The hotel was very comfortable and in a convenient part of the city, within a short walk to the centre. Shops and bars nearby. We managed to park nearby. Bear in mind that the bar closes at 11:00 pm so if you are looking for a late evening drink, make sure you order early.

Very clean and comfortable room! The one thing that sucked as they had the windows open when we arrived (in February!) and our room was FREEZING and it took quite a while to get it warm. There were great bathroom amenities, although the shower conditioner was actually just more soap when I put it in my hair. I thought I had breakfast included when I booked but was told I did not so we didn't try the breakfast as we found it quite a high price (almost 17 GBP, which is about $35 per person). The staff were not the most helpful, kind of didn't give much direction and when we called about extra pillows (there was specifically a card in the room saying we had pillow options) we were ignored the first time, called 30 minutes later and told there weren't really options and he just brought us 2 more. The location is pretty walkable to York's main sites and there's enough room to pull a car up for loading/unloading.

The girl on reception could not of done more to accommodate our request for a room on a lower floor. Even double checking that I was ok to be on the third (I have a fear of lifts and am asmatic, so this was really appreciated) it meant I could use the stairs if I could not use the lift, thank you

The room was not ready until 15:45 despite a 15:00 check in.
The window in the room was open and would not close. The room was freezing. A maintenance person came to fix it so had drill and tools in our room whilst we waited. The wardrobe door fell off completely when opened, which could have resulted in injury. The door to the room was filthy. This was not an enjoyable stay. A complaint has been lodged.

Check in team were welcoming. However the room was really noisy - there were air conditioner type fans directly outside the window which droned all night very loudly. Pillows were very hard. Hash browns were excellent, coffee however was not good. Really disappointed by nights sleep.

I had a twin bed room where the beds were close together it was more like a double bed.
Apart from the room being clean there was coat hooks above full lenth mirror. having a small single wardrobe for 2 people ended up not having hardly any room to move around.

The bed was very uncomfortable, two single beds put together and not joined properly so there was a giant ridge in the middle. I asked for 4 pillows at reception, explaining that I needed to sleep propped up. I was only given three, which I find hard to believe given the size of the hotel. The thermostat seemed to have a mind of its own so it was boiling hot one minute and freezing cold the next. You couldn’t even open the window a crack to let some air in. The staff seemed indifferent to our requests and our feedback. We wouldn’t stay at this particular Holiday Inn again.

Reading negative reviews prior to our stay left us feeling like we had possibly made the wrong choice.
From the minute we arrived, our experience could not have been better. Staff were very polite and friendly. Room was clean and had everything we needed. Wifi was excellent. Beds comfy, (more pillows would be good, but I’m sure they would be available if requested.

Breakfast was excellent, very tasty and good quality, staff again polite and helpful.

Location is perfect for exploring everything York has to offer.

Long term parking available just behind the hotel, but numbers are limited, had to wait 10-15 minutes for someone to leave before we could park. That is the only downside to the hotel.

The room is too small and congested for a family. No place to move around in the room. Break fast was all over the place. Parking is away from hotel and not guaranteed. I forgot my sweater in the room and the staff did not find it in the room surprisingly. It was a memorable gift, the staff could have been more professional.

Tv remote did not work and no toilet rolls in room on arrival and remedied eventually after chasing. Breakfast food lowest quality available and we went to McDonalds the second morning! Bar had run out of bottled beer, gin and Baileys and no room service. Very poor and not worth HALF the cost! Go somewhere else if possible.

Was ok. No shower pressure and hot water took ages to come on. No duvet and pillow for my son who was using a sofa bed. Had to donate my extra pillow which would have been used to support my pregnant belly. The duvets provide were already folded in the sofa bed contained a stain.

The location, just a short walk to central York and the Barbican Theatre. Inside the hotel reception area had plenty of seating and a nice relaxed atmosphere. My room was comfortable and also had a lovely walk-in shower.

Great hotel, but breakfast service was very poor.

Very clean room and facilities. Breakfast was not very good, whilst the food was great, the service was awful. Not enough staff to cope with the guests. Continually running out of food, cups, sauces, tea bags etc etc, and tables that needed cleaning were stacking up as guests were pouring in.

Booked this last minute to attend a job interview the next day as it allowed for late check in on a Sunday night as using public transport. Staff very friendly and welcoming. Great local area knowledge. Very clean room-people above me the first night were noisy but I could sleep. Amazing bathroom-loved the shower. So close to the centre of York so I could come back post interview and explore very easily into the city to see the Minstry and visit the Shambles. Would come back again

The room was fine, nothing at all wrong with it. Breakfast service was woeful. Breakfast is self serve buffet but you ask for certain items like poached eggs or well done (crispy) bacon. Sat down, got a few bits ourself and asked for poached eggs for the wife and I. She also wanted crispy bacon as the stuff in self serve was limp and greasy.

20 minutes later, the server walked past our table with what looked to be our eggs and bacon, giving it to a couple who just sat down - it was gratefully received by them. I pointed out the mistake, and was told there was no mistake, ours would be a few minutes. 10 minutes later we enquired again, to be told \"a few minutes\". 45 mins after the original ask, my wife got her eggs, and I asked when mine would come, and the wife's crispy bacon, I was told \"a few minutes\". 5 mins later my eggs came, but no bacon for the wife. We asked again and 10 mins later, some limp bacon that looked less well cooked than the bacon you collect yourself arrived. We politely said the bacon wasn't crispy and she went away again. We complained to the manager (along with 3 other couples who'd had similar experiences), and got promised remedial bacon. The replacement arrived 1 hours and 20 minutes, again it was limp and undercooked. We got up and left at that point after pointing out again that the bacon was barely cooked. Also no beans at buffet for 25mins we were there,

We don't complain unless service is woeful - the breakfast area wasn't even busy.

Short break in York

We walked from the train station, as we had minimal luggage and it took only twenty minutes to arrive at the hotel. Check in was easy. Staff were very helpful and friendly, especially in the dining area. Daily breakfast was plentiful and tasty.The rooms were very comfortable and clean. The location of the hotel was close to all of the many attractions that York has to offer. The area was fairly quiet in the evening, even though a Wetherspoons pub was opposite. Would definitely visit again!

The staff were lovely and very helpful, convenient location for the city's many attractions. The bed in the double room was a touch on the small side and my wife and I are quite small physically.
I didn't like having to provide a £30 security deposit when I arrived, especially as I had prepaid for the room and breakfast. I have never been asked for a security deposit at any other hotel I have stayed at.

Disappointing stay

Quick and helpful staff greeted us on arrival. Got to our room and we noticed that there was a strong BO like smell the bathroom.
On investigation we could see that the bottom of the shower curtain was mouldy.
We informed the staff on the desk and they told us that they would sent up someone from house keeping. Nobody came to our room. We ended up taking the shower curtain down and leaving in the corridor outside our room. The smell reduced slightly but still persisted so we thought that the smell was coming from the drains……
Oh, and the bed was not suitable for two average size adults unless you like playing sardines

Comfortable enough, but our bathroom had a pretty severe leakage problem coming from beneath the (fully enclosed) cabinet. It looked as if they tried to repair it, but that was unsuccessful. Since the hotel was very full, we decided not to ask for a different room. Instead we threw a towel over the puddle, and carried on with our visit to lovely York!

Dreadful visit paid £500 for a room that would normally cost £110 per night. This was because the York University day had pushed up rates - that’s ok it’s commerce. I don’t think the staff got the message because they certainly delivered nothing more for the extra charge. They shut the bar at 10 and turned off the lights. The provided only 3 towels for a party of 4. They delivered the extra towel an hour later than they said. They forgot to service our room meaning we had zero towels. They advertised parking as a hotel amenity there is no parking. The local public car park was full. There was no liquid soap in the bathroom dispenser. Even at £110 you would expect them to get the basics right for £500 they need to do so so much better. As a result of this weekend we will be visiting York much more often but I will not be returning to this hotel.

Check in took far too long as your system was apparently running slow. The bar was manned by reception staff which may have been the cause for delay. Waiting time at the bar, service slow. Out room was on the 2nd floor & very noisy due to drunk women in the adjacent room. Soap dispenser pumps not working, it took 5 minutes to get a decent amount out. TV set to Babestation every time we put the TV on changed channel. Breakfast was good, staff efficient. We arrived early so we were OK but there was no seating at 9.30am. We have been returning customer to Holiday Inn but its time for a change.

Overall good, however we didn't like the policy where GBP 30 deposit was collected from us at the time of check in. We had prepaid for the room and nowhere in the app was this mentioned. If Hotels start this practice I think it will leave a bad impression overall. If the hotel is worried about something, charging all customers 30 GBP at checkin as a contingency is not the answer.
They need to look at what other policies or other measures that can be taken instead of inconveniencing all customers.
Otherwise service was good, room was also nice however the double bed felt a bit small.

Stayed with my husband for the night. Warm welcome upon arrival and easy check in. Bedroom was nice and quiet and up high as requested which was great. Room was warm through the night but air con worked well. Bar staff need to be better trained as I requested a Bacardi and coke and it was server in a pint glass!
Breakfast £16 pp so didn’t eat here.
Always stay in this area of york as close to centre. We used Q parking at the Barbican and it worked out at £14 for 24 hours and was only a 5 minute walk.

Had a lovely mini break at this hotel. Very clean and in an ideal location for walking to the city centre. Enjoyed our stay and parked locally. I am returning soon with my mum. One star chalked off as I expected our room to be cleaned and made up. One of the sheets had seen better days, had a tear in it. I won't be using the bar again, far too expensive! Those was my only grumbles but not put me off my return stay.
