TERRIBLE PLACE TO STAY.

The “hotel” was terrible. When we got into the hotel there was water all over the floor. Afterwards the next morning, the ceiling was leaking all over the floor in front of the bathroom door. You can hear everyone coming in and out of the hotel as the door slams really loudly. There is a cigarette smell that comes from leaving your window open but if you close it there is no fan, ac, or ventilation in the room.

This place was horrible: dirty and in poor condition. Cabinet door was broken, shower rod had duck tape on it, bathroom fixtures were attached to the wall with half the amount of screws so were barely hanging on and unusable, my bathroom sink wouldn’t drain, the heat was on in 95° weather and there was no fan, there were stains on the walls, the door to the building was unsecured, and the entryway and stairwells were filthy. It was not at all as it appeared in the Expedia pictures when we booked it and management never replied to my email. Avoid.

To summarise my reasoning and experience - this is why I believe that a full refund is necessary :-
* Room was not available on arrival (email indicated that it was)
* Room had not been cleaned (and probably wouldn’t have in time unless we had arrived at 12:30pm and made contact re the missing key).
* Cleaner took well over an hour to get this tiny single room clean.
* Room looks (and is) absolutely nothing like the photos represented on Wotif - room is not an apartment, it is a single small room with a small bathroom attached.
* Issues with room:-
- it is filthy and potentially dangerous - there are obvious signs of toxic mold throughout the room and especially in the bathroom and around the kitchenette
- The shower door is broken and hanging off - being glass this is serious
- The toilet seat is hanging off, moves from side to side
- There is a “decorative” piece of wood that is hanging off the wall and has nails exposed
- There are external lights that cannot be turned off that light up the entire room all night
- it is extremely dated
And there were several attempts by people (or one person) to gain access into the room whilst we were in it (before I even made the complaint)

I chose this place for a specific reason, which was the distance from my friends staying in an apartment close by. So my only requirements were a good night sleep and cleanliness without breaking the bank since I was only for 30hrs in Zurich. The property matched all of them.

Had no power for our whole stay

Turned up after check in and the room hadn’t been cleaned. Power went out within our first few hours of being there, contacted the helpline multiple times and they said they’d send out an electrician. They never did! Spent the whole trip with no way to charge phones in our room and no lights!

Fan so broken and out of balance that it couldn’t be used
Shower head hose broken and sprayed all over the bathroom
Was advised routine maintenance was to occur during my stay, so I told them about these issues, but nothing happened
Was advertised as daily maid service. Didn't happen
The common area is filthy.
If you a light sleeper, I suggest staying somewhere else. The trolly tram runs directly outside

The neighbourhood is really nice, easy to get on transport. What was a bit confusing when I got keycode when registered I thought it was the room code. I got an email the day before about mainfloor access code and didn’t know it was room code as well. So was a bit stressed when tried KeyCode and it didn’t work. Just randomly punched in main floor door code and it opened the room.

Only booked this because it was close to an event I was attending and was happy at the price. I was surprised by all the in-room amenities because I want looking for that. A person staying longer would have benefited from the kitchen, dining table and ironing board. I was impressed by the large bathroom including a whirl pool bath tub.

You have been warned : do not stay here is you don’t want your money to be stolen, stranger entering your room when you are naked, no toilet paper for the whole trip and climbing up 4 huge staircases with your big suitcase. I paid quite a lot for this property for 5 nights, and it has been the worst nightmare of my 2 months traveling through Europe. Its the worst property I ever stay in in my entire life. First, it is very far from city center. Second, they double charged you and acted stupid when you wanted your money back. Jerome who is a staff here ignored my request to have toilet papers for the whole trip and ignored my request to refund me for the double charge. My friend and I ended up rushing to groceries to buy toilet paper as the staff here can’t be contacted when you need them. Trash is not collected in the room, no change of towel, they said they don’t do that for anything less than 7 nights (we stayed 5 nights). Such a horror! do not stay here. Save yourself from nightmare like mine.

No communication from owner to allow bags in room early! Bathroom was unclean and smelled like cigarettes, kitchen was extremely small and only had 1 pot and 1 pan, and the pan was in poor shape, room was unclean and dusty, very noisy at night!

Good location, clean

The hotel has an automated check-in and check-out system. The staff sends you all information in advance - it is easy to find.

The place is nothing special but clean and quiet, ideal to stay for a couple of nights. The hotel is close to a tram stop that takes you straight to the city center and train station.

Pros: Good location. Had line of sight with fireworks during Zurifest. Mostly clean.

Cons: Ridiculously small bathroom. Shower head is not ideal. Slanted roof above bed and bathroom. Unintuitive check in hidden behind garage. Very hot in the summer. No AC.

Never again, with such booking type, you call the place and get reply for a restaurant table. There is no reception for checking-in nor for checking-out.
What a mess ! The worst so called hotel you may have in this site. I do not understand how this can fit in your hôtel.com site !

Location of the property is decent but the bathroom was in terrible condition, the shower head was badly damaged and there was a strong smell of mold in the bathroom. The checkin process was quite complicated as there is no official front desk, the property is managed by the restaurant staff in the lobby which were not all up to speed on the checkin/check out process. Overall not a great experience.

Good Hotel with comfortable rooms

The hotel is ccessible via good transport links to the Centre. Rooms are reasonably spacious with comfortable beds, a small table, a writing desk and a well-equipped 2-hob kitchenette. There is a mini-supermarket nearby.
On the downside, Wi-Fi was not very stable and the reception desk is not manned all the time. This means that check-out can be a challenge. I had to leave the key and then confirm payment by phone with the receipt being e-mailed.
It is a good hotel, though, and reasonably priced for what you get.

This was a nightmare. I requested 3 beds the room only had 2 twins bed with no other space for another bed. Reservation was cancelled prior arrival and we had two make a new one. Nobody in reception to help. No elevator for bags and luggage and No Airconditioning in a 73F degree weather

My husband and I are world travelers....we were excited about visiting Zurich to experience its wonderful culture....We
traveled a great distance (Little Rock, Arkansas) which took almost a day to get from the US to Switzerland. We were
greeted at the airport with friendly customer service agents at the tourist information booth. We had no problem getting
from the airport to the hotel....tired but looking forward to the new adventure of Zurich! When we arrived at the hotel reception area, not a hello welcome to Zurich! but you're here to early and check in time isn't until 2pm was our greeting
front desk agent, not sure of the correct spelling.....don't know what changed her mind but we were able to check in later we went out and needed directions and info....her mannerism and attitude was not friendly and I had to keep asking for additional information (tram service, or taxi, distances to certain areas, walkable or not) general info that most tourists need help with.....we stayed 5 days at this small modern, beautiful, quiet hotel. But she was the only staff person we encountered and was not friendly at all. LOVE the hotel, this staff person needs to be more friendly toward visitors sometimes this makes the difference whether we might return or recommend the hotel to others.

Nice room but difficult with parking and check in

Very limited parking and also there no one there after 5pm and didn't answer the emergency number for a few times, people are meant to enter their booking reference in a self check in machine, but mine wasn't recognised and then the lady said why didn't you enter your last name? As if people are getting creative when they're clearly asked for for a booking reference. Room isself was ok, bathtub and shower and little kitchen, clean, nice, all ok, except didficult check in, parking.

Good for a quick stay!

We found the check in process to be difficult. The building was hard to find. Once we located the building, the entrance was in the back. You then walk three flights up where you will find the check in desk. The room was very small, but that is to be expected I suppose. The bathroom was a relatively fine size actually. There was no AC (as stated). The towels and sheets were all very clean. We only stayed one night and it served its purpose!

The pictures on the website in no way related to the reality of our room. The bathroom was tiny and rundown with gaff tape holding up the shower rail. The floors creaked and the climb up the stairs is a hassle. The room was not a place you want to be.

The room is nice and practical. There is a small kitchen in the room with a fridge, microwave oven, plates, etc. which is convenient. The check-in is automatic but simple. Parking may not be simpe in the area. There is a direct tram loine to the center. For a few days stay it is a good choice.

4 day trip to Zurich

The hotel was generally clean, check-in was really smooth and easy which was great after a long days travel. We didn't get to speak to much of the staff over our stay.
Location is great - it's quite a distance from the city centre but you can jump on a tram and you'll get to where you want in no time.
Personally, slightly disappointed with pictures v. reality but as it was a cheaper option compared to other hotels I have no complaints or as such.
Great little place to stay if you're on a budget.
The room got really hot and in the mid-october we had to keep windows open over night (which is not an issue).

It's ok for a short stay and when you are out over the day
The curtains are too small and do not cover all over the windows
The curtains are made of a very cheap cloth and in the night the lights of street lamps come through
The shower is very very small and if you move inside the shower it happens that you touch accidentally with your body the handle of the faucet and suddenly you shower with very cold or very hot water = not so funny.....
There is no elevator
The restaurant on the ground floor is very good
For breakfast you have to walk about 10 minutes to a restaurant or you have to buy food in a near by COOP shop = that's ok

A Little Inconvenient

What Hotels.com doesn't tell you is that you're supposed to use the automated check in machine that's at the back of the building. We wandered around and nobody told us to use the machine, and the directions were on the door which was propped open covering these directions. At the reception it said to call, which led to a cordless phone 2 feet away in the empty reception, so it ended up being very frustrating waiting around for someone to come by. And because it's a good 30 minute walk from the city we missed our chance to go to the art museum. Overall the room was clean and nice, but the kettle they offered didn't work, and the low pitched ceilings made it easy to bump your head constantly.

Good location and nice hotel

This is a nice little hotel. The room was very nice and clean and the staff were very nice to us. It was good for us as we were only staying for two nights, but there was no air-con in our room and the windows dont open much, there was no lift which was quite difficult with four suitcases... It was very close to the city centre and you can just get the tram number 3 which comes every 5/10minutes. I would definetly stay again and recommend but it would have to have air-con.

This is a lovely hotel that delivers excellent service on all fronts within its price range. It won't be like the top brands but it was a great deal considering the standard Zurich hotel prices. Staff was very helpful, including, for instance, providing free access to a printer. Nice view and balcony. The kitchenette was very useful. Groceries stores located nearby.

Great for budget travelers

The room was large and had a kitchenette, which we took great advantage of. However, the room had a mild smell like that of wet paint, which we didn't enjoy. The hotel seems fairly new, even if its decor is very plain. The lack of elevators was not a huge problem for us, but I would recommend that visitors to the hotel not pack suitcases heavier than they can carry upstairs.

Overall, we enjoyed our stay. We liked the wireless Internet, the flexibility to store and prepare our own food, and the proximity of the hotel to the street. We might stay again. If one has no other place in mind, I would be comfortable recommending this place to other travelers (provided they can walk to and from the train stop).

When I arrived, there was loose dirt behind the toilet. It remained there until I left. There is no lift to the third floor. Otherwise, everything was fine, the location is really good, near the city centre but quiet, in a very nice neighborhood. I had a beautiful view from my window. The kitchenette had everything you would need for preparing your own meals (which I did not). WLAN worked well, there was even a desktop computer in my room. The room price is absolutely okay for what is offered.

Very Good Value once you get inside!

Hotel was fine for the price. Only major issue is no lobby or no one to talk with if you cannot get in through the automated system. I showed-up at 2pm to check-in and my reservation was not listed. SO, the door wouldn't open an allow me to get to the "front desk". As I was informed, the automated system does not update with current reservations until all the rooms are cleaned.

I was lucky enough to find and employee in front of the hotel. Once inside, the staff was great and the room was totally adequate considering that this is Zurich and the price was attractive. The location is a very good neighborhood about 5 minutes from Old Town.

Comfy hotel close to transport.

Clean, comfy hotel room an easy tram ride away from Zurich. Customer service was good, didn't have too much interaction with staff as we used the self check-in, but the receptionist came and knocked on our door after we'd settle in to make sure everything was ok. Would stay here again.

Location is the only reason to stay here

Starting off with the good of it... California House is 10 minutes from Zürich Hbf (8 min by tram + 2 min walking) with trams running about every 4 min or so. Couldn't find the self check-in at all until someone told me it's in behind the actual building. Once found, it was a piece of cake to use.

The room wasn't anywhere close to the size that the pictures make it seem. What also didn't help was that my room was on the top floor by the roof, meaning I had to duck down to get around half of the room. Bed was moderately comfortable. The television did not work. After the staff told me it was working fine, it still did not. The staff did take care of an issue with one of the windows at least. Wireless internet worked very well.

You can hear everything going on in the other rooms from the stairwell and wallways. Thankfully, once in your room, all outside noise is blocked out. This was fully tested as the room next to me had a baby crying every single time I walked to and from my room, but never heard it at all while inside my room.

Location and price were great. The staff is mostly absent. There was no phone in the room which was very surprising. There was a computer/tv with advertised free internet. Our computer did not work. I asked the desk for help but they could not figure it out. I was trying to print boarding passes so they let me try 2 other computers, none of them worked. The tv only worked the first day. The shower curtain kept falling down and our door handle fell off. All in all the hotel worked for our purpose.

I can't recommend this hotel.

The hotel entrance was difficult to find. Had to carry luggage up stairs. We had to self check in even though it was before 5 pm. The person at the reception desk was unfriendly. They told us the tram that takes you around town wouldn't accept credit cards. We went to a bank and exchanged U.S dollars for Francs. Turns out the trams do accept credit cards. We waisted an hour exchanging money not to mention the fees that were involved in doing so. The room was tiny even by European standards. The A/C wasn't working so we had to open the windows. That would have been fine but the road traffic was so loud it kept us awake all night. This hotel is a total rip off in my opinion.

Best deal in an expensive city

The place was very nice with our own kitchen area, computer, and balcony. They also had free laundry right in the building. Although it seemed expensive compared to other cities in Europe, this place had one of the best prices with nice quality in the city. Location was nice too, just a short tram ride from the center.

Good location and price for what you get

This hotel was perfect for my travels as a single woman. It felt very safe. It was far enough from the city center that the nights were quiet, but it was seconds from a tram station, which took you to the city center in 5 mins. Staff is only available 8-5 each day, but they are extremely helpful and knowledgable about the city and how to get around it. Room comes with a small kitchen, perfect for saving some money and having breakfast/dinner in the room (Switzerland is pricey!). The only downside is no air conditioning, but it didn't feel necessary and I went in July.

Overall it was ok. But couple of days they did not bother to change the towels, clean the bathroom. Computer/Internet/Wifi was not working at all. The receptionst did change the computer but still not working. This was like a hostel so naturally we were not expecting any services, reception used to close at 5pm so we could not see her most of the time. Still we like the hotel.

Nice quiet hotel

Nice location, quiet picturesque neighborhood, tram stop very close and cafe around the corner. Only a 6-8 minute tram ride to city center, or a 20-25 minute walk, I did both. Affordable, clean, staff could be nicer but overall a good experience.

Good cheap stay in zurich

I needed a last minute room in Zurich and this one was juat fine. It was clean, and very basic. There was a little kitchenette at was nice, although I didn't get the chance to use it. For zurich prices you can't really beat it. It is very close to a train stop (maybe 3 minute walk). I got a little lost trying to find it but it wasnt too hard to navigate. If you are taking the train to klutzplatz take the road that has a car dealership. Then you'll see yhe red building.

Good value Zurich accomodation

Basic room but had everything we needed for a long weekend in Zurich, very clean and the bathroom was great with a seperate bath and shower, Klusplatz tram terminal is 2 min walk away which is excellent and the Swiss transport system makes it easy to get in to the center, about 5 mins by tram.

Very clean and simple hotel, close to the city, great room amenities, the radiator didn't seem to have an in room control however, and you do have to pay 15 CHF to park on the streets around the area, but not really a hotel fault, overall a pleasant stay

Basic - cut to chase; also no Elevator

Would have been nice to know that this is a very basic hotel (if it qualifies for that). Wonder, if there is a definition of "hotel" and if this would mean all criteria. Had to carry my 50 lbs bag 3 floors (since no elevators).

A bit tricky to find as the sign isn't super obvious. The entry is around the side (rooms are upstairs of a pizza restaurant on the corner) and there is a machine outside the door to check in, that releases your key when you put in your relevant details. Different process but was fine in the end. Didn't really have any people contact to rate staff. The room itself was bigger than we'd expected and had a computer that could be used for internet, etc. Easy tram access. Just be aware in all ways Zurich is very expensive! Food seemed excessively priced.

Good value and convenient

Our experience was very satisfactory and I would recommend a stay. Price was reasonable in a very expensive city. Location was convenient, right on tram line, 2 mins into the heart of old town. As other reviews have said, the biggest negative is that there is no elevator and bags can be quite heavy to haul up 3 flights of stairs. Our room was very clean and a there was a book of helpful info on bed telling us everything we needed to know to get started. there was also a computer right in room, though it was often very slow and connection could be spotty. Maid service daily, small kitchenette in room. Hotel sells tram passes, SIM cards, free laundry machines in hotel, (you buy soap from desk which was 2 CDs for two loads) loaner hair dryers, free maps of town. Plenty of hot water for showers. Our room was street side, which is noisy for sleeping with windows open. Right outside our door was shelf with 4 fans, so we shut the windows at night and used fan for airflow. Nice view though. Excellent restaurant on ground floor, family friendly pizza and pasta. Serve half portions which were plenty. Prices in Zurich are quite high, so this was welcome. Staff was very helpful (except for the old guy, who seems to be there to read the paper and grunt at you) overall a great value, close to the heart of town and staff has provided guests with everything needed. Getting around on trams was easy and efficient. Just know you might have to walk up three flights of stairs with your bags.

Wonderful Zurich Apartment!

We were only here for one day but it was perfect for what we wanted. A comfortable place to sleep for the night - convienient to the train station. Easy to get around by tram. I think 6min by tram from the train station. There is a grocery store just down the street and we used the kitchenette to make dinner and food for the train for the next day! We barely saw the staff - only for check in but they were efficient and super nice when we saw them. They helped us carry the bags up the stairs. At the price you couldn't beat it anywhere! The room was sparse but had everything we needed.

Perfect for a business trip

The room was perfect and clean, looked almost brand new. The perfectly equipped kitchenette allowed us to cook for two. The spacious bathroom had a jacuzzi. Although the windows opened on the main street, the shutters allowed to block all the noise. The internet and TV were easy to access althought I'm not used to a Linux based system and an azerty keyboard. Staff was also very friendly. I will recommend it.

There is no lift so don't stay there if you have heavy luggages. The mattress needs to be replaced as it is too soft due to overuse. The small kitchen inside the room is good. There is a small supermarket within 10 minutes walk. The hotel can be easily reached by tram from central station.

SAUNA IN VIENNA

The positives:
Clean hotel, close to the tram, and nicely renovated.

The negatives:
Number one, in this day and age, the vast majority of travellers consider air conditioning to be a given. To arrive and find no air conditioning was the number one set back. We were on the 3rd floor (the 4th by north American standards) and with heat rising our only way to address the heat was to open the window.....then we had the traffic of the trams going by the hotel so now it was a double whammy.....noise and heat.

Although the cleaning staff were friendly there was one particular front office staff member who failed to remember that her purpose was to actually assist customers. This was best exemplified when we asked where we could store our luggage after checking out as our flight was not until early evening.....her immediate response was their doors would be locked so we would have to find storage downtown. Literally locking the doors during afternoon hours seems like an odd way to provide support to guests.

Regarding the restaurant that they speak so highly of......was never opened once during our stay of three days.

Bottom line, management is making a very poor business decision to think that not addressing the air conditioniong in 2012, not 1950, is a wise decision. In our three trips to Europe this was clearly the worst stay we have experienced anywhere, anytime. If you want a true sauna experience this is the place for you.......but we will never be back.

parking is an issue. if you are driving to zurich, this is not a place to stay. the room was noisy and there is no air conditioner, so we had to leave the windows open on a major busy street. the staff is ok, but not really knowledgeable about the area. No staff present between 7pm and 9am.

This is a nice, clean hotel and the service is good. When we arrived, the door was locked and there was an automatic, self-serve check-in that we used. The keys on the pad were a bit hard-to-use, but once we checked in, the key was dispensed. At other times, the desk was manned by helpful personnel. There was a computer in the room, but I was unable to access my e-mail, as I could not make the "@" or the "!" sign, despite following the posted directions for doing so. (They might want to revisit their instructions, to be sure they are correct, as written.) Aside from that, the room was very nice and the hotel is very nice.

I was very dissappointed to find that there were no curtains on the windows; only flimsy white that had one panel and tears. The room was also quite stuffy. Glad that I was there for only one night.

friendly and helpful staff!

Really pleased with our stay! Nice amenities included - free wi fi, kitchen, free washer and dryer in basement, computer with internet in room, free printing. Self- check in after 7 pm so we were glad we arrived early. Actually, we arrived at 1130 am and we were able to check in early. Highly recommend doing onr day trip to and from Zurich to top of Jungfraujoch.

Enjoyed Our Stay

The hotel was clean and well furnished, our room included a small refrigerator, stove, cookware and a computer. Bathroom was clean and modern. Parking is very limited at the actual hotel. We had to pay to park on the street about a block away which was not to big of an inconvenience for us. The neighborhood was peaceful and quiet.
