Only stay here if you want to get yelled at

Only good things about this hotel were Domeni and Katharina. Rooms were dirty (first reeked of cigarette smoke and 2nd was dirty). Night front desk manager yelled at me when I asked him to bring me the plug to the tea kettle. He actually came to the room to look for it as if I get jollies from stealing tea kettle plugs. Ridiculous!

You can not get any more central in Zurich than here.
Service was very friendly and the rooms comfortable.
Amazed how quiet the rooms were considering we were right in the middle of the Niederdorf (Old part of Zurich).

I stayed twice. I had a room in the guest house facing an inner green area which was nice. The second time, out of the hotels control, a noisy neighbour was disturbing me. Staff were very helpful in moving e to the main building for a comfortable stay and they did not add any charges. I thought that was very nice.

Due to the heatwave current during our stay the room was very hot and with no AirCon it became necessary to keep the windows open which resulted in a lot of street noise and restaurant \"aromas\" being part of our stay. The room was clean and neat, I would request to be places in a quieter room next time. Staff were courteous and helpful!

Nice, clean, affordable and well located.

We stayed in the guest house which is in a separate building with out reception or any service, but it was very clean an easy to use. It is situated right in the middle of the old town and easy to get any where. The only problem we had was with the Coffey in the morning. Since we had an early flight we were promised to have complementary Coffey from 6:30 in the morning, which we didn't get until 7:20.

Nice & spacious, neighbourhood good for nightlife.

5-7 mins walking distance from main train station. There are two properties for Alexander , one a three star hotel and another a two star guest house, both are just a block away. the price difference is not much and covers for the breakfast that you get only in the hotel. the check-in for both the properties is at the Hotel which happens to be on the happening street full of - bars, nightclubs, restaurants. We just stayed for a night (few morning hours) in the guest house. they allowed us a late check out by 1pm for free, thanks to them as we partied till early morning. the room was nice, clean and spacious. friendly and accommodating staff.

Small clean, no frills hotel

Very small room but was clean and neat for a hot shower and rest at night. Service staff certainly lived up to the standard of \"Swiss hospitality\". Most friendly service encountered on our Europe trip. Neighborhood was convenient with a supermarket (migros express) on the next street and Bryce cafes/restaurants as well. However, the street to the right became dodgy at night; not a problem though if you turn into the hotel from the opp street but was still uncomfortable when we chanced on the wrong street the first night.

Check in also took place a street away at their sister hotel with a very similar name; the signage for Alexander guesthouse was also not very prominent so locating it initially was tedious.

This is a budget option -- by Zurich standards -- a building close to and operated by Hotel Alexander, in the center of the Old Town and a five minute walk from the train station. What makes it really work well is that the staff of the parent hotel is extremely accommodating and nice.

Single Traveler--Not recommended for single travel

I am a single traveler & this was my 2nd stay in Zurich.I was getting in from Zermatt at 10pm so I decided I didnt need to have a \"good\" place, just somewhere to lay my head. I was wrong. I needed a safe place. The GH is VERY difficult to find. I asked the taxi driver to take me once I arrived. He pointed me to a landmark that I could see so I decided to walk. I then asked people (including random locals & random hotel desk peeps). They either never heard of it or said \"its close\". I walked around the block (all which were on hooker row). I was very nervous walking by myself (and I am not easliy scared).I finally found Alexander Hotel. I walked in a sweaty mess (it was 95*). The VERY NICE and controled man handled my \"mood\" well. He to checked me in & then told me that I was in fact NOT even at the guesthouse. He pointed me back to the dark alley that I needed to walk up to find the guesthouse. I told him that I was not walking outside by myself again. He was VERY calm and said, \"I will walk you\".He walked me to the front door. 2 random men sitting on the stoop. He said my room # in front of the hookers & randos. Gasp. My room was fine. It was clean, 2 pretty comfy twin beds. I was on the street side(very noisy) I was still a little unnerved.I turned on the TV & it was all in Spanish. They had over 50 stations,1 in Engligh. Good 'ol CNN. It was uber hot, but they had a fan. I took a sleeping pill and doze off.

Nice enough for a cheaper stay in crazy-expensive Zurich. The staff is super friendly. The room was fine, nothing special. Air conditioning in summer would have been a BIG improvement. The only real complaint is that when you arrive at the address, you learn from a sign on the wall that you have to walk around the block to a whole other location where they keep the reception desk. Not very fun when you are carrying luggage! Did I miss a warning about this? Anyway, not a bad hotel. Not great either.

Clean, Simple, On a budget but Good

Room was clean, simple but with all of the necessary stuff. Guest house is located one block away from the major strip of the historical area so it was excellent! Noise could be an issue on the weekends and if you are a light sleeper, but my friend had ear plugs and she was able to sleep well. We had a twin bed room that was spacious, the bathroom was not super tidy BUT it wasn't bad (I have high cleaning standards). The hotel is small but it has a lift (Elevator) so that was great. The check-in has to be done at the main hotel which is located on the major strip. The front desk lady was very nice, she speaks several languages (that was impressive :-D). The are several restaurants and shops on the main street close by. There is also a supermarket very close to the hotel. The street where the guest house is located has lots of people walking at night and it's busy with women working but we didn't feel unsafe. Also, we did not stay out too late so we didn't have a problem. Overall, the guest house is a great choice if you are looking for a clean, simple, not fancy and on the budget place to sleep.

It was a very simple & basic 2-3 star hotel, proving a place to sleep. We stayed here for one night before heading to Munich in the next morning, so it was not too bad, but we would not definitely stay for more than 1 night. Not comfortable with the amenities provided and the tiny tiny room. The hotel is located right by the Old Town, which was great. Other than that, nothing to say. Too bad. The staff at the reception was very helpful.

This was a cheaper hotel in a very expensive city. It was located very centrally near the railway station and in the old city. Room was a good size but two single beds and a very poor pillow. Had to pay for breakfast which should be included. Room was hot and noisy because the prostitutes gather in the street. No aircon made the room hot.

Overall stay was ok.

Booked to stay in guesthouse but when we arrived and we were given the key we were told (not offered) by a very unapologetic receptionist we had been 'upgraded' to a room in the hotel...sounds good...but...the room was tiny and was not soundproof as advertised...but the real kicker was according to the hotels paperwork everyone who stayed in a room in the hotel got complimentary breakfast. But we had to pay, which put a big downer on the stay. Wish we had returned the key and said we wanted the room we booked.

From walking distance to every point of interest

We appreciated the fact that it was quite and had a view of the interior garden instead of the street. The room, although small, was comfortable. The Guesthouse does not have air conditionning but we had a fan and it was not too hot at this time of year. The personnel is nice and helpfull. We had a problem with the phone and they changed it right away. The hotel is close to all restaurants, at 10 minutes from the train station in the old section of the city.

The Alexander Guesthouse is the downscale \"depandance\" of the much nicer Alexander Hotel, something which is not explained very clearly on the hotel's website. The two places share a reception, at the Hotel, and little else. The rooms have nothing in common with those depicted on the website and can be described as bare bone at best: two twin beds (comfortable), two nightstands that make ikea furniture look positively luxurious by comparison and a small desk -- my room didn't even have a closet, just a rack to hang clothes on. Fortunately chances are you won't be spending too much time in the room. The hotel could't be more centrally located (although it is in what seems to be the \"red light\" district) and the staff are friendly and helpful (but keep in mind that there is no reception on site).

Fairly priced lodging in the center of Old Town.

If you are looking for a large hotel with lotts of bells and whistles this is not the place for you. However, if you are looking for a comfortable, clean place to lay your head or do some work that is located right in the center of Zurich you should definitely consider staying at the Alexander Guesthouse. The Guesthouse is located 1 block behind the hotel. There is no front desk or security at the Guesthouse, but the front door and the room door required a key card (you need to check in and pick up a key at the Alexander Hotel, located 1 block away). The room was small, but absolutely perfect for me (female traveling alone), and had all the basics: bed, desk, hanging racks, bathroom with shower. It was clean. I will note that the Guesthouse is in the viscinity of a strip club, but there are a number of these clubs throughout Old Town, so it is not surprising (but something to keep in mind for those who rather not be close to one). The staff at the Alexander Hotel was great, very nice and accommodating. I would definitely stay here again.

Not really a problem since at a budget hotel there's no need to be at reception other than check-in/out. Room simply appointed, but clean. in the middle of things in Zurich

the hotel is in the middle of old Zurich.. so if you want absolute quiet, you may not get it. however, being jet lagged and with the help of their excellent windows, we did sleep well. the second morning, a Monday, our alarm was a drill removing cobblestone a few metres away.. but this was not the hotel's fault. people were nice, breakfast room is excellent. on our way back, we stayed there again, the room was facing the courtyard so quieter... overall a nice hotel.. pricey during weekends

On Walking Street & Close to All Sites in Old Town

Zurich is an expensive city, but Alexander Guesthouse has relatively economical non-air conditioned single rooms with en suite bathrooms in a great Old Town location. In this price range, some Zurich Old Town hotels and guesthouses have no air conditioning and shared bathrooms. No air conditioning is not a major problem, as summer days are not excessively hot and humid, but having a private bath was definitely a “must have” for me. Room rate does not include breakfast, but that is not a problem as Niederdorfstrasse is Old Town’s premier walking street and contains a plethora of cafes, bakeries, restaurants, and convenience stores within steps of Alexander Guesthouse.

Alexander Hotel is the air-conditioned and recently renovated big brother of the Alexander Guesthouse, and both have been owned for three generations by the Pfister family. A single room in the boutique Hotel runs about 20% more, which is somewhat negotiable depending on hotel occupancy. The modern rooms in both guesthouse and hotel are large by European standards and meticulously clean, with added touches like complimentary WIFI, water, fruit, and pillow chocolates. For gadget freaks, there were plenty of receptacles, and included something I’ve never seen before--an electrical strip installed alongside the desk contained female plugs for Swiss, European, Chinese, and UK 220V appliances without the need for an adaptor plug. The Guesthouse and Hotel share a staff which is friendly and helpful.

My rating may be skewed to the positive: we were lucky enough to be upgraded to the main hotel instead of the cheaper guest rooms. However, both are in an amazing location - right in the heart of Zurich. Very clean room, great view of one of the main pedestrian streets. Quiet and friendly staff.

Right in the Heart of Things

The Alexander is a short walk from the train station and convenient to all the fun of the Old Town in Zurich. We were given an upgrade from the Guesthouse to the Main Hotel. Our room was clean and comfortable. We were right among the cobblestone alleys of the Old Town and only 5 minutes walk from the shopping along Bahnhofstrasse. We'll stay at the Alexander again on our next trip.

It is a rather long walk from the train station and you need good directions to get to the Hotel. If you take a taxi, it will cost 10-12 Swiss francs. The Guesthouse is behind the main hotel and accessible through a walkway. It is near restaurant and shops on Neiderdorf Strasse, away from the expensive luxury stores on Bahnhofstrasse.

This hotel is the absolute best location for Zurich. Very close to a lot of restaurants, cafes & bars as well as good shopping stores. Being away from the glamour of Bahnhofstrasse it is a lot cheaper & the quality is still good. Being one street back from river in old town it is close to most attractions which are within easy walking distances.

Weekend Breaks

We arrived late on a Saturday evening. The surrounding area was very busy as there are many bars and restaurants in the immediate vicinity of the hotel. Hence, it is in a very convenient location for both entertainment and tourist sights. This however means that it is rather noisy when you want to sleep. There is no air conditioning so you have to have the window open for air. Also, there are only net curtains so all the surrounding buildings have a clear view into the room. The room was very bare and rather bleak. We had a non-smoking room which smelt as if a chain-smoker had lived there for at least a decade but otherwise, it was clean and sufficient as a rest stop and we were only there to sleep.

Cheap hotel, with hookers by the front door

This is not really a hotel, it's look like an apartment owned by \"Hotel Alexander\" which is one block away, you have to check-in and out at Hotel Alexander, this place has no front desk. If you need help at night time, tough luck! Hookers lined up by the front door at night time.The room has a chair, a bed, a desk, a phone, no air cond, not even hair dryer. we can not open the window, because it's too noisy! I would like to suggest Hotel.com to take off this place from the listing.

Please DO NOT choose this place.. as its just above a red light prostitution area!! Its a nightmare when you need a peaceful sleep.. after a long day of traveling.

The hotel has just been refurnished. Everything was new and in very good condition. The hotel also provided free wifi with very advanced system in generating username and password.
The hotel staff were also very friendly with very good English.

Truly an Experience

I understand that Zurich is expensive, but to charge what they did for the \"guest house\" experience was dreadful. We entered the lobby of the hotel which looked great, but then we were escorted down a side street to the Guest House. The hallway smelled, the elevator was too tiny so all our luggage couldn't fit in one trip (only 2 of us), and the room was facing a street where hookers hang out looking for business. When 2 hookers get in a fight, well let me just say ii was a noisey experience even with the windows closed. Don't book here if they tell you you're staying \"The Guest House\". I won't even mention the alligator bathroom because you won't believe me.

Nice place with interesting smell

The service is very nice but the price is not correlated to the room quality. It is more like a sterile room of a prison than a hotel room (guest house). And it smells awfully because the Raclette house is in the same building and if you open the window the smell of cheese is very very intense!

More than we expected

The location was great for us and with a price way lower than most other hotels we checked I must confess that we didn't expect very much. However the room was nice, clean, and had everything we needed. They even gave us breakfast though it wasn't included in the original price, probably because the large hotel they have were undergoing renovations and even though that didn't bother us at all I think they felt the need to compensate a bit.

Staff was extremely helpful in getting our room ready early which was really appreciated as we were travelling with our 8 month old daughter. Everyone was so nice and accommodating. Nice, clean room. We could really have used a fridge to store baby food and an aircondition unit as the room got very hot during the day. Otherwise, absolutely no complaints

Receiption is at the next street but not easy to carry the carrier.
Also there are many stores and restaurants at the receiption street,
But the geust house is located to the next street but it was dark and not many people, only women seems looking for man
