The room is outdated, grubby carpet, creaky floors, you can hear everyone walking above and below you. The noise outside keeps everyone from sleeping. No double glazing. The toilet didnt flush, you had to wait for water to fill up - which took ages.
The location was good and so was the water pressure in the shower. That was it!

The lobby and bar are lovely but when you get to the bedrooms i can only describe them as basic and in our room was a stale beer smell. You did get used to it when in the room but every time you entered the room it was like a slap in the face. We stayed for three days and the second day room service didnt come until 5.30pm when i was just getting intobthe shower to go out at night time and 20 minutes later when asking reception to let them know they can service the room and they had left the following day we were checking out and for some reason room service woke us up rather than servicing the room after we had checked out. We are also appauled that the carpark is £25 per night on top of the stay. I feel thisbis rediculous and stinks of money grabbing rather than helping patrons of the hotel who have already paid to stay at the hotel. The shower was powerful and i liked that but all in all I would say our stay was bang average and i left feeling very disapointed. I will not be staying here again.

We loved the lobby of the hotel. our room was very nice, however, we were surprised when we found out we were not actually in the main building. We had to walk to another part, including many stairs (we had big luggage). The outside door to the parking lot had a broken lock, which didn't feel safe, considering it was in a back parking lot. The room and the main hotel was lovely though. We would stay again, but make sure we were in the main building!

Warm cookies at check-in is a nice touch. We were allowed to extend our check-out time by an hour without charge. Good location - on the border of the city centre, so quiet but convenient. Friendly, welcoming, professional staff. A larger TV than you usually get in a standard hotel room. Decent aircon.

However, it doesn’t deserve to be a four-star hotel. There was no choice of pillows in the room, so we were stuck with useless, uncomfortable ones that gave no support whatsoever; combined with the hard, tombstone-like mattress, we had a terrible night’s sleep. The decor and fittings throughout are dated, damaged and worn, particularly in the bathroom. There’s only one lift and it’s the slowest hotel elevator we’ve ever encountered - the door alone takes an age to open and close. They also inexplicably left the front doors open, so cigarette smoke lingers in the lobby.

It’s a decent three-star hotel, but it needs a good refurb to earn its current four-star status.

The room was very average poor storage especially in the bathroom. The bath was very slippery and the handle was of little use getting in or out of the bath. The soap and shampoo were unreachable when having a bath as they were too high. Breakfast very poor on the first day, no fruit or yoghurt left, undercooked poached eggs.

I had to move rooms three times because the first room was on the road, which was very noisy, the second room the heater was left on making it a sauna and the AC machine wasnt working, and the third room was ok, but heater outside was very noisy and the walls were paper thin as I could hear the neighbours talking, moving around, sneezing etc. The decor is very old fashioned and needs an update and the floors are very squeaky so you can hear others moving about and when I tried to walk quietly by other rooms, I couldn't. The breakfast was a nice variety however and had your basics and catered for other tastes. The location is good as its only about 5-10 minute walk the York Minster and the Shambles.

All staff went above and beyond. Room was ready early and we were allowed to check in when we arrived. We were given warm cookies on arrival which was a nice touch. Room was spacious, clean, and had everything you could need including tea, coffee, iron, toiletries, etc. the room had a heater and aircon and so the temp of the room was perfect for us.
breakfast was amazing and again staff couldn’t be any more helpful. We will definitely be returning!

Room lay out and height was ridiculous and clear signs that other guests had collided with the sloped roof. I’m 5’4” and had to bend to avoid bashing my head to get into bed!! Not acceptable for a room charge of £171.
2. Room was cold, no heating and heater provided was ineffective
3. No blinds or curtains on the window!! It’s a bedroom!!
Bathroom light and extractor fan were on the same switch so the noisy extractor continued to run 6 mins after the light was turned off. As if that wasn’t bad enough from our room you could hear the extractor fan running in the other rooms above and beside us!
We had required a dog friendly room , but this should still be a decent functional room at the price point offered
We left early before 7am having been awake throughout the night ( light and extractor) and couldn’t speak to anyone as the desks were empty!!. We dropped the key in the express checkout and left.
I would like a response from the hotel and to be honest a refund as this was an unacceptable nights stay. I look forward to hearing from you.

Where to even begin with this hotel? I honestly cannot believe it is part of the Hilton Hotels & Resorts brand. The entire property feels stuck in the 1990s, and I now fully understand why it has so many poor reviews. It is, unfortunately, among the worst-rated hotels in York — and our experience reflects exactly why.

We were assigned Room 74, located outside across the parking area and up two narrow flights of stairs, which made carrying luggage extremely difficult. The room was directly above the delivery bays for the bars. On both mornings of our two-night stay, we were woken at approximately 6:45am by loud banging from brewery deliveries, along with noise from the housekeeping storage area below. Sleeping beyond sunrise was virtually impossible.

The décor throughout is stained, tired, and outdated. The rooms are in urgent need of full refurbishment. While the location is good, parking is extremely limited and charged at £25 per day, which feels excessive given the overall standard of the property and I suspect staff have first pick over the bays.

Breakfast was another major disappointment. There was simply not enough food for the number of guests Nerys, who was replenishing items, appeared overwhelmed and was openly snapping at guests who politely asked about missing basics, responding with remarks such as, “THEY’LL BE READY WHEN THEY’RE READY!”

We stayed in room 52 if you are given this room my advice is immediately ask to be moved. Ridiculously small room with dangerously low ceiling. Desperately in need of a clean and renovation, blood on walls and carpet, rotting bath panel and shelves hanging off the wall. Barely enough room to move around the bedroom area without hitting your shins on the bed corner while needing to remember to duck to avoid hitting your head on the roof sticking out. Honestly not sure how the hotel can justify this as a double room for the rate charged.

The room (130) is simply too noisy to sleep in at night and I don't think you should make it available to guests without sorting out the sound proofing. We could hear everything outside the window. Cars waiting at traffic lights, bikes revving, people playing music, sirens. It fell well. below the standard I would expect of a DoubleTree or even a Travelodge for that matter

Also for a premium room a coffee pod machine would have been nice rather than instant nescafé, some coffee bags as a minimum. The room was neglected and cleanliness wasn’t great. We were first given a room that someone had already checked into. There was a very strong smell of dog in our room. The parking was a nightmare. Parking was offsite, in a public car park. Where we parked with our car loaded with suitcases.That evening we noticed there were cars parked in the loading parks and EV charging parks. When we enquired why we couldn’t park there, one staff member said it’s not allowed, and the guests in the parking will be fined. A different member of staff said the hotel has a policy that if the parks are empty after 8pm guests may park there.

Cant knock the staff i actually feel so sorry for them how they must deal with abuse daily when its not there fault. Double tree by the hilton needs to put money into the place, as there was no heating working in the rooms rubish and beer bottles left outside our door on arivel even tho room was ready for us. Stains all over carpet. Plug in heater to compensate for no heating which when gets hot turns off so at end of nov wen it was -2 didnt help whatsoever. Shame really as staff were lovely. All got resoveled in the end and got dealt with brilliantly by expedia would i stay again? Yes if they put money in to the hotel as its not worth what we paid but location is amazing

It would be good if the hotel was advertised as being positioned in the side of a busy road. We had a room right in the roadside and didn’t get a wink of sleep all night.
Also our room was very cold. There was a small plug in heater which we put on as soon as we got in room but this didn’t make much difference for the small amount of time we were there.
The room itself was clean, staff were friendly and breakfast was excellent value for money

Lovely hotel, great location in the centre of town. Staff were happy to take our bags, when we arrived well ahead of check in, in fact all the staff whether in reception, breakfast or in the bar were polite and professional. Thought the rooms were excellent and very comfortable, huge comfy beds and spotless. Just enjoyed the layout of the hotel very relaxing with a nice atmosphere, overall an excellent stay and will definitely be back.

Dropped the bags off at 1pm, huge queue to do so and only 1 staff member on desk, apparently there was staff sickness.
This took 30 mins of waiting.
Arrived back to hotel 530pm to check in, waited 40 mins in the queue to do so, as yet again, only 1 staff member. Really difficult as my daughter is autistic and very unregulated.
There was noone extra to tell and i would have lost my place in the queue.
Finally got room key, Dropped off bags and went tp bar for a drink. Terrible mistake. We were next in lone and the bar was quiet when we arrived.
The ladies in front ordered a few drinks then the computer stopped working when they were trying to pay. During this 10 minutes, severl men arrived at the other side of the bar. When finished, the young male bartender went on to serve all the men waiting, even though me and my 11 year old daughter had been waiting 25 minutes at this point. It was disgusting, i honestly felt invisible, which I wasn't as my daughter was shouting out and stimming for everyone to see, yet we were still ignored, im guessing because im a woman.
Terrible service and very disappointed when i had paid very close to £300 for one night!

It certainly wasn’t a “deluxe” room. What we paid for a perfectly average room with a big bed. The room was somewhat dismal and dark with very poor lighting. There was 1 bathrobe (for 2 of us) no shower gel, the shaving light didn’t work in the bathroom. They only had one member of staff on reception on a busy Saturday near Christmas for everyone trying to check in , which left a rather long queue through the entrance foyer (same happened at checkout)
Just a very expensive “average” hotel. Not really what you’d expect from a “Hilton” in our opinion.

If you’re looking for a cheap hotel in a convenient location then this is a great hotel. Unfortunately the parking at the hotel is nonexistent and £25 per night. The shower in our bathroom turned the floor into a swimming pool, the carpets were stained with an unknown substance and the room hasn’t been updated since the Romans were last here.

Staff were great, but didn't enjoy the room. Bathroom smelled of sewage so we didnt fancy drinking the tap water and shower door was broken so floor got very wet. Also thin walls so could hear everything from outside and upstairs. Lights in the room were very weak so it was hard to get ready at nighttime.

The building itself is very big and beautifully decorated / furnished. Had a very nice stay. Although strange that check in is from 4pm, we have been to dozens of hotels and 3pm is generally check in time.

When checking in we were told the room number but not told where to go for breakfast or where to go for our room.
For our room We were just told to turn right when going through the doors which would of taken us to the road. When in actual fact it was the building opposite the hotel entrance. It would of helped if he just said that wand what the building was called.
Then when we eventually found our room the heating just blowed out cold air. So all we had was a little electric heater. So the room was cold most of the time.
Also the shower leaked, the water was spurting out the showerhead over the floor, so had to have a bath everytime.
Just things that should be checked i think before a room is available.

Checked in fine, was told to come back at 4:00 when the room was ready, went back at 4, got told it would be 10 minutes and got asked to sit in the bar and wait for someone to come and get us. 16:45 no one come, went to desk, still messaging about, gone 17:00 by the time we got to our room.

Asks for a late check out to return to the room at 12:00 to the cards not working.

First the good bits - decent location immediately outside city walls at Monkgate and decent breakfast.

The bad bits:

VERY LIMITED PARKING, which is not mentioned in the hotel description with only about 15 spaces including 4 electric and 3 disabled bays. During my 3 night stay, the car park was full with only 1 car actually using a charger, and 1 registered disabled badge holder, the rest were regular cars. The alternative is a public car park 300 metres away at £25 per day.

I stayed in a ‘motel’ room - my room door opened directly onto the car park, where at 7am the foodservice and laundry trucks arrive right outside my door.

Room was only partly made up on the last night - and the drains in the bathroom stank.

Upon checking in, my husband and I were given room keys to occupied rooms, not once but twice! This seriously delayed our check in and left me witb no confidence that our things would be secure as I was able to waltz in to two people's rooms. It was supposedly down to a glitch in their system, but it's lucky I didn't walk in on any compromising situations. I was given a free drink for the trouble while the third room was checked to avoid the same mistake a third time, but no money was refunded off our stay. The third room we were put in was a bit tired looking with marks on the mirror, desk and walls but it was okay. Parking was very limited as well so we had to park further away from the building which wasn't the most ideal with the check in experience we had. We did end up staying the full duration of the 2 day trip as I couldn't find anywhere else to stay so last minute. We didn"t have any further issues, despite a bit of noise outside when we think Bins were being collected which I suppose can't be helped. Overall, I would not stay again or recommend as it definitely wasn't worth what we paid, or the stress and hassle it caused.

The room looked tired and needed a bit of facelift, not worth the cost.
The bathroom door did not shut properly. The curtains did not shut properly. The toilet holder fell off the wall. Maintenance was requested to sort this out. Quick response but bathroom door still was sticking.
Requested an additional duvet or bed spread due to the room being cold, requested 3 times but it did not happen.
Checking in was ok but the Expedia information relating to breakfast (included) had not filtered through to the hotel.
Breakfast was okay, good selection although the coffee machine was out of order, so hotel had reverted to pump flasks.

The first room they offered us was smelling to the point it made my wife feel uncomfortable, sick. The second room was tired, in need of a face lift. It was what they called a deluxe room all I could make out as a deluxe was a large bed. The room was tired, marks on the walls marks on the fitted sheet that you could see the minute you walked in to the room. That remained up till we checked out. View from the room is over the car park and bins. This is the forth Hilton I have stayed in and by far the worst. Hilton is in my mind a name for style and elegance. Not in this case. The room has two different outlets on the , white pvc and brushed satin. There are two different colours of skirting boards. Who does that. It felt like a that will do attitude no attention to detail. No table clothes in their dining room..we stayed in on night due to poor weather and decided to eat in the restaurant. There is a sign which says, please wait to be seated and our friendly staff will be happy to help. We waited and their friendly staff completely ignored us. This was a tall slim lad with dark hair and glasses, kitted out in a waist coat. I don’t think he spoke to us in the entire time we’re there. The tall weekend lady who helped out at breakfast was friendly , in my opinion, the only one. It was like we were given the cold shoulder treatment was because we complained about the first room, which in all honesty, I wouldn’t keep dogs in there. Really poor. I will not use this again.

Comfy room however room next door to lift , not suitable for use as lift noise is too loud and wakes with each use. Light needed to use tea tray safely no light near t.v. where only option to place tray or kettle
. switched rooms had a good nights sleep.

Room was very nice, however the pillows could be better. Too soft with no support. Wi-fi in the room was not very good. Staff were very helpful. Breakfast was very good. Plenty of it and good choices. Great location of the hotel for the city centre.( this is the correct spelling of centre. It's not center.We are not American). Enjoyed our stay

Probably worst hotel experience ever and we have stayed in a lot of hotels. Limited parking equals no parking unless disabled or electric car. BUT massive issue with our room. We were told needed to wait for room to be inspected after it was cleaned and we were there soon after 3 and official check in from 4pm. Fine but .. when we got to the room there weee 6 bags and cases in room from another guest, empty champagne bottle, used glasses and broken light dangling from the ceiling! Lied to by 2 members of staff therefore about an inspection. On complaining at the shambles and paying £250 for the pleasure for one night room only , we were upgraded to a deluxe room. No idea why they thought it was deluxe. Whole place is tired and clearly badly managed. Do not stay here

We were in a room where we had to walk outside to get to it, through broken outside door, up 2 flights of creaky stairs to a converted attic space. The radiators weren’t working and the room was freezing. The furniture was so old, carpets stained and velux windows really dirty.
We complained about the state of the room. The lady on reception didn’t seem at all shocked by our complaint.
She said that she wouldn’t give a refund as we booked via Expedia.
Disgraceful!! Don’t stay there!

Disappointed in Room; Amazing Location

We were put in a room that had no Wifi, no air conditioning and a fan. We were offered to move rooms, however, we were only there for 2 nights and this would take away from our time in York. Location is amazing!! Breakfast was ok, very crowded and hard to get coffee due to how close the coffee machine was to the buffet. Speciality coffee wasn't working on the second morning.

Disappointing and dirty

We checked into the DoubleTree by Hilton York on 30th August 2025. We were allocated room 52 which is a duplex. The room was dingy, dirty with only half the lights working and slash marks on the wall.
We went to the front desk and were allocated room 36 instead, but told to keep 52 for the water because the hot water was off in 36
In 52 there was no plug for the bath, the desk gave us one. On the evening of 30th August I got a call from the hotel saying it was a miscommunication about keeping room 52 and they needed it back. I said that we had originally booked that room for the bath as my husband can't fit in the showers. The manager asked that we keep 36 for the night and change again the next day. In the morning, accessing the bathroom in 36 we saw the appalling state of it. Mildew all over the shower, toilet and sink not attached to the wall, plugs hanging off, paint falling off the ceiling and all over the already dirty floor. I have photos and videos of this.
We got out and went for breakfast where the staff there were loudly commenting on how much people had eaten and how fat they were.
The front desk (who were fantastic by the way) changed our room again, to an actual clean one. All of this took a day and a half of our 2 day break and was so stressful and disappointing.
On checking out we were given 25000 Hilton honors points as compensation. The hotel made the account, which was immediately hacked and someone changed the email connected to it and stole the points.

The staff were friendly enough but there are a distinct lack of facilities i.e room service and no welcome pack to provide any details i.e wi-fi or local amenities, the food was untried so i can not comment on that but the room was needing some tlc, wardrobe door handles and drawer handles with parts missing and shower screen with poorly fitting seals made for a very wet bathroom floor, also i think having to ask reception for a shower/bath mat is a bit much, the cast iron bath although a nice feature is slippy as without one

Very disappointing for a Hilton Hotel. Have stayed in quite a few and this was by far the worst. Reception area was very nice. Because my booking was not sent through to the hotel we had to wait for in excess of 1.5 hours until Expedia and the hotel agreed that I had paid in advance. Because of this I was upgraded to a suite which I felt like it dated back to the 90’s. The curtains and netts were not fixed properly. The carpet was stained, the toilet flush was difficult to use, only certain channels worked on the tv and the whole bedroom and bathroom needed to to fully refurbished. All in all certainly not a hotel I will revisit. Only one plus side was that the location was spot on

I was given a room on first floor , but then discovered I had 3 more flights of stairs to get into my loft style room ,the air conditioning couldn't cool the room down and it was very uncomfortable even with a fan.
