Good location and easy to get into the centre of York. The hotel also has plenty of parking, which is a real plus.

That said, charging nearly £20 to park overnight feels a little steep, especially when you’re already staying at the hotel. Overall a convenient base, but the parking price does take the shine off slightly.

We was checked in early which was appreciated. However we had booked a superior room with a queen bed only to realise a short time later that the room we had actually been put in was two singles pushed together. Slightly disappointing and an inconvenience to have to raise this with staff and be told this is normal for the room we had booked. We was then offered another room and moved but it was frustrating to have to pack our stuff and move everything having already unpacked.

As usual the staff are helpful, polite and friendly.
The room was well presented and clean. The chocolates were enjoyed by both of us, thank you.

Only small issue is the WiFi was very poor.

Had issues with the room not being clean- sweets on bedside table, bathroom & sofa bed caked in dust/grime & clearly never been cleaned. Had to ask 3 times at reception before the room was properly clean & ended up discussing with a second manager on checkout as the one discussed with initially offered part refund as she was unable to move us to a different room then never got back to me. The manager (Peter Steadman) who eventually sorted things out for me was excellent and took my complaint seriously. Shame it needed to come to this though. Other than that the hotel was great - comfy bed, shower and bath in bathroom, nice breakfast, pool

Staff were lovely but the room itself (229) wasn't too good. The bed was rock hard, the mirror was all stained, the toilet roll holder was hanging off the wall, one towel had suspicious marks on it and the toilet roll was so cheap and dirty all on the side.
Not what you'd really expect from a Novotel.

Outside frontage poorly maintained, dies not give good first impression. Reception staff not the friendliest, more checking everything is paid, car park etc., pushing breakfast at £15 each, last time it was awful, no thank you!
Not welcoming, suited a purpose for us as visiting concert close by at Barbican. Done it twice now, won't stay again, kids and dogs everywhere too! 30 mins allocated slot in pool area, struggle to spend more than 10 mins as small and only a sauna as well as pool. Key card doesnt work on door, Receptionist has to check you're booked in before allowing you in!
Room adequate 330, but worlds smallest toilet room and sewage smell from sink (read that too on previous reviews) obviously nothing done about it. Stains on carpet, bleach?
Poor for a Novotel, expect better.

I've stayed at the York Novotel several times over the past few years. On the whole the hotel would rate excellent. The only reason i rate it down is the rock hard bed, but that is my preference. We had a meal in the hotel one night of the stay, the menu is somewhat limited but the food and service were excellent. The bed doesn't stop me returning. The hotel is very well situated for the cty centre.

We loved our stay here! Everywhere was spotless, the room was cozy and the bed comfortable.
I loved the pool, and was pleased there was a sauna in the room and that the pool had an in-built jacuzzi.
Reception was nice and there were lots of local goodies on sale for a reasonable price. All the staff we encountered were really pleasant, friendly and helpful.
There was a good range of decent meals in the bar lounge, the pizzas were exceptional!
I was somewhat disappointed with breakfast, the hot food was overdone and tough. The fried eggs were solid, and the scrambled weren't very nice. However, there were plenty of other foods to choose from. The bread for the toast was lovely.
We will most definitely go there again, we fully recommend it!

Lovely hotel, perfect location - short walk along tow path to city centre. Large room and lovely bathroom. Excellent breakfast with particularly friendly staff - only one minor point is that none of the salt and pepper grinders we tried actually grind - possibly a known issue as there were sachets also available. Also witnessed that this hotel is very welcoming for dogs and has lots of things for young children to play with in the reception area.

The Novotel York Centre proved OK and average for a 4 star hotel!
On a positive note ... The staff all proved delightful and enthusiastic to please us! The bar and refreshments were nice and provided a comfortable spacious area to relax and enjoy reasonably priced drinks during happy hour.
The pool was exceptionally nice, clean and well managed!
Breakfast was good and again the staff and service was exceptionally good!
The negatives: the room did not impress us for a 4 star rated hotel. The carpets were stained in multiple area. The 'finger groove handles' on cupboard doors to access the fridge and adjacent cupboard had deep set dust in the grooves and was rather unsightly and setting a poor hygiene standard (We took photographs of these problems if required for evidence!) We did not wish to engage on complaining as we wee only there 2 nights and don't favour making a fuss whilst there!
Water pressure in the sink tap was very low (obviously a reducer in place). Towels and sheets were not of 4 star quality. The car park was very expensive (but we anticipated such and travelled by train!)
Otherwise, the combination of the lovely pool, nice bar and wonderful staff outweighed the identified problems and we enjoyed our stay as best we could.

The thing that let it down was the bathroom as it was an accessible bathroom which wasn’t asked for or required and made it difficult for me being 6’3 due to the low sink and shower/bath configuration. Have had accessible rooms before which were done a lot better. Tv didn’t work as it kept switching itself off

On check in there were 3 staff on the check in desk one was helping another customer one was playing on their phone and one was chatting. This ment checkin took longer than I could have. We confirmed that we had booked a twin room but when we got to the room it was a double (they corrected this via housekeeping). There was a toilet roll under the bed. And the booking for the swimming pool seemed strange as there were at time alot more people than there was supposed to be in it. The room was comfy and the brekfast was good. The staff were variable.

Lovely Hotel

Took our 10 year old granddaughter for her last visit before schools opened back .our room was large with a double sofa bed for her . The bar area was very nice. Breakfast was what we would expect and the food was nice and warm . It was raining on the Saturday night so we opted to stay in the hotel for our evening meal but have to say we were quite disappointed with the quality of the food. All the staff were really friendly and we would definitely stay again.

A great hotel

The lobby of the hotel was great, everything is on one floor so handy if you're disabled. None of those tiny flights of stairs. Swimming pool was fantastic. There's a great kids play room in the lobby which is handy if you want a drink and the kids to entertain themselves. The room was modern and comfortable. My only complaint is that in terms of window the whole room just had one tiny window but a pretty minor complaint. The bathroom was clean and comfortable with good hot water pressure. I would definitely come back.

Confortable stay in a room set up with a pop up bed for my teenage daughter.
Only recommendation is the room could do with a deep clean.
Nice walk along the river to town.
Parking on site is convenient and is open air (didn’t have to worry about having our van in the centre of town!).
Would stay again.

Overall, a lovely stay. Two quibbles: 1. Having to pay for parking at £17 per night when you're already paying £200+ for a room 2. The shape of the sinks in the room don't lend themselves to anything in them going down the plug hole e.g. spit, toothpaste and shaving detritus.

Oh dear, what is going on here Novotel? You used to be a trusted high quality chain but I am not sure anymore. The grounds of the hotel and the lobby is modern, stylish and well looked after. The staff was courteous and lovely... BUT that's all the positives I can say. The breakfast is well packaged but mediocre to a 4 star hotel. The room we stayed in was awful. Dirt and dust rolled off the wall. The carpet was soiled all over. The bathroom was disfunctional smelly and flooded all the time. The bed was like a rock and the bedding old. The communal areas are dingy and dirty. This is a property which hasn't been looked after a long time. Please do better Novotel. Please do justice to the wonderful York and your dedicated staff members.

We have stayed at this hotel many times and always highly recommend it. Our visit this time was spoiled slightly by our check in experience at the hotel. For background, I booked this at short notice (2/3 days beforehand). Confirmation from Hotels.com stated check in time as 4.30pm.
I completed the online check in form (from Novotel itself) the day before our stay, as requested. This asked for your estimated time of arrival as you can arrive before your stated check in time (to leave luggage/ use the car park etc). The form stated rooms would be ready from 3.00pm. I confirmed our arrival time as between noon and 3.00pm. We arrived around 2.00pm and were told at reception that our room would not be available for 3.00pm but it would be ready no later than 3.30pm. We were ok with this.
We went for a walk into York and returned to the hotel at 3.50pm. On arrival we were told we could not check in until 4.30pm as we were not Accor members and the 3.00pm check in is only available to such members (we are members but hadn't use the app for this booking). I acknowledged this but stated we had been told twice (once on the online form and once at reception) we could get in before 4.30pm. The receptionist did try to find us a room and gave us keys for a room on the first floor. We were grateful for this and made our way to the room. On entering, we discovered it was already occupied!
Eventually, everything was sorted out but not a great start to our break.
Otherwise, all ok.

Unfortunately for my 4th stay at the hotel I'm down rating my scores. The bed was rock solid and very uncomfortable, the room was next to the lift and stair well so got the noise from that through the night. Although we were there for 3 nights the room was only serviced once. Not the best stay and I'm very disappointed because i have raved about this hotel to friends and family

Very pleasant two night stay

Lovely couple of days spent in York. Hotel in a good location with secure parking & only 10 - 15 minutes walk into the town centre. We only had breakfast in the hotel but it was very nice buffet style with plenty of choice continental & cooked. Staff where helpful and attentive and the hotel had very nice open plan décor. The pool area was very clean. We wouldn't hesitate to stay here again.

There is a lot of sweet paste in the refrigerator, the carpet feels very dirty, the shower towel is very old, there is no trash can or hand washing in the toilet. The room should be renovated. It is not worth paying more than 200 pounds. There are very few types of breakfast food.
