Stayed in the female 10 bedroom ensuite and it was all the way on the 3rd floor. No elevator lucky had a really nice man that helped me with my luggage if not it would have been a struggle. The bathroom is extremely small and it floods and gets super messy when someone takes a shower since the water gets everywhere. It’s honestly not much bigger than an airplane toilet. There is nowhere for you to do your makeup so had to do my makeup in bed with my small pocket mirror. The area is great though super close to the train station and to historic York.

My stay at Micklegate would have been a much better experience if it was not for the last evening. During my last evening at Micklegate Hostel, I was awakening several times by a group of adults and kids that were staying there. They appeared to be a very large group of teenagers and their coaches. For some reason the front desk staff ignored all the noise that was going on in the hallways and rooms on the upper floors.

I had to walk past all the loud teenager and their coaches and complain to the front desk attendant. Apparently, he made them aware that it was late and they must stop the noise.

It was a lovely building & communal areas were good. However the TV blew up as soon as I put it on & was kaput. It was lonely in my room with minimal facilities & staff were barely helpful. Other guests spent 20 mins getting the TV in the dining room to work. I'll be in Montrose next week in a single room at exactly half the price of this one so not good value.

Nima, the staff, is really friendly and attentive. You can leave your luggage here for just 3£/day. Great location, close to the station. The room is clean. There’s a cage that you can put your belongings in and lock for safety. The only downside is there is no electrical outlet for the top bunk. Roommates can be quite noisy in the early morning, but that how the dormitory is.

Due to the extreme noise, a nose strip should be offered and mandatory, it was disturbing even through headphones and earplugs.

No aircon in room, advertised as there.

Staff were helpful but not always listening to my concern about the door not opening to my dorm.
No plug sockets for upper bunk anywhere, made this an awkward situation of impinging on the privacy of the lower bunkmate. I know this is momentary but it still affects another person at any hours of the day or night.

No shock absorption for bunk beds, so that you can feel you're alone, otherwise both parties feel the others' movement.

No lock provided, such as a electronic lock for the storage facility in the room lockers, which was unexpected. The cage did not go under the bed when a guest was in the lower bunk - functionality issue.

Guests didn't have the House Rules to hand about lights out, no noise after 10 etc, this would be handy in the bathroom and room door to prevent selfish behaviour of an anti social nature. E. g. A guest left water all over the bathroom floor and entrance to the bathroom, a trip hazard, and when asked to wipe it up politely, did not reply or action the mess.

Booked a private room for 5, including adults and kids. Room 25 is just under the dining room which was full of an adult group having boisterous fun until 1 or 2 am (only slowed after complaining because kids couldn’t sleep and asked to quiet down - not soundproof so felt like we were laying in middle of a bar or party). Adults just having fun - would have loved it on an adult trip in my 20’s. Knew as a hostel it would be simple beds and loud but assumed quiet hours at least by midnight but there were none, okay to be loud 24hrs. Beds were fine - bunks not creaky, bed quite firm but ok and private, comforter plush. Great shared bathroom just across from room, clean with 3 private showers and 2 toilets. Wish it had been communicated that towels were available for fee - wasn’t told and didn’t show in Hotels post or email. Location is great, walking distance of food, stores, river, activities. Parked in Blossom st car park a reasonable walking distance for reasonable £11. Again would do well for a girls trip or adult fun late into night. I didn’t sleep and kids didn’t much either so were miserable. York was so busy for holiday market after restless night it was too much for them so disappointing it was a bit of a wasted trip altogether.

기차역 근처에서 정말 싼 가격에 숙박할 수 있습니다. 건물은 중후하고 침구류는 깨끗해보였습니다. 단점은 다인실 침대가 소리가 났고 안정적이지 않아 보이네요. 윗층 침대 옆 전원이 없어 충전이 불가능합니다. 복도 끝에 별도의 화장실 겸 샤워실이 있고 한 명만 들어갈 수 있습니다. 화장실은 깨끗했지만 샴푸나 바디워시는 없습니다. 배터리가 충분한 상태에서 잠만 자고 간다면 이곳만큼 좋은 곳이 없겠습니다. (기차역에서 가까운 것도 큰 장점) 그러나 그 이상을 바란다면 실망할 겁니다.

Good: excellent location, walkable distance from train station and town centre. Bunk beds had curtains and you could just close it and be private. Place was quiet.
Bad: Staff at the reception were not friendly, at times rude and dismissive. The owner should come down sometimes to check it. The atmosphere wasn't friendly, not a good place to make new friends. There were tables, chairs and armchairs on the ground floor but people sat individually and spent time on their phones. Bedrooms very bad cleaned, dust pilled up under/side of beds. Terrible mattress. Toile/shower cubicle very small, shower plug blocked which created a pool every time I had a shower. Not very pleasant!

The property is very attractive, the whole idea of using the history is good but.....10 people in a dorm with one tiny capsule en suite is not really adequate and it was not well maintained. Too few waste bins in the dorm and bathroom. People in top bunks had poor access to plugs. No free tea or coffee available. Generally a Hostel that is trying to be an hotel.

It was the worst place I've stayed in my entire life, the shower didn't work on any of the days I was there, I made 6 complaints and nothing was resolved, there simply wasn't hot water, the bathroom and room were only cleaned one day Anyway, thank God I'm in another hotel here in York, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

The place needs kitchetes, a tv room and laundry facilities. Strong rules about losing your accommodation if you are found to make too much noise after 12 pm. The place needs a deep clean and the shower facilities need improving. Shared toilets are a bad idea and must be super uncomfortable for women.

Reasonable experience for such a low price

It's exactly what you would expect from a cheap hostel in the middle of a busy city. I needed somewhere to sleep and I got it. I did however have a couple of issues whilst I was staying. My locker was positioned somewhere where it was inaccessible. As I was staying one night It didn't bother me too much as I had 1 bag with few valuables and I slept with it in my bunk. But where I staying longer and had more baggage, it could have been a problem. Also the toilet door kept jamming in my shared room. That definitely needs looking at. On the whole though, it's a reasonable experience for such a low price.

Overall, a nice stay

Overall the hostel was great. Some slight unclean areas and maybe an investment is the bathroom areas could be better. Common areas such as halls and lobby were up to date and tidy. The hostel seemed very quiet for a saturday, some noise on the Sunday morning but it was no different to staying in the usual hotel chains apart from the bathroom size in our dorm. The staff were really friendly and welcoming. The location was great for the York night life

3rd floor. Very heavy luggage. No lift.

The room was spacious, the 'en-suite' was so small, we couldn't sit on the toilet and shut the door. The shower was built for short people. The bed was very firm, which we liked. The room layout didn't make much sense, but we only stayed for a night so not really a problem.

We loved the building, and there were lots of informative plaques around the house explaining architecture, usage, and history. We used the luggage room to stash our bags before and after checking in / out. Really useful.

The staff were very friendly, and it the local area has lots of restaurants to chose from, and not far from city centre.

Safestay hostel has a friendly, helpful staff. Its in a good location with supermarkets, shops, cafes, postal mailing center and sights within a 10 minute walk.
We stayed in the family room on the 3rd floor. The room was clean and spacious but the bathroom is tiny and the shower water was lukewarm. We did not have any problems with noise at night during our midweek stay. Breakfast was good with a variety of beads, meats, cheese, cereal juice, coffee, tea and yogurt.

My one night stay.

The wash basins in room 3 were so small a person could only wash their hands effectively without getting water all over the floor. When I tried to wash my face I simply could not keep from getting water all over the floot. Everything else was fine modern and clean.

I did not use the kitchen at all. I had no need to.

Good staff but should be cleaner

While the staff I met with were helpful and lovely, and the dorm setup is generally comfortable, the cleanliness and maintenance is not up to standard, even for a hostel. I stayed two nights, and it’s clear that rooms and bathrooms are not thoroughly cleaned daily, as small piles of trash including leftover food (from someone who had left at least a day before I arrived) were left untouched through at least two cleaning cycles. The soap in the bathroom was empty when I arrived and the toilet roll was not replaced when housekeeping went through. These are small problems compared to the general setup of the bathrooms, however. It’s a tiny plastic cabin without ventilation, and the floor is essentially one level from toilet to shower, meaning the shower water floods the whole bathroom, and the floor is constantly dirty and wet. This is made worse by there only being the cheapest, flimsiest shower curtain. Please, at least add a better barrier on the floor or a shower door. Furthermore, mold is growing on the ceiling and shower curtain from the unventilated moisture and lack of proper cleaning.

Nice, but...

This is a perfectly nice hostel in a really convenient location. The neighborhood is quiet from 5 am to 11 pm, but then all bets are off. The hostel sits squarely between a cluster of nightclubs and a cluster of bars, and the patrons go back and forth between them all night. If you like to stay out all night, this hostel perfect. If you like to sleep when most people do, this may not be the best choice.

An absolute privilege to have the chance to spend a few nights in this historic building which has not been over developed although the amenities are more than adequate.
Comfortable beds with safe storage, bar with pool table, breakfast room with use of kettle, toaster and fridge and also large lounge/chillout room and all very tastefully decorated (in my opinion!).
Oh, and well located near the centre of York.
Not forgetting the friendly helpful staff.

Friendly and welcoming staff, bar and lounge attached which was nice to unwind and the beds were all in excellent condition.

However, returning to my bed in the evening of my second night I found someone else sleeping in there. We had to go to reception where there was a mix-up and the other gentleman was given my bed by mistake. Easily rectified and corrected however quite inconvoent for myself and the other guests in the dorm late at night. Otherwise perfect stay, will come again 🙂

If Heineken did hostels...

I've stayed before an I would again. The curtained beds are great for added privacy and rare in hostels generally. The only thing I think could be improved was that there was no wall mirror in the room, my bed had no plug sockets but one on the other side of the room had an incredible 8! The heavy iron bathroom door squeeked and the handle came of. Staff were however helpful, and check in was easy and fast. A fabulous building in a great location in the heart of York. Very handy for Fibbers live music venue which is just around the corner.

Lovely staff but there a few facilities. Each room has an en suite which is a great addition but for a 12 person room, the likelihood of it being used is high. The communal bathroom is therefore the only real option and this room boasts only one shower. Over my four night stay, I found the communal bathroom without toilet paper a number of times, and when it was there, it was balanced precariously on top of the holder rather than within it. The rooms are comfortable, clean and serviced each day which was nice. Very, very cold. My 12 person room had only a small space heater to warm the large space.

Perfect with a bit of improvement

The beds are comfy but do make quite a lot of noise when moving around so that need to be sorted out. I was in room 1 and the condition of the bathroom was absolutely disgusting I mean I saw 2 pair of boxers on the floor don't know how long it was there for, hair in the wash basin and it was just filthy plus the bins seemed like it wasn't empty for some time which was quit shocking because the least they can do is clean it. I do however have to say the staff are very friendly and helpful and they will try and accommodate you if think the bed isn't suitable. The location is perfect I mean it takes 10 minutes to the train station and there is a bus stop on baker lane which if take left from the entrance, walk down the road and turn left. Here you will find numerous bus routes such as number 7 park and ride designer outlet as well as many other bus routes. I am not saying I won't stay here again because this review is based on my second trip and my first trip was actually last week so I would be lieing if i said I didn't enjoy my stay. However in my honest opinion this isn't suitable for a long stay. For the price you pay is more than worth it and I will go as far as saying there isn't anything else for this price that you might like. So for 2-3 it's perfect like I would say don't even doubt your booking and book instantly but 5 plus nights I would say other places might be better. I would recommend this but the points I mentioned in terms of cleanliness needs to be considered.

It was good this time,because I had no thumping from underneath my bunk in my room to awake me during the night. The level of customer service this time was an improvement on some previous stays I had here. I noticed the water was hot this time for a shower because it hasn't always been although this isn't the staff's fault when the water isn't hot because Safestay York is in an old building,originally from the Georgian period,namely Micklegate House. When guests come to stay if they aren't too busy with other things I recommend they take a little time to look at the plaques near the guest rooms and stairways and on the ground floor near the main entrance which give descriptions of what purpose the rooms originally had in Georgian times because historically Micklegate House is an interesting place.

Cool building but very loud

The building the hostel is in is very cool and old and has a lot of history, however, because of this the windows are not very effective in blocking out sound from the street. We could hear word for word conversations of people passing by on the road. Did ask staff for ear plugs but they didn’t have any left unfortunately.

Took a chance and booked a family room here. Reception not brilliant. Didn't even consider the idea of early check-in, insisted on photo ID even though not mentioned on booking confirmation and never asked for in UK hotels for UK citizens and later on had to witness an argument between them will waiting for bar. The corridors and room floor had not been vaccumed properly and the bathroom had hairs. Pity as room big and quiet. This is a hostel but I was paying a hotel rate. Other points. Down stairs loos need coat hooks and room bathroom needs shelf to put tolitaries on.

Great location, friendly staff

We had a good time. Close to the train station but also to York City Centre. The staff was very friendly and let us store luggage when we arrived early and after check out. The room was clean with a secure under-bed storage unit. We didn’t, however, have accesss to an outlet in our room which meant charging our phones became a hassle.

Don't pay for Breakfast

We had a family ensuite room on the top floor, 5fl.
The room was quite large but the bathroom is very small.

The breakfast was only toast, ham and chess. Coffee was terrible.
You can find better breakfast in York. So don't pay for it.

Great value but not for light sleepers at the w/e

For the money this place is excellent value. You are given an allocated bunk so no fighting for bottom bunks! Excellent customer service and very clean. The bunks even have curtains for privacy. The only thing I would say is that is situated near a few clubs and because the Georgian building isn't soundproof you hear loud music (gone 2am on the Saturday I was there). But this is a minor grumble.

9 men go cycling

After 110 miles cycled of a 2 day 170 mile trip we were greeted warmly - room was bright - bunk beds comfortable.
Would recommend this if you are cycling the Way of the Roses as a place to stay!!

Great place to stay in historic house!

This hostel is in a really cool part of town that is close to a lot of different sites. The actual hostel is located in a historic house. It was one of the best hostels I've ever been to! I highly recommend it!

Good for location.

Overall Ok. Staff friendly and helpful. Excellent location. Room was ok but bathroom was moody and toilet needed a good clean as did the brush which stank. Wasn't too keen on the fact we had to hire towels but hey ho.

Good at all except Toilet.

Location is good, just 12 min to train station & 15 min to York Minster. The worst thing is the bathroom/toilet which is small, water from shower not hot & with special smell in room 1. If compare to the same hostel in Edinburgh which is very good, the bathroom/toilet status is much poor.

Central location

Walking distance from train station and major attractions. Friendly staff, beautiful Victorian building.

I stayed in a 4 bed room and meet a lot of people. The lounge areas are comfortable. The internet was a little slow downstairs but worked well in my room.

Very clean, lockers available for every person. There is a luggage room where you can leave your suitcase if you check in early or if you are leaving later than check out time.

Down in the dungeon!

Have to say it was very good value for money bearing mind the perfect central location in York. The staff gave a friendly and helpful greeting but I had the misfortune to be placed in the Meat Room which had a dank odour and very little air in the room. The bed was comfortable and the shower was adequate. Breakfast cheap and cheerful but enjoyed some good bonhomie with fellow visitors and would not hesitate to make a return visit provided I didn't end up in the dungeon!!!
