Great location in centre of York, walking distance to shops, bars, restaurants and the Barbican centre.
Room itself was dated, no central heating, just two small stand-alone heaters (which did heat the room) and small bathroom with shower. Tea and coffee facilities were a nice touch.

It’s ok and what you expect for the price in the city centre. The rooms are very dated but clean. The noise from the bars surrounding is loud as the old windows don’t really block much noise. Staff were extremely friendly and helpful. If you’re on a budget and just need a basic room for 1 night this place will do.

Good location but as it's attached to the pub it was noisy at night from people plus could hear noise from upstairs/next door.
Room was sufficient for one night. Pillows were a little on the soft side. Bathroom compact, shower good.
Can get discount on breakfast as staying there.
All staff that I interacted with were very nice and helpful, could leave luggage to collect later.
It was very close to shops and restaurants.

Rooms were musty, mold in the showers, hair all over the sinks. Carpet staples sticking up out of the carpet where my husband cut his foot walking in. Wouldn't even have stayed one night if we had the choice but there was no where else to stay in York as everything was fully booked. So we ended up sleeping with all our clothes on and a hood up.

The only good thing about this property is the one employee they have working for them who was polite and kind. Gave poor service for Staff & Service as when we tried to deal with the manager they just ignored our concerns.

We booked the accommodation last minute during York Food Festival, so availabilty was limited to the small double room. Small is an understatement. The bedroom was pretty grim with no opening windows, a small oscillating fan and a metal rack for clothing. There was a tiny, unnoticeable step into the bathroom, perfect for toe stubbing and the shower screen surround was pitted.
That said, the breakfast and coffee was good and the staff were lovely. We glanced into other rooms which looked perfectly okay, so maybe we were unlucky with our choice.

The staff are exceptional! They are very friendly, helpful and go above and beyond for you. We couldn’t have asked for better. The breakfast in the pub below was good. When we needed ice for our sodas in our room they happily gave it to us. We were even allowed to check in early with no problems. High marks to the staff!! It’s in a wonderful and central location! Super close walk to the sites of York! The rooms are very dirty and in need of DEEP cleaning; new furniture and a complete overhaul. If they’d clean the rooms it would be a great place to stay. Again, amazing location and some of the best staff I’ve ever encountered!

Check-in was straightforward, and the room was clean and functional with basic amenities like coffee-making facilities and a warm shower.

However, our stay was seriously disrupted by loud drilling and hammering starting around 08:15 right outside our window. The noise was so loud and went on for a couple of hours, making it impossible to get a restful lie-in. It’s likely this work has been going on for weeks before our stay, yet the hotel gave no warning or apology.

This feels like a failure on the hotel’s part — guests should be informed about ongoing construction or work, especially if it affects their comfort so dramatically. A restful stay was completely ruined, and for that reason, I can only give 2/5.

While the room was a bit small, the location was great. You can walk to almost any of the many old-town attractions. There is a decent restaurant/bar below the hotel. The staff was all very friendly. And, as a bonus, there is free secure parking on the lot just behind the hotel (you enter through a gate that goes under the 2nd floor). It's a bit loud until 11:00 (on the weekend) and then very quiet afterward. Despite the crowded room, we loved it and would go back.

This is the first time I was disappointed with a hotel booked through Expedia. From the very start, I should’ve been advised to take a cab from the train station to the Watergate Inn since there are crowds of people on narrow streets and uneven sidewalks. Traipsing through York with luggage and a bag was not pleasant. The room was junky looking. One of the chairs was dirty and soiled. The other chair was from their outside patio. Could NOT take a shower. Once I turned on the water, it started filling up in the base of the shower stall. Also saw mold in shower. Glad I only booked one night there.

Loads of parking, nice bar, good food. The room showed its age but it's an old building so that's only to be expected. It really couldn't be better located. Make sure you have a GPS to find the place, though as the streets are what you'd expect in a 2000+ year old city. Would definitely stay here again.

We stayed a lot of places on our trip around the UK and Ireland, and even though this hotel wasn't the nicest, it was one of our favorites! Our room was small and bathroom had seen better days, but we loved staying here! It is above a pub/restaurant, so food and drinks were convenient. Staff was lovely and fish and chips were amazing! Lots of shops and restaurants around and an easy walk over to the Shambles! Thank you for the awesome stay, Watergate Inn! :D

We stayed for 1 night as a halfway stop en route, the staff were extremely helpful and polite. Unfortunately the facilities in the room were lacking, the bed was very low and the tiny shower door didnt open fully i had requested a low floor room because i have mobility issues at the moment, but was placed up a flight of stairs. They need to make it absolutely clear on their website that they are not suitable for anyone with mobility problems. The food was really good as was the beer.

We chose this property for it's location, right in the old part of York, which as fantastic. The room itself was noisy, over crowded with a few broken items. The sheets didn't fit the bed properly and kept coming off in the night making it quite uncomfortable.

There is really not anything positive I can say. The bed was terrible! Thin, bad quality mattress, thin lousy pillows. Noisy outside the window from the pub downstairs until after 1AM Door lock was hard to use, we almost locked ourselves in. Mold in the shower. Just don't do it! The room I stayed in was fab for the night, with a double, TV, kettle with tea & coffee.

A bathroom with shower.

The room was safe & secure & a 3 minute walk from the main town centre.

Staff were very nice. Accomodations did not match the pictures. Room was painfully small. There was no place to open luggage. Full bed took up most of the room. No lighting by bedside, only one light overhead. Shower head sprayed water outside of shower and drain was so slow that overflow threatened to spill over onto floor. Only one outlet available and teapot needed to sit on floor to plug in because of length of cord. Mattress very thin futon. We were miserable.

The staff here was so nice! It isn't in the most scenic part of the city, but it was safe enough and the property was fine. There is a lovely deck outside overlooking a canal. If you are looking for a good deal that is a short walk from the more historic areas, this is a good choice.

This property is a simple room above a small pub. There was no landline phone. The bathroom had no shelves or hooks which was an issue because the shower overflowed onto the floor, soaking anything placed in the bathroom. The shower did not drain well, so the basin quickly filled and leaked out onto the floor.
It smelled like strong mildew.
There is no AC so we had a fan going and the window open at night. The street was very noisy below.
I tried to contact the management with some questions, but they did not respond to email and I did not get through on the phone.
With that being said, the price was good and the location fantastic. We had an easy walk to the sights in York. The people working in the pub below were very kind and helpful and the breakfast we had there was delicious.
Overall, we had a nice time, I just want people to have a good understanding of the property before choosing it.

A terrible experience in beautiful York

Awful awful awful - asked to park and was told we couldn't, later found out it was supposed to free and so lost £20, room was small, uncomfortable and then no hot water, and spent all night being kept up by what I can only describe as the local crack den. Avoid this at all costs if staying in York - we love the place but will never be coming back here, and personally feel we should be refunded in full.

The Watergate Inn is rooms above a pub.
Excellently located in the centre of York, a close walk to anything in the city centre.
The rooms are dated, however this is perfect example of getting what you pay for. It is much cheaper than other options in a similar location, and this is because it is a little worn and in need of some TLC.
That being said, I slept well in a comfy bed with great heating so was nice and warm.
The WiFi is not good and the pillows need replacing, but it was absolutely fine.
It can be noisy, but in a city centre that should be expected.
It is basic, but I would stay here again and did enjoy the experience.

Room#2: The shower was dirty and moldy. The water in the shower would not drain. There was hair in the sink drain. The toilet would not flush properly. One of the beds broke while my husband was putting my 3 year old to sleep. We told the staff on the first night and it didn’t get fixed on our stay.

Perfect location for exploring York with free parking included. The staff were lovely, with a warm welcome and farewell.
The room was equipped with a hairdryer and complimentary toiletries, which we hadn't expected. The proximity of the room to the road, and being above the bar meant it was noisy, but we were prepared for that. The owners obviously have an issue with drainage with it being such an old building, but we didn't see any issues with that other than having to stop the shower for a while to let the water drain away.
Another table lamp in the bedroom, and a shelf in the bathroom were my only thoughts on improvements.
The room was quite expensive, but that just seems to be the price situation for York in general.

A great place to stay!

I have stayed here a few times over the years and have always been happy with this hotel. The beds were comfortable, and the toilet and shower were clean, with plenty of hot water. The room I stayed in, (5), was above the main gate which meant it could be a bit noisy early in the morning, but not too serious. Staying above a bar, can be a bit noisy, but that is only to be expected. The room was very warm, I had to turn the radiator down, not a bad thing. The hotel is situated five minutes walk from the shambles with plenty of bars and traditional pubs. I recommend the Blue Bell, two minutes away, and The Golden Fleece for it's ghosts and entertainment. All in all a very pleasurable stay. I look forward to returning soon.

Check in was fine with friendly staff. Room was very small and basic. The bed was so uncomfortable and hard. We had an upstairs room which backed onto the shisha bar, it was noisy until about 1am but then it did go quiet. I wouldn’t return here even though the one thing it had going for it was the location,

My room was just above the outdoor garden at the back.It was very noisy at night and trying to get to sleep was very very difficult. I would not think about staying there again. The reason i booked was the price but next time i will pay a little bit extra to stay somewhere else that is a lot quieter. I would not recommend anybody to stay here.

While the property was relatively clean etc, and the location very central. The location meant the room was very noisy (particularly with garbage collection of bottles at 5am outside the window). We also had a problem with the hot water not working on our second morning and it wasn't able to be fixed for hours so had to have cold showers.

The other area we were disappointed with was communication. We tried to call and email to make amendments to our booking before arrival and couldn't get through. Then after check out we realised we had left an item of jewellery in the room but even though we emailed and called multiple times we were unable to get anyone to answer, and left multiple messages.

Basic - needs a lot of work done

We travelled as a family on Friday to see a show. Firstly the positives - good city centre location and the staff are friendly and a big family.
The drawbacks - whilst clean, the furniture is cheap and tatty. The decor is from the 70's at least. For £160, no breakfast included. The towels, 1 per person - were more like hand towels.
We asked for an iron and ironing board and whilst an ironing board was located, there was no iron. On trying the hairdryer in the morning, it made a grinding sound and gave off a burning smell.
We talked to a taxi driver on the way back to the station who said the owner has lots of other businesses and shops so clearly doing up the property won't be a priority.

Great location, GREAT. Very clean room. Check-in young lady(s) were very helpful. Pub staff and all staff were wonderful. Parking was about 2 blocks away in a multi-level public garage, not a big issue. Good WiFi. good hot water. Quiet room in rear. Walkable to all important city sites. Great micro-brewery a few doors down and great historic pub across the street. The room was VERY tiny, I believe a jail cell is most likely larger. Could use more electrical outlets. Very convenient location for the city centre and easy to find. Pre-arrival communication was good and late/self check in available. Rooms are simply and adequately equipped. Kettle in room with tea and coffee. Bed comfortable and storage space to hang clothes. Room was impeccably clean. I was really impressed by the excellent level of cleanliness of the room and bathroom. Only thing is that noise does travel through the walls, and the rooms are over a pub. I could hear noise from outside until after midnight, so maybe not a place for light sleepers.

About a half-hour walk from the railway station, in quite a nice little community area, away from the main tourist areas, the Watergate is a pub with rooms. It serves meals, but not, as yet, breakfast. The check-in details are incorrect – the mobile phone number belongs to the previous owner – but I gather this is being addressed. Pleasant staff. The room was dated, but all right nonetheless, except for the street noise from passing revellers which went on intermittently until about 4am causing me to have very broken sleep each night. Near the Red Lion – an excellent pub if you like good beer.

The hotel is located across from a shisa lounge which had people partying on a Monday night until 1am. I could hear every word of their conversation. I was on the ground floor and the stairs to the upper rooms were some of the loudest stairs I have heard. I was awoken multiple times during the night by people coming and going.

My room was also situated below a bathroom, and at approximately 7am I could hear someone on the toilet and then in the shower, almost as if I was in the room with them.

The blinds that covered the window in the room could also not be closed further, thus light from the shisha bar across the road was brightening the whole room, as well as the sun as it rose in the morning.

On to cleanliness, the miniature cushions on the bed had white stains on them. The mugs provided were filled with black debris and the base of the shower was similar. There was an excess of dust around the sink, which I noticed as I dropped my toothbrush as was met with a jungle of our grey delight.

Overall I would not recommend this hotel.

Brilliant. Arrived and checked in within 5 minutes, rooms were good size, clean and have everything you need. Location was excellent!!! Staff very friendly and my puppy stayed for free! I will be staying here again

The Worst hotel we have ever seen . We didn’t stay we went elsewhere. No window , No bedding just a waterproof mattress wit a sheet and a mattress cover . No fit for purpose. Worse than an Eastern agricultural hostel . Spare toilet rolls were pat used ones at end of hallway . Hotels. Com wanted to give a Full refund but could only offer a partial one in full and final settlement. If we aren’t fully refunded by credit card company who are currently investigating then this will be going to small claims court for full compensation plus claim for stress . Allegedly a refurbished superior room .No breakfast as booked as Kitchen had been closed down.
Don’t stay here not fit for purpose

On arrival I was greeted warmly by the new manager who was very friendly, helpful and welcoming.
The first room I was shown was an upstairs double. After only a few minutes I knew this was not the room for me: It was very cramped, dated, required decoration and had lots of trailing multiple sockets and wires. As a solo female traveler I didn’t feel it was up to standard and I didn’t feel comfortable or safe.
On returning downstairs to the bar area to explain, the manager could not have been more pleasant or helpful. She explained they had only just taken over the business that week and recognised its faults. She placed me in a really pleasant downstairs room just off the courtyard which was much better, more spacious and had been recently decorated. This room was good value for money as an upgrade (a double bed and a single with en-suite). I stayed two nights and was able to come and go as I pleased. The on site parking was a huge bonus! The premises are right in the heart of York so no need to use the car at all! Room service was available daily but I didn’t need it.
The new owners have many improvement plans for this property eg redecorating, food to be offered, redeveloping of the courtyard, holiday huts and pizza restaurant.
I would stay again in the room I was upgraded to - This venue will be great if the new owners carry out their plans … Definitely one to keep an eye on!

Would definitely stay again!

Lovely contained room with a double and 3 singles, perfect for our family.
Kettle and plenty of teabags.
Ensuite toilet and shower, clean towels and fresh bedding.
Easy to access, the staff were really helpful and friendly, location was perfect for exploring York and plenty of food locations nearby.
Nice view of the street from the window too, a little noisy but its the city so thats expected.

No complaints, its a room with a comfortable bed, if the stay was any longer it might have been a bit small but for a one night stay it was good, noisy staircase in the morning but we were up anyway.
