Britannia Hotels are cheap and often tatty, but I don't mind that. This was much better than usual with new carpets and refurb bathroom. But perfect for me at the price and right opposite New Street and in the centre - perfect for Xmas markets

Staff at check-in were fantastic letting me get into the room early as I had luggage and it was ready. The room was standard but the view was ruined by the window being dirty. But I understand it’s a high building in a busy city.

Very bad experience heater was not in working water also too freeze then I called to reception they changed room but that room was also same dirty bedsheet and duvet cover as well . I suffered to its totally wastage of money I spent 78 pounds on that room but it was terrible.

Tired, in all respects, city centre hotel with an entrance off an alleyway, that is being polite off New Street. Not really obvious or welcoming. On my visit only one lift working which worked - sort of. Internal room (no windows) thankfully for one night which was ok. Used the stairs, as lift only one not two was busy elsewhere, three was it(?) separate stairs cases to get down to the exit... and a walk in between each and a round of guess what's behind this door as route wasn't clearly signed or obvious.

I booked a room with twin beds for a 2 night stay. I got a bed with 2 twin mattresses joined together instead of 2 separate beds. The bathroom was good. We didn't have access to wifi as their system was down and would have completed repairs only the day after we left. For international travellers this was a major disadvantage. Also access to the hotel was another concern. The Uber driver had to drop us off at another street due to lack of access and we had to walk there with 4 luggages. The German Christmas market was also underway on the adjacent street that made the stay quite noisy.

This hotel is just off the predestinies Birmingham New Street City Centre, and it a minutes walk from the train station, upper mall entrance.

Britania has a very unassuming entrance, Which is down an alleyway off from the High Street. Staff were polite and there is a member of staff on front desk.

I was given a room on the 9th Floor! with only one lift working. This lift was very slow and would stop of and all floors to pick up other people, so getting to my room usually took around 5 mins.

There are air conditioning units, apposed to radiators in the room, These units doubled up as a heat sauce, however once the units was turned off, the room would get cold very quickly. So was forced to wear jumpers and full attire throughout the night just to stay warm.

Lastly, the room door kept sticking, so i had to forcibly push and pull it closed whenever i wanted the door closed. This method would be necessary when leaving the hotel every day, as if i just let the door close on it's own the room would not be locked or secure. Similarly i had to push door to entre room

Some good points to note about my stay is that the double bed i slept in was very comfortable, and they gave me a room with an en-suite shower room which i requested.
lastly, do to it's central location, both to Birmingham New Street City Centre and it's station, I did not have to walk or travel far to get to my destinations

Finally, i would not recommend this hotel for stays longer then 1 night (i stayed for 2)

We came from London and my friend fell down some stairs and twisted her ankle i came downstairs in the morning to request some help because my friends foot had swollen and I was told an ambulance would be called and shown up to our room when they arrived. We waited and waited until i finally went back down to reception to see what was going on only to be told that I was supposed to ring the ambulance and then they would show them up to the room so I was highly frustrated. After checking out we waited in reception for the ambulance because by this time my friend couldn’t put any pressure on her foot. There were no available toilets while waiting for hours for the ambulance to arrive. At no time did staff check on us or offer any assistance at all. Very disappointed

In terms of being centrally located for the station and market this was perfect. I'd barely describe the room as clean as around/under the desk was dusty. The bed was uncomfortable and there was a strong smell of week from adjacent rooms (not uncommon at this hotel). The windows were single glazed which didn't help with the noise from the street below - people late at night and bin lorry very early in the morning. Generally an unpleasant stay and this was my 3rd time staying. Only one lift in operation, which is needed when you have luggage, so a long wait to go up/down. The decor in the room was dated, the room needed a deep clean as the skirting board was dusty. On the upside the bathroom had been redone and it was a great shower. The staff were great at check in and when I needed more milk. Take your own coffee as what they provide is quite vile. When you book here, remember the old adage - \"you get what you pay for\". It was a budget room, with budget comfort and facilities. Please be aware that you travel along a little, dark dingy alleyway to get to reception. Depending which direction you approach the hotel has an influence on how well it is lit.

The room (321) was spotless and clean, overlooked the christmas market which was nice, there was however a buzzing noise till really late and then an early morning wake up from those setting up the christmas market a brief blast of music before 8am
The staff were fab letting me check in early with my belongings so i could relax before going to the event i had planned that evening too
The only negative i have aside from what has been mentioned is the shower drain was blocked so whilst in the shower it flooded the bathroom, i lifted the drain cap out to help with the flow down put it was filthy so popped it back.

Room was on the 6th floor, away from Main Street noises. Some talks were listened from next door bedroom, but overall quiet. Bedlinen was clean and bed comfortable. Bathroom shower was amazing!! New and strong, however some hair on the sink and corners on the shower floor not too clean.

Finding the hotel in the dark and heavy rain via taxi was almost impossible. I phoned the hotel for walking directions - not very helpful.

In the garment hooks on the back of the bathroom door were hanging off with sharp screws loose. Curtains that didn't fit the windows, light flooding in from surrounding outside lights. Bathroom floor was dirty with hair from other guests around the bin and toilet.

Screaming and loud guests heard around 2-3am, 4am the loudest building shaking noises I have ever heard - no idea what the hell was happening. Interior windows so no clue.

Don't stay here if you want to sleep. Nothing more than a posh hostel.

The hotel is nothing like pictures. On my first night I was up all night as the lady next door was a long-term term guest kept me up all night . I asked the staff for help they did not move me untill 6am the next morning. The for the next 3 day i was asked for money. This hotel houses the homeless. Which i don't mind but they have no rules so they do what they want. The carpets smell so bad . Its the worst hotel I ever stayed in my life. As a woman on my own I did not feel safe. I could not wait to leave I spoke to the manager, still got no help also the front door is in a very dark ally way . Not as pictures. This place is scary. I would not recommend this hotel to anyone. There was only one member of staff that helped me her name was Louise only for help I think I would of have to cut my stay early. The rooms are ok but still the carpet stinks. If you are a woman on your own I do not recommend this hotel. This place is hell .

The hotel is extremely dated and in serious need of modernisation. Much of the building feels run down, and several facilities the lifts were out of order during my stay. Directional signage is poor, making it difficult to navigate the hotel. Overall, the price does not match the condition of the rooms or the experience, especially when compared with other hotels in the area.

Property was as expected. It’s a little dated but that’s not horrific. Clean and comfortable, ideal for a quick stay when attending an event. The walls are very thin so you do get to enjoy whatever the rooms either side of you are watching on the TV but it’s not the end of the world.

noisy old and smells of weed and just not a nice place to be. mattress on bed are done with springs sticking through, need replacing and pillows thin and uncomfortable. couldnt wait to get out of it. but the guy on reception with the glasses, well he shouldnt be there , extremely rude when i told him my room had no towels and toilet paper for 3 days. gave me attitude and turned and went back in to office leaving me standing there. i couldnt believe it. take my advice and stay well clear of this hotel.

Be careful with this property. They requested a deposit after the booking and if you’re a visitor/tourist with no account in the UK you can’t make the deposit. Furthermore, the property doesn’t cancel your booking or refund you the initial payment. Definitely a scam to people visiting from overseas. They also wouldn’t allow you to use credit cards or someone else to make the deposit for you. So please stay away from this property at all cost.

Having read previous reviews my expectations of staying at the Britannia Hotel in Birmingham were not high. How wrong was I! The hotel is a short walk from Birmingham New Street and easy enough to find. Reception area was clean and tidy, with a welcoming member of staff who booked me in quickly as I had done the online booking process. Unfortunately one of the lifts was out of action but due to being on the second floor I decided to use the stairs; once I’d located them - better signage needed I think. I found the communal areas clean and tidy, although a little dated, but this definitely did not put me off. I found my room easily as the corridors are clearly marked with room numbers. My room was clean, tidy and warm. Nice fresh bedding, clean towels, clean bathroom and a good brew kit. I was overlooking the Main Street with the German Christmas Market on below, but the noise from this was negligible and didn’t disturb me at all. The room had all the basic necessities that I needed for my 2 night stay and it was definitely better than I expected. I will say that the mattress was not the best and you could definitely feel the springs - but strangely enough I still slept well! You can hear your next door neighbours at times but fortunately no late shenanigans that kept me awake. Good curtains that blocked out the street lights and draughty window. There was a radiator that I could control so my room was lovely and warm on both nights. All in all I had a very pleasant stay.

The room was far from clean, the bathroom (inc shower) had clearly been used when we arrived. We were told on checkin the hotel was full with no more rooms so we sucked it up for the night as we had showered earlier that day. The bed however had clean sheets and was comfortable. I'm pretty sure the amount our window opened and the single pane of safety are unlikely to pass a modern safety inspection. Tea and Coffee facilities good, TV large modern and good signal. Fine for a 1 night stay after a gig (if you're used to festivals etc) but I would nt use it for anything other than a bed and dont book it as a surprise fo your partner. Basic but servicable.

Fire alarm!

In the middle of the night, a fire alarm suddenly went off and startled me out of bed. This was extremely inconvenient and it was not the first time I experienced this in a Britannia Hotel. They urgently need to change their safety concept. It's simply unacceptable that the entire hotel is woken up just because someone falsely pushed the alarm button or someone took a shower.

If a smoke detector detects smoke, first of all the receptionist should be alarmed, the receptionist should check the situation and in case of a true emergency the receptionist should trigger a general alarm.

We read other reviews before booking so knew what to expect. The reviews were accurate. The hotel is tired and old fashioned.
Positives, the location is great, 5 minute walk from New Street train station, and in the heart of all the shops and currently Christmas markets. We were on the sixth floor and had no noise from the streets.
The shower was hot and I found the bed firm and comfy.
The negatives: super thin walls. We could hear word for word the tv in the room behind us, and even some conversations. No double glazing, but the room temperature could be controlled by a radiator.
The whole hotel needs a make over basically, but it's so large would cost a fortune. The bar was not open on the Saturday night we stayed there.
Would I stay here again, unlikely. However for one night if it's cheaper than elsewhere I possibly would knowing what to expect.

Fed up with getting a room with no windows. Even though told I don’t like closed spaces they still won’t alter the room.
It’s not easy to breath in the room and difficult to sleep.
You don’t know if it’s daylight. You don’t know what the weather is like.
