand the damage the were causing. Maybe mark off an area for beginners so they don’t cause further harm following cyclone with poor finning techniques on the coral. We hope to return one day- this place and beautiful staff were perfect for us and our budget

The snorkelling is great and staying at the property allows you to have the reef to yourself for a couple of hours in the morning. The beach bungalow we stayed in has a great view and balcony but is old, no tv, internet available at the office but not the room and they give the first couple of days free then charge after that to use internet. One restaurant on the island, food can take a while so get orders in early and brekky costs a bit so recommend bringing some wheet bix and milk (adds up with the kids), but liked the place and the local people are lovely. There's a little shop off the island near the village which has waters, soft drink biscuits etc for better prices.

I really love this island, the staffs in this hotel are really professional and devote their best effort to make sure you enjoy your stay.

Due to weather conditions, my original schedule was completely disrupted, and my flight was canceled in the last mins. I called this hotel to ask them whether I can change my reschedule stay. They said its ok, and tell me that I should come to the hotel ASAP because the storm is coming, and it was dangerous to travel in poor weather conditions in Port Vila.

Once I arrived, they help me to move my luggage in the heavy rain. I in fact stayed in this resort for 6 nights. The staff provided their best service to me. In addition, they help me to deal with the worst service airline in the world, Vanuatu Air.

To be honest, the resort has been closed for 3 years, and during my stay, I saw the staff and the hotel owner still working on making this resort back to its best after the pandemic.

In addition, the view and environment are so nice under good weather beyond words can explain. During night time, walking on the beach and seeing the milky galaxy, walking around the garden, etc.

anyway, stay in this hotel for few days is nice experience and I will like to comeback.

This is a gorgeous island. Accommodation is basic but very comfortable. Be aware there is no air conditioning when booking. It was clear that the resort has been severely impacted by Covid/cyclones but they are working very hard to rebuild. They only re-opened in December 2022. A very enjoyable place to stay. I would definitely recommend and would stay again. Do yourself a favour and stay here. The snorkelling directly out the front of the restaurant is some of the best we saw on our travels around Efate. Plus the underwater post office is a plus!

Peaceful and relaxing sanctuary...apart from when passengers from cruise ships in Port Vila visit - but resident guest areas (including small but lovely pool) off limits to them!
Restaurant offerings limited but tasty and plentiful - fish coconut curry a standout!
More could and should be done to protect the house reef from damage - signage at the (superfluous) shoreside steps is ineffective. There is opportunity for (brief) education of guests about coral reefs and the importance of their protection (globally, as well as locally) which would at least make a plea of ignorance implausible.
Bungalow (9) accommodation very comfortable with beautiful sea view, reached by pleasant garden pathway stroll. Repair of (corrugated metal) roofing required where free edges corroding badly, otherwise more extensive (& expensive) roof repairs await.
Resort staff are this place's singular asset - outstanding!
Only one significant complaint - as we booked HIR specifically on account of their scuba dive centre, it was disappointing to learn on arrival that it had not yet reopened after Covid shutdown - a fact which should have been available on their website, or made clear in response to our (unanswered) enquiries about booking diving.
All was not lost, however, as we did manage to organise one day of diving with Jerry's Dive Services - seems he's something of a scuba legend in Vanuatu, and certainly we can recommend him unreservedly!

staff were awesome. It was the happiest place we have stayed in many years of travel. The kitchen staff sang as they prepared breakfast and it sounded as if an entire choir was serenading us. It was low season when we visited and the pwners happened to be on site. They were very welcoming and helped solve a double booking problem we had , reassured us and sorted it all out with good humour and efficiency.

It was amazing to be able to snorkel straight off the beach, perfectly clear water and loads of fish. The snorkel safari on a daily basis was fantastic. The meals at the restaurant were delicious. This is a perfect location to get away from everything, nice and relaxed. Not a 5 star resort, a bit worn and a rustic feel, but views from bungalows are definitely 5 star.

They will try to rip you off !

Paradise for the week

Amazing stay... we had the Villa with private pool which was lovely as it was peaceful, a little windy on this side, but very scenic and comfortable in the villa. The diving, snorkelling, glass bottom boat, kayaks and all the other activities are fantastic. All the staff are really friendly and it’s so good to be on the Island with all the amazing The sea life right there as soon as you enter the water! The cinema nights and night snorkelling are cool. Food and drink was nice. We did a trip to the Zip line adventure which was definitely worth doing and also a walk into the village to see the locals. The beach bar just by the ferry was nice, but for meals we loved the coconut curry on hideaway which you have to try! We had an amazing holiday!

While a little dated, the rooms are clean and comfortable. The only issue was lots of wind while we were there blew sand into our Bungalow! But, you don't spend much time there, anyway, as the snorkelling and diving are AMAZING! All the staff are brilliant, and the dive crew are patient and careful, and a lot of fun. The food is also great. About what you would expect to pay back in Australia, but really high quality ingredients, cooked well. (Though breakfast is included, it is pretty basic.) If we return to Vanuatu, we would definitely stay here again!

Regular hotel that tries to surcharge you

The location is great and staff is really gentle. However, the rooms are really old but clean. There is also many lizard and bugs in the room.

However there is few things to note:
1. The hotel hardly replies to phone calls.
2. Due to (1), we weren't able to organise transportation. We had to pay an flat rate 2000 VAT for a TAXI (for 3pax), but the information centre guaranteed that this hotel should refund transportation cost. They didn't.
3. Hotel charges ridiculous price to head back to the airport (4000 VAT for 3pax) for a minibus. This is ridiculous, twice the price than taxi for 15mn drive! (mini bus would probably cost 500-1000max normally)
4. The room is near a noisy generator
5. The room has no curtains, which is a privacy concerns.
6. The Australian hotel management remained irresponssive on our requests. A lot of promise to check, but nothing done in practice

Few other things for like minded photographers, this place is advertised with many drone shots, but it is forbidden to fly drone here (too close to airport).

So yes you stay in a nice island, but be ready to pay a large premium. The Australian management will not help you at all. I have been to other place in Port Vila before, this is by far the worst experience I have in a hotel.

Relaxing place to stay with grandchilren /family

We had ten days here over Easter. Thoroughly enjoyed all activities on offer at Hideaway. Thanks Rodney, Christina, Olivia and your lovely staff. Tropical fruit on breakfast buffet a favourite...and the curry at dinner. Lots to do around Efate. Bungalow 5 had lovely views across Mele Bay. The pool was a favourite with the grandchildren. And the snorkelling and glassbottomed boat. And the village walk. And the film night with popcorn. And your surprise Easter Eggs! We took the little boat over to the Beach Bar for hamburgers and the Circus one night and Fireshow on Friday night. Loved the Secret Garden history panels. Loved K2 restaurant on Mele Road. Loved the rescued turtles at the ‘Zoo’ beyond Vila. And swinging on the ropes at Blue Lagoon. All eleven of us fitted into a van which was a novelty!

Excellent location; the snorkelling is awesome, lots of fish and coral too see. We managed to see a sea turtle as well which was very exciting. It is very much a coral beach so make sure you bring beach shoes. The restaurant on the island has really nice and affordable food but not a huge variety so if you are staying for a few nights expect to travel off the island for dinner. We stayed in the villa with the pool, the villa was spacious and comfortable but a little worn. Biggest disapointment of the whole stay was the bi-fold doors directly opposite the bed leading out the the deck had no blinds or curtains or anything that would block the light, waking up at 6am on holiday isn't fun and having to creep around the room to get dressed is a hassle. The staff were lovely and very helpful, when our hot water broke in the villa they let us shower in another villa until ours was fixed. Super easy ferry transport across to the island at all times of the day and night, only a 3 minute ride. Very relaxing spot all in all could just do with a bit of TLC.

Hideaway was fantastic! The snorkeling there is one of the best things to do in Vanuatu and if you stay it's free and unlimited. Our room was not luxurious but definitely had everything we needed, including great views from the patio. Breakfast was basic but good and the staff were friendly and helpful. The restaurant is simple but perfectly located on the beach. You can also get the free boat back to the pier and eat at the Beach Bar for good burgers. The only drawback is that there aren't any food shops accessible for snacks and drinks. Other than that, fabulous!

Great snorkelling, nice location, staff are very friendly but provide poor customer service. Room B12 has a rat living in the roof, it' s very active at night makes lots of noise making it difficult to sleep. Found rat feces on toilet paper and tops of walls. Got food poisoning from rib eye veal from the restaurant. Mentioned these issues at check out to let them know but was met with silence. Unbelievable!

I love the property in general, and the underwater post office is just such a cool and novel idea. The coconut curry at the Beach Bar is AMAZING, by the way. It is a must have. I couldn't give it 5 stars because we stayed in a share room, which was our own room, but shared bathroom, and the shared bathrooms were not maintained wonderfully. The floors were constantly wet, and the trash overflowing. Tons of mosquitos, but I guess that can't be helped with open doors and a wet environment.

We stayed in one of the villas. It was a little dated and had seen better days. The staff were very friendly but we had no hot water for the first three days of our stay. While we accept that these things happen there was no offer of any redress in any way, shape or form which we found a little galling given we were staying for a week and paying over $200 per night. An apology and a small credit to our account would have gone a long way but we got not much of the first and none of the second from the owners. Very disappointing in that respect.

We stayed one night in a bungalow, which was really spacious and comfortable, and had private access via stairs to the beach. We didn't eat at the restaurant, other than for the included breakfast, which was fine. We ate instead at the Beach Bar, on the mainland side. Great for snorkelling, and for the included glass bottom boat tour, and easy to get taxis etc. Recommended for a short stay.

Good location on the water, We stayed in a 1 BR Villa which was outstanding and beautifully appointed with breath taking views. There were however, some maintenance issues - but management ensured staff quickly attended to issues we raised. A few other little repairs here and there and a tidy up of the garden would have ensured I gave the villa a 10 out of 10. Staff friendly. Daily fresh flowers, fluffy towels and a spotless room were a treat. Value for money

Beautiful setting, nice staff, but needs some work on property condition and coordination. My stay started inauspiciously as my airport pickup arrived one hour late and the phone number listed on my confirmation was disconnected. It took two additional phone calls to get someone to pick me up. No apology was offered for the delay.

The setting for the property is gorgeous -- on a languid tropical beach with great snorkeling right offshore. However, the property itself has seen better days. The door to my room was warped and required effort to close. Soap dispensers in toilets were either not functioning or empty. Rubbish and construction debris were littered around the property. The property needs some TLC.

So overall a good stay due the the setting and the friendly staff, but definitely some work to be done.

Awesome location

Not everyone’s ideal holiday but we had a great time. Yes, the rooms are basic but if you’re there to relax by the pool or what felt like a private beach, or go diving on the doorstep then it’s perfect.

The staff and management were great and loved our 2 year old daughter.

It can get busy during the day with day trippers to the island but by evening it was quiet and peaceful.

We’d definitely visit again.

Great snorkeling

I usually stay at Hideaway because it's great value at a great location.
Friendly helpful staff, they do a mean curry in the restaurant, close to town.
You can do a dive course, snorkel, or lay on the beach.

Nice to visit, but not recommended for a prolonged

Booked a basic bungalow, but had to upgrade at our own expense because the bungalow was disappointing. The bedroom had a large window which could not be opened. Two tiny windows above the bed lacked adequate flyscreens and the bathroom was full of midges. Nightfall would have guaranteed mozzies. Electrical wiring was unsafe, being pulled out of the wall, where an electric jug was situated. Saucers were wet, having evidently been placed under the bathroom tap to be washed and a teacup was unwashed with the reminents of coffee evident.
The dive staff, security staff, ferry staff and hospitality staff were friendly and helpful. The Friday night fire dance at the Beach Bar on the mainland was world class entertainment.

Excellent snorkelling and diving

Hideaway Island was a great experience. The staff work hard to keep the rooms pools and surrounds clean and inviting and are friendly and very happy to help. Just ask for a bus driver recommendation or any other local information required. Hideaway Island is not a 5 star resort, however, they are not trying to be. It is friendly, relaxed and the snorkelling is just off the beach and the managers take very special care of the reefs around the Island.
Don't forget to try out the Port Villa markets.

Great location, beautiful people

Had a great time snorkeling and diving we didn't leave the island until day six of our ten day stay.
Our teenage sons got their scuba diving tickets and didn't want to leave.
The bungalows are quite big with separate bedroom and single beds or bunks in the living area. Management and staff where terrific and I couldn't say anything bad about our experience.

Superb location, views and staff

Check in experience was faultless, from the staff helping us get onto the ferry, all the way through to taking us to our room.

As noted elsewhere, the resort has seen better days and is looking a little tired, so we were not surprised at all to find out this was reflected in the room. That said the location was stunning and soon overcame any misgivings elsewhere.

The “breakfast” is just toast, muffins and fruit/juices, if you want extra it will cost you, which was a surprise, but to be fair we didn’t go hungry or were left hungry. Just another FYI if you are expecting a full English everyday.

We were very lucky, as the island was relatively empty for the week we were there, (4th-11th Dec) on the last day it got really busy and the review would have been very different.

So, to the beach! The beach itself is essentially broken coral, so take shoes, no barefoot possible. The reef around the island was very nice with lots of marine life, obvious signs of bleaching and morons standing on the reef (despite signs everywhere prohibiting this) but on the whole very good.

Food wise, we quite limited but tasty and not too expensive, if you live in a large city then the prices will be familiar, my advice is go to the beach bar next to the ferry jetty for a wider range of food and (slightly) cheaper pricing. The fire show on Fridays is also worth a look.

Last point, take lots of bug spray and use it all the time. The insects on the island are quite voracious.

2 1/2 stars, just as it claims

This is our 3rd visit to Hideaway island but staying there for the first time. The bungalow is a good size for our family of 4. The rooms are very, very basic. The beds are clean but the same can't be said about the bathrooms. One of the toilets didn't flush and the kitchen sink was blocked. They were quick to fix any issues though.

One feature of the bungalow is open ceiling. There is a slanted roof but since there's no ceiling, even in the toilet and bathroom. You hear everything!!

We choose this property for the location. The snorkeling is great, even though a lot of the corals are all covered by green moss. Maybe due to the cyclone or climate change. There is still lots of colourful fishes.

The staff are nice and friendly but definitely on Vanuatu time.

If you choose this property keep in mind that it is 2 1/2 stars so keep your expectation low and you'll be fine.

Good location if you want peace and quiet.

Hideaway Island is located about 15 minutes bus ride from the main town (about 300 vatu per person one way). The resort itself is very run down and needs work. We asked for a number of maintenance issues to get fixed, but nothing got fixed during our week holiday duration. The Managers say they will look into it despite raising the issues several times, but don't. Most staff are friendly but if you are looking for a flash resort, this is definitely not the place to stay.

The beach and snorkelling are worth it. Eat across at the Beach Bar as its alot cheaper and much better atmosphere. Hardly anyone was eating at the restaurant on the premises while we were there.

In a nut shell, time to spend some money!

I have been a regular visitor to Hideaway Island for some years. Having been in this industry and well aware of what the elements can do, I can only praise the regular staff on their efforts to keep Hideaway running as well as it does. Right now the hard part, only one meal was memorable , the curry, lovely! Breakfast, chopping up a couple of local grapefruit and a bit of pawpaw, does not rate, nor do the dry little cakes. We do pay for this meal, it is included in accommodation, yes I could have paid for a cooked alternative, but have little appetite for this first thing in the morning. I will not comment on the beach facilities as I could see others enjoying themselves, I had a cold, however we were staying in the privately owned rooms with a pool, yes I did enjoy my swim . Sad to see the house has still not been adequately cared for, a dislodged gutter allowed to drip for a long time! has rotted wood . We paid the extra, got full time wifi and a tv, a real bonus given the humid weather. I would however like others to be able to have access to a tv , weather has been very inclement this year and it is nice to have the option. Books can be heavy with weight restrictions. Not everyone can handle the numerous sandflies, which are everywhere in the Islands this year. The staff do a wonderful job, but I think a dinner of fish and chips , my fish came battered on a stick! is hardly up to the standard, I compared this meal and pricing to many others enjoyed in the past.

A very relaxing Hideaway

This is now our 3rd visit to Hideaway in 2 years and already planning our next trip. The staff is absolutely amazing, courteous and very kind and helpful. The diving sites are very relaxed and pleasant. A sanctuary on earth. Looking forward to our visit again. Tank yu Tumas

Rooms were clean and had a good fan but the double bed is too small for a couple (best to get 2 single beds).
Shared bathrooms could be better maintained.
The island is lovely, staff is friendly, snorkels and fins are free to see the coral.
The restaurant is good, but has restricted options for vegetarians.
Breakfast is very good, lots of fruit, cereal, breads, pastry, coffee.
It is very easy and quick to cross to the main island and free of charge if you are staying in the island. There's another restaurant/pub right at the jetty and it is also very good, for those staying longer looking for more options.
Very enjoyable, reasonably priced, great breakfast, lovely staff.

Rundown and in need of some money spent on it!

This was our second visit to Hideaway Island and we were disappointed to see that the place was even more run down that the last visit which was only in 2015. About time the owners spend some money on an upgrade. They also need to take some responsibility for keeping visitors from standing on the reef! A floating exclusion zone would help the reef recover which it is never going to do if it keeps getting abused! There seems to be no inclination from management to do anything to help preserve the reef which is the drawcard for this resort. Even having better signage in a number of languages might help! Seriously - would not go there again!

Me and my girlfriend loved this place. You are literally on a tiny island! The staff is really friendly, the snorkeling was fantastic and the place was so beautiful! I definitely recommend it and will be back for sure!

Lovely relaxing bungalows and facilities

Staying at Hideaway really made our trip that bit more special as it has such a lovely relaxed atmosphere with snorkelling at your doorstep that was amazing! The fish were plentiful and very friendly that I truly felt immersed in the island lifestyle. We cant wait to go back and enjoy the amazing water views from our bungalow. Getting into Port Villa is easy access with ferry running all day and night as needed. Buses were always available to take us where we wanted to go. Staff were friendly and helpful with anything we needed.

Diving paradise

Had a great stay in the \"Villa No Pool\". It was huge and generously equiped with a full kitchen and laundry!
This was a diving holiday for us, and Hideaway Island is a divers paradise.
The ferry to and from the mainland was 24 hours and would come the moment the driver saw you on the jetty. Not much to do on the mainland though, unless you go into town in Port Villa.

We stayed two nights in a double bedroom, I wouldn't recommend this option. The shared bathroom is not clean and the room we stayed in (No.4) is quite dark and depressing. For the rate we paid there must be better places in Efate !
The snorkeling is awesome and the staff is friendly, but the whole place needs an upgrade !!

Love Hideaway!

The setting here is so peaceful and relaxing. Great snorkeling, too!
Staff was absolutely wonderful and so accommodating when I first wanted to stay a few extra days and then when I *needed* to stay a few extra days due to my flight being rescheduled due to flooding at my destination. So thankful for all of their help with everything. Highly recommend staying here.

Very relaxing and peaceful experience

We stayed in a twin share room. Hideaway Island resort was splendid because it is on a separate island off Port Vila. The only thing I would say is to pick a room with air conditioning if you cannot sleep in the heat very well. It can get very humid and hot some nights. But besides that everything was terrific. Staff were very helpful and friendly. Plenty of free activities as a guest- stand up paddle boarding, snorkelling, boat tours and local village tour. The food at the restaurant is also really great.

Perfect for underwater stuff

Location is superb for underwater activities and in the mornings and evenings one does feel hidden away. Staff are friendly and overall competent. Prices are ok for food and beverages, choices are limited. There are some really cheap rooms to be had for low budget travellers and some lovely private sunset views for couples in bungalows. In the daytime the island is overrun with day-trippers. Access to the island is by 24 hour ferry service which is reliable. Trip into town is possible fairly easily but can be costly when cruise ships have landed so overall not a good option for people who want to hit the town daily. Water supply in room was patchy, mostly a trickle, sometimes nothing, rarely good flow.

Great location & the local staff are awesome.

We stayed in one of the beach bungalows, nice and private and close to the water. Rooms were comfortable however the facilities / decor needed updating. Condition does not justify cost of bungalows. (Ie Bathroom needs a update, shower knobs faulty, cracked tiles etc) The staff were friendly & helpful. Breakfast was the same thing every day. Cruise ship season tends to overwhelm the resort, would seem during the day these guest take priority over staying guests. The Beach Bar can experience long queue's, these guys need bar staff offering drinks with a cash bar to cruise ship sunbathers up & down the beach rather than having them all waiting at the bar. Resturant menu was pretty basic, drinks expensive. Didn't really enjoy eating there. Very little engagement from bar staff or atmosphere during dinner times. Need more activities during the day. Finally ditch the music playlist ! Get some decent beats, last thing folks need on vacation is Kelly Clarkson waling in the background..

Overall we had an enjoyable stay. The local resort staff are fantastic and the dive crew awesome bunch of guys.

Resort management need to make a few tweaks as this place has the potential to be more than amazing.
