The hotel has been refurbished to an excellent standard keeping all the original features.
The rooms were finished to a lovely specification with a nice touch of Penhaligons toiletries.

Good location beautiful lobby and nice design. However bathroom was very cold and towel warmer didn’t seem to work. There was a toothbrush head in my bathroom bin so cleaning wasn’t quite perfect. Not the warmest welcome on desk and no sign of WiFi code anywhere in room nor given it at the desk.

Booked a twin room but beds were pushed together because room too small to configure beds correctly. Room was dark, only one bathrobe (for two people) and no water supplied as should be, we had to ring reception and ask for it. Coffee maker needed a good clean.
Mentioned at checkout and was promised an email, never got one.
Madeleines bar was poorly staffed, it is usually good service but only a few (well known) customers got any attention.

All we could hear all noght were the aircon units outaide the window that was closes. Bed was awful. Bouncy and not secure so when you sat on the bed it rolled away from you..

Stayed in a double room, quite small. But everything you need. Spotlessly clean. The whole hotel is spotlessly clean. Every member of staff was courteous and friendly. Had drinks in the bar, not overly priced. Breakfast was really good, quality produce & plenty of selection. A very minor point, the tables are quite close to each other, so felt a bit squashed.
Overall an excellent stay, the decor is amazing. Staff really friendly & helpful. Highly recommended

I think we got a cheeky little upgrade because the room was huge! Spotless, the soaps and things smelt gorgeous. Beautiful little touches in the room too. Staff so friendly and courteous, can’t do enough to help. Breakfast was delicious and plentiful. Would love to stay again.

The room was HUGE! The shower has great water pressure and lovely smelling products. The staff were lovely, the bar was gorgeous and the bar tender kind and helpful. The menu for breakfast was extensive and delicious and the smoothies were an added bonus!!!! Would recommend highly and absolutely stay there again!

Lovely heritage 5 star building let down by indifferent facilities. Specifically a large bedroom became tiny because it was over stuffed with furniture. The bedside table had a radio on ith that was as large as the table.
Buffert breakfast was a mean spread of poor quality produce. Cooked breakfast was marginally better.
Simple adgustments would make it a much better experience.

Overall we really enjoyed our stay at the grand. Staff were really friendly and the hotel is beautiful. We stayed on New Year’s Eve and they had a jazz singer performing in madeleine’s bar downstairs which was lovely for drinks before we headed out. However, there were a couple of issues. The room was very cold and no matter what temperature we set the AC, it wasn’t heating up. There was also an issue with the key cards not working for rooms so we had to keep approaching hotel staff to be let into our room. Finally, we requested late checkout, which was accepted, but half an hour before we were meant to check out a member of staff knocked on our door to tell us we needed to check out. I explained that we had requested late checkout and he was very polite and apologised for the communication issue, but I was disappointed by the disorganisation nonetheless. Regardless of these issues, we still had a great time and would stay there again.

The hotel is nice enough but consistently let itself down with poor service. Lack of response to communications. Complimentary drinks promised but never delivered. Taking over 30 minutes to bring coffee whilst serving those who came after. And the worst part, it was clear that staff really weren’t bothered by any of this. Neither the impending Christmas closure of the presence of a famous football team are mitigating factors for paying guests. This was three star service masquerading as something else.

We booked for in advance for a planned festive shopping trip to Birmingham and chose the Grand as it was in a great location and looked wonderful. We had hoped to start our evening with a few drinks in the beautiful bar before dinner. Sadly this was not possible as the hotel only allow guests to use the bar if they’ve made a reservation. We were not made aware of this at the time of booking or when we checked in!
This was a big let down as we could see the bar had available seating later in the evening because people had reserved but not arrived. I think the hotel needs to rethink this policy as you are losing customers who would otherwise have spent in the hotel bar and enjoyed the full enjoyment of the hotel setting.

We have stayed several times before at the Grand but this time the experience was not as good.
In the bathroom there was only one robe.
There was no complimentary water in the room.
The Cadbury chocolate bars have been replaced by generic biscuits.
The service in Madelaines bar was very slow and chaotic.
There used to be local Birmingham beers available in the bar.
All of these are small things but it’s no longer the great experience you’d expect from the Grand Hotel in Birmingham.
All the little Birmingham specific and other extra touches that made staying there really special have gone.
I hope it’s a blip and not a trend toward becoming just another average hotel.

Compared to my last visit, this experience was absolutely exceptional—this is the standard we were used to, and they are back! Every room was immaculate and beautifully presented. The team went above and beyond, surprising us with a bottle of champagne to kick off the celebrations.
A huge shout-out to Matthew in the Madeline Bar—his attentiveness and professionalism were second to none. He made us feel truly special and ensured everything was perfect. The entire staff deserves recognition for their friendliness, efficiency, and genuine care. From check-in to dining, every interaction was flawless.
We will definitely be back soon. Keep up the amazing work—you’ve set the bar high again!

Such a shame about the guest prices, I can’t comment on the Breakfast, again it was extortionately priced, but no issue as there are amazing local dining options all within easy walking distance!! Room Service is questionable? We tried getting food / snacks later on but “the kitchen was closed”? Would be so easy for a Hotel like this to offer an all night cold sandwich menu. A tip for visitors would be to eat early as unless you want an over the counter Kebab, getting food later on (after 9PM) seems to be a common problem anywhere in Birmingham city centre. Despite the negatives, we’d definitely stay again. Birmingham city centre is fantastic!!
