This hotel was outdated and had stains around the walls, shower curtains, and other small areas. As far as I could tell the bed was clean but the room and restroom in particular had a bad stench. I think I “what I paid for” but in the future I’d rather pay a few extra dollars for something a bit nicer. On a positive note it wasn’t to far from train stations

The staff were always very friendly towards us. Most speak English or understand English. Just keep in mind, it is hotel policy to return your key every day you leave and you’ll get it back when you return. Plenty of shopping in the area, family mart and 7/11 are within 1 block of the hotel, domino’s is next door, and Ikebukuro station is a 5-8 minute walk from the door. Highly recommend this property for anyone seeking a comfortable place that’s easily accessible to the greater Tokyo area. (The rooms are small and the bathrooms are tiny, other than that, there’s absolutely no complaints)

The room was clean due to daily maid service however the building is incredibly old and needs an update. I did find a bed bug in the lobby. The nearest train station was a bit of a walk by Tokyo standards. The area was dirty and shady. The experince was fine but there are better choices in Tokyo.

The Stay
Hotel New Star Ikebukuro is located conveniently near Ikebukuro station (5-10 minute walk, depending where you exit). I guess this is what you call the typical business hotel for business travelers. It has most if not all the essential you'll need for the stay. But is not a fancy like some of the big name hotel, but is not bad. The place is old, but they keep it fairly clean (to Japan standard), compare to some motel and hotel. Don't expect a nice view or nice lighting, but is a decent place to stay if you don't want to share rooms.

The Miscellaneous
The hotel is located in a good location with different various shop, restaurants, and other amenities nearby (I mean it is in Tokyo). They are conveniently walkable. Sunshine City is also a walkable distance as well. The staff seem sincere and try to explain the process to travelers. They mention you should leave the key with them before you leave to explore so they can clean the room when you are out. All in the all, it is not an upscale place, but is a decent place if you are looking for something not super expensive to stay the night.

I booked it, arrived and inspected before checking in. Not what I expected. Got bad attitude from front desk clerk as an introduction, because given the look of the lobby I requested to see the room before committing fully to stay. Even though he reluctantly gave permission to inspect the room. I opted not to stay. Property needs a total remodel upgrade. Looks dated and wasn’t clean, but most importantly staff needs to learn the meaning of hospitality. Location is great but too bad they sucked!

The hotel was easily accessible from the JR Ikebukuro station. Surrounds was ok, convenience stores around! The room was a bit small but liveable. The condition of the room was not the best… moldy walls and a bit warm unless you open the window. Otherwise it was pretty ok. Good service and daily housekeeping.

This hotel was roughly a 5 minute walk from the JR Ikebukuro station if you're not carrying any luggage. Unfortunately, none of the exits have elevators, so if you're bringing a lot of luggage with you, the walk between the station to this hotel will take longer. The room I stayed in was very basic and very small, which is typical of a business hotel room in Tokyo. Staff were very friendly and helpful. This hotel does have a washer and dryer located outside of the building and they cost 100 yen each to run. You do need to leave the key at the front desk whenever you leave the building, but there was always someone at the desk whenever I exited and entered the building.

There are also a lot of convenience stores and dining options within a block from the hotel!

Firstly the hotel is in a good location in Ikebukuro. Unfortunately that’s the only positive.

Rooms are very run down with marks & dents & stains all over the walls. Really needs to be patched & painted.

My TV & wifi didn’t work. It took a number of calls & visits to the front desk to get it sorted.

Rooms are the standard small business style you find in Tokyo.

While I good price I think you can find a much better & better condition hotel to stay at for a few more dollars

Pros: The hotel was very clean and the staff had decent English language skills and were super polite, diligent, helpful, etc.

Cons: The room was tiny, even by Tokyo hotel standards. I'm just barely under 6 ft tall (1.83 m) and in shoes, my head almost scraped the door frames and I hurt myself getting from bed to bathroom more than once. Also, inside the bathroom would have felt an airplane restroom if not for the shower. The hotel is in a terrible location- A hike from the nearest train station and just outside of a fairly sketchy part of Ikebukero where it's easy to get turned around and lost if you don't know the area. There are some useful restaurants and stores nearby but the neighboorhood also has also quite a few love hotels and girl bars and everything that comes with that. Also, the hotel listed massage among the amenities but when I got there, there was just a small placard ad for an outcall massage service placed next to the bed. Given the nature of the neighborhood, I did not partake.

The staff that is hotel was so nice even if we couldn’t communicate in English. The location is .3 miles from Ikebukuro West Station. (About 4 & 1/2 bloocks) the only problem was the washer didn’t drain and I had to dry the clothes for a very long time. This hotel is very close to 7/11 and many eating places.

Everything was wonderful, my only complaint is that it gets cold in the winter, which is natural for more traditional style Japanese hotels, and that the bed and pillow aren't quite up to the \"European/American\" standard, but again, it is a bed and not a futon, so I am happy! Would stay again.

Cosy hotel close to everything

The price for this hotel is well worth it. Have stayed here twice as a couple and even though the semi double bed might look small, it really is quite cosy and comfortable. The bathroom is always well-stocked and clean, although only one person can fit in it at any one time.

The hotel is located close to late night eating spots, shopping malls and Ikebukuro station which is along the Yamanote line. Super convenient! There are also lots of convenient stores located close to the hotel, the closest being Lawson which is just next to the hotel's lobby.

Hotel staffs are really efficient and friendly. Checking in and out are a breeze. They have a small cafeteria at the lobby which some guests have mentioned have a pretty good breakfast (not complimentary, though), but we haven't had the chance to try it since there are so many options close by.

All in all, a very nice little hotel for those who want to have the comforts of one at a reasonable, affordable rate. Have already booked my flight back in July at the same hotel so it is that good! Haha.

Nice place for the money. I'd definitely stay here again. Just a good basic hotel to stay at. Biggest issue is the shortest route from the station is through a small red-light district which although not dangerous can get annoying at night - but I'm sure that's why the price is good. Also, I couldn't figure out how to cool the room so i just opened the window - however this seems to be a problem at almost all the Japanese hotels I've stayed at. And the bidet was broken - not a deal-breaker but I had to use TP like in the US.

With a limited budget, the hotel is good. Not over HKD 400 per night before tax. It is quite easy to find and convenient that just a few minutes from the station.
The restroom is clean. But the room is quite dark.
The way to the hotel has quite a number of nightclubs. The staff outside were male who dressed suits. They are nice and would not disturb others. It is quite safe in a way that there is quite a number of people on the street.

We needed a bed for three days prior to a cruise and found this excellent for our purpose. Smelled smokey as we are non smokers but window opened for fresh air. A young receptionist was exceptionally helpful as we know no Japanese and directions he wrote for us were spot on. Good job!!

Not a good value place to stay in...

it is situated from the railway station around 15min walk, there is several convenient shops nearby, which is nice.

But we were disappointed with the stay here. We booked a non-smoking room, but the room we stayed with some smell in it. The facility and decoration is kinda old, the lighting is dim in the room, the bedsheet turned gery..., which make us feel uncomfortable.

Well, for the same price, we expect a better room..

Stayed here for one night and was reasonably happy with this choice--good price for the location (5 minute walk from Ikebukuro exit C6), relatively clean, and quiet. Only issues were the room temperature was in general a bit too hot and a bit cramped by the door given I had a large suitcase. Also, I'm not sure if it's normal but I had a friend come up to visit the room to eat a bento dinner and was told I would be charged 2000 yen for them to spend more than about 1 hour in the room. I would stay here again for the location and reasonable price but might consider other options nearby next time. One other note is that the staff seems to speak very little English but probably enough to get by if you don't know any Japanese.

Good for a first night in Tokyo

Like many places in Tokyo I found it difficult to locate anything after leaving the metro station but managed to find this hotel quite by chance. The service was good, the Japanese breakfast excellent (rated by a Westerner at least) and the hotel very comfortable and situated close to the Ikebukuro railway station, which is virtually a self-contained city in itself! By Tokyo standards it is also reasonably priced.

Cheap and cheerful, but great value

The standard of room cleaning was very high, although the method employed did take quite some time. The reception staff were helpful and friendly. The location was very good, with nearby access to the JR station at Ikebukuro. There were lots of local 24 hour shops, so there was no danger of going hungry or running out of beer! Yes, the hotel could do with a facelift but that's nit-picking....you get what you pay for and this was very affordable. Free wi-fi was very useful (but try not to be in a room too far away from the router - the signal in my room was quite weak). The air conditioning struggled a bit but just about coped when left on at full tilt. I would certainly stay again at the New Star again, mainly down to the excellent standard of service that the staff provided.

I did not enjoy my stay. I requested a non-smoking room but the room and the whole place, except the front desk area, reeked of cigarette smoke. Although there was an air conditioner, it seemed to bring in cigarette smoke air too. The front desk staff were nice though. The location was okay and allowed me to do some sightseeing at Sunshine City. If you are a non-smoker or sensitive to the cigarette smell, then I do not recommend this place. I will not go back there.

Reasonable for students on a budget

A short walk from Ikebukuro Station, the hotel is on a main road & is easy to find despite only having a small sign outdoors. The front desk is staffed 24h, which is useful since you leave your key with them when leaving. There are no laundry services but there is a 24h coin laundry a few minutes up the street. There are also countless convenience stores within a five minute walk for all your snacking needs - as a vegetarian with very poor Japanese language skills I found it difficult to eat in restaurants, but there was plenty of delicious, cheap and surprisingly hearty food at the 7-11s, Lawsons, and FamilyMarts in the area.

My room was a standard single - as expected, there was very little space in the room not occupied by the bed or desk. They provide fresh towels, bathmats, robes and toothbrush/toothpaste/sachets of green tea each day and collect the used towels/robes as well as your trash. Since I keep odd hours (sleeping through the morning, staying up late) I took to leaving the bag and towels outside my door and they were collected while I slept. They leave the fresh ones in a bag by the door if you are not in/awake. The room is not very well lit but it's not horribly dark either. There are four electrical outlets - three on the desk and one on the bed. The control panel on the bed also allows you to control the AC and some of the lights. The room has a fridge and a hotplate with a small kettle you can use to heat up water for tea, soup, and cup noodle.

Small rooms, even for Tokyo. The hotel is in need of an over all face lift. Breakfast in the hotel restaurant is well worth the 520 yen. There is easy access to a variety of food joints, and convenience stores. Ikebukuro station and malls are about a 5 minute walk from the hotel.

Très bon hébergement. Le personnels est sympathique et attentioné.
La chambre était très bien équipés, très propre et tout fonctionnait correctement.
Le seul petit bémol c'est qu'il n'y ait pas une petite étagère pour ranger les affaires. Mais à part ça tout était très bien.

L'hôtel est très très bien

エアコンはつければ結構きいてました。
姿鏡はあるけど、お化粧する為の机のところに鏡が無い。電気が暗め。
